Based on the 1995 Terry Gilliam feature film and adapted for television by Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett (Nikita), 12 Monkeys tells the story of a time traveler (Aaron Stanford) from the post-apocalyptic future who travels back to present day to locate and destroy the source of a devastating plague. Once he arrives, though, he learns that his mission will be more difficult than he anticipated and could possibly cost numerous innocent lives in order to be completed.

In addition to Stanford, 12 Monkeys stars Amanda Schull (Suits), Kirk Acevedo (Oz), and Noah Bean (Damages). The series is the latest piece in Syfy’s plan to re-embrace harder science fiction, an agenda that began this year with the premieres of Helix and Dominion. Once home to lighter fare like Eureka and Warehouse 13, the network has a six-episode miniseries set aboard a space craft coming this November, with adaptations of The Expanse and The Magicians already in the works.

12 Monkeys is set to premiere January 2015 on Syfy. A concrete premiere date should be released later this year.

The move to pick up 12 Monkeys comes after the network picked up a second season of Ron Moore’s Helix and reentered the world of long-form storytelling with event series Ascension, a space opera that premieres later this year. Per a report last month by The Hollywood Reporter, Syfy is said to be in the early stages of something of a network rebrand, as they reembrace “hard” sci-fi in the vein of Battlestar Galactica and turn away from the lighter tone of projects like Eureka and Warehouse 13. In the case of 12 Monkeys, it will be assuming the mantle of Being Human, which airs its series finale this coming Monday; High Moon, a space drama from Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies) that was the other project the network had in development, will not be going forward.

The network is said to be eyeing the launch of five to six original scripted projects, all with orders of 8-10 episodes rather than a typical 13, and one four-hour miniseries for 2014. Their next series, thriller Helix, premieres in January.

Elsewhere in the world of genre television, BBC has announced that they”ll be co-producing a fantasy drama called Atlantis with the intent of airing it during their Supernatural Saturdays programming block this fall. From Howard Overman (Misfits), Julian Murphy (Merlin), and Johnny Capps (Merlin), the series is said to reimagine Greek myths and legends in a story where young Jason arrives to the famed city, home of bull leaping, snake haired goddesses, and giant palaces. The cast is set to include Mark Addy (Game of Thrones), Jemima Rooper (One Man), Juliet  Stevenson (The Hour), Sarah Parish (Hatfields & McCoys), and Jack Donnelly (Dancing On The Edge).

“Atlantis is the perfect  series for our long-running successful Supernatural Saturday programming block. An incredible creative team and exciting cast are in place to deliver ambitious adventures this fall,” said Richard De Croce, Senior Vice President of Programming at BBC America.

BBC America had success earlier this year in the genre game with Orphan Black, which earned its star Tatiana Maslany a Critics” Choice Award and a second season, set to debut in April 2014. The series was released on DVD and Blu-ray earlier this month.
