Executive produced by Jeffrey Reiner (Friday Night Lights) and Eric Overmeyer (Treme), The Affair follows history teacher Noah (Dominic West) as he brings his family to Montauk for a summer of sun, sand, and relaxation. After a tough school year pounding the pavement in Brooklyn, he wants to spend time with his kids, get in a little writing on his second novel, and find a way to slow down for once in his life, but all that gets thrown for a look when he meets Alison (Ruth Wilson). Still grieving a loss in her life, Alison meets Noah at a quiet diner one morning and the two feel an instant attraction to each other, though since both of them are married, neither of them decide to pursue whatever it was that they felt between them.

Until, that is, they run into one another later that night. Still curious about their connection and the possibility that the other possesses something that their respective spouse doesn’t, Noah and Alison let things go further than they had intended, something that could threaten their marriages and the lives they had worked so hard to build.

In addition to West and Wilson, The Affair stars Joshua Jackson (Dawson’s Creek) as Alison’s husband Cole and Maura Tierney (Rescue Me) as Noah’s wife Helen.

On the series premiere of The Affair, Noah has an encounter with Alison, a waitress having trouble getting over a recent tragedy, on the first day of his summer jaunt to Montauk. Despite the attraction that he feels toward her, partially fueled by his own desperation to escape a particularly rough morning with the kids, Noah treats the experience as all that it was – a hungry family grabbing a bite to eat and a food service worker doing her job. However, once Noah runs into Alison for a second time, this time on the beach late one night, he begins to wonder whether fate is pushing him toward this woman for one reason or another. He’d never thought about stepping out on Helen, as he loves her deeply, their sex life is nothing to complain about, and he wouldn’t want to jeopardize the life they build together, but he knows that there’s something between him and Alison that he must explore or else he’ll always be wondering about what could have been.

History teacher Noah has a chance encounter with waitress Alison (Ruth Wilson), still recovering from suffering a recent personal tragedy, and begins an affair that threatens to rip both of their marriages apart. Noah has been married to high school sweetheart Helen, who goes through a range of emotions after finding out about the tryst, for nearly two decades, while Alice is married to Cole (Joshua Jackson), a cowboy who manages the ranch he inherited from his family.

Should The Affair go to series, it will be the second television role for Goldani Telles, who spent one season playing feisty dancer Sasha on the ABC Family critical darling.

The Affair is one of two pilots currently in contention at the network, joining contemporary political thriller The Vatican, which stars Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) as the Archbishop of New York. Production on the pilot will get underway sometime later this year, with a pickup decision not likely until sometime in early 2014. While there’s a chance that each could be picked up to series a’la Ray Donovan and Masters of Sex, both will be behind psychosexual thriller Penny Dreadful, which was greenlit to series this past January and begins production in October.

One of two drama pilots currently in contention at the network, the other people contemporary thriller The Vatican, The Affair tells the story of two marriages that are torn apart by an indiscretion. History teacher Noah (Dominic West) has a chance encounter with Alice in the pancake house she works at and the two quickly begin having an affair underneath the noses of Cole and Helen (Maura Tierney), Noah’s wife of 17 years and mother to his two children. The series, from In Treatment’s Sarah Treem and Hagai Levi, is said to switch between a male and female perspective on the matter.

It seems possible that Showtime might end up picking both The Affair and The Vatican up to series, given that Dexter will be signing off next month and The Borgias was canceled earlier this summer. Granted, they’ve already ordered a new series in psychological thriller Penny Dreadful, but with its limited run and the all-star casts the network has been assembling, they might not be able to resist both series, especially since their subscriber numbers have only been increasing in recent years. Given Penny Dreadful‘s series order and The Vatican already being finished with pilot production, The Affair is third in line at the network in terms of positioning and readiness, since Jackson is the last of the four main characters to be cast, so if Showtime is completely taken by the pilot and opts to pick it up, there simply might not be enough room on the schedule until 2015.

In addition to his role as Peter Bishop on the FOX sci-fi drama, Jackson was a series regular on Dawson’s Creek for the entirety of its six season run.
