“Atlantis is off to a fantastic start and is the centerpiece of our Saturday nights for the next twelve weeks. We’re committed to bringing our viewers even more entertaining episodes inspired by Greek mythology from Howard and the talented team in season two,” said Richard De Croce, SVP Programming, BBC America.

Atlantis tells the story of young warrior Jason, who washes up on the shores of a land he doesn’t know. What he witnesses when he comes to and begins to explore his surroundings are bull leaping, snake haired goddesses, and halls seemingly built by giants; though he finds friends in the form of Hercules and Pythagoras, Jason still has to battle some of the most famous names in Greek legend and try to find his way back to the place he once called home. The series stars Jack Donnelly (Dancing on the Edge), Mark Addy (Game of Thrones), Robert Emms (War Horse), Jemima Rooper (Kinky Boots), and Aiysha Hart (Djinn).

Atlantis airs Saturdays at 9:00 on BBC America. You can check out a preview for the second episode, where the boys try to find an old man’s missing daughter in order to fill their pockets with coin, below.

From the trailer, the show looks like a reverse Sinbad; where the 2012 sea-faring drama found our hero leaping onto the nearest boat and traveling throughout the world, a world he never would have seen without said leap, golden-toned Atlantis has the main character arriving in a new town to begin with. The two shows also share a similar look and broad, family-friendly tone that marks a decided change for BBC America, which has previously opted for darker period fare and the odd burst of science fiction (Orphan Black, Doctor Who). It could end up being the right type of change, though, a fairly inexpensive way to expand their programming and show the creative community that the definition of what a BBC America show looks like isn’t as narrow as it once was. The first trailer for Atlantis also brings to mind Starz’s Da Vinci’s Demons, a series that found something of a foothold on cable while looking readymade for a syndication-first or broadcast run, so it wouldn’t be unprecedented for Atlantis to garner the attention needed for a second season and further collaborations between BBC and BBC America.

In addition to Donnelly, Atlantis will star Mark Addy (Game of Thrones) as Hercules; Jemima Rooper (As If) as Medusa; Juliet Stevenson (Bend It Like Beckham) as the Oracle; Sarah Parish (The Holiday) as Pasiphae; and Robert Emms (War Horse) as Pythagoras.

The series premiere of Atlantis is set to air Saturday, November 23rd at 10:00 on BBC America.

November 23rd will see the series premiere of Howard Overman’s fantasy actioner Atlantis, as well as the 50th anniversary special for Doctor Who; original movie An Adventure in Space and Time is also scheduled to premiere that month. The eight-episode second season of period drama Ripper Street, meanwhile, is set for Sunday, December 1st. That series stars Matthew Macfayden as DI Edmund Reid, one of the men in charge of going after infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper.

2014 brings the premiere of four-part series Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond in January and the second season of cult favorite Orphan Black in April. Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan will return sometime this spring, while the second season of zombie drama In the Flesh should see the light of day in the same time frame, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet. The three-part first season of In the Flesh aired earlier this summer on BBC America after a winter premiere in the UK.

The network is said to be eyeing the launch of five to six original scripted projects, all with orders of 8-10 episodes rather than a typical 13, and one four-hour miniseries for 2014. Their next series, thriller Helix, premieres in January.

Elsewhere in the world of genre television, BBC has announced that they”ll be co-producing a fantasy drama called Atlantis with the intent of airing it during their Supernatural Saturdays programming block this fall. From Howard Overman (Misfits), Julian Murphy (Merlin), and Johnny Capps (Merlin), the series is said to reimagine Greek myths and legends in a story where young Jason arrives to the famed city, home of bull leaping, snake haired goddesses, and giant palaces. The cast is set to include Mark Addy (Game of Thrones), Jemima Rooper (One Man), Juliet  Stevenson (The Hour), Sarah Parish (Hatfields & McCoys), and Jack Donnelly (Dancing On The Edge).

“Atlantis is the perfect  series for our long-running successful Supernatural Saturday programming block. An incredible creative team and exciting cast are in place to deliver ambitious adventures this fall,” said Richard De Croce, Senior Vice President of Programming at BBC America.

BBC America had success earlier this year in the genre game with Orphan Black, which earned its star Tatiana Maslany a Critics” Choice Award and a second season, set to debut in April 2014. The series was released on DVD and Blu-ray earlier this month.
