Granted, the lineup was already falling before Men debuted late last month, but something had to be done to ensure the security of 2 Broke Girls, buckling under the weight of being the night’s centerpiece, and Mom, which has shown good retention behind Girls and keeps CBS in the good graces of creator Chuck Lorre. Critically reviled We Are Men was the most expendable part of the lineup and since Mike & Molly has a 22-episode order this season, its stable ratings could potentially help the night overall, though there’s no guarantee that Mom will hold as much of its audience as it has been holding of 2 Broke Girls.

CBS is in an interesting position in terms of their comedy slate, as How I Met Your Mother is ending this season and Two and a Half Men is on its last legs, so they need to cultivate at least a few newer comedies in hopes of positioning them for a long run. With 2 Broke Girls already sold into syndication, it couldn’t afford to be dragged down any further and have its value as a property damaged, but how much can it recover behind How I Met Your Mother?

Will you miss We Are Men? Should CBS have waited to see where it stabilized or did they have to make a move to save their night? Is Mike & Molly the answer to stopping the bleeding on Mondays and helping both 2 Broke Girls and Mom?

The series is the sixth pilot of the season to be given an early release and the first on CBS, following Trophy Wife, Back in the Game, The Goldbergs, Ironside, and Welcome to the Family. It’s one of four comedies that the network will be premiering this fall, along with The Crazy Ones, Mom, and The Millers, yet won’t be premiering along with the rest of the Monday night comedy lineup; since the final season premiere of How I Met Your Mother will be one-hour, We Are Men will be premiering the following week. Though releasing a pilot early is meant to increase sampling and spread word-of-mouth, it often results in lower live ratings and lowers the ceiling on what a show can achieve, so We Are Men will have the pressure of that, several CBS comedies waiting in the wings, and a second-week comedown for How I Met Your Mother to contend with when it makes its series premiere later this month. Will it be able to breakthrough despite the obstacles before it?

In addition to the four main cast members, We Are Men will also star Rebecca Breeds (Home and Away) as Frank’s daughter Jill, who he describes as the one positive thing that came from his series of failed marriages.

-The CBS Fall Preview Special is set to air Thursday, September 12th at 8:30 and will be hosted by We Are Men“s Tony Shalhoub, Jerry O”Connell, Kal Penn, and Chris Smith. The special will feature behind the scenes looks at each new fall show on the network this year, as well as cast interviews, and will be available on-demand through September 29th.

-Anne V and Lydia Hearst have joined Oxygen modeling competition The Face, where they”ll act as coaches to teams of aspiring models looking to become a brand ambassador for a well-known, national brand. They replace Coco Rocha and Karolina Kurkova, who coached during the first season, and join Nigel Barker, who will have an expanded role this season.

-WGN America has ordered 13-episode original drama Manhattan to series. Set to premiere in summer 2014, the series will be the network”s second original series launch in the coming year, following supernatural drama Salem, and will begin production in New Mexico this winter. From Sam Shaw (Masters of Sex), Manhattan follows a group of scientists as they attempt to build the world”s first atomic bomb and keep their mission a secret from the ones they love. No casting has been announced as of yet.

-An original song by country music legend Charlie Daniels will appear in the next episode of AMC western Hell on Wheels. Titled “Hell on Strings,” the instrumental will be featured in a scene where Bohannon and Louise Ellison dance in a local saloon.

–Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale is set to guest star on an episode of ABC Family comedy Baby Daddy. Set to shoot this November, the episode will be a part of the show”s third season in 2014.

-The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards have named four pairs of presenters for the September 22nd ceremony: Kerry Washington and Diahann Carroll; Amy Poehler and Tina Fey; Zooey and Emily Deschanel; and Allison Janney and Anna Faris. They join previously announced presenters Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.

-Casting: Annie Ilonzeh and Blair Redford will appear on Beauty and the Beast, with the former playing a high school friend of Catherine”s and the latter an Army buddy of Vincent”s who becomes a threat to the beast; Alexander Dreymon is set to recur on American Horror Story as a handsome man who moves next door to the coven”s academy; Downton Abbey“s Dan Stevens will voice biological computer TIM on The Tomorrow People; Josh Groban  a friend from Sydney”s past on The Crazy Ones; Keith David has joined Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and will voice the Cheshire Cat; and Smash alum Will Chase will appear on Nashville as Luke, a potential love interest for Rayna.

–Mistresses star Alyssa Milano has been tapped to host the third season of Project Runway All Stars on Lifetime, following one-season stints for model Angela Lindvall and model/actress Carolyn Murphy. Meanwhile, guest judges will include the likes of Abigail Breslin, Nick Cannon, and Debbie Harry. Premiering October 24th, the season will feature the following designers vying for another shot at the prize package, which features a spread in Marie Claire, a one-year position at Marie Claire as Contributing Editor, an all-expenses paid trip to Southeast Asia,  professional hair styling and photography for all of the designer”s upcoming fashion shows throughout the year, and an entire year”s worth of beauty products for their fashion shows as well as professional makeup artist services for their debut show, among other perks for coming out on top this season.

-At their TCA session, NBC revealed that reality-competition series Fashion Star has been canceled after two seasons, while Celebrity Apprentice is currently casting (but hasn”t been renewed as of yet) and canceled Anne Heche comedy Save Me shot 13 episodes, seven of which won”t air. In addition, pilots Wonderland and The Donor Party are said to be on hold, The Gilded Age (from Downton Abbey“s Julian Fellowes) is alive, and Dick Wolf”s Girlfriend in a Coma is in negotiations with David Frankel to executive produce and direct.

-NBC also gave a peek into their miniseries development cycle. Aside from A.D., After the Bible, which will premiere during the 2014-2015 season, the network has projects in the works based on Cleopatra, Hillary Clinton, Rosemary”s Baby, Stephen King”s Tommyknockers, and the Pilgrims” journey to Plymouth.

-Syfy has greenlit Dominion, based on 2007 fantasy/horror film Legion, to pilot. Scott Stewart, who co-wrote and directed Legion, is back to direct the pilot, which is set 25 years in the future after a war between an army of angels and mankind.

-Casting news: Jurnee Smollett has joined the fifth season of Parenthood, where she”ll be playing Kristina”s political campaign manager Heather in a major recurring role; Sam Elliott Ron Swanson”s Eagletonian doppleganger on an upcoming episode of Parks and Recreation, the same one that will feature Kristen Bell as Eagleton”s Leslie Knope; American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy announced that Denis O”Hare will be appearing on the show”s third season, though no details about his role were disclosed; in addition to recurring on HBO”s upcoming medical comedy Getting On, Emmy nominee Molly Shannon is set to recur on Raising Hope as the new owner of Howdy”s, beginning with the fourth episode of the season; ER vet Parminder Nagra has joined NBC”s The Blacklist and a mentor to one of the female FBI agents; Heidi Klum and Henry Winkler will be stopping by Parks and Recreation next season, playing the mayor of a small Danish town and Jean-Ralphio”s father, respectively; Rome“s Indira Varma to play Ellaria Sand on the fourth season of Game of Thrones, premiering next spring; Steve Cabral is the latest to join ABC Family”s Ravenswood and Raymond Collins.

-The Hub has announced their first Halloween bash, set to air October 26th. The event will celebrate the best of  Halloween, including the first-ever nationwide costume competition with one  finalist being chosen from every state in America. Details are set to be released in August.

–Please Like Me, a scripted comedy from Australian comic Josh Thomas, has been renewed for a second season by Pivot. The series, which debuts August 1st, stars Thomas as 20-year-old Josh, whose life becomes in disarray when he”s broken up with by his girlfriend, realizes he might be gay, and moves in with his suicidal mother. -The ESPN 30 for 30 series of documentaries will add six new entries this fall: October 1st – Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau (centering on big wave surfer Eddie Aikau); October 8th – Free Spirits (a look at former ABA franchise Spirits of St. Louis); October 15th – No Mas (analyzing the infamous boxing match between Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard); October 22nd – Big Shot (about the 1996 New York Islanders); October 29th – This is What They Want (following the improbable run of tennis great Jimmy Connors at the 1991 U.S. Open); and November 5th – Tonya and Nancy (chronicling the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics).

-Key art for four CBS fall series has been released. Included are Robin Williams comedy The Crazy Ones; Chuck Lorre-created Mom; family comedy The Millers; and We Are Men, which will air Mondays at 8:30. Art for the network”s lone new fall drama Hostages was also recently released. This fall, CBS is premiering four new comedies and one new drama, as they look for

replacements for How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men. On Mondays, the network will be debuting single-cam ensemble We Are Men, which stars Kal Penn and Tony Shalhoub; Chuck Lorre”s Mom, about a newly sober woman (Anna Faris) working in Napa Valley and dealing with an overly critical mother; and Hostages, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Thursdays will see family comedy The Millers leading out of The Big Bang Theory and leading into The Crazy Ones, starring Robin Williams as an advertising executive and Sarah Michelle Gellar as his Type-A daughter.
