“Louis said he needed extra time between seasons three and four of his show because – even though Louie was the most critically acclaimed television comedy series in America – he needed to make it even better,” said John Landgraf, CEO, FX Networks and FX Productions. “Based on the first three episodes we’ve seen, remarkably, he accomplished his goal.”

The Emmy-winning series is coming off a 19-month hiatus that nearly kept it from being eligible from next year’s awards, though the network has fought against that by airing two episodes a week so that over half the season will have aired by the May 31st deadline. An additional bonus of airing two episodes of Louie together is that FX is light on comedies at the moment and wouldn’t have had anything to air along with it, thanks to Wilfred, the show that Louie aired with for its second and third seasons, being moved to FXX for its fourth and final season.

Though Louie has attracted quite a bit of critical and awards attention, the show has never been a ratings magnet and rather than leaving it stranded on a night that has already nicked Archer and caused Chozen some ratings difficulties, FX is opting to make the best of a new situation and stir up a shorter, more concentrated buzz for their comedy crown jewel. With Louie being the only comedy airing on FX this spring, there was a chance it could have reverted back to its status in season one as a post-drama 11:00 show, but since it’s earned a certain notoriety in the proceeding seasons, the network likely decided that it’s too big a show to tuck behind one of their dramas.

Will you be watching Louie this season? Do you think the move to Mondays will ultimately be a good thing? What type of episodes are you expecting from Louie after the hiatus?

Taking home individual honors were Louis C.K. for the third season of FX comedy Louie and Tatiana Maslany for the several roles she plays in BBC America’s Orphan Black. While this is C.K.’s second consecutive win in the category, it was Maslany’s first nomination, though she won a Critics’ Choice Television Award earlier this summer.

Among the three major program categories, Breaking Bad was named Program of the Year, reigning Program of the Year winner Game of Thrones earned honors for Outstanding Achievement in Drama, and there was a tie for the comedy equivalent, as The Big Bang Theory and Parks and Recreation will share the award. Meanwhile, Bunheads took home the award for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming shortly after its cancellation, Shark Tank won for Outstanding Reality Programming, and The Americans picked up Outstanding New Programming.

A full list of nominees and winners is below.

On Friday, August 23rd, the first seven episodes of Asylum will air beginning at 10:00 p.m. and ending at 5:00 a.m.; the remaining episodes of the miniseries, which reaped 17 Emmy nominations earlier this month, will then be broadcast the following day starting at 11:00. Meanwhile, the entire third season of Louie, nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series for the first time this year, is set to air Saturday, August 17th beginning at 10:30 p.m.

While American Horror Story and Louie weren’t the only FX series to make it into the Emmy pool, they were far and away the most successful in securing nominations, as The Americans and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the only other FX series nominated, combined for three nods. Last year, both series managed to pull off victories for the network, with the former earning two wins (one for Jessica Lange) and the latter being recognized for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. Their chances this year, though, are tough; on the miniseries/movie side, Horror Story has to deal with the likes of Behind the Candelabra and Top of the Lake, while Louie will face off with the final season of 30 Rock and a still strong Modern Family. Will either be able to increase their win total from a year ago? Or would they be doing well to hold steady in terms of total wins?

The third season of American Horror Story, subtitled “Coven,” is set to premiere later this fall, while the fourth season of Louie is on hold until May 2014.

Will you be watching either the American Horror Story: Asylum or the Louie marathon? How do you think American Horror Story will adapt to its third altered cast and concept this fall? How many Emmys can Louie win?

The rest of the comedy winners included a repeat for Louis C.K. and a first victory for reigning Emmy winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus, while Patton Oswalt was honored for his guest stint on Parks and Recreation this season and Eden Sher picked up her first award for playing Sue Heck by tying with Cuoco for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Meanwhile, on the drama side, Breaking Bad scored two wins, including one for Bryan Cranston, and Orphan Black‘s Tatiana Maslany earned Best Actress in a Drama Series, defeating the likes of Claire Danes, Vera Farmiga, and Keri Russell en route. Parenthood‘s Monica Potter and Southland‘s Michael Cudlitz took home their respective supporting categories, while Jane Fonda was singled out for her performance on The Newsroom, which returns for a second season in July.

American Horror Story may have lost the award for Best Movie or Miniseries to HBO’s Behind the Candelabra, but they made up for it by sweeping the supporting categories thanks to performances by Sarah Paulson and Zachary Quinto. Michael Douglas and Elisabeth Moss won the leading categories for their performances in Candelabra and Sundance’s Top of the Lake, respectively. Finally, the reality/talk categories split their affections, as Duck Dynasty, Dancing with the Stars, Push Girls, The Voice, and The Daily Show with Jon Stewart all were recognized.

What do you think about the Critics’ Choice Award winners? Which do you think was the best win? Were there any noticeable snubs?
