Hell on Wheels becomes something of a cable anomaly with its renewal, as Saturdays have become the no man’s land of the television industry, not exactly conducive to survival of original scripted series. However, by concentrating its recently acquired library of western movies on the night, AMC was able to grow the show’s audience during season three, where it drew an average of 3.3 million viewers, live and with three days of time shifting. While this doesn’t mean that cable networks are going to suddenly discover the value of Saturday programming, considering that Hell on Wheels thriving is a special case, the fact that the show was able to make it on a traditionally lower-viewed night means that your favorite middling Sunday performer might not be as dead as you think it is.

-The CBS Fall Preview Special is set to air Thursday, September 12th at 8:30 and will be hosted by We Are Men“s Tony Shalhoub, Jerry O”Connell, Kal Penn, and Chris Smith. The special will feature behind the scenes looks at each new fall show on the network this year, as well as cast interviews, and will be available on-demand through September 29th.

-Anne V and Lydia Hearst have joined Oxygen modeling competition The Face, where they”ll act as coaches to teams of aspiring models looking to become a brand ambassador for a well-known, national brand. They replace Coco Rocha and Karolina Kurkova, who coached during the first season, and join Nigel Barker, who will have an expanded role this season.

-WGN America has ordered 13-episode original drama Manhattan to series. Set to premiere in summer 2014, the series will be the network”s second original series launch in the coming year, following supernatural drama Salem, and will begin production in New Mexico this winter. From Sam Shaw (Masters of Sex), Manhattan follows a group of scientists as they attempt to build the world”s first atomic bomb and keep their mission a secret from the ones they love. No casting has been announced as of yet.

-An original song by country music legend Charlie Daniels will appear in the next episode of AMC western Hell on Wheels. Titled “Hell on Strings,” the instrumental will be featured in a scene where Bohannon and Louise Ellison dance in a local saloon.

–Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale is set to guest star on an episode of ABC Family comedy Baby Daddy. Set to shoot this November, the episode will be a part of the show”s third season in 2014.

-The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards have named four pairs of presenters for the September 22nd ceremony: Kerry Washington and Diahann Carroll; Amy Poehler and Tina Fey; Zooey and Emily Deschanel; and Allison Janney and Anna Faris. They join previously announced presenters Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.

-Casting: Annie Ilonzeh and Blair Redford will appear on Beauty and the Beast, with the former playing a high school friend of Catherine”s and the latter an Army buddy of Vincent”s who becomes a threat to the beast; Alexander Dreymon is set to recur on American Horror Story as a handsome man who moves next door to the coven”s academy; Downton Abbey“s Dan Stevens will voice biological computer TIM on The Tomorrow People; Josh Groban  a friend from Sydney”s past on The Crazy Ones; Keith David has joined Once Upon a Time in Wonderland and will voice the Cheshire Cat; and Smash alum Will Chase will appear on Nashville as Luke, a potential love interest for Rayna.

–Mistresses star Alyssa Milano has been tapped to host the third season of Project Runway All Stars on Lifetime, following one-season stints for model Angela Lindvall and model/actress Carolyn Murphy. Meanwhile, guest judges will include the likes of Abigail Breslin, Nick Cannon, and Debbie Harry. Premiering October 24th, the season will feature the following designers vying for another shot at the prize package, which features a spread in Marie Claire, a one-year position at Marie Claire as Contributing Editor, an all-expenses paid trip to Southeast Asia,  professional hair styling and photography for all of the designer”s upcoming fashion shows throughout the year, and an entire year”s worth of beauty products for their fashion shows as well as professional makeup artist services for their debut show, among other perks for coming out on top this season.

-CBS has opted to delay the series premiere of Greg Garcia’s The Millers in favor of running two episodes of The Big Bang Theory on Thursday, September 26th, likely in order to boost the series premiere of The Crazy Ones, starring Robin Williams and Sarah Michelle Gellar. -Joining Maggie Gyllenhaal in The Honourable Woman, an eight-part Sundance miniseries, will be Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta), Janet McTeer (The White Queen), Eve Best (Nurse Jackie), Lubna Azbal (Paradise Now), and Igal Naor (300: Rise of an Empire), the network announced Monday. The thriller will follow a woman who inherits her father’s arms company and uses it to laying high-spec data cabling networks between Israel and the West Bank.

-Robin Thicke is set to perform “Blurred Lines”, his first number one single, on America’s Got Talent on Wednesday, July 31st. The single is taken from the album of the same name, which sees its release the day prior to his appearance on the NBC talent competition.

-Darren Criss and Lucy Hale have been named hosts for the 2013 Teen Choice Awards, airing live August 11th at 8:00 on FOX. This will be the first time they’ll be hosting the show, which will feature appearances from the likes of Russell Westbrook, Rebel Wilson, and Demi Lovato, as well as performances from Paramore and One Direction.

-Disney Channel has renewed Gravity Falls for a second season. No information about debut date or episode count has been released.

-Casting news: Oscar nominee Annette Bening may heading to her first series regular television role, as she’s collaborating with Jay Roach (Game Change) on an HBO comedy about a casting director from New Mexico. Meanwhile, Orange is the New Black has added Lorraine Touissant (The Fosters) as a woman who used children to help run her drug business and boosted Danielle Brooks (aka Taystee) to a series regular. Sharknado alum Aubrey Peeples is set to recur on Nashville as a reality singing competition runner-up who seems as sweet and gracious as can be.

-International recording artist Labrinth will be performing “Beneath Your Beautiful,” his single with Emeli Sande, July 24th on America”s Got Talent. The song hit the top spot in the UK and Ireland, went Top 10 in twenty countries, and has almost 52 million VEVO views.

-Yet another cable net is throwing its hat into the increasingly difficult scripted arena, as WE tv ordered The Divide to series today. From Oscar nominee Richard LaGravanese (Behind the Candleabra, The Fisher King) and co-created by Tony Goldwyn (Scandal), the one-hour drama follows a woman with The Innocence Initiative who works on having an inmate released that she believes was wrongly convicted of murder. Along the way, she tangles with a morally gray district attorney and how her past has colored her present viewpoint. Once in contention for a pickup from AMC, the series will star Marin Ireland (Homeland), Damon Gupton (Prime Suspect), Clarke Peters (Treme), and Paul Schneider (Parks and Recreation).

-In addition to the pickup of The Divide, WE announced three scripted series in development: All American Woman, which follows three generations of women whose lives unfold against the backdrop of a magazine; Dirty, where a financier is forced to live and work with her maid; and Headhunters, examining women”s attempts to confront the ambiguity and conflicting choices that surround their lives today.

-According to Deadline, ABC has The Assets for 2014. Based on the book Circle of Treason: A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed by Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille, the series will “look inside the true, personal stories of the conclusion of the Cold War as told by the keepers of the nation’s secrets: the CIA.”

-Casting news: True Blood alum Michelle Forbes has joined the second season of Chicago Fire as a consultant with the State Fire Marshal”s Office; Heather Graham and Ellen Burstyn are the first actors cast in Lifetime”s upcoming Flowers in the Attic telepic (yes, that Flowers in the Attic); due to the unavailability of Tom Ellis, Once Upon a Time has named Sean Maguire their new Robin Hood; Oscar nominee Terrence Howard has become the latest member of the Wayward Pines cast, joining Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, and Melissa Leo in the adaptation of the best-selling thriller.

-IFC has officially renewed Maron for an expanded second season. Moving from 10 to 13 episodes, the series, which follows writer/comedian/podcast host Marc Maron, returns in 2014.

-TVLand has given comedy The Exes 10 additional episodes, as it”s pacing 9% above its prior season average and up 130% versus TV Land”s  primetime average among its key demo of Adults 25-54. The show currently airs Wednesdays at 10:30.

–Jericho, Swingtown, and Wolf Lake are all available to stream on CBS.com as a part of the network”s Second Look feature this summer. The first follows residents of a small Kansas town dealing with the aftermath of a nuclear disaster, while the second is a period drama that follows swingers of the 1970s and the last takes place in a Pacific Northwest town populated by werewolves.

-The CW has released the first image of Lindsey Gort as a young Samantha Jones, who she”ll be playing on the upcoming season of The Carrie Diaries. There”s no word yet as to how she”s introduced or what type of role she”ll play in her future best friend”s life.

-ION Television has added encores of Burn Notice and White Collar to its programming slate, which includes the likes of Criminal Minds, Psych, and House. There’s no word yet on when they’ll make their channel debuts, however. While Burn Notice is currently in its final season, White Collar returns this fall.

–Person of Interest fans are in for a treat at Comic-Con, as CBS has issued nearly 40,000 limited-edition hotel keycards featuring images from the hit drama. Included are one with Reese and Fitch keeping a watchful eye and one meant as a response to people thinking that the show could be a work of fiction, given recent world events.

-Put into development at Discovery today is an untitled miniseries centering on William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, Scottish patriots who were forced to deal with King Edward I of England taking over Scotland and the discontent this produced among their people.

–Ray Donovan has become the first freshman Showtime series to see a rise in the ratings for its second episode, as it garnered a 15% increase this past Sunday. Thus far in its premiere week, the fixer drama is pacing 49 percent ahead of Homeland‘s freshman season premiere week. Meanwhile, Dexter grew from its highest-rated premiere ever, marking the first time the show has increased its numbers from a premiere to a second episode.

-Former American Idol judge Paula Abdul will guest judge on tonight’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance, which will feature the top 18 battling it out to stay in the competition.

-The entire first season of CBS drama Unforgettable has been made available on CBS.com, the CBS app, and various CBS Audience Network partner sites. The series, which stars Poppy Montgomery, returns for a second season on Sunday, July 28th.

-Syfy and Trion Worlds will be giving fans of Defiance a chance to become further involved in the show, thanks to the “Play the Game. Join the Show.” in-game contest. The ten Ark Hunters who complete the most Major Arkfall events between July 8 and July 30 will compete for a chance to have their  character written onto the show. These ten semifinalists will be fleshed out  with backstories written by the show’s writing staff, which will then be  featured on Facebook, where Defiance fans will choose their five favorites. A member of the Defiance team will then select the winner, who will appear on the show. Season two of Defiance premieres in June 2014.

-NBCUniversal is set to distribute the syndicated talk show of Meredith Viera, which will debut in the fall of 2014. The show will be taped on a set meant to resemble her home and feature a mix of feel-good human interest stories, celebrities guests with stories to tell, and various lifestyle segments.

-Jenna Elfman has officially been cast in NBC’s Growing Up Fisher (formerly The Family Guide), taking over for Parker Posey. The show will premiere this midseason.

-Esquire Network has released an extended look at The Getaway, a new original series that explores the world’s greatest cities through the eyes  of a revolving cast of travel-loving celebrities. Here’s who to expect during the first season and where they’ll be going:

The third season of Hell on Wheels will reportedly deemphasize Bohannon’s quest to pay back those responsible for the death of his wife and turn its attention to the expanding nation and Union Pacific’s status in the railroad industry. Taking place in 1867, the season finds business, religion, and Wall Street becoming bigger than ever, while Bohannon has to lead Union Pacific in a race against Central Pacific and confront the price that railway expansion has on the rest of the country. There are environmental and cultural prices for the company he works for to prosper and he has to come to terms with that in order to be the first railroad to make it across the country. Will Bohannon be able to go about his business and make the company prosper as a result? Or is his conscience going to get the best of him and potentially cost him a position at Union Pacific?

Hell on Wheels stars Anson Mount (In Her Shoes), Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), Common (Smokin’ Aces), Ben Esler (The Pacific), and Phil Burke (This is 40).

What’s fun about the festival is the relatively laid back atmosphere in correlation to other festivals. Someday, ATX might become a king among festivals, but for now it’s a prince and the size is perfect, giving attendees the ability to mingle and meet people you otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity. If you’re in the Austin area, definitely try to make it.

Not only are there more formal, scheduled events, but community events, as well, such as the Friday Night Lights episode airing with special guests milling around, screenings of AMC programming such as a preview of the August premiere episode of Low Winter Sun and a season 2 Hell on Wheels, cast chats with Boy Meets World and Friday Night Lights and those are just the things you can do without a ticket. ATX TELEVISION FESTIVAL OPENS WITH

THE NETFLIX SERIES “ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT”

Austin, TX- Monday, June 3, 2013 – ATX Television Festival is thrilled to announce Opening Night Programming courtesy of Netflix.  To open Season Two of ATX Television Festival, Netflix will feature the return of the beloved series Arrested Development, followed by a Q&A with members of the cast. Netflix is the premiere destination for original programming, making the platform a perfect partner for ATX Television Festival, which takes place June 6-9 in Austin, TX.

In addition to hosting the opening night festivities, Netflix has joined ATX Television Festival as a premiere sponsor of the festival.

“A new episode of Hell On Wheels on Saturday night after a full day of western fan favorites is going to be like the saddle on top of the horse,” said Charlie Collier, President and General Manager, AMC. “This is a programmer’s dream – to have a genre specific, 14-hour lead-in to one of your highest rated originals. We are so excited about this opportunity to entertain AMC’s audience in a new way.”

“Hell On Wheels showrunner, John Wirth, says the new season “will be a western about work — the building of the railroad, the binding of the nation after the Civil War, and the rehabilitation of the men who lived and fought their way through those exploits. This season we’re placing Cullen Bohannon at the center of the show, and taking him away from the revenge motive which propelled him into the series.” He continues, “AMC has raised the bar for television dramas, they’ve set the gold standard. There’s nothing else like this on television.”

Hell on Wheels was the second highest series launch in AMC history and was also a top 20 program for engagement among age 25-54 (IAG) for the broadcast season for 2011-2012. The series’ second season wrapped in October 2012 with an average of 2.4 million total viewers and 3.2 million viewers with Live plus 7.
