It’s finally official – Enlisted will not be returning to the Fox lineup.

The network has confirmed the cancellation of the cult-favorite comedy, a move long seen coming – unfortunately – by many.  The Friday night laugher grew a loyal audience of fans who have been anxiously awaiting for the show to be given a second chance – and decent time slot.  Sadly, it won’t be happening.

Fox has also cancelled Seth MacFarlane’s Dads.  Slightly surprising, as despite poor critical reception the show has been seen as likely to be renewed by the net that has stood by the show since its all-around offensive pilot episode.

Also cancelled is Surviving Jack, single-camera sitcom based on author Justin Halpern’s autobiographical book, “I Suck at Girls”, starring Christopher Meloni.

These cancellations leave Brooklyn Nine-Nine as Fox’s only surviving freshman comedy this season.

The Hollywood Reporter is also reporting that Fox has pulled the plug on Greg Kinnear-starrer Rake.

The other change comes on Mondays, where Sleepy Hollow will now be having a two-hour season finale on Monday, January 20th. Originally, the show was scheduled to end its season at 8:00 on the same night and lead into the second episode of The Following‘s second season. Instead, the two shows will not be airing together this season, as The Following will now have its season premiere after the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, January 19th as expected and follow that up with its second episode on Monday, January 27th at 9:00.

Not airing the second episode of The Following the day after the season premiere seems like a counterproductive move on FOX’s part. While Almost Human‘s ratings tumble last month when the same strategy was employed could have caused them to have cold feet, it seems pointless to have a special airing behind what will be one of the highest rated broadcasts of your season and not try to capitalize on that momentum. Ratings will of course go down from the first airing to the second anyway, but The Following had a season to establish a fan base and became one of FOX’s top scripted shows as a result; it doesn’t face the same danger of collapsing that Almost Human did and likely would have had a mutually beneficial partnership with Sleepy Hollow. which would have helped make up some of the slippage that it would have suffered. This way, though, any positive impact that could have been felt from the NFL exposure will be gone by the time the second episode airs.

The biggest changes come for the network’s Tuesday nights, as The Mindy Project and Dads will be put on hiatus beginning January 28th and February 11th, respectively. On February 4th, Brooklyn Nine-Nine moves to 9:30 to air behind New Girl, where it will stay until its late March finale. Mindy will then return to its slot on April 1st and finish out the season there, with Glee moving to the night on February 25th at 8:00. There’s been no return date set for Dads as of yet.

All the moves that FOX made today carry a certain amount of sense to them – Glee was floundering on Thursdays and has a guaranteed sixth season, so it needed to be moved and could prove to be a good match for New Girl; The Following is their biggest drama right now and giving it the NFL boost will not only help their affiliates, it’ll fight against a sophomore ratings slump; though the network brass love The Mindy Project, and it has a small but loyal fanbase, it hit a series low this past week and doesn’t seem to be benefitting from its time slot; despite its full season order, Dads has been an albatross around the neck of the network and this seems to be a way to guide it to cancellation without having to rescind the 22-episode order. However, the changes will just end up being confusing to the casual viewer with all the show shuffling and FOX has shown itself to be unsure of itself at this point in the season, making that abundantly clear by how quickly they offered a revised version of the schedule they unveiled earlier this fall.

With the annual winter TCA press sessions only a couple of months away, don’t be surprised if more moves are made, in addition to the scheduled announcements of premiere dates for 24, Gang Related, and Wayward Pines.

“FOX has been looking to break into the multi-camera format for some time,” said FOX Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly. “With Dads, we have an asset that we can grow, and we’re looking forward to seeing where the fantastic cast and the creative minds of Seth, Alec, Mike and Wellesley take us the rest of the season.”

The move is the latest in FOX’s bid to position itself for midseason, as they also announced a series of midseason premiere dates today. Among them was the news that Enlisted will indeed be airing on Fridays and that Surviving Jack had its episode order cut for scheduling reasons. The latter will be debuting later this season when American Idol‘s results show gets cut down to 30 minutes, while the lone remaining comedy (Us & Them) was effectively canceled earlier this month.

Starring Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi, Dads follows two successful video game developers whose lives are turned upside down when their fathers move in with them. The show also features Martin Mull, Peter Riegert, Vanessa Lachey, Brenda Song, and Tonita Castro.

Dads airs Tuesdays at 8:00 on FOX.

It’s a similar fate that befell last season’s The Goodwin Games, which ended up being burned off this past May, so the series has essentially been cancelled before airing an episode, the second FOX series to suffer that fate this week following Murder Police. Of course, FOX will likely air the entirety of Us & Them at a date, but the fact remains that they’re now down two of the comedies that they ordered at upfronts.

Helping matters is that they’ve picked up midseason entry Mulaney for six episodes and have ordered additional scripts for Dads and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, despite the latter two being fairly lethargic in the ratings the past several weeks. FOX also still has Surviving Jack, starring Christopher Meloni as a tough father raising children in the 90s, and Enlisted, a military brother comedy that was originally slated to premiere next month but was delayed until January.

The move might be the saving grace for The Mindy Project, as it leaves the sophomore comedy as the most compatible comedy to follow New Girl and the lone female-centric comedy apart from the Tuesday bloc centerpiece. Us & Them looked as if it could replace The Mindy Project. which has been struggling in the ratings, sometime this season, but without its biggest threat lurking in the shadows, Mindy should be able to air its complete season. However, its fate for next season is still up in the air and will depend both on how the new comedies fare and what type of voice FOX focuses on in its comedy development for 2014-2015.

The pilot of Seth MacFarlane’s new comedy is reportedly highlighted with racist humor, though MANAA’s main issue is with the treatment of Brenda Song’s character, Veronica.  She dresses “like a sexy Asian school girl” to impress Chinese businessmen.  The group also raised concerns over dialoge between the Dads leads and the aforementioned businessmen, claiming that it only served to exaggerate stereotypes.

FOX chairman Kevin Reilly and chief operating officer Joe Early stated in a letter to MANAA that their “perspective on programming is always important to us, especially given our ongoing efforts to reflect diverse characters and stories on our air.”  The letter continued, “That said, we do recognize comedy is subjective, and we may not be able to please everyone, all the time.”

They did not mention re-shooting the pilot.

Song’s character was described by the network executives as “a strong, intelligent, empowered young woman who basically runs the company…” Song herself said that she has no problem with the character during the network’s summer TCA tour.

This is not the first example of programming being found offensive, and certainly won’t be the last.  Dads stars Seth Green and Giovani Ribisi, and will premiere on FOX Tuesday, September 17^th.
