Instead of Mom, CBS will be airing reruns of The Big Bang Theory at 8:30 on Mondays until The Millers premieres. The move is to give Scorpion the biggest lead-in possible without using up the Big Bang originals necessary to launch the network’s Thursday lineup next month. However, the Mom/Millers switch isn’t permanent, as both shows will return to their previously slated time slots on January 5th and 8th, respectively.

The best case scenario here is that Big Bang encores steady Scorpion, Mom benefits from the additional Big Bang exposure, and The Millers provides a steady enough presence to keep Mondays from faltering. There are some worrisome aspects to the plan, though, as 2 Broke Girls is one of the network’s weaker lead-ins, The Millers is a time slot hit, and the constant shuffling of shows will do nothing to set viewer patterns this early in the season. When people are still trying to figure out what to watch when, moving shows back and forth doesn’t seem like the best strategy, even if there is sound logic for each individual move. Collectively, they could easily test the loyalty of the CBS audience and threaten to halt what momentum Mom has garnered in the off season and the promising start that Scorpion got off to this past Monday.

On the drama side, NCIS, NCIS: Los Angeles, Person of Interest, CSI, Hawaii: Five-0, Blue Bloods, Criminal Minds, Elementary, and The Good Wife will be returning next season, with The Mentalist, Intelligence, and Hostages left of the renewal flurry.

On the comedy side, 2 Broke Girls, The Millers, Mike & Molly, Mom, and Two and a Half Men will join The Big Bang Theory on the network’s slate for next season. Not receiving a renewal at this time was The Crazy Ones, which has noticeably softened in the ratings in recent weeks. CBS will be premiering two additional comedies (Friends with Better Lives and Bad Teacher) before the end of the season.

In the world of alternative programming, The Amazing Race and Undercover Boss got picked up for next season, joining already renewed Survivor, while 60 Minutes and 48 Hours will also be returning.

Last season, CBS cancelled every series that didn’t receive a renewal in March aside from those that were embroiled in contract negotiations (Criminal Minds and Two and a Half Men), so it’s not a good sign for those that didn’t receive a renewal this go-around. They’re not necessarily dead, but shows like The Crazy Ones and The Mentalist are going to have to overperform for the rest of the season if they have any hope of earning a shot on the schedule.

CBS will be unveiling its schedule for next season, which will include Thursday Night Football, on Wednesday, May 14th.

Mom hasn’t been the breakout hit that some were forecasting, but it’s shown high retention out of 2 Broke Girls and the Big Bang Theory repeat that it aired with this past Monday, so with that key asset, as well as highly valued creative auspices, a full season was guaranteed. The Crazy Ones has become the season’s number one new comedy in viewers and the 18-49 demographic, rebounding last night from two weeks of worrying post-series premiere falls. The series is the network’s first attempt at single-cam comedy in several seasons and has garnered positive reviews for its ensemble chemistry. The Millers has also already steadied itself in the ratings, rising in the same way that The Crazy Ones did and keeping itself above a 3.0 in the 18-49 demographic, something that only two other CBS comedies can currently say.

CBS is in a transitional period in terms of their comedy slate, as How I Met Your Mother is on its way out and Two and a Half Men looks increasingly less strong. Though none of these three are huge hits (yet), they’re important pieces toward starting off the next era of CBS comedy on solid footing. The network has several other comedies yet to premiere this season, including the series adaptation of Bad Teacher and James Van Der Beek-starrer Friends with Better Lives, that could provide them with the breakout hit they’re still searching for.

Mom airs Mondays at 9:00 on CBS, with The Millers airing at 8:30 on Thursdays behind The Big Bang Theory. The Crazy Ones, meanwhile, airs Thursdays at 9:00.

Granted, the lineup was already falling before Men debuted late last month, but something had to be done to ensure the security of 2 Broke Girls, buckling under the weight of being the night’s centerpiece, and Mom, which has shown good retention behind Girls and keeps CBS in the good graces of creator Chuck Lorre. Critically reviled We Are Men was the most expendable part of the lineup and since Mike & Molly has a 22-episode order this season, its stable ratings could potentially help the night overall, though there’s no guarantee that Mom will hold as much of its audience as it has been holding of 2 Broke Girls.

CBS is in an interesting position in terms of their comedy slate, as How I Met Your Mother is ending this season and Two and a Half Men is on its last legs, so they need to cultivate at least a few newer comedies in hopes of positioning them for a long run. With 2 Broke Girls already sold into syndication, it couldn’t afford to be dragged down any further and have its value as a property damaged, but how much can it recover behind How I Met Your Mother?

The first single-camera comedy CBS has ordered in several seasons, The Crazy Ones stars Robin Williams as advertising genius Simon Roberts and Sarah Michelle Gellar as his Type-A daughter Sydney, who was recently named partner at their firm. While the two butt heads in terms of approaching to their clients and the philosophies that guide the way they conduct business, things always end up working out well for them, considering that they balance the other out and provide prospective clients with two very different (yet valid) ways of helping their business.

Repeating at 8:30 will be Mom, where Anna Faris portrays Christy, a newly sober single mother who works as a waitress in Napa Valley. The Chuck Lorre-created comedy, which had a modest opening this past Monday, finds Christy having to sort out her increasingly complicated life – her mother Bonnie, a fellow addict; her affair with Gabriel, her married boss; her two children, a mature-beyond-her-years teenage girl and a blunt little boy; and her strained relationship with her son’s irresponsible father. Can Christy find some way to balance everything going on in her life and manage the temptation she faces every single day at her job?

The first episode of political thriller Hostages will then air at 9:00. From producer Jerry Bruckheimer, the series stars Toni Collette as prominent surgeon Dr. Ellen Sanders, who has been personally selected by the President to perform what should be a routine operation. However, Ellen and her family are soon taken hostage by rogue FBI Agent Duncan Carlisle; he orders Ellen to assassinate the President while she’s operating on him or else he’ll kill her family. Mom airs Mondays at 9:30 on CBS, with Hostages following at 10:00. The Crazy Ones, meanwhile, will air its series premiere Thursday, September 26th at 9:00 following the one-hour season premiere of The Big Bang Theory.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Marc Blucas has signed on to appear in one episode of the family cop drama as a movie star who goes for a ride-along with Danny to research for a role. However, his secret life gets exposed and he has to cut a deal to help with a case in exchange for Danny’s silence. (Huffington Post)

John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff on long-running NBC comedy Cheers, is set to appear in the second episode of Bones‘s ninth season as Bill Schumacher, a man at a couples retreat with his wife Ethel. (Entertainment Weekly)

Defiance
James Murray (Primeval) is set to appear as a regular on the next season of the Syfy hit as Niles Pottinger, the shrewd new mayor of Defiance who was appointed by the Earth Republic. Pottinger is described as polished, charming, ruthless, and pragmatic. (Deadline)

Drop Dead Diva
90210 alum Trevor Donovan is set to play the “worst best man ever”, as the groom ends up in a Mexican jail under his watch, on the August 11th summer finale of the Lifetime dramedy. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Elementary
Smash alum Jeremy Jordan will appear in an October episode as Joey Castoro, the son of the surgical patient who died in Watson’s care who comes back into Joan’s orbit with an unusual request. Additionally, Lynn Collins (True Blood) is set to appear on the CBS procedural as a math professor who helps Holmes and Watson in a case involving dead mathematicians. (TVLine)

Hart of Dixie
Josh Cooke has landed a recurring role as a New Yorker struggling to adjust to BlueBell. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Hawaii Five-0
In a role with the potential to recur, Tim Daly will play a Texas ranger with a missing daughter in one installment of the series, which relocates to Friday this season. (TVLine)

Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD
David Conrad is the latest to join the secretive drama from ABC in a role with no announced character details. However, due to casting notices, there’s a chance he’ll be playing a brilliant and quirky scientist. (TVLine)

Mom
Justin Long will guest star as the main character’s (played by Anna Faris) first attempt at a romantic relationship following rehab, while Octavia Spencer is set to portray a woman with bigger problems than the main character.  (TVLine)

Nashville
Oliver Hudson is set to play a “charming, audacious, take-no-prisoners businessman” who begins working at Edgehill Records on the second season of the ABC soap. There’s no word on how many episodes he’ll appear in, but the role is said to be recurring. (Vulture)

Open
Anna Torv and Jennifer Jason Leigh have signed on to the Ryan Murphy HBO drama pilot and will play a lesbian couple (a yoga instructor and an actress, respectively) dealing with outside attractions. (Deadline)

Raising Hope
Jeffrey Tambor will portray Arnold, a resident of Natesville who starts popping up in the lives of everybody in the Chance family. He joins Molly Shannon in guest starring on the comedy, heading into its fourth season this fall. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Saint George
Danny Trejo has been cast in the upcoming FX comedy as the uncle of the main character (played by George Lopez), a construction worker who serves as a drinking buddy and mirror for those around him. Additionally, the series has added Jenn Lyon and Kaden Gibson as the main character’s ex-wife and 11-year-old son, respectively. (The Hollywood Reporter; Deadline)

Sherlock
Lars Mikkelsen will play Charles Augustus Magnussen, the newest villain on the BBC/PBS crime drama. No character details have been released as of yet. (Vulture)

-At their TCA session, NBC revealed that reality-competition series Fashion Star has been canceled after two seasons, while Celebrity Apprentice is currently casting (but hasn”t been renewed as of yet) and canceled Anne Heche comedy Save Me shot 13 episodes, seven of which won”t air. In addition, pilots Wonderland and The Donor Party are said to be on hold, The Gilded Age (from Downton Abbey“s Julian Fellowes) is alive, and Dick Wolf”s Girlfriend in a Coma is in negotiations with David Frankel to executive produce and direct.

-NBC also gave a peek into their miniseries development cycle. Aside from A.D., After the Bible, which will premiere during the 2014-2015 season, the network has projects in the works based on Cleopatra, Hillary Clinton, Rosemary”s Baby, Stephen King”s Tommyknockers, and the Pilgrims” journey to Plymouth.

-Syfy has greenlit Dominion, based on 2007 fantasy/horror film Legion, to pilot. Scott Stewart, who co-wrote and directed Legion, is back to direct the pilot, which is set 25 years in the future after a war between an army of angels and mankind.

-Casting news: Jurnee Smollett has joined the fifth season of Parenthood, where she”ll be playing Kristina”s political campaign manager Heather in a major recurring role; Sam Elliott Ron Swanson”s Eagletonian doppleganger on an upcoming episode of Parks and Recreation, the same one that will feature Kristen Bell as Eagleton”s Leslie Knope; American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy announced that Denis O”Hare will be appearing on the show”s third season, though no details about his role were disclosed; in addition to recurring on HBO”s upcoming medical comedy Getting On, Emmy nominee Molly Shannon is set to recur on Raising Hope as the new owner of Howdy”s, beginning with the fourth episode of the season; ER vet Parminder Nagra has joined NBC”s The Blacklist and a mentor to one of the female FBI agents; Heidi Klum and Henry Winkler will be stopping by Parks and Recreation next season, playing the mayor of a small Danish town and Jean-Ralphio”s father, respectively; Rome“s Indira Varma to play Ellaria Sand on the fourth season of Game of Thrones, premiering next spring; Steve Cabral is the latest to join ABC Family”s Ravenswood and Raymond Collins.

-The Hub has announced their first Halloween bash, set to air October 26th. The event will celebrate the best of  Halloween, including the first-ever nationwide costume competition with one  finalist being chosen from every state in America. Details are set to be released in August.

–Please Like Me, a scripted comedy from Australian comic Josh Thomas, has been renewed for a second season by Pivot. The series, which debuts August 1st, stars Thomas as 20-year-old Josh, whose life becomes in disarray when he”s broken up with by his girlfriend, realizes he might be gay, and moves in with his suicidal mother. -The ESPN 30 for 30 series of documentaries will add six new entries this fall: October 1st – Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau (centering on big wave surfer Eddie Aikau); October 8th – Free Spirits (a look at former ABA franchise Spirits of St. Louis); October 15th – No Mas (analyzing the infamous boxing match between Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard); October 22nd – Big Shot (about the 1996 New York Islanders); October 29th – This is What They Want (following the improbable run of tennis great Jimmy Connors at the 1991 U.S. Open); and November 5th – Tonya and Nancy (chronicling the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics).

-Key art for four CBS fall series has been released. Included are Robin Williams comedy The Crazy Ones; Chuck Lorre-created Mom; family comedy The Millers; and We Are Men, which will air Mondays at 8:30. Art for the network”s lone new fall drama Hostages was also recently released.
