Netflix scored two slots on the list with House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, while other new entries included FX spy drama The Americans, Showtime period drama Masters of Sex, ABC political soap Scandal, and HBO political comedy Veep, the latter of which is coming off Emmy wins for Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Tony Hale. The rest of the AFI Top 10 of 2013 list was made up of the most recent seasons of Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Good Wife, and Game of Thrones.

It’s been a particularly award-heavy time for the TV industry, as the Writers Guild, Producers Guild, and International Press Academy have all announced nominations for their respective awards in recent weeks. Freshman series that have made noise include Masters of Sex and Orange is the New Black, both of which stand a reasonable chance of breaking into Golden Globe, SAG, and Emmy races later in the season.

Masters of Sex will become the second original scripted series debut of the year for Showtime, following the success (and subsequent renewal) of Ray Donovan, which currently holds the distinction of the highest rated series premiere in network history. Though the period drama might not be able to match that success, if only due to its potentially off-putting subject matter and the crowdedness of Sundays in fall, it should have a strong lead-in in the third season of Homeland and even stronger reviews to fall back on.

In addition to Sheen and Caplan, Masters of Sex also stars Caitlin Fitzgerald (It’s Complicated), Nicholas D’Agosto (Heroes), and Teddy Sears (American Horror Story), while featuring the likes of Beau Bridges (The Closer), Allison Janney (The West Wing), and Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs) in recurring roles.

–Marriage Bootcamp: Bridezillas has been renewed for a second season by WE tv after growing nearly 50% from premiere to finale and helping the network become number one on Fridays in W18-49 and W18-34. The next ten episodes of the series, which puts troubled married couples through an intensive two-week bootcamp, will debut in early 2014.

-Food Network has revealed that four-episode Rachel & Guy: Kids Cook-Off will premiere this September. The series is a challenge between Rachael Ray and Guy Fieri compete to see who can better coach a team of young chefs. Through challenges related to time sensitive meals and food mash-ups, as well as weekly pop quizzes, the two teams of four will be whittled down to one winner, who will receive a webseries on FoodNetwork.com.

-Country duo Florida-Georgia Line will perform their hit single “Cruise” at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards, FOX announced today. They join previously announced performers Paramore and One Direction in appearing at the live event, airing Sunday, August 11th and featuring Jersey Shore alum JWoWW on red carpet duty.

–Dancing with the Stars champion Derek Hough is set to host Family Dance-Off, a one-hour special airing August 25th on ABC. In the special, five families who love to dance will get the opportunity to perform and compete on a Hollywood stage before a live studio audience.

-Syfy will be airing Face Off: The Veterans Strike Back on Tuesday, August 6th at 9:00, which will include exclusive interviews with the eight veteran contestants returning for another shot at the title, looks back at the four previous seasons, and a sneak peek at the next season of the show. Season five of Face Off will premiere the following Tuesday at 9:00.

-Do you want Sharknado merchandise? Well, you’re in luck, as Syfy and The Asylum have partnered with Earthbound LLC in a deal that will produce merchandise for the original film, including fashion tees, bags, posters, accessories and costumes to gaming, among other areas. The first wave of Sharknado shirts will hit stores in the coming weeks, while a sequel is set to premiere next July.

–Ripper Street has added several new faces for its second season, which will premiere on BBC America in December. Among the additions are David Costabile (Lincoln) as Jackson’s brother Daniel; Damien Molony (Being Human) as Detective Constable Albert Flight; Joseph Mawle (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) as K Division’s Inspector Jedidah Shine; and Leanne Best (Stepping Up) as Jane Cobden, the first woman elected to London County Council.

-ABC’s Revenge will have an original novel penned about the training process Emily underwent with Takeda in order to be ready to take down the Graysons. “Schooled in Revenge”, written by Jesse Lasky, follows Ava Winters, an heiress to Napa’s Starling Vineyards whose fiancé robs her blind before leaving town. With nowhere to go, she heads to Rebun Island where she meets Emily Thorne, who imparts wisdom about the importance of seeking justice. But how will Ava’s mission be linked to the missions of the four other people on the island? “Schooled in Revenge” will be available on August 20th.

–Helix, the next Syfy original series, began production in Montreal this past weekend and added Jordan Hayes (House at the End of the Street), Meegwun Fairbrother (The Time Traveler), Catherine Lemieux (White House Down), and Neil Napier (300) to its cast. Also announced was that Friday Night Lights director Jeffrey Reiner would be helming the first episode, which should debut in January. The thriller, about a group of scientists who retreat to an Arctic facility to study a possible disease outbreak, will be executive produced by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica), showrunner Steven Maeda (The X-Files), and Lynda Obst (Contact).

-At their TCA session, Hulu revealed the premiere dates for its next four original series and information about other shows coming to the online streaming service. In addition to the next seasons of Misfits and Moone Boy, the following will be arriving on Hulu in the near future.

-Yet another cable net is throwing its hat into the increasingly difficult scripted arena, as WE tv ordered The Divide to series today. From Oscar nominee Richard LaGravanese (Behind the Candleabra, The Fisher King) and co-created by Tony Goldwyn (Scandal), the one-hour drama follows a woman with The Innocence Initiative who works on having an inmate released that she believes was wrongly convicted of murder. Along the way, she tangles with a morally gray district attorney and how her past has colored her present viewpoint. Once in contention for a pickup from AMC, the series will star Marin Ireland (Homeland), Damon Gupton (Prime Suspect), Clarke Peters (Treme), and Paul Schneider (Parks and Recreation).

-In addition to the pickup of The Divide, WE announced three scripted series in development: All American Woman, which follows three generations of women whose lives unfold against the backdrop of a magazine; Dirty, where a financier is forced to live and work with her maid; and Headhunters, examining women”s attempts to confront the ambiguity and conflicting choices that surround their lives today.

-According to Deadline, ABC has The Assets for 2014. Based on the book Circle of Treason: A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed by Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille, the series will “look inside the true, personal stories of the conclusion of the Cold War as told by the keepers of the nation’s secrets: the CIA.”

-Casting news: True Blood alum Michelle Forbes has joined the second season of Chicago Fire as a consultant with the State Fire Marshal”s Office; Heather Graham and Ellen Burstyn are the first actors cast in Lifetime”s upcoming Flowers in the Attic telepic (yes, that Flowers in the Attic); due to the unavailability of Tom Ellis, Once Upon a Time has named Sean Maguire their new Robin Hood; Oscar nominee Terrence Howard has become the latest member of the Wayward Pines cast, joining Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, and Melissa Leo in the adaptation of the best-selling thriller.

-IFC has officially renewed Maron for an expanded second season. Moving from 10 to 13 episodes, the series, which follows writer/comedian/podcast host Marc Maron, returns in 2014.

-TVLand has given comedy The Exes 10 additional episodes, as it”s pacing 9% above its prior season average and up 130% versus TV Land”s  primetime average among its key demo of Adults 25-54. The show currently airs Wednesdays at 10:30.

–Jericho, Swingtown, and Wolf Lake are all available to stream on CBS.com as a part of the network”s Second Look feature this summer. The first follows residents of a small Kansas town dealing with the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, while the second is a period drama that follows swingers of the 1970s and the last takes place in a Pacific Northwest town populated by werewolves.

-The CW has released the first image of Lindsey Gort as a young Samantha Jones, who she”ll be playing on the upcoming season of The Carrie Diaries. There”s no word yet as to how she”s introduced or what type of role she”ll play in her future best friend”s life.

The series, based on the novel “Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, The Couple Who Taught America How To Love” by Thomas Maier, will document their rise from researchers in St. Louis to prominent pop culture figures during the sexual revolution, as they appeared on several magazine covers and talk shows to talk about their work. The series also stars the likes of Caitlin Fitzgerald, Nick D’Agosto, and Teddy Sears.

The series premiere of Ray Donovan airs Sunday, June 30th at 10:00 following the final season premiere of Dexter, while Masters of Sex is set to debut Sunday, September 29th at 10:00 following the season premiere of Homeland.
