FX will be premiering two new dramas this coming summer in Tyrant and The Strain. The former, to bow Tuesday, June 24th at 10:00, comes from Howard Gordon (24) and Gideon Raff (Homeland) and tells the story of Bassam “Barry” Al Fayeed (Adam Rayner), the younger son of the dictator of a war-torn nation. He decides to end a self-imposed 20-year exile from his home country and returns, this time with his wife and children, only to find that the culture clash his family experiences threatens to swallow them whole. The latter, set to become FX’s first Sunday drama with a July 13th premiere, is based on the best-selling trilogy of the same name and follows Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. When his team gets called in to investigate a viral outbreak with the hallmarks of vampirism, nothing will ever be the same.

In addition to Rayner, Tyrant stars Jennifer Finnigan (Monday Mornings), Justin Kirk (Weeds), Jordana Spiro (My Boys), Moran Atias (The Next Three Days), and Ashraf Barhom (The Kingdom). The Strain, which was created by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) and will be ran by Carlton Cuse (Lost), stars David Bradley (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), Kevin Durand (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Mia Maestro (Frida), Regina King (Southland), and Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers).

Additionally, FX will be returning one drama this summer in the form of The Bridge, which underwent some upheaval behind the scenes with the departure of co-creator Meredith Stiehm. To debut Wednesday, July 9th at 10:00, the second season of The Bridge finds Marco reeling from the death of his son, Sonya encountering a mysterious man who threatens to come between her and Hank, and Daniel and Adriana continuing to follow the Millie Quintana Money House.

FX will also be debuting three comedies during the summer months, starting with Andrew Gurland’s Married on Thursday, July 17th at 10:00. Starring Nat Faxon (Ben & Kate) and Judy Greer (Archer), the series follows a married couple drowning in kids, debt, and suburbia, who are sometimes reminded of just how deep a connection they share. Following the premiere of Married is You’re the Worst, which debuts Thursday, July 17th at 10:30. From Stephen Falk (Weeds), the comedy tells the story of two self-destructive people (Aya Cash, Chris Geere) who fall in love despite themselves and attempt the impossible—a relationship. Finally, the network will be debuting its next 10/90 comedy, Partners, on Monday, August 4th at 9:00. Airing its first 10 episodes in 5 weeks, the series stars Martin Lawrence (Martin) and Kelsey Grammer (Frasier) as two Chicago lawyers from vastly different backgrounds who unexpectedly meet in court as they each face a personal crisis.

Meanwhile, at FXX, the final season of Wilfred is set to premiere Wednesday, June 25th at 10:00 with back-to-back episodes. The series, which barely managed to scrape a fourth season renewal after a third season collapse, will have 10 episodes in its final season and will serve as FXX’s lone summer scripted entry.

Homeland showrunner Alex Gansa has already enlisted Stiehm to pen the finale for the polarizing third season, set to air next month. Stiehm was responsible for some of the show’s most acclaimed episodes for it the first two seasons of its run, including “The Weekend” (Brody and Carrie go to the cabin), “The Vest” (which won Claire Danes her Emmy for season one), and “The Choice” (the second season finale). Stiehm previously wrote for the likes of ER, NYPD Blue, and Cold Case, the latter of which she created.

This could wind up being a wise move for all parties involved. Homeland welcomes back one of its most revered writers following a season that has seen the show fall out of critical favor, while The Bridge, which sometimes had trouble with figuring out what it wanted to be, gets more stable leadership and a clearer creative voice. There’s no guarantee that Homeland rediscovers itself during season four or that The Bridge decides which road it wants to travel down, or that it even picks the right one to go down, but for the moment, both shows are better off than they were before this move was made.

The Bridge returns for its second season next July on FX, while Homeland currently airs Sundays at 9:00 on Showtime.

In addition to Bichir and Kruger, The Bridge stars the likes of Matthew Lillard (Scooby-Doo), Ted Levine (Monk), Annabeth Gish (Pretty Little Liars), and Thomas M. Wright (Van Diemen’s Land).

The Bridge airs Wednesdays at 10:00 on FX. On the next episode of the series, airing this coming Wednesday, Sonya tries to repair her relationship with Marco, while Charlotte forms an unlikely alliance.

Bingham won an Oscar for co-penning and performing the theme song to Crazy Heart, a 2009 film starring Jeff Bridges, a composition that also won the singer-songwriter a Golden Globe, Grammy, and Critics’ Choice Award. His most recent album was released last September.

Starring Diane Kruger (Inglorious Basterds) and Oscar nominee Demian Bichir (A Better Life), The Bridge is an adaptation of hit Scandinavian crime drama Bron and follows two polar opposite detectives tasked with looking into a high-profile murder. With the body found on both sides of the Mexico-United States border, they’ll have to figure out exactly whose jurisdiction this falls under, how they’ll investigate going forward, and what connection the latest discovery has to do with other recent murders on either side of the border. Also starring in the series are Annabeth Gish (Mystic Pizza), Matthew Lillard (She’s All That), and Ted Levine (Monk).

Cable got an additional honoree in FX’s The Bridge, an adaptation of Scandinavian crime drama Bron that follows a detectives from Mexico and the United States as they try and solve a murder case. On the broadcast side, CBS summer show Under the Dome, originally developed at Showtime, was honored prior to its June 24th series premiere. Additionally, two fall shows made the cut – Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., set to air Tuesdays on ABC, and The Michael J. Fox Show, which marks the Family Ties star’s return to the network that made him a household name.

Starring Academy Award nominee Demian Bichir and Diane Kruger, The Bridge tells the story of a body found on the border between Texas and Mexico. As there’s no clear jurisdiction in the case, given the body’s location, detectives from each country have to work together to bring down the person (or people) responsible. Bichir plays family man Marco Ruiz, a Juarez detective who hasn’t been hardened by the horrors he witnesses on a daily basis, while Kruger is set to portray Sonya Cross, a candid El Paso detective with an undiagnosed form of autism. Despite their differences in world viewpoint, background, and approach to the job, the two will have to find some common ground if they’re to protect citizens in both of their cities and get a killer off the streets for good.

The show also stars Ted Levine as Lieutenant Hank Wade, a member of Sonya’s team and someone who continually tried to help her relate to other people; Annabeth Gish as Charlotte Millwright, a widowed ranch wife; and Matthew Lillard as Daniel Frye, a hard-partying reporter whose career has been a disappointment to everyone, including himself.

Aside from Bichir and Kruger, The Bridge stars Ted Levine (The Silence of the Lambs) as Lieutenant Hank Wade, a weathered member of Detective Cross’s team with cowboy swagger and a hardened view of fellow human beings; Annabeth Gish (Brotherhood) as wealthy ranch wife Charlotte Millwright, who begins uncovering the secrets of her recently deceased husband; Thomas M. Wright (Top of the Lake) as Steven Linder, a man no stranger to the dangers of Juarez; and Matthew Lillard (The Descendants) as cocky reporter Daniel Frye, whose once promising journalism career has been damaged by years of hard partying.

The series premiere of The Bridge is set for July, though a concrete premiere date has yet to be announced. You can check out teasers for the show here.
