Black Sails Season 2 to Premiere Saturday, January 24th on Starz

Starz has announced that the 10-episode second season of pirate drama Black Sails is set to premiere Saturday, January 24th at 9:00.

Having averaged 5.3 million viewers during its eight-episode first season, Black Sails will pick up its second season with Flint and Silver having had their backs pressed against the wall once the crew of the Walrus found out about their crimes. While the crew must decide whether they intend to go after the Urca or hold their captain accountable for what he’s done, Eleanor will be battling New Low, a blood-thirsty pirate who threatens her position as the head of Nassau. But the entire fabric of the island will be forever altered when its power players learn about a prize that was smuggled onto Nassau’s shores, something that could shift the balance of power and make one of them a very rich individual.

From Jonathan Steinberg (Jericho) and Robert Levine (Touch), Black Sails stars Toby Stephens (Die Another Day), Hannah New (Maleficent), Zach McGowan (Shameless), Luke Arnold (The Tunnel Movie), and Toby Schmitz (Griff the Invisible).

Black Sails joins a 2015 lineup for Starz that includes the second half of Outlander‘s first season, the third season of Da Vinci’s Demons, the second season of Power, and the first seasons of ballet drama Flesh and Bone and Seth MacFarlane comedy Blunt Talk.

Black Sails Marathon to Air Friday, February 14th

Starz will be replaying the first three episodes of pirate drama Black Sails beginning Friday, February 14th at 9:00. Executive produced by Michael Bay, the series follows fearsome Captain Flint as he fights to keep his position as head of a restless crew and John Silver as he tries to sink into the crowd following a questionable incident on another ship. The pirates will also have to defend New Providence Island, the last remaining place they can go about their business without fear of law, from being taken over by the English, a fate that could leave many of them without a home or a place to conduct their business. Thus far, the series has been a ratings winner for Starz, holding nearly all of its audience from week one into week two, and earned itself a second season renewal at 2013 San Diego Comic-Con.

Listed below are the times, titles, and descriptions of the first three episodes of Black Sails.

9:00 p.m. – “I.”
A chronicle of the adventures of pirate Capt. Flint, his mateys, and his rivals in the early 18th-century Caribbean begins with Flint facing a mutiny, while buccaneer cohort John Silver keeps something of great value under wraps.

10:00 p.m. – “II.”
Flint deals with a thief among his crew; Vane voices an objection to Rackham chasing a score; Silver and Max hide in a brothel; and Eleanor is faced with a difficult decision.

11:00 p.m. – “III.”
A partner is sought to assist in the hunt for the Urca d’Lima; Silver comes up with a solution to Billy’s morale issues; a suddenly reasonable Vane makes an impression on Eleanor; and Gates is promoted.

Black Sails Spoilers: Eleanor and Flint Chase the Urca

Now that Eleanor has opted to chase the Urca with Flint over running away to start a new life with Max, there’s a huge target on her back and even more massive weight on her shoulders, as there are other people who would do any and everything they can to locate the Urca before her and Flint. If she manages to find it and get even a small cut of the fortunes that lie within, she would be able to further invest in New Providence and provide a boost to the bustling island that she helped build from the sand up; however, there’s no guarantee that Flint would be willing to part with any of the money or that he will be able to survive the hunt for the Urca, even with the time he bought upon murdering Singleton, since he’ll soon become an even bigger target than Eleanor. Is Eleanor heading for disappointment in dedicating the foreseeable future to finding the Urca?

Listed below are the dates, titles, and descriptions of the next six episodes of Black Sails.

Starz has made the first episode of upcoming pirate drama Black Sails available for viewing on its Youtube channel one week ahead of its television premiere.

Said to combine a more grounded look at the golden age of pirates with fictional characters from Robert Louis Stevenson classic Treasure Island, Black Sails tells the story of fearsome Captain Flint (Toby Stephens), who takes on an addition to his crew in young John Silver (Luke Arnold) at the same time that New Providence Island, a pirate criminal haven, has come under siege. There are very few places where a pirate could be a pirate anymore at that period in time and Flint would be damned if he let go of New Providence, one of the last places untouched by English rule, without a fight. But is he going to be able to combat all those who seek to take control of the island? How much loss is he willing to suffer in order to keep the island to himself?

In addition to Stephens and Arnold, Black Sails stars Jessica Parker Kennedy (The Secret Circle) as resourceful New Providence prostitute Max; Zach McGowan (Shameless) as Captain Vane, the principal rival to Captain Flint; Clara Paget (Fast & Furious 6) as infamous female pirate Anne Bonny; Hannah New (ReVersion) as entrepreneurial Eleanor Guthrie; and Toby Schmitz (Griff the Invisible) as Anne’s lover and crewmate Rackham.

Black Sails Trailer: Looking for Peace Away from the Sea

Starz has released a new trailer for upcoming pirate drama Black Sails, a series said to mix literary characters from Treasure Island and prominent historical figures. Set two decades before the events in the Robert Louis Stevenson novel, Black Sails tells the story of feared pirate Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and the battle for control of New Providence Island. A criminal mecca that is one of the last places yet to be touched by English rule, New Providence is where a pirate can be a pirate and where anything (and everything) goes, but Flint and his men, including new addition John Silver (Luke Arnold), will have to defend it from impending threat with all their might.

In addition to Stephens and Arnold, Black Sails stars Mark Ryan (The Prestige) as Quartermaster Gates, an intermediary between Flint and the rest of the crew; Tom Hopper (Merlin) as Billy Bones, a trustworthy crew member; Hannah New (The Boat) as ambitious Eleanor Guthrie, the most powerful person on New Providence; Jessica Parker Kennedy (The Secret Circle) as Max, a prostitute who works on New Providence and who has had to take care of herself from a young age; and Zach McGowan (Shameless) as Captain Charles Vane, Flint’s most dangerous rival.

The series premiere of Black Sails is set to air Saturday, January 25th at 9:00 on Starz. Now that the winter television hiatus is nearing its end, it’s time to shake the cobwebs from the recent slate of holiday programming off our collective heads and prepare for what promises to be a busy midseason. With more networks delving into scripted programming than ever before, there are going to be quite a few options for ever the most discerning of viewers, so to help cut through the clutter and find the best that midseason 2014 has to offer, TVHackr has keyed in on 10 new series that have the potential to become strong staples for their networks. Whether it be a strong cast, promising concept, or intriguing enough trailer, these shows have something that caught our eye and made us want to see more.

Only included in the list, sorted in alphabetical order, are shows that will be making their series premiere in the coming months, whereas last year’s list was a mix of returnees and rookies. A list of midseason premiere and return dates can be found here.

Bitten (January 13th, Syfy)
Who’s in it: Laura Vandervoort, Greyston Holt, Greg Bryk, Paul Greene, and Steve Lund
What’s it about: The only female werewolf in existence and the ties that bind her to her pack.
Why?: The latest Canadian import for Syfy, Bitten looks to follow the lead of Lost Girl in spotlighting a sexy, butt-kicking heroine dealing with a major identity crisis.

Black Sails (January 25th, Starz)
Who’s in it: Toby Stephens, Luke Arnold, Zach McGowan, Jessica Parker Kennedy, and Hannah New
What’s it about: Decades before Treasure Island, Captain Flint fights for the survival of a criminal haven.
Why?: Executive produced by Michael Bay and said to be a mix of literary characters with real life figures, Black Sails could be the splashy, audience-pleasing hit that Starz is looking for.

What’s it about: Three brothers living and working together on a Florida army base.

Why?: Helix promises a claustrophobic atmosphere that capitalizes on a premise not out of the realm of real life possibility.

Looking (January 19th, HBO)
Who’s in it: Jonathan Groff, Murray Bartlett, Frankie J. Alvarez, Scott Bakula, and Russell Tovey
What’s it about: Three friends living and loving in San Francisco.
Why?: Coming on the heels of increased support for same-sex marriage, the Andrew Haigh-directed dramedy is the first predominately LGBT series since the days of Queer as Folk, Noah’s Arc, and The L Word.

Mixology (February 26th, ABC)

What’s it about: Six women and five men try to find love over the course of one night.
Why?: The intriguingly structured premise and cast of unknowns/potential breakouts make Mixology something that could flourish as it goes along.

Penny Dreadful (April, Showtime)
Who’s in it: Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Billie Piper, Timothy Dalton, and Helen McCrory
What’s it about: Classic horror characters grapple with alienation in Victorian London.
Why?: Showtime goes to the horror well by humanizing the things that go bump in the night and exploring what it’s like to live in a world where you don’t feel you belong.

Resurrection (March 9th, ABC)
Who’s in it: Omar Epps, Kurtwood Smith, Devin Kelley, Frances Fisher, and Samaire Armstrong
What’s it about: A small town is shaken to its core when former residents return from the dead, unaged since and unaware of their deaths.
Why?: Though its premise is eerily similar to Sundance’s The Returned, this ABC drama offers a slightly less creepy, slightly more hopeful version of events.

Star-Crossed (February 17th, The CW)
Who’s in it: Aimee Teegarden, Matt Lanter, Malese Jow, Grey Damon, and Titus Makin Jr.
What’s it about: A group of aliens get assimilated into a high school and a romance develops between an alien boy and human girl.
Why?: Best described as Roswell with an allegorical tinge, the show will rely heavily on the chemistry between the leads and the depth behind its set pieces.

The Red Road (February, Sundance)
Who’s in it: Martin Henderson, Julianne Nicholson, Jason Momoa, Allie Gonino, and Tom Sizemore
What’s it about: A sheriff finds himself partnering with a local Indian tribe as a way of covering up a crime committed by his wife.
Why?: Sundance went on an impressive hot streak with its 2013 scripted programming that The Red Road, with its unusual premise and intimate setting, looks to continue.

Starz has released a nine-minute inside look at upcoming drama Black Sails, which will blend historical figures and literary characters from Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. In the promotional video, the history behind the pirate myth is discussed, including how the series will adhere more to the darker reality of the world in which figures like this lived than the Hollywood makeover they’ve received, as well as the main characters we’ll be following throughout the eight-episode first season. Also brought up is the vast scale of the show’s South African production, including the authenticity of the weaponry and fight training that the actors had to undergo before filming.

Set in 1715, Black Sails tells the story of the Golden Age of piracy through the eyes and experiences of fearsome Captain Flint (Toby Stephens), a man charged with protecting the sanctity of criminal haven New Providence Island. The last place that hasn’t been touched by English rule, New Providence is the only area where a pirate can be a pirate and where their lifestyle is celebrated rather than looked down upon, but after the falling out with the English, rights to the land and all the financial opportunities it presents are up for grabs.

In addition to Stephens, Black Sails will star Mark Ryan as Quartermaster Gates, an intermediary between Flint and the rest of the crew; Tom Hopper as Billy Bones, a trustworthy crew member; Hannah New as ambitious Eleanor Guthrie, the most powerful person on New Providence; and Zach McGowan as Captain Charles Vane, Flint’s most dangerous rival.

Black Sails: Get a First Look at the Upcoming Starz Pirate Drama

Starz has released a behind the scenes look at upcoming pirate drama Black Sails, as well as a series of character introductory videos. Executive produced by Michael Bay and set in Nassau, Bahamas, the series takes place 25 years before the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and centers on Captain Flint (Toby Stephens), the most feared pirate sailing the open seas. He takes on a new addition to his crew in John Silver (Luke Arnold), which comes in handy because the pirate control over currently unregulated New Providence Island, one of the only places not under colonial rule, has been threatened. In order to preserve the criminal haven that they’ve grown to love so much, Flint is going to have to strengthen his ranks and hope that his men are strong and savvy enough to keep New Providence from falling into the wrong hands.

In addition to Stephens and Arnold, Black Sails stars Zach McGowan (Shameless) as Flint’s rival Captain Vane; Hannah New (Maleficent) as Eleanor Guthrie, in charge of the smuggling operation at New Providence; Jessica Parker Kennedy (The Secret Circle) as Max, a prostitute who gets exposed to the darker parts of the island; Clara Paget (Fast and Furious 6) as beautiful but cold-blooded Anne Bonny; and Tom Hopper (Merlin) as Billy Bones, boatswain of Flint’s ship.

The series premiere of Black Sails is set to air Saturday, January 25th at 9:00 on Starz. The show has already been renewed for a second season, which will consist of 10 episodes and premiere sometime in 2015, due to strong reception at a San Diego Comic-Con screening.

Black Sails to Premiere Saturday, January 25th on Starz

The eight-episode first season of pirate drama Black Sails is set to set sail Saturday, January 25th at 9:00 on Starz, the network announced today. Executive produced by Michael Bay, the series takes place twenty years prior to the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and will follow Captain Flint (Toby Stephen) as he takes aboard a new addition to his crew in the form of John Silver (Luke Arnold). He’ll need all the help he can get to hang on to prized New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day and a place where a pirate can be a pirate; the id-friendly locale has come under siege and is in danger of losing what makes it special to the crew of pirates that currently occupy it.

Most interesting about the premiere date release is that the network is opting to keep original programming on Saturdays, not exactly known for its hospitality to scripted originals. But after the success of The White Queen earlier this year, as well as the difficulty in getting a foothold on Fridays (i.e. the two-and-outs of Boss and Magic City), Starz decided to go another way in hopes of making a play for scripted success in 2014. It remains to be seen if other originals in the pipeline for this year, including the second season of Da Vinci’s Demons and literary adaptation Outlander, will be airing on Saturdays, however.

In addition to Stephens and Arnold , Black Sails stars Zack McGowan (Shameless) as Captain Charles Vance, Captain Flint’s rival; Hannah New (Maleficent) as Eleanor Guthrie, a beautiful and determined young woman who runs the smuggling operation on New Providence; Jessica Parker Kennedy (The Secret Circle) as Max, a tortured young prostitute who sees the dark side of New Providence; and Clara Paget (Fast and Furious 6) as beautiful but cold-blooded Anne Bonny.

Black Sails was renewed for a 10-episode second season this past summer. You can check out a trailer for the series here, as well as the show’s panel at New York Comic-Con here.
