TNT has announced that crime drama Murder In the First has been renewed for a 10-episode second season. The series, which wrapped its first season earlier this summer, ranked as one of basic cable’s Top 10 series of the summer, having averaged 4.7 million viewers in Live + 7 delivery, including 1.3 million adults 25-54, and reaching 9.2 million viewers through multiple platforms.
Executive produced by Steven Bochco (NYPD Blue), the first season of Murder In the First followed homicide detectives Terry English (Taye Diggs) and Hildy Mulligan (Kathleen Robertson) as they investigated two seemingly unrelated crimes that had a common link in Silicon Valley. The series differs from the typical TNT crime drama in that it focused an entire season on the link between the two crimes rather than devoting single episodes to investigating smaller incidents.
In addition to Diggs and Robertson, the first season of Murder In the First featured Tom Felton (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Steven Weber (Chasing Life), James Cromwell (American Horror Story: Asylum), Richard Schiff (The West Wing), and Nicole Ari Parker (Boogie Nights). There’s no word yet on what crime the second season would spotlight or which members of the supporting cast would carry over into a second season.
The renewal of Murder In the First follows the recent renewals of Falling Skies, The Last Ship, and Major Crimes. Among the TNT series that have yet to have their fates decided are Legends and Dallas.
What type of crime would you like to see Terry and Hildy investigate in season two? Do you think the show should continue its one-crime-a-season format or would you want to see some smaller arcs? Who would you like to see added to Murder In the First for a second season?
