HBO has released the first trailer for upcoming drama series The Leftovers, which just had its premiere date moved back two weeks due to a production hiatus. The series will be the fifth and final new series to premiere this year on HBO, joining True Detective, Looking, Doll & Em, and Silicon Valley.
From Damon Lindelof (Lost), The Leftovers takes place in the wake of a global “Rapture” that sees 2% of the world’s population vanish without a trace. Those left behind must figure out why they weren’t chosen, make peace with the loss of their loved ones, and attempt to move on from what will surely be a life-altering event. The series is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, who is listed as an executive producer.
The Leftovers stars Justin Theroux (American Psycho) as Chief of Police Kevin Garvey, a father of two who is trying to keep the small town he lives in as normal as possible in the wake of the “Rapture”; Amy Brenneman (Private Practice) as Kevin’s wife Laurie, who recently left her entire life behind to join a mysterious cult; Carrie Coon (One in a Million) as Nora Durst, a wife and mother who loses both her child and husband in the “Rapture” and must adapt to losing the people who formed her sense of identity; Christopher Eccleston (Doctor Who) as Matt Jamison, a former reverend and current editor of a self-published tabloid; Liv Tyler (Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) as Meg, a woman about to get married who becomes the target of a cult; and Amanda Warren (Seven Psychopaths) as Lucy Warburton, the town mayor.
The Leftovers is set to premiere Sunday, June 29th at 10:00 on HBO.
Will you be watching The Leftovers? Do you think the show will make for a compatible lead-out for True Blood? How should the television adaptation differentiate itself from the novel it’s based on?
