Deadline is reporting that Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) is expected to play one of the other two cop roles, while the hunt continues for someone to play female detective Ani Bezzerides. Rosario Dawson (Sin City), Kelly Reilly (Black Box), Jessica Biel (7th Heaven), Malin Akerman (Trophy Wife), Abigail Spencer (Rectify), Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones), Jaimie Alexander (Thor: The Dark World), and Brit Marling (Another Earth) were said to be invited to read for series creator Nic Pizzolatto, with Rachel McAdams (The Notebook) and Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice) also in the conversation for a place on the series.

The first season of True Detective received mountains of critical acclaim for its direction by Cary Joji Fukunaga and the performances from Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Neither McConaughey nor Harrelson will be back for the second season of True Detective, while Emmy winner Fukunaga will be replaced by Justin Lin, as the Fast & Furious director will direct the first two episodes of season two.

The second season of True Detective will begin production later this fall for a summer 2015 premiere. Additional casting should be announced/confirmed in the coming weeks, as should more concrete information about the seasonal plot.

Hart gets sidetracked after Maggie sets Cohle up with a friend at a C&W bar. Looking to establish a pattern of murder, Cohle pores over old case files, finding a connection with a woman assumed to have drowned years earlier.

True Detective will reportedly tell one complete story during its first season and move on to a different case/type of criminal in a (currently hypothetical) second season in a similar model to what The Killing was thought to be working under when it debuted in 2011. With each season being close-ended and the cast being scrubbed at the end of every season, a move that differentiates True Detective from fellow cable anthology American Horror Story, the series won’t be setting itself up for the same critical backlash that the AMC/Netflix crime drama had to endure at the end of its first season when the identity of the killer was not revealed as expected.

In addition to Harrelson and McConaughey, True Detective stars Michelle Monaghan (Source Code), Kevin Dunn (Veep), Alexandra Daddario (Parenthood), Tory Kittles (Sons of Anarchy), and Elizabeth Reaser (The Good Wife).

In addition to Harrelson and McConaughey, True Detective stars Michelle Monaghan (Source Code), Tory Kittles (Sons of Anarchy), Lili Simmons (Banshee), Elizabeth Reaser (The Good Wife), and Brad Carter (Smashed). The show was written by Nik Pizzalatto (The Killing) and directed by Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre), though considering its anthological status and the fact that the story of Cohle and Hart will be completed at the end of the first season, there’s no guarantee that either Pizzalatto or Fukunaga would return for the (currently hypothetical) second season. American Horror Story, the other major cable anthology, has kept creator Ryan Murphy actively involved for its first three seasons, while the writing staff that features the likes of Tim Minear, James Wong, and Jennifer Salt has remained stable, as well, so there’s a chance that both Pizzalatto and Fukunaga could return.

True Detective, which stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detective on the hunt for a serial killer, will make its series premiere on Sunday, January 12th at 9:00. The series, following the investigation that begins in 1985 and gets reopened in 2012, will have an eight-episode first season and features the likes of Alexandra Daddario, Michelle Monaghan, and Elizabeth Reaser. It’s HBO’s first winter drama since David Milch’s ill-fated Luck premiered in 2011.

The same night will see the third season of critically acclaimed comedy Girls making its debut with back-to-back new episodes at 10:00 and 10:30. The series was recently nominated for five Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for star/creator Lena Dunham. On Sunday, January 19th at 10:30, HBO will premiere new comedy Looking, which follows the exploits of three gay friends in San Francisco. Created by Michael Lannan and to be executive produced by Sarah Condon and Andrew Haigh, the series stars Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez, and Murray Bartlett. Guest stars for the first season include Russell Tovey and Scott Bakula.

It’ll be a pretty active few weeks for HBO at the close of the year, as the network will premiere two additional new comedies (British remake Getting On and Ja’mie Private School Girl, the latter from Chris Lilley) the last Sunday in November and the final season of Treme on December 1st. The three series were scheduled this way due to a shortened season of True Blood, which pushed the premiere of Boardwalk Empire up by two weeks and left a month with no new programming.

The reaction to True Detective will be interesting to watch, since there’s been a recent influx of serial killer dramas that could cause buzz to be lower than expected for a new HBO drama with movie star leads and a slick trailer. While it’s sure to earn its fair share of accolades, especially if rumors prove true and the series becomes an anthology, the series will have to contend with recent successes of The Bridge, The Killing, and The Following, as well as the shadow of Broadchurch‘s rapturous critical response, in order to stand out and continue HBO’s reputation for being “not just TV.”

It also has the added pressure of being the first in line for the next generation of HBO dramas, with True Blood ending next year, Treme concluding in December, and Boardwalk Empire cooling off after a blistering first three years of award recognition. There’s a chance it could end up as the only new HBO drama next year and if it ends up underwhelming, the network will be under the gun to find its next great drama, one that would likely have to be more boundary pushing than something like True Detective.

In addition to Harrelson and McConaughey, True Detective is set to star Michelle Monaghan (Source Code), Tory Kittles (Sons of Anarchy), Lili Simmons (Banshee), Elizabeth Reaser (The Good Wife), and Brad Carter (Smashed).

True Detective will premiere this January on HBO.

Starring Woody Harrelson (Natural Born Killers) as Detective Martin Hart and Matthew McConaughey (Magic Mike) as Detective Rust Cohle, True Detective tells the story of a 17-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana, a case that began in 1995 and was reopened in 2012. The series, whose first trailer will debut this Sunday before the fourth season premiere of Boardwalk Empire, will be framed by the detective’s testimony during the 2012 reopening and is set to feature the likes of Alexandra Daddario (Parenthood), Elizabeth Reaser (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2), Tory Kittles (Next), Michelle Monaghan (Source Code), and Kevin Dunn (Veep).

What should be HBO’s next move is deciding whether or not a new comedy should be premiered following the third season of Girls, as Enlightened was canceled this past spring. There are three comedies the network has picked up to series (gay-themed Looking; Getting On, based on the British series of the same name; and Togetherness, focusing on two couples living under the same roof) that could possibly be slotted there, but considering that they didn’t announce it along with True Detective, there’s no guarantee that any of them will be premiered in January. There’s an open spot in April with Family Tree‘s fate still up in the air; The Newsroom might not return to its summer slot next year, since creator Aaron Sorkin’s schedule might not accommodate such a move; and HBO will be saying goodbye to Eastbound & Down this fall, with Hello Ladies not promised a second season. In short, the network could conceivably avoid the midseason rush if they choose to and still have plenty of places to put their new programming, should they opt to run each episode of Girls at 10;00 and 10:30 following True Detective.
