More interesting now is how the network is going to handle the comedies they decided to stick with. With Back in the Game likely ending in January, Super Fun Night‘s extension should take it into February, as both The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife have been rumored as candidates for Wednesday tryouts. ABC also still has Suburgatory and dating comedy Mixology on the bench, though the former dropped enough last season to where a return to Wednesdays seems unlikely and the latter is another comedy seemingly penciled in to the post-Modern Family slot despite being completely mismatched. The network’s full plans for midseason should be unveiled sometime later this month.

The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife air Tuesdays on ABC at 9:00 and 9:30, respectively, while Super Fun Night airs Wednesdays at 9:30. Back in the Game will continue airing Wednesdays at 8:30 and finish out its initial 13-episode order.

Starring Rebel Wilson, Liza Lapira, and Lauren Ash as three wallflowers looking to make their lives more exciting by going out every Friday, Super Fun Night premiered earlier this month following Modern Family, where it earned a 3.2 in the 18-49 demographic. However, the series has seen its ratings drop each week since and most recently pulled a 2.1 in the demo, retaining only about half of its lead-in. ABC wants the show to succeed so they can continue to be in business with Wilson, but Super Fun Night isn’t exactly compatible with the rest of its family comedy night and might find itself moved to another night once the network’s midseason schedule is released in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Back in the Game has been the quietest of ABC’s new comedies this season in terms of buzz, though its numbers make it the second highest-rated of the bunch. The series, the latest attempt by the network at bridging the gap between The Middle and Modern Family, debuted to a 2.2 in the demo and saw its most recent episode earn a 1.9. With its DVR numbers uncomfortably low and no sign that the show will receive the same type of push from television critics that Trophy Wife has received, ABC might opt to shift the baseball comedy to Friday night, should they want to give either Trophy Wife or The Goldbergs a chance on a more compatible night. Back in the Game would fit in better with Last Man Standing than The Neighbors and has shown to have a steady audience already, so if ABC wants to either expand their comedy presence on Fridays or try to find a new companion for Last Man, this might be their best shot.

Super Fun Night airs Wednesdays at 9:30 on ABC, with Back in the Game airing earlier in the night at 8:30.

The network has ordered three additional scripts for both The Goldbergs and Trophy Wife, TVLine is reporting.

The sitcoms have been performing comfortably, though not stellar, in the ratings since their premieres, and Trophy Wife could probably benefit from a move to a timeslot out of Modern Family (rather than the slightly-less-than-fun Super Fun Night), but this is nonetheless hopeful news for the two.  Time will tell if the comedies will last a full season.

The Goldbergs, is based on creator Adam Goldberg’s real family life.  Set in the 80s, it is exactly what it sounds like – a comedy about The Goldberg family.  In fact, each episode ends with clips of Goldberg’s home movies.

Trophy Wife, which has suffered some flack for its title, follows Kate, third wife of Pete Harrison, as she navigates her new and extensive (and slightly wacky) family.  This includes three step-children and Pete’s two ex-wifes, plus her best friend.

Starring Wilson, Liza Lapira, and Lauren Ash, Super Fun Night follows a group of three best friends who decide that their days of staying in every Friday night are over. Rather than continue to play it safe, they make it their mission to try new things and experience what they had been missing out on for so long. Below is the official description of the episode that will take the place of the pilot, for which a new date has not been set.

“Anything for Love” — Kimmie wants the gang to broaden their horizons and try something they’ve never done before. But she’s not so brave when she finds out their next super fun night destination is a piano bar. Can she face her biggest fear, singing in public? Meanwhile, Kendall can’t understand why Richard and Kimmie are friends and plans to do something about it.

–Community will begin its syndicated run on Comedy Central Sunday, September 15th with a 10-episode fan favorite marathon beginning at 11:30 a.m. The series, which is set to premiere its fifth season sometime midseason, will then move to its regular slot of Fridays at 9:00 beginning September 20th.

-Will Arnett, Margo Martindale, Jimmy Kimmel, Andre Braugher, Alec Baldwin, Bryan Cranston, Claire Danes, and Sofia Vergara have been named presenters at the 2013 Primetime Emmy Awards, CBS announced. They join Diahann Carroll, Matt Damon, Emily Deschanel, Zooey Deschanel, Michael Douglas, Anna Faris, Tina Fey, Allison Janney, Amy Poehler, and Kerry Washington.

-National Geographic telefilm Killing Kennedy, starring Rob Lowe as President John F. Kennedy and Ginnifer Goodwin as Jackie Kennedy, will premiere Sunday, November 10th to mark the 60th anniversary of John and Jackie’s wedding. The film will then be released in 171 countries and 48 languages, timed to the 50th anniversary of the assassination.

-GSN has greenlit eight episodes of Skin Wars, a reality-competition series focused on finding the best body painter. The series will air sometime in 2014 and should be the second body painting-focused series on television, following the fall premiere of Syfy’s Naked Vegas.

-For its upcoming 13th season, American Idol has brought back Nominate an Idol, where friends and family members can submit videos of their loved one singing for a chance of a surprise audition. From now through September 20th, videos are being accepted on americanidol.com.

-MTV has greenlit two new drama pilots: Finding Carter, about a girl who finds out that the woman she thought was her mother abducted her as a toddler and must now return to her biological family, and Eye Candy, centering on a tech genius who uncovers a potential serial killer in Manhattan through online dating. Finding Carter is from Emily Silver (Bones) and Terri Minsky (Sex and the City), while Eye Candy comes from Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) and Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight).

-Renewals/cancellations: We TV’s LA Hair has made it to a third season after becoming fourth most popular reality cable show in primetime and increasing its total viewers by nearly 60%; TLC has ordered another 10 episodes of Who Do You Think You Are?, executive produced by Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky; TruTV reality series Container Wars will have a second season; BET has canceled Reed Between the Lines and given the second season go-ahead to Being Mary Jane, whose first season doesn’t premiere until January.

-The CW has acquired Canadian comedy Seed from leading independent studio Entertainment One. The series, which debuted this past February and follows a single bartender who becomes a sperm donor, will premiere sometime this season.

-Mekhi Phifer and Eliza Coupe have joined the cast of Showtime comedy House of Lies in recurring roles. Phifer is set to play a successful entrepreneur who calls on Marty to help with his business, while Couple will portray a wild-child heiress to an internet fortune.

-Lifetime has picked up a personal shopping-themed reality series called Million Dollar Shoppers, where three personal shoppers try to meet the fashion needs of their clients. The series premieres October 10th at 10:30 before moving to 10:00 on October 24th, where it will follow the season premiere of Project Runway All Stars.

-Nickelodeon animated series Sanjay & Craig has been renewed for a second season, the network announced Thursday. The tale of an excitable 12-year-old boy (voiced by Maulik Pancholy) and his snake best friend (voiced by Chris Hardwick), the series will have 20 episodes in its second season. Additional voices in the cast include Linda Cardenelli, Matt Jones, and Tony Hale.

-EPIX will air Schooled: The Price of College Sports on October 16th at 8:00. The documentary, narrated by Sam Rockwell, takes a look at issues surrounding the business of college sports and the NCAA’s treatment of its athletes.

-TV Guide Network will premiere four original series during fall 2013: Mother of All Talent, following a mother-daughter duo in charge of a leading talent agency for kids; Tequila Sisters, centered on an affluent Hispanic family in southern California; Wendy Williams Project, where the talk show diva gives a peek behind the curtain at her personal life; and John Rich Project, said to be one part talk (live performances, interviews), one part reality, and all parts Nashville.

-Former Sportcenter anchor Keith Olbermann has signed on to host a late night talk show for ESPN 2. Beginning Monday, August 26th at 11:00 p.m., the anchor, who has been seen on MSNBC and Current TV, will head Olbermann, said to focus on the day’s relevant sports topics through a mix of perspective and commentary,  interviews, contributors, panel discussions, and highlights.

-James Franco (This is the End) is set to guest star on the first two episodes of The Mindy Project‘s second season. The actor will be playing Dr. Leotard, a former model turned physician who replaces Mindy at Shulman & Associates while she’s volunteering in Haiti.

-The CW will kick off its fall season with the two-night presentation of the 2013 iHeartRadio Music Festival, beginning September 30th. Scheduled to appear are Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, J. Cole, Elton John, Muse, Keith Urban, fun., Miguel, Bruno Mars, Maroon 5, Tim McGraw, Miley Cyrus, Jason Derulo, The Wanted, Avril Lavigne, Pete Tong, AWOLNATION, Ke$ha, Phoenix, Thirty Seconds to Mars, Queen + Adam Lambert, and more.

–The View co-host Sherri Shepherd will guest star on How I Met Your Mother‘s final season as a woman sitting next to Marshall on a flight. Her role, which begins in the season premiere, is said to be recurring.

-Composer Bear McCreary has been tapped to serve as series music composer for Starz’s upcoming pirate drama Black Sails, which debuts in January 2014. McCreary’s series credits include Da Vinci’s Demons, Battlestar Galactica, and The Walking Dead.

-ABC has officially renewed Canadian import Rookie Blue for a fifth season. The series currently airs Thursdays at 10:00.

-Per The Hollywood Reporter, Ravenswood has recast the role of Olivia, which had been filled by model Elizabeth Whitson earlier this year. Instead, due to a different character direction and only a week before pilot filming, Merritt Patterson will now play the role. Patterson had previously been cast as Olivia’s best friend and there’s been no word who’ll fill her role as a result of the bump up.

-According to TVLine, the cast of ABC’s soap Mistresses has had their contracts extended through September, meaning that the network is mulling over a potential second season renewal. The season finale is set to air September 9th.

-Nelson Franklin (Veep) has joined CBS’s The Millers as a series regular, while Australian comedian Kate Jenkinson has boarded ABC’s Super Fun Night as a neurotic Type A lawyer.

-FOX debuted a new promo for upcoming cop comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine during last night’s MLB All-Star Game.

This season, ABC opted for a more concentrated approach to premiering their programming, as they were still launching series in late October last season. Now, though, they have a few on either side of Premiere Week and will focus their attention on premiering a fair amount of their programming together. Interestingly, they’ll be facing the entirety of the CBS lineup during Premiere Week, which could eat into the live numbers for both networks and show why a staggered approach might be best for all involved.
