The seventh season premiere of Sons of Anarchy now ranks as the second highest-rated scripted season premiere of 2014, besting Game of Thrones and trailing only The Walking Dead. It’s been a steady climb for the series, as the Kurt Sutter creation has raced ahead 228% in total viewers and 256% in adults 18-49 of the numbers it put up for its series premiere.

With 10:00 competition consisting of two decently rated procedurals and a new show in a troublesome spot for ABC, Sons of Anarchy should only grow throughout the course of its final season. It wouldn’t even be surprising to see the show, which earned a L+SD 3.2 demo rating for its premiere, hit series highs several times between now and December, as tension mounts for Jax Teller’s final ride and the broadcast competition continues to cannibalize each other. The only question now seems to be what form the show will continue, as it seems unlikely that FX will want to pass up the opportunity to capitalize on the interest in the SAMCRO world and the story of how the Tellers came to be.

The seventh season of Sons of Anarchy will begin 10 days following the events of season six; while Jax is in jail on parole violation, devastated over the loss of Tara and what that means for his children, he sets in motion the machinations that will lead to the vengeance he feels he deserves. But even if Jax does find retribution for Tara’s murder, will he be able to live with himself afterwards?

Season six of Sons of Anarchy became its most-watched to date, earning nearly 7.5 million total viewers and 5 million adults 18-49. The season was also the  most-watched of any original series in the network’s history in total viewers, adults 18-49 and other key demos, in addition to earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.

The Season 6 premier of the show got an all-time high rating on Tuesday, setting a splendid record of an average of 5.87 million viewers, which is more than the last year’s premier (5.37 million) and much more than the season 4 premier in 2011, which received a viewership of 4.39 million. The Kurt Sutter Drama, which is about a runaway bike club was the highest watched show on Television on Tuesday night!

According to FX, this premier episode of Sons of Anarchy’s Season 6, which also the second last season of the series, is likely to become the no. 1 rated single cast episode in the history of FX. This record can only be confirmed once the channel gets its Live+7 data in about three weeks from now.

The star audience of the premiere episode, majorly comprised of the adult demographic of 18-49 years, being more than two-third of the total viewers of the show. Sons of Anarchy also earned a rating of 3.1 from a viewership of around 3.94 million people of the same age group, much higher than a previous 2.8 and 2.5, in the previous seasons.

While, ‘Sons’ was the top-rated TV show on Tuesday night in the 18-49 demo, it was followed by NBC’s ‘America’s Got Talent’ with a rating of 2.3. Sons also ruled other adult demos like 18-34, 25-54, men 18-34, men 18-49, women 18-34 and lastly, women 18-49.
The show has always been a hit with the make audience, but Tuesday night premier saw a striking upsurge of 43% in the women audience of 18-34 years, while last year’s premier had a women audience of only 35%. Great Going Sons!

Extended premieres have become something of a norm for FX recently, with The Americans and The Bridge enjoying supersized premieres this year. Sons is an unusual case, though, as it has had both extended premieres and lengthier episodes in the middle of the season. There’s no word on whether any other season six episodes will be longer than an hour; however, it’s a good bet that there’ll be at least one non-final extended episode, likely close to the end of the season.

Season five of Sons of Anarchy left off with Jax getting what he wanted – Clay is no longer SAMCRO president due to being framed for Pope’s murder, meaning that Jax can spread the message of John Teller from the highest seat in the club. However, while trying to halt years of self-destructive traditions that SAMCRO has continually indulged in, he has to deal with the possibility of Tara going to prison for conspiracy to commit murder. Will he be able to keep her out of prison or, at the very least, keep himself together while she’s inside?

Three former FX programs had their premiere dates announced in recent days, as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League, and Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell will premiere Wednesday, September 4th on newly formed FXX. The only show that Sons will air along with this fall is American Horror Story: Coven, which will likely premiere in early October.

FXX will aim at the younger viewers, think the raunchy 18-34 year old crowd. Why raunchy? Because moving with the netlet will be FX staple comedies It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, The League,  and Legit.. Not exactly the same crowd other younger skewing networks go for, so it should find quite a nice niche for itself. There are also plans to develop new, scripted dramas for the network as well. It will launch in more than 74 million homes and likely take over the FX Soccer channel. I’ll wait while you rush to see if your current carrier provides the channel or if you’re going to need to start a campaign.

FXM will target 25-54 year old viewers (thank you FX for believing people don’t drop off the planet after the age of 49) and is planning on developing and airing limited series and miniseries. There was no mention on the initial rollout to the number of households. Personally, I’m extremely excited about this idea. How well this network does could go a long way to determining the future of network programming in general. For years we’ve been debating the relevance of a show with a lifespan with an expectancy of decades without cast changes and how the audience reacts to it. AMC rolled the dice on altering the original format of the The Killing by extended a wrapped up murder story in one season, and failed. They’re giving it another try, but with an entire network focusing on one thing, the dam could finally break.

The FX Suite of networks will also include an app with expanded content on-demand to authenticated users and an FX Movie Bin with over 40 on-demand movies per month.

In addition to everything mentioned above, FX have also amassed a large amount of acquired series and theatrical movies to keep their networks stocked with content.

Other news at the up fronts included the anticipated announcement additional season pickups of those series mentioned above as well as Justified, Sons of Anarchy and new programming from Ang Lee, the Coen Brothers, Guillermo del Toro, Alexander Payne, Sam Mendes and Paul Giamatti. The Coen Brothers will be a limited series version of their former theatrical release Fargo (presumably for FXM?) and Guillermo del Toro will produce The Strain “a unique, biological approach” to vampirism.

The Americans had already been renewed for a second season, American Horror Story : Coven will be out in time for Halloween and the fourth season of Louie will premiere in May 2014.
