The show was already cancelled once following the end of season four, where ratings had actually increased from their season three levels. However, fan outcry and some restructured financials bought the show a fifth season that turned into a sixth this past October. This time, Drop Dead Diva will be able to go out on its own terms and tie up the loose ends that have come undone during the past six seasons, something that not every show gets to say.

Diva coming to an end means good things for every other scripted show in Lifetime’s slate, including sophomore dramas Devious Maids and Witches of East End and recently picked up Un-Real and The Lottery. With The Client List and Army Wives having already met their makers, these are the only four continuing scripted shows on Lifetime, meaning that the network is confident enough in what its newer dramas to where it feels comfortable letting go of something as sturdy as Drop Dead Diva. It puts a certain amount of pressure on the upcoming dramas, seeing as how Maids and Witches performed well in their respective debut seasons and wouldn’t have had to worry about Diva being renewed ahead of them, but the network obviously likes Un-Real and The Lottery enough to give them the support necessary to become the next Lifetime building blocks. As such, a disappointing ratings start might not be a death knell for either.

The dramedy, focused on a shallow model living a second life in the body of a brilliant plus-sized attorney, has been given a 13 episode-0rder for the new season.

The renewal comes after Lifetiime already revived the series earlier this year, as it had cancelled Drop Dead Diva after its fourth run.  Due to reaction, Lifetime and Sony TV, who produces the show, managed to come up with a cost-effective deal to keep the series worthwhile on the network’s lineup, and ordered a fifth season for the show – aired this past summer.

(Kudos to the show for titling its season 5 opener “Back from the Dead,” by the way)

Any Drop Dead Diva fans out there? Good news!  Season six is expected to air next year.

Anna Torv and Jennifer Jason Leigh have signed on to the Ryan Murphy HBO drama pilot and will play a lesbian couple (a yoga instructor and an actress, respectively) dealing with outside attractions. (Deadline)

Raising Hope
Jeffrey Tambor will portray Arnold, a resident of Natesville who starts popping up in the lives of everybody in the Chance family. He joins Molly Shannon in guest starring on the comedy, heading into its fourth season this fall. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Saint George
Danny Trejo has been cast in the upcoming FX comedy as the uncle of the main character (played by George Lopez), a construction worker who serves as a drinking buddy and mirror for those around him. Sherlock

Drop Dead Diva was unexpectedly canceled this past January by Lifetime, even after the fourth season finale marked a season high in total viewers. The reason given was rising costs, with rumors abounding of the network wanting to search for more buzz-y pilots, but a month and a half later, the show was renewed and thus able to continue telling its story.

Season four ended on a pretty major cliffhanger, so this season on Drop Dead Diva, the show picks right back up on the action. While Jane is frantically searching for Owen after he goes missing following her kiss with Grayson, Kim goes public at the firm with her pregnancy and Stacy is contemplating the future of her business. Jane will also have a new heavenly guide this season in the form of Justin Deely, who is set to play Paul.

Drop Dead Diva stars Brooke Elliott (Wicked, Taboo), Margaret Cho (Cho Dependent), Jackson Hurst (Living Proof), Kate Levering (Cashmere Mafia), April Bowlby (Two and a Half Men), and Lex Medlin (Southland). Returning to the show this season are John Ratzenberger (Cheers) as Kim’s father and Jaime Ray Newman (Red Widow) as Grayson’s ex-fiancee Vanessa. Other guest stars will be announced in the coming weeks.

The fourth season of Drop Dead Diva will be available on DVD Tuesday, June 18th.
