NBC Comedy ‘Sean Saves the World’ gets cancelled

The network has revoked the filming of the freshman comedy ‘Sean Saves the World’. Previously NBC had ordered 13 episodes of the show, which stars Sean Hayes playing a gay single father. Five additional installments were picked up at first and out of the 18 ordered episodes, around 14 have been filmed and 12 of them aired. The two remaining episodes of Sean Saves the World are likely to be aired after the network’s coverage of the Winter Olympics. However, out of all episodes, the production of 4 has been officially cancelled, also shutting down the Universal Television Comedy.

So what made the network cancel Sean Saves the World? Since its beginning, the comedy was struggling with the ratings with a 1.4 rating among adults and a viewership of around 4.4 million people for its premiere episode in October 2013. Further ahead, the ratings didn’t improve even when the show moved to the time slot of 9:30 p.m. with a series low of 2.6 million viewers.

Hayes, however, still maintains a relationship with the network through his Hazy Mills production Grimm, which has performed pretty well on Fridays and the impromptu Hollywood Game Night returns for a winter run. For record, this is the second comedy cancellation by NBC for their 2013-14 season run. Prior to Sean Saves the World, the network’s comedy Welcome to the Family was also discontinued after a couple of low-ranking episodes. And also, NBC’s decision comes on a day when the network orders the comedy pilot of a gay-themed One Big Happy, produced by Ellen DeGeneres. Well, the network’s entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt has often struggled with the gay-themed shows in the recent past. In the last season too, The New Normal by Ryan Murphy was also discontinued by NBC after only the first season.
