The first four seasons will be made available on Thursday, October 31st, while seasons five through eight are set to debut January 1st, 2014. Dexter has been on Netflix in the past, but this is the first time in two years that the drama will be on the streaming service.

“We’re thrilled to have Dexter, one of Showtime’s highest-rated shows on Netflix, and so quickly after it completed its record-breaking run,” said Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix. “This is one of the great serialized dramas of the past decade and we know our members will enjoy discovering or reliving the twisted world of Dexter Morgan anywhere and anytime they want.”

In its eight season run on the premium cable network, Dexter grew in the ratings every season and spent multiple seasons as Showtime’s top-rated drama. The series, which stars Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan, a Miami forensics expert and serial killer, also earned several awards during its run, including four Emmys, two Golden Globes, seven Satellite Awards, six Saturn Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a TCA Award, and two AFI Awards, putting it in the top ten programs of its respective year.

Aside from Hall, Dexter starred the likes of Jennifer Carpenter, David Zayas, Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, and Lauren Velez. Its series finale, which aired last month, was one of the more controversial drama endings in recent years, both in terms of what actually happened and what Showtime executives dictated the show could do for its final episode.

Will you be checking out Dexter when it hits Netflix? What other Showtime shows would you like to see released on the streaming service? Do you think that other premium cable networks like HBO and Starz will ever release their programming on Netflix?

Titled “A Beautiful Day,” the episode jumps ahead from the events of the seventh season finale and finds Deb in a state of disarray following LaGuerta’s murder. Miami Metro has adapted to the loss of its former lieutenant with a promotion from within, but there’s no time for them to wallow in the loss, since a fairly gruesome murder has popped up on their radar. Could there be another serial killer lurking in Miami? If so, how long will it take for them to draw Dexter’s attention?

This season of Dexter will be the first time the show has aired outside of the fall, as each of its first seven seasons premiered in either September or October. The move was made to take advantage of Homeland‘s surging ratings and allow the network’s two highest rated dramas to launch two new series in 2013. Dexter‘s absence will be majorly felt by Showtime, seeing as how it managed to climb to series high numbers for its seventh season finale, but if either of the two new shows pop, its ending won’t do as much damage, so the strategy to move it to summer is a solid one. Dexter has always felt like a summer show, thanks to its sunny Miami setting, and the lack of heavy fall competition might cause it to shoot up even more, providing soaring Showtime with another ratings win and Ray Donovan with enough cushion to establish itself.

Dexter airs Sundays at 9:00 on Showtime. You can check out the series premiere of Dexter’s new lead-out, fixer drama Ray Donovan, here.

Will you be watching Dexter this season? How do you think the show should conclude later this summer? Is there a chance that Dexter makes it out of the series alive?

Show highlights include:

-“The Leak…” – It’s crunch time and James goes into serious training to be in top form for Dancing with the Stars. Luther is tasked with keeping James on a strict regimen, but leave it to a jealous Chloe to try and sabotage it. Still, that’s the least of their worries when embarrassing photos of James leak all over the internet.

-“Monday June…” – June has been so stressed and consumed with work that she has no time for anything else, including Chloe. Chloe’s remedy for this is to slip June an herbal relaxant, but the next thing June knows, it’s Tuesday, and Monday is a complete blackout. As she tries to piece together what happened, June discovers some surprising things about herself. Meanwhile, James grapples with the idea that he may have impregnated June’s friend, Crissy, on her wedding day.

-“Teddy Trouble…” – With the help of Teddy, her childhood friend from psychopath camp, Chloe prepares for the imminent battle-royale at an annual department store warehouse sale. However, she is uncharacteristically distracted by the return of Benjamin who, June insists, is Chloe’s true love. Meanwhile, James is disappointed to learn his Beek-brand jeans are not selling as well as expected.

-“The D…” – When Chloe gives June a ‘D’ on her yearly roommate evaluation, June correctly assumes the poor mark is due to her anemic social life. In order to up her grade, she agrees to go on a blind date with James’ agent’s assistant, Will. The pair hits it off, that is until June realizes they know a person in common. Meanwhile, Luther helps James prepare for an audition with Woody Allen.

-“The Seven Year Bitch…” – When Chloe uses her time-honored veto power to try to force James to break up with his new girlfriend, James decides to buck tradition and continue seeing the girl. Needless to say, Chloe doesn’t take the rebuff well, and so she and James decide to take some time off from their seven-year friendship. A devastated June does her best not to choose sides, but she and Luther soon discover how Chloe and James’ lives are drastically affected by their time apart.

-“Using People…” – June is shocked to discover that Chloe has been attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings solely to have a captive audience for her stories… and to score free liquor. As June gives Chloe an earful for using people for her own ends, Chloe points out that hypocrite June has been taking advantage of Mark and his unrequited feelings for her, leading June to the realization that maybe she has stronger feelings for Mark than she’s been willing to admit. Meanwhile, worried he’s too “light weight” to be cast by Martin Scorsese, James tries to add some depth to his character by co-opting others’ tales of woe.

-“Ocupado…” – As Chloe and Benjamin’s sex-fueled relationship amps up, each admits to currently having additional sex partners in their “rotations.” While this revelation comes as no surprise – or deterrent — to either, Chloe is uncharacteristically jealous when she learns that she is number two on his roster, while Ben is her number one. Meanwhile, while working on a commercial, James competes with director Ben for the crew’s affections.

-“Original Bitch…” – Ten years before June moved to New York, Chloe moved into Apartment 23 and met her new roommate, Trish… the original “bitch.” After taking Chloe under her wing and teaching her everything she knew about bitch-itude, Trish betrayed Chloe and disappeared. Now, thanks to the services of a private investigator, Chloe’s got a lead on Trish and, with June in tow, sets off to exact her long-awaited revenge. Meanwhile, James learns his father isn’t his real father. Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver) and famed Latin singer and actress Charo appear as themselves.

–The Voice will continue to alter its judging panel, as Christina Aguilera and CeeLo Green are set to return for the show’s fifth season in the fall. For the sixth season, to debut after the Winter Olympics, current judges Shakira and Usher will return. Blake Shelton and Adam Levine will be present through both cycles of the hit singing competition. The current cycle of The Voice is averaging a 5.2 rating, 14 share in adults 18-49 and 14.5 million viewers overall on Monday nights, making it the season’s #3 primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49, as well as the #2 entertainment series and the #1 reality series, according to “most current” results from Nielsen Media Research.

-Syfy has announced that Warehouse 13 has been renewed for a fifth and final season. The six-episode installment is set to air in 2014, while the show is currently finishing out its fourth season. Warehouse 13 airs Mondays at 10:00 following Defiance, which has already been renewed for a second season.

-SOAPnet has announced a One Tree Hill Father’s Day marathon for June 16th. Here are the episodes included:

10AM – “To Wish Impossible Things” – Jake, Nathan and Lucas are sold to the highest bidder for charity in the annual Tree Hill “Boy Toy” Auction. Jake’s mysterious winning bid turns out to be Nicki, his former flame who abandoned both him and Jenny, their nine-month-old daughter. Nicki mistakenly thinks the two can reconnect, but Jake takes the opportunity to school her on the repercussions of her abandonment.

11AM – “All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone” – Nathan and Haley leave their high school graduation ceremony when Haley goes into labor with their son Jamie. Karen’s delivery does not go well, and a momentary loss of life lets her, Keith and their daughter share a moment in heaven. Two weeks later, Haley and Nathan are nervous to attend a party and be away from the baby for the first time. Dan turns himself in to the police for Keith’s murder and is tormented by his sins in prison.

12PM – “Things a Mama Don’t Know” – Peyton, spilling tears of joy, tells her fiancé Lucas that he’s going to be her “baby daddy”. Jamie is proud to hear that his father, Nathan, has been picked up as a point guard by the Charleston Chiefs basketball team. Lucas finds himself in the middle of a father-son feud in Hollywood, which gives him the opportunity to reflect on the type of father he wants to be. Brooke’s motherly instinct helps her track down her runaway foster daughter, and brings an end to two violent crimes that have haunted Tree Hill.

1PM – “A Hand To Take Hold of The Scene” – Lucas and Peyton have an exhausting trial run as parents when they babysit for the night.

-USA has greenlit two comedies, both of which will debut in the first quarter of 2014. Sirens, from Denis Leary and Bob Fisher, follows three of Chicago’s best EMTs whose sometimes silly, self-righteous and even self-destructive personalities make them unqualified for sustaining relationships, friendships and most occupations. Meanwhile, Playing House, which stars Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham, is a single-camera buddy comedy about what happens when two best friends come back together, just when they need each other most.

The show had been airing on Tuesdays and will now finish its first season on May 26th. Meanwhile, Kim Zolciak’s Don’t Be Tardy has been pushed back to the 10:00 hour on Tuesdays, where it had been airing at 9:30. Also, the season premiere of Chef Roble & Co. will now air Wednesday, June 5th at 10:00, a day later than its originally announced date.

-John Oliver is set to assume his guest hosting duties on The Daily Show Monday June 10th, as Jon Stewart takes time off to direct his first feature film. Stewart is set to return on Tuesday, September 3rd.

-Oprah Winfrey’s interview with the first openly gay active NBA player, Jason Collins, will air Sunday, May 5th at 8:00 on OWN. The interview will also feature Collins’ parents and twin brother Jarron.

-KSL, NBC”s Salt Lake City affiliate, has decided it will no longer air Hannibal, citing viewer complaints about the serial killer drama. The affiliate, owned by the Church of Latter-Day Saints, has already pulled The New Normal this season, long been opposed to Saturday Night Live, and yanked The Playboy Club in the fall of 2011. Hannibal will now air on Salt Lake City’s CW station, KUCW.

–Pretty Little Liars star Tyler Blackburn has agreed to star in Ravenswood, the Pretty Little Liars spin-off debuting this October. Blackburn’s character, Caleb Rivers, will travel to Ravenswood during the annual Pretty Little Liars special Halloween episode; he’s still set to appear in the summer run of Pretty Little Liars episodes, though, which begin Tuesday, June 11th.

-ABC Family has released descriptions for the season premieres of Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy.

Melissa & Joey – “Works for Me” (May 29th – 8:00)
Joe pursues a new job opportunity, sending Mel into a panic when she realizes he may actually leave. But the job isn’t quite what Joe expected, causing him to reevaluate his place in the house and Mel’s scheming to prove how much everyone needs him. Meanwhile Lennox thinks her artist boyfriend, Zander, may have found another muse, and Ryder’s class trip has an unexpected outcome.

Baby Daddy – “I’m Not That Guy” (Wednesday, May 29th – 8:30)
Ben thinks he might like Riley and tries to convince her he’s changed his playboy ways. Riley invites Ben to be her date at a work party, but Ben’s efforts to prove he’s dependable fall short. Danny hopes to come to Riley’s rescue, but arrives only to find Riley getting friendly with another man (guest star Matt Dallas). Meanwhile, Tucker schemes to go out with a model, and Bonnie attempts to get to know a handsome stranger…with a little help from Emma.

–Dallas has officially been renewed for a third season by TNT. Season three is set to have 15 episodes and launch in early 2014, though there’s no word on if they’ll run consecutively or if some will be held for a summer run.

-Months before their debuts, Showtime’s summer and fall scripted programming have new teasers.
Dexter (June 30th – 9:00)
DEXTER stars Michael C. Hall in his Golden Globe and SAG Award-winning role as Dexter Morgan, a complicated and conflicted blood-spatter expert for the Miami police department. Season eight begins six months after LaGuerta’s murder – and Dexter is still managing life as a dad, brother, and serial killer. As Deb (series star Jennifer Carpenter) struggles to deal with the consequences of her actions, a mysterious woman comes to work with Miami Metro, offering first-hand information on Dexter’s past. The series also stars Desmond Harrington, C.S. Lee, Aimee Garcia, David Zayas, Geoff Pierson and James Remar.

Ray Donovan (June 30th – 10:00)
Set in the sprawling mecca of the rich and famous, RAY DONOVAN stars Emmy(R) and Golden Globe(R) Award nominee Liev Schreiber in his first lead television role as LA’s best professional fixer. Ray is the man called in to make the city’s celebrities,’ superstar athletes,’ and business moguls’ most complicated and combustible situations go away. This powerful drama unfolds when his father, Mickey Donovan, played by Oscar(R) winner Jon Voight, is unexpectedly released from prison, setting off a chain of events that shakes the Donovan family to its core.

Web Therapy (July 22nd – 11:00)
Season three finds Fiona (Lisa Kudrow) coming to terms with the new landscape of her life – her politically disgraced husband, Kip (Victor Garber), has run off with his male campaign manager; Fiona’s mother (Lily Tomlin) has started up a rival business called “Net Therapy” and has poached Fiona’s assistant Jerome (Dan Bucatinsky) to run it; her romantic friendship with media-mogul Austen (Alan Cumming) is on the rocks, now that he has fathered a child with hyper-sexualized Gina (Jennifer Elise Cox); she’s being investigated for campaign finance improprieties; and her unpublished manuscript is being adapted into a Broadway musical without her consent! All this, while she continues to offer “therapy” to the hapless clients who have wandered into her web…

Homeland (September 29th – 9:00)
HOMELAND Season 3 opens during the aftermath of the horrific terror attack that decimated the U.S. intelligence apparatus, and prompted a global manhunt for the world’s most wanted terrorist – Nick Brody (Damian Lewis). As Carrie (Claire Danes) and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) begin to pick up the pieces of their shattered professional and personal lives, they are swept up in the political and media firestorm surrounding the terror attack and the subsequent search for Brody’s whereabouts. The series also stars Morena Baccarin, Rupert Friend, Jackson Pace and Morgan Saylor.

Masters of Sex (September 29th – 10:00)
MASTERS OF SEX stars Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan, who will portray the real-life pioneers of the science of human sexuality, William Masters and Virginia Johnson. The series chronicles the unusual lives, romance and pop culture trajectory of Masters and Johnson. Their research touched off the sexual revolution and took them from a mid-western teaching hospital in St. Louis to the cover of Time magazine. The series is an adaptation of Thomas Maier’s book Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson, The Couple Who Taught America How To Love.

-HBO has announced their documentary schedule for the summer. Included are Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer (June 10th), about the arrests of feminist art collective Pussy Riot; Love, Marilyn (June 17th), coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death; Miss You Can Do It (June 24th), spotlighting the first woman with a disability who competed in the Miss USA pageant; Gideon’s Army (July 1st), following public defenders from the south and the challenges they face; Gasland Part II (July 8th), the follow-up to the Oscar nominated original film; The Crash Reel (July 15th), a look at the life of Kevin Pearce, the American snowboarding champion who suffered a traumatic brain injury while preparing for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics; The Cheshire Murders (July 22nd), exploring the triple rape-arson-homicide that rocked the quiet town of Cheshire, Ct. in July 2007; First Comes Love (July 29th), following director Nina Davenport’s quest to have a baby on her own; Casting By (August 5th), spotlighting Hollywood casting directors; and Americans in Bed (August 12th), features candid interviews with ten American couples – captured in the comfort of their own beds – as they openly discuss sex, infidelity and love.

The series, which has grown its audience with each successive season to become Showtime’s most successful of all time, has earned a Peabody Award and two placements on the AFI year-end top 10 list, in addition to garnering star Michael C. Hall a Golden Globe, a SAG Award, and five consecutive Emmy nominations for his role as Dexter Morgan.

“When it debuted in 2006, Dexter redefined the genre, by taking the anti-hero to new heights and pushing the boundaries of the television landscape,” said Matthew C. Blank, Chairman and CEO, Showtime Networks Inc. “Dexterpaved the way for the next generation of award-winning hit Showtime series, and its cultural impact will be felt for years to come.”

“Dexter is a landmark franchise for our network, and we cannot wait to unveil the conclusion of this series, as we know it, to the millions of passionate fans who have supported the show season after season,” said David Nevins, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc. “We’d like to thank Michael, Jennifer, and Dexter‘s indomitable cast, executive producers, writers and crew for eight incredible seasons.”

The eighth and final season of Dexter premieres June 30th at 9:00, where it will lead into the series premiere of Liev Schreiber-starring Hollywood fixer drama Ray Donovan.

Do you think that season eight should be the end of Dexter or does it have more life left in it? How do you think the show should end? Can Dexter continue the creative momentum from season seven?
