It’s a bit disheartening anytime someone decides to leave a series after having involved since the first day of the project. It’s especially disheartening when that departure comes ahead of a planned final season; Cougar Town managed to hang on to every series regular for its first five seasons and when TBS announced that the show would be renewed for a sixth and final season, it seemed as if the entire Cul-de-sac Crew would stick together for the duration of the show’s run. However, the show’s renewal delay, combined with the creative frustration that comes with playing the same character for a several seasons, took its toll on Van Holt and caused him to leave.

In addition to his role on the TBS comedy, Van Holt has appeared on the likes of The Bridge, John From Cincinnati, and Threshold. He recently wrapped production on Syfy miniseries Ascension, where he’ll be playing spaceship captain William Denninger.

The sixth and final season of Cougar Town is slated to premiere in early 2015 on TBS.

One possible avenue for the show to take the guest appearance is to have Perry’s character act as a rival of sorts for Jules, either someone who she has an antagonistic relationship with dating back many years and reappears in town or someone who serves as major business competition for her. There’s also the chance that they’ll have Perry be someone from Jules’ romantic past who gets under Grayson’s skin with how he interacts with Jules today; the show would never have Jules cheat, but it would have her mess with her husband’s head a little, so she could feasibly play up the flirtation while never planning on doing anything about it.

In addition to his Emmy-nominated role as Chandler Bing on the seminal sitcom, Perry has appeared on the likes of The Good Wife, Mr. Sunshine, and Go On. His appearance marks the third Friends reunion that Cougar Town has seen, following Jennifer Aniston’s turn as a new age-y therapist and Lisa Kudrow’s guest spot as a dentist. Yet to appear are David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc, though both of them have stopped by Kudrow’s Web Therapy, which recently completed its third season on Showtime.

The fourth season of Cougar Town, its first on the cable net following a three-year run on ABC, has featured the Cul-de-sac Crew forming a dodgeball team, finding insomnia cures, and flashing back to the beginnings of their clique. However, the group of (mostly) 40-somethings have also dealt with feelings of insecurity that come with aging and being married to someone for a while, as well as religious differences, medical ailments, and career crises. The next episode, titled “This Old Town,” finds an elderly couple wanting to buy Grayson’s house, Bobby renaming his boat following another business mishap, and Travis searching for the perfect Penny Can partner.

Since launching its fourth season on TBS Jan. 8, Cougar Town has averaged 2.8 million viewers, 1.7 million adults 18-49 and 812,000 adults 18-34 in Live + 7 delivery. The show ranks as TBS’s top original primetime series everwith adults 18-49 and total viewers.

Cougar Town airs Tuesdays at 10:00 on TBS. The finale of the 15-episode fourth season airs April 9th.

So what exactly is Cougar Town about?

Cougar Town is the story of Jules, a 40-something realtor living in a cul-de-sac in Florida. After getting divorced from her husband, she decided to go all out and date younger men to try and have a little fun, but ultimately, that didn’t feel right to her. Eventually, she falls for her neighbor Grayson, a fellow divorcee (and total playboy) who previously has no trouble adjusting to single life. The two got married in the third season finale and will be having to consolidate their two houses/lives into one in the upcoming season, which will be an issue for control freak Jules and commitment-phobe Grayson.

However, while Cougar Town can be looked at as a show about second chances and the value of putting yourself out there, it’s also a show about friendship and how friends become your family. Joining Jules and Grayson in the cul-de-sac are Travis, Jules’ college-age son with ex-husband Bobby; Laurie, Jules’ best friend and the woman Travis loves (but can’t be with); Ellie, Jules’ other best friend and whose husband Andy is best friends with Bobby; Bobby, Jules’ golf pro ex-husband; Tom, Jules’ neighbor who leers around the kitchen window and desperately wants to be included in the gang; and Big Lou, Jules’ third wine glass of the series.

The fourth season of Cougar Town premieres Tuesday, January 8th at 10:00 on TBS.

The latest promo for Cougar Town finds the gang doing the thing that they hate the most in the world – wasting wine. To the tune of, well, “Spill the Wine”, Jules tosses drinks at the other cast members, each of them ending up with a red-stained (formerly all-white) outfit. However, they get the last laugh by launching their drinks at Jules and soaking her dress, as well.

It’s the latest promotional ad in TBS’s push to further dispel any notion that Cougar Town is still about Courteney Cox’s character fooling around with men half her age. The network, which has already cut several commercials for the ensemble comedy that have been making the rounds on their channel, is tackling the primary issue that non-viewers seem to have with the show: the title. When Cougar Town premiered in 2009, the first 6-7 episodes were indeed about a recently divorced 40-something getting back into the dating world with younger men, but the show then changed directions and became the comedy that it is today. The problem is that the name combined with the opening episodes turned viewers off and even though a title change has been talked about for a while, nothing has come to fruition.

What we do get, though, are ads that play up the friendship of the gang, as well as the amount of wine they can put away. Fair trade-off, I think.

The 15-episode fourth season of Cougar Town premieres Tuesday, January 8th at 10:00 on TBS. There’s no word yet of when a marathon of the first three seasons will air on the network, though it should be announced shortly.

When Swingtown aired in the summer of 2008, it was named about as aptly as Cougar Town, but given far less credit. The issues it tackled had so much promise, with the new empowerment of women in the workforce only one of the many that could have shined if it had continued. Kudos to The CW for giving the 70s another chance at life with “Meridian Hills.” Add this to the Carrie Diaries and there will be two decades covered by women with strong voices, which are perfect for the 18-34 demographic they are seeking.

Although the real war for women’s rights started in the early 20th Century, it wasn’t until the 70s that the Equal Rights Amendment was ratified into the US Constitution. Setting “Meridian Hills” in a libation filled, traditionally male run environment such as a country club will provide a lot of story to play with. The main character will be a young newlywed who joins the Justice League, befriending an unlikely lot of women with which she finds she has a lot in common.

Of course, there is a lot of time between now and production time, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this projects gets a green light. It’s certainly more original than reimaginings of Alice in Wonderland, Sleepy Hollow, Great Expectations and Wonder Woman, which are also all on The CW development logs. There are no plans for Ms. Kunis to join the program in an acting capacity at this time. We’ll keep you appraised of any further news as it appears.

But now, the show is going even further than the mocking title cards and making the name one of the centerpieces of advertising its move to TBS. Rather than making fun of its title again, Cougar Town has begun explaining what the show actually is about and, consequently, what it’s not. For instance, there are no cougars of any variety on Cougar Town anymore, as Trav graduated from the high school whose mascot was the cougar during the first season and Jules got married to Grayson at the end of last season, ending her single-dom for good. Heck, even Barb, the last reminder of the show’s “former life”,  managed to relinquish her cougar status last season after getting married, so for all intents and purposes, the cougar in Cougar Town is dead. RIP.

What remains of the show for the upcoming fourth season are the friendships that have been formed, the relationships that have evolved, the new business opportunities that are looming, and all the sweet, sweet wine that they’ve shared in the process.

The fourth season of Cougar Town premieres Tuesday, January 8th at 10:00 on TBS. It will feature 15 episodes with an option for an additional season in 2014.
