For their part, The CW commenced with some blood-letting today, canceling two freshman dramas and one sophomore dramedy.

First to meet the blade is The Carrie Diaries, a prequel of sorts to the HBO series Sex and the City. Season one averaged a meager 0.5 rating, so it was widely seen as a bit of a shock that Diaries even squeaked out a season two renewal at all. Things went nowhere but down the second time out, with Diaries’ average rating falling to a 0.3.

Next up on the chopping block is sci-fi romance Star-Crossed, which has seemed destined for cancellation almost since the beginning. Star-Crossed premiered to decidedly mixed reviews and an 0.5 rating, and quickly bottomed out at a 0.3, where it has remained ever since. The CW was likely hoping Star-Crossed would be their Roswell, but alas, it was not to be.

Finally, the award for most surprising cancellation of the day goes to The Tomorrow People. A modern-day remake of a 1970s British series, Tomorrow follows a group of young adults that find themselves persecuted due to their naturally evolved psychic powers.

Starring Robbie Amell (brother of Arrow star Stephen Amell), Tomorrow picked up a passionate fanbase, and its ratings for the first half of its run really weren’t too bad. Unfortunately, things eventually started to crater, and an ill-fated move to Mondays after Star-Crossed did the show no favors. Sadly, these particular people won’t live to see tomorrow.

Did The CW make the right call? Or should one or more of The Carrie Diaries, Star-Crossed, and The Tomorrow People have gotten picked up for another season? Let us know in the comments.

The fantasy romance, which stars Matt Lanter and Aimee Teegarden as an alien boy and human girl who find themselves drawn together in a world that wouldn’t accept them, debuted earlier this month to decent-at-best numbers that dropped for its second episode.

Encoring the show on Fridays should give the show an extra dose of exposure, but without original programming as a lead-in and with only two weeks of repeats planned, the effect on the Star-Crossed‘s Monday ratings will be negligible at best. The show was already asked to do quite a bit when it premiered against the Olympics with Beauty and the Beast, which has fallen in the ratings during season two, as its lead-out and with the second episode only getting a repeat as a lead-out, the odds were stacked too highly against it to become a solid network player.

Plus, it seems as if The CW is putting more focus on fellow midseason drama The 100, which isn’t set to premiere until March. That series, a post-apocalyptic drama about juvenile delinquents inhabiting a possibly contaminated Earth, is the more expensive of the two midseason dramas and gets one of the strongest lead-ins the network can provide, possibly with the intention of renewing the show and recouping the money they spent on sets. With Star-Crossed the decidedly cheaper of the two, a cancellation wouldn’t hit the network as hard in its pocketbook.

In addition to Lanter and Teegarden, Star-Crossed stars the likes of Malese Jow, Grey Damon, and Natalie Hall.

Star-Crossed airs Mondays at 8:00 on The CW. The network announced that the season finale of the show will be airing Monday, May 12th.

Have you been watching Star-Crossed? Do you think The CW has treated the show well? Where should the network have scheduled the show if not Mondays?

The following week, fellow freshman drama Star-Crossed will close out its season, this time at 8:00.

The Tuesday dramas will also be concluding their 2013-2014 runs a week apart, with The Originals drawing to a close on May 13th at 8:00 and Supernatural‘s ninth season going out with a bang on May 20th at 9:00. Arrow will conclude its third season on Wednesday, May 14th at 8:00, with midseason drama The 100 stretching its way into June with a first season finale on June 11th at 9:00. The Thursday dramas will be the only CW pairing that ends on the same night, as The Vampire Diaries and Reign will have their respective season finales on Thursday, May 15th. The lone remaining series, Hart of Dixie, will end its third season on Friday, May 16th at 9:00.

No date has been set for the resumption of Beauty and the Beast‘s second season, though The CW has announced that two-part miniseries Labyrinth will air Thursday, May 22nd and Friday, May 23rd. The project, which stars the likes of Katie McGrath and Tom Felton, chronicles the journeys of two women separated by centuries as they hunt for The Holy Grail.

Season finale dates for ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX should all be released in the coming weeks, likely around the time we get summer schedules for each network.

Which CW finale are you most looking forward to? Of the currently unrenewed shows (Hart of Dixie, Beauty and the Beast, The Carrie Diaries, Star-Crossed, The 100, and The Tomorrow People), which do you think make it to another season? Are you surprised that talk of the end of the season has already begun?

With more networks delving into scripted programming than ever before, there are going to be quite a few options for ever the most discerning of viewers, so to help cut through the clutter and find the best that midseason 2014 has to offer, TVHackr has keyed in on 10 new series that have the potential to become strong staples for their networks. Whether it be a strong cast, promising concept, or intriguing enough trailer, these shows have something that caught our eye and made us want to see more.

Only included in the list, sorted in alphabetical order, are shows that will be making their series premiere in the coming months, whereas last year’s list was a mix of returnees and rookies. A list of midseason premiere and return dates can be found here.

Bitten (January 13th, Syfy)
Who’s in it: Laura Vandervoort, Greyston Holt, Greg Bryk, Paul Greene, and Steve Lund
What’s it about: The only female werewolf in existence and the ties that bind her to her pack.
Why?: The latest Canadian import for Syfy, Bitten looks to follow the lead of Lost Girl in spotlighting a sexy, butt-kicking heroine dealing with a major identity crisis.

Black Sails (January 25th, Starz)
Who’s in it: Toby Stephens, Luke Arnold, Zach McGowan, Jessica Parker Kennedy, and Hannah New
What’s it about: Decades before Treasure Island, Captain Flint fights for the survival of a criminal haven.
Why?: Executive produced by Michael Bay and said to be a mix of literary characters with real life figures, Black Sails could be the splashy, audience-pleasing hit that Starz is looking for.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh19hCkvVLw

Enlisted (January 10th, FOX)
Who’s in it: Geoff Stults, Chris Lowell, Parker Young, Keith David, and Angelique Cabral
What’s it about: Three brothers living and working together on a Florida army base.
Why?: FOX’s upcoming military comedy has an amiable cast and the type of goofy, warm-hearted sense of humor that will pair well with Raising Hope.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpZ79FXs-eI

Helix (January 10th, Syfy)
Who’s in it: Billy Campbell, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kyra Zagorsky, Mark Ghanime, and Jordan Hayes
What’s it about: A CDC team gets called to an Arctic research base to look into a potential viral outbreak.
Why?: Helix promises a claustrophobic atmosphere that capitalizes on a premise not out of the realm of real life possibility.

Looking (January 19th, HBO)
Who’s in it: Jonathan Groff, Murray Bartlett, Frankie J. Alvarez, Scott Bakula, and Russell Tovey
What’s it about: Three friends living and loving in San Francisco.
Why?: Coming on the heels of increased support for same-sex marriage, the Andrew Haigh-directed dramedy is the first predominately LGBT series since the days of Queer as Folk, Noah’s Arc, and The L Word.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnGwmP8qg2c

Mixology (February 26th, ABC)
Who’s in it: Blake Lee, Vanessa Lengies, Sarah Bolger, Adam Campbell, and Andrew Santino
What’s it about: Six women and five men try to find love over the course of one night.
Why?: The intriguingly structured premise and cast of unknowns/potential breakouts make Mixology something that could flourish as it goes along.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEYP2O1nm4E

Penny Dreadful (April, Showtime)
Who’s in it: Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Billie Piper, Timothy Dalton, and Helen McCrory
What’s it about: Classic horror characters grapple with alienation in Victorian London.
Why?: Showtime goes to the horror well by humanizing the things that go bump in the night and exploring what it’s like to live in a world where you don’t feel you belong.

Resurrection (March 9th, ABC)
Who’s in it: Omar Epps, Kurtwood Smith, Devin Kelley, Frances Fisher, and Samaire Armstrong
What’s it about: A small town is shaken to its core when former residents return from the dead, unaged since and unaware of their deaths.
Why?: Though its premise is eerily similar to Sundance’s The Returned, this ABC drama offers a slightly less creepy, slightly more hopeful version of events.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvaMQ7Umsc0

Star-Crossed (February 17th, The CW)
Who’s in it: Aimee Teegarden, Matt Lanter, Malese Jow, Grey Damon, and Titus Makin Jr.
What’s it about: A group of aliens get assimilated into a high school and a romance develops between an alien boy and human girl.
Why?: Best described as Roswell with an allegorical tinge, the show will rely heavily on the chemistry between the leads and the depth behind its set pieces.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DJ0kqEKIvc

The Red Road (February, Sundance)
Who’s in it: Martin Henderson, Julianne Nicholson, Jason Momoa, Allie Gonino, and Tom Sizemore
What’s it about: A sheriff finds himself partnering with a local Indian tribe as a way of covering up a crime committed by his wife.
Why?: Sundance went on an impressive hot streak with its 2013 scripted programming that The Red Road, with its unusual premise and intimate setting, looks to continue.
He”s set to play Sector Enforcement Unit Office Jack Beaumont, responsible for overseeing the compound that has housed the Atrians (aka aliens) for the past decade. His first appearance will be in the second episode of the series.

Starring Aimee Teegarden (Friday Night Lights) and Matt Lanter (90210), Star-Crossed tells the story of the Atrians crash-landing on Earth and the fierce battle that resulted, where the creatures were holed up in the Sector and unable to interact with or learn how to assimilate into human society. However, after ten years, an initiative has been passed to test human-Atrian interaction and a group of high school students will be the test subjects. Included in that group is Roman, whose life was saved after the landing by a little girl named Emery, who he comes face-to-face with for the first time since then once he enrolls at her school. Given the tension between the humans and Atrians, them even talking to one another in public, let alone reconnecting on a romantic level, could cause a tremendous stir and make things even worse, but could they be drawn to each other to such a degree where it doesn”t matter? Is there a chance that they try to make things work, even if they have to keep it a secret?

In addition to his role as Karl “Helo” Agathon on the Syfy space drama, Penikett has appeared on the likes of Dollhouse, Continuum, and Castle. He joins Jonathon Schaech (Ray Donovan) in recurring on the fantasy romance, with the latter playing the uncle to Matt Lanter”s Roman.

Star-Crossed is set to premiere sometime this midseason on The CW.

Will you be watching Star-Crossed? What kind of role do you think Jack will play in the show”s first season? Who else would you like to see guest star on Star-Crossed?

The series takes place 10 years following an invasion from a species of aliens known as Atrians, who lost the ensuing conflict with the humans and are only now being assimilated into society. Namely, a group of Atrian teenagers has been enrolled at the local high school to see the level of human/alien interaction and whether full-scale assimilation is a feasible goal at this time. While some fear the Atrians and others try to bully them into submission, one girl finds someone she thought she lost a decade ago and will stop at nothing not to lose him once again.

Currently unscheduled, Star-Crossed will both benefit from arriving later in the season, once several new shows have already failed and the network can more strategically schedule it, and be hindered by the absence from the fall schedule, as viewing habits can be more difficult to break than they’re given credit for. Should the show be placed with one of the more compatible series the network has (most notably, Beauty and the Beast), it might be able to find a foothold, though. The introduction of a full-length trailer, of which none of The CW’s new dramas has, could stir up more interest around the Romeo & Juliet-type series and give it the boost that neither 2013 midseason CW show received.

In addition to Lanter and Teegarden, Star-Crossed stars Grey Damon, Natalie Hall, Malese Jow, Titus Makin Jr., Chelsea Gilligan, and Greg Finley.

Star-Crossed is set to premiere sometime this midseason on The CW. You can check out The CW’s 2013 fall schedule here, as well as clips and previews of its five new dramas here.

Will you be watching Star-Crossed? Which CW show do you think it should be paired with this season? Does the extended trailer give you a better sense of what the show will be like?
