It’s not exactly a surprise that Low Winter Sun was dealt a cancellation blow, as the drama bled quite a bit of audience from the final season of Breaking Bad and was decisively ignored by the critic community that helped buoy the latter until audiences caught on. Whatever tiny shred of possibility that the show would receive a surprise renewal, if only as schedule filler, was dismissed when the network not only renewed western drama Hell on Wheels, it gave the Anson Mount vehicle three extra episodes for its next season.

It’s a time of great upheaval at AMC. While Hell was renewed for a fourth season and The Walking Dead continued to break ratings records in its own fourth season, Breaking Bad concluded its acclaimed run this past September and The Killing was cancelled for a second time, only to be resurrected for a final season on Netflix. With Mad Men on its last legs, heading for the start of its final season this coming spring, AMC has ordered two new dramas to series – Halt & Catch Fire, a period drama that centers on the technology industry and stars Lee Pace; and Turn, based on Alexander Rose’s novel Washington’s Spies. Both are set to make their debuts sometime in 2014.

The series finds millions of students all over the world interacting with Winfrey on-air, online, and via social media as they listen to an expert meant to help them live more fulfilling lives. OWN has also doubled the episode order for Tyler Perry’s Love Thy Neighbor, bringing the comedy up to 52 episodes for its first season, and while ordering four more installments of Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots and moving Tyler Perry’s For Better or Worse over from TBS beginning Wednesday, September 18th at 9:00.

–True Blood star Stephen Moyer has signed on to star in NBC’s production of The Sound of Music as Captain Georg Van Trapp. The three-hour live event, also starring country music star Carrie Underwood, is set to air December 5th.

-ABC Family has ordered three comedy pilots: Mystery Girls, starring Tori Spelling as a former TV star forced to solve crimes with her mystery TV series co-star; Work Mom, which follows digital marketer Heather as she gets a promotion and hires her mother; and Young & Hungry, about a tech entrepreneur who hires a food blogger as his personal chef. A decision about whether any of these will be picked up to series and join the network’s comedy roster, which includes Baby Daddy and Melissa & Joey, will come early next year.

-Kendrick Lamar leads the way with 14 nominations at the BET Hip Hop Awards, which will air October 15th and be hosted by Snoop Dogg. Other major nominees, which you can see here, include J. Cole, Drake, and Wale.

-Comedian Dave Attell has landed a weekly late-night stand-up series. Yet to be titled, the eight-episode first season will feature comedians performing uncensored and unfiltered sets, with new faces mixed in with familiar favorites. He previously had travelogue Insomniac with Dave Attell on the network, which ran from 2001-2004 and inspired several one-hour specials during its run.

-History has greenlit production on a scripted miniseries based on famed magician Harry Houdini. Starring Adrien Brody and Kristen Connolly, Houdini follows the man as he “finds fame, engages in espionage, battles spiritualists and encounters the greatest names of the era, from U.S. presidents to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Grigori Rasputin.”

-Upcoming ABC Family drama Ravenswood will be given a special new promo during the summer finale of Pretty Little Liars, airing Tuesday. Also, the network will initiate the #RavenswoodReveal challenge, as star Tyler Blackburn will tweet a portion of a photo that holds clues to the series. Once it reaches 1022 retweets, in honors of the show’s October premiere date, one of his four co-stars (Nicole Gale Anderson, Brett Dier, Britne Oldford, and Merritt Patterson) will tweet another part of the photo, looking for 1022 retweets, and so on.

-Syfy has put a new reality series from the producers of Face Off into development. Camera Ready will put ten aspiring costume designers through challenges in creating wardrobe for television, film, and music videos. They’ll be evaluated by Oscar-winning costume designers, cutting-edge directors, and avant-garde fashionistas, with the winner taking home $100,000.

-On September 7th at 9:00, Animal Planet will be holding a countdown of the Top 20 Kitten Moments, with regular interruptions scheduled for glimpses at the Animal Planet L!VE’s Kitten Cam. If you can’t wait, the network has set up an exclusive live stream of the second annual Walker Art Center Internet Cat Video Film Festival, set to begin August 28th at 8:30 p.m. on AnimalPlanet.com/CatVidFest. A butter sculpture of a cat will also be revealed during the hour.

-The CW has set its summer finale dates, as well as ordered one-hour special Colin & Brad: Two Man Group (with Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood) and a one-hour Arrow recap special titled Year One. The schedule is as follows:

–Renewals: NBC has ordered a 10-episode second season of Hollywood Game Night, while TBS has renewed Men at Work for a 10-episode third season, Sullivan & Son for a 13-episode third season, and Deal with It for a 10-episode second season. Deon Cole’s Black Box remains the only TBS original with its fate up in the air.

In Owner’s Manual, hosts Ed Sanders (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) and Marcus Hunt (Hammer Heads) tackle weekly challenges related to machinery and technology. The catch? One man will try to operate their latest obstacle using only the instruction manual, while the other will go strictly by his instincts. The first episode finds the duo attempting to fly a stunt plane over the Pacific Ocean, with later episodes centered on locomotives, off-road vehicles, and a Hawaiian brewery.

Low Winter Sun tells the story of Detroit detectives Frank (Mark Strong) and Joe (Lennie James), who team up to kill one of their colleagues. However, despite their experience in the field and knowledge of how murders are solved and what cops look for at crime scenes, it doesn’t go as easily as they thought and soon, the two are at each other’s throats over what they did. Will Frank and Joe be able to keep their cool and avoid blowing their covers to their fellow officers? Or will the guilt plaguing Frank and Joe’s carelessness eventually catch someone’s attention and cause the two to be brought in for the murder? In addition to Strong and James, Low Winter Sun stars the likes of James Ransone (The Wire), David Costabile (Lincoln), Sprague Grayden (Jericho), Athena Karkanis (Saw IV), and Ruben Santiago-Hudson (American Gangster).

Owner’s Manual airs Thursdays at 10:30 on AMC, while Low Winter Sun airs Sundays at 10:00 following Breaking Bad. The latter aired its second episode last night, which saw ratings take a tumble and its fate get less secure than it was after a modest debut.

Based on the British miniseries of the same name, Low Winter Sun finds the two detectives taking a corrupt co-worker, who Joe knows murdered someone, and drowning him in the back of a restaurant. It should be the perfect crime – they know their department’s strengths and weaknesses, in addition to how they investigate crimes of this nature and what the best way to cover their tracks would be. It might even be the perfect crime if Frank can keep the guilt of what happened under wraps, especially since he had to be inebriated and receive a last second reminder of why his colleague deserved to die in the eyes of Joe. Frank has built a career on being the prototypical “good cop”, so will he be able to stop himself from incriminating himself and Joe for what they did? Is there a chance that the two get away with this after all?

In addition to Strong and James, Low Winter Sun stars Ruben Santiago-Hudson (American Gangster), Athena Karkanis (Saw IV), David Costabile (Lincoln), James Ransone (Inside Man), Erika Alexander (Living Single), and Sprague Grayden (Paranormal Activity 2).

-At their TCA session, NBC revealed that reality-competition series Fashion Star has been canceled after two seasons, while Celebrity Apprentice is currently casting (but hasn”t been renewed as of yet) and canceled Anne Heche comedy Save Me shot 13 episodes, seven of which won”t air. In addition, pilots Wonderland and The Donor Party are said to be on hold, The Gilded Age (from Downton Abbey“s Julian Fellowes) is alive, and Dick Wolf”s Girlfriend in a Coma is in negotiations with David Frankel to executive produce and direct.

-NBC also gave a peek into their miniseries development cycle. Aside from A.D., After the Bible, which will premiere during the 2014-2015 season, the network has projects in the works based on Cleopatra, Hillary Clinton, Rosemary”s Baby, Stephen King”s Tommyknockers, and the Pilgrims” journey to Plymouth.

-Syfy has greenlit Dominion, based on 2007 fantasy/horror film Legion, to pilot. Scott Stewart, who co-wrote and directed Legion, is back to direct the pilot, which is set 25 years in the future after a war between an army of angels and mankind.

-Casting news: Jurnee Smollett has joined the fifth season of Parenthood, where she”ll be playing Kristina”s political campaign manager Heather in a major recurring role; Sam Elliott Ron Swanson”s Eagletonian doppleganger on an upcoming episode of Parks and Recreation, the same one that will feature Kristen Bell as Eagleton”s Leslie Knope; American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy announced that Denis O”Hare will be appearing on the show”s third season, though no details about his role were disclosed; in addition to recurring on HBO”s upcoming medical comedy Getting On, Emmy nominee Molly Shannon is set to recur on Raising Hope as the new owner of Howdy”s, beginning with the fourth episode of the season; ER vet Parminder Nagra has joined NBC”s The Blacklist and a mentor to one of the female FBI agents; Heidi Klum and Henry Winkler will be stopping by Parks and Recreation next season, playing the mayor of a small Danish town and Jean-Ralphio”s father, respectively; Rome“s Indira Varma to play Ellaria Sand on the fourth season of Game of Thrones, premiering next spring; Steve Cabral is the latest to join ABC Family”s Ravenswood and Raymond Collins.

-The Hub has announced their first Halloween bash, set to air October 26th. The event will celebrate the best of  Halloween, including the first-ever nationwide costume competition with one  finalist being chosen from every state in America. Details are set to be released in August.

–Please Like Me, a scripted comedy from Australian comic Josh Thomas, has been renewed for a second season by Pivot. The series, which debuts August 1st, stars Thomas as 20-year-old Josh, whose life becomes in disarray when he”s broken up with by his girlfriend, realizes he might be gay, and moves in with his suicidal mother. -The ESPN 30 for 30 series of documentaries will add six new entries this fall: October 1st – Hawaiian: The Legend of Eddie Aikau (centering on big wave surfer Eddie Aikau); October 8th – Free Spirits (a look at former ABA franchise Spirits of St. Louis); October 15th – No Mas (analyzing the infamous boxing match between Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard); October 22nd – Big Shot (about the 1996 New York Islanders); October 29th – This is What They Want (following the improbable run of tennis great Jimmy Connors at the 1991 U.S. Open); and November 5th – Tonya and Nancy (chronicling the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics).

-Key art for four CBS fall series has been released. Included are Robin Williams comedy The Crazy Ones; Chuck Lorre-created Mom; family comedy The Millers; and We Are Men, which will air Mondays at 8:30. Art for the network”s lone new fall drama Hostages was also recently released. Once the most standup guy in the pool of Detroit homicide detectives, Frank has now killed one of his own and his entire life beyond this point will be different. His priorities at work will no longer be acquiring justice and being an effective servant of the public; the focus has turned to keeping himself and his colleague from being on the wrong side of the law and making sure that they both keep the freedom that they currently enjoy. But how long can Frank feasibly keep up this front, especially if he and Joe begin turning on one another? Joe has the complete opposite reputation from Frank – plays by his own rule, surly, self-interested – and that’s fine for when they only have to work together briefly, but when they’re forever intertwined like this, something is bound to implode.

In addition to James and Strong, Low Winter Sun stars Ruben Santiago-Hudson (American Gangster) as ambitious Lt. George Torrance, Athena Karkanis (Saw IV) as Frank’s partner Dani Khalil, and David Costabile (Lincoln) as Internal Affairs agent David Westwood. The cast also includes James Ransone (Inside Man), Erika Alexander (Living Single), and Sprague Grayden (Paranormal Activity 2).

-Disney Channel has ordered comedy I Didn’t Do It to series. Starring Olivia Holt and Austin North, the show follows fraternal twins who have to navigate the horrors of their freshman year of high school along with four best friends. I Didn’t Do It also features Piper Curda, Sarah Gilman, and Peyton Clark.

-Lifetime’s The Client List wrapped its second season on June 16th and is currently in limbo as to its future on the network. While ratings are down, the reason for the delay is a difference of opinion regarding how the show would handle Jennifer Love Hewitt’s pregnancy. Creator, executive producer, and star Hewitt is three months pregnant with co-star Brian Hallisay’s baby and she wants the show to write his character Kyle to be the father of her character Riley’s child. However, Lifetime is said to prefer Colin Egglesfield’s character Evan to be the father and the two are currently at an impasse.

-This summer’s edition of Big Brother will have two major twists, as three houseguests will be up for elimination rather than two and viewers will play a bigger role in the game with the introduction of the MVP vote. Each week, the audience casts votes for the player they feel is playing the best game, which gives them secret power that will be revealed in the June 26th season premiere.

-Liv Tyler has joined the cast of HBO’s The Leftovers, based on the Tom Perrotta novel of the same name and created by Lost‘s Damon Lindelof. Tyler, who has yet to appear on series television, joins previously cast Justin Theroux and Michael Gaston and will play Meg, a young woman on the verge of getting married but needing an escape.

-Due to the impending release of Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, E! has announced a Pretty Wild marathon of episodes that focus on the alleged involvement of Alexis Neiers in a string of celebrity robberies. The four-episode marathon begins Friday, June 21st at 1:00.

1:00 PM: “The Arrest” 
Emerging as Hollywood’s newest stars, sisters Tess, Alexis and Gabby are  ready to take the City of Angels by storm.  In the season premiere of Pretty Wild, sexy sisters Tess and Alexis land a huge modeling gig, but a knock on  their door early one morning will change the life of one sister forever.

1:30PM: “The Hearing” 
With her freedom on the line at a preliminary hearing, Alexis faces charges  of allegedly committing a burglary targeting celebrity homes. Meanwhile, Tess is  ecstatic when she is invited on a date with a pop superstar and Gabby’s world is  rocked when Andrea announces that the whole family is making a big move.

2:00 PM: “Vanity Unfair” 
Alexis gets the opportunity to finally tell her side of the story in an  interview in Vanity Fair, but the article doesn’t quite turn out the way she  expected.  At Andrea’s suggestion, Gabby goes job hunting and Tess is determined  to find out just where her relationship with rocker Max stands after he didn’t  respond to any of her texts while in Cabo.

2:30PM: “And So It Is” 
Alexis struggles with the stress of her impending trial and finding out  that celebrity superstar, Orlando Bloom will be testifying against her in court.  She begins to unravel as she questions her decision to go to trial or take the  plea deal. The rest of the family tries to cope, but the court case begins to  affect Tess’ relationship with Max.

-There will be new Parks and Recreation merchandise for fans of all things Pawnee to indulge in, as NBC will be unveiling the following additions to the show’s catalog of items: collector’s trading cards, available in June in five-card packs with a second edition set for December; Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson posters and bookmarks, available this summer; Ron Swanson Halloween mask, costume, and talking bobblehead doll, all available in the fourth quarter of the year.

-HBO has released a teaser for True Detectives, its upcoming drama starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey as two detectives whose lives intertwine during a nearly two decade-long hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. No premiere date has been announced yet.

-AMC has released a teaser for Low Winter Sun, its upcoming cop drama starring Lennie James and Mark Strong. The series is set to premiere Sunday, August 11th at 10:00.
