So what made the network cancel Sean Saves the World? Since its beginning, the comedy was struggling with the ratings with a 1.4 rating among adults and a viewership of around 4.4 million people for its premiere episode in October 2013. Further ahead, the ratings didn’t improve even when the show moved to the time slot of 9:30 p.m. with a series low of 2.6 million viewers.

Hayes, however, still maintains a relationship with the network through his Hazy Mills production Grimm, which has performed pretty well on Fridays and the impromptu Hollywood Game Night returns for a winter run. For record, this is the second comedy cancellation by NBC for their 2013-14 season run. Prior to Sean Saves the World, the network’s comedy Welcome to the Family was also discontinued after a couple of low-ranking episodes. And also, NBC’s decision comes on a day when the network orders the comedy pilot of a gay-themed One Big Happy, produced by Ellen DeGeneres. Well, the network’s entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt has often struggled with the gay-themed shows in the recent past. In the last season too, The New Normal by Ryan Murphy was also discontinued by NBC after only the first season.

Before the season began, it seemed like an obvious conclusion that The Michael J. Fox Show would inherit the 9:00 slot from The Office, as the show was given an off-cycle 22-episode straight-to-series order and 9:00 would be the biggest and best showcase for Fox’s return to the network after decades away. However, NBC opted to use another NBC veteran in Sean Hayes for the 9:00 slot, possibly as a way to counterprogram CBS attempting single-camera comedy with The Crazy Ones. Following decent debuts, both soon sank and even helped The CW nearly tie NBC from 8:00-10:00 during one fall Thursday, with Sean‘s renewal chances crippled following a sub-22 episode order.

The next episode of The Michael J. Fox Show, which should make for a more apt lead-out for Parks and Recreation, will find Mike battling Susan for a chance to cover the Winter Olympics, Eve entering a beauty contest ironically before her competitive side takes over, and Leigh becoming convinced that the ghost in her apartment is interesting in her. Meanwhile, on Sean Saves the World, Liz and Lorna conspire to sabotage Sean’s date with his pretentious ex-boyfriend and Max convinces Hunter to help house his flock of birds.

The shortened order tells me two things: the show faces an uphill battle regarding a second season and NBC will be shifting its schedule come March, either by airing the two comedies it planned to use after The Voice (Growing Up Fisher and About a Boy) on Thursdays or using new multi-cam Undateable. Freshman shows that find themselves in the weird gray area between a set 13-episode order and a 22-episode order tend to have only gotten the extension due to scheduling needs and therefore, unless there’s a sudden burst of momentum from people sampling Sean last Thursday, star Sean Hayes’ star power might not be enough to get the show a spot on next season’s schedule.

While it’s difficult to get any eyes to NBC for programming that’s not The Voice or Sunday Night Football, the network didn’t do the show any favors by how they scheduled it, as Sean Saves the World is the lone multi-cam in a lineup of single-cam comedies and is forced to face off with fellow new comedy The Crazy Ones and Grey’s Anatomy. It might have been more beneficial to slot this show behind The Michael J. Fox Show rather than making it to fend for itself with a DOA lead-in (Welcome to the Family), especially when Fox has built on Sean for all but one week this season.

In addition to Hayes, Sean Saves the World stars Linda Lavin, Megan Hilty, Echo Kellum, Thomas Lennon, and Samantha Isler.

Sean Saves the World airs Thursdays at 9:00 on NBC.

The core of the Friday lineup won’t be returning until Friday, October 25th, when Grimm will debut its third season at 9:00 and Dracula begins NBC’s test of low cost international co-productions at 10:00. Until they debut, Fridays will likely be the land of repeats and Dateline, which has its season premiere on September 27th before shifting to 8:00 once Grimm and Dracula arrive.

Among the other later debuts of the season are The Biggest Loser (October 8th), returning to the fall with a one-hour edition; Blair Underwood cop drama Ironside (October 2nd); interracial marriage comedy Welcome to the Family (October 3rd); and Sean Hayes vehicle Sean Saves the World (October 3rd).
