Yes, some shows are successful enough to get their extensions earlier in the season, while others didn’t see November, let alone give themselves a chance to get an order in November, but there are still several shows awaiting news of their fate. With production on each charging hard toward unlucky episode 13, the last in every new fall show’s initial order, networks will have to decide which projects they’re confident enough to stick with, which they think they’re better off without, and what their schedule will look like as a result of every pickup and every fatality.

Below are the five new fall shows that have yet to receive word either way as to their status on the network. Included are the date they premiered, how many episodes they’ve aired to this point, where they’re produced (a sometimes crucial aspect of pickups and cancellations), what shows they essentially replaced, and whether TVHackr thinks they’ll be continuing on past episode 13.

Constantine (NBC)
Premiered: Friday, October 24th
Episodes Aired: 3
Production Studio: Warner Bros. Television
Previous Time Slot Occupants: Dracula (fall), Hannibal (winter/spring)
Will It Get More Episodes?: Yes. As long as Constantine manages to stay within a couple tenths of Grimm and keep itself above the 1.0 demographic line, I don’t see a reason why NBC wouldn’t give it some type of extension. Given the time slot, the show’s genre, and the lack of wide-reaching brand awareness, NBC couldn’t have been expecting Constantine to break out or build off of its lead-in, not when its first two weeks coincided with the World Series and Halloween. Even though the show is hurt by being an outside production vs. a co-production like Dracula or a NBCUniversal production like Grimm, Constantine is still NBC’s best, most reasonable option for the time being, especially with Grimm weaker than usual and the rest of the week in more pressing need of repair. With Hannibal said to not be ready until at least April, look for 18-ish episodes of Constantine, with possibly more if they want to confine Hannibal to summer.

Cristela (ABC)
Premiered: Friday, October 10th
Episodes Aired: 5
Production Studio: 20th Century Fox Television
Previous Time Slot Occupant: The Neighbors
Will It Get More Episodes?: Yes. The only way that Cristela doesn’t get some type of extension is if ABC decides to get rid of the Friday comedy bloc before slotting Shark Tank spin-off Behind the Tank at 8:00 this spring. The network would then end Cristela after its initial 13 episodes before doubling up on Last Man Standing originals and getting it off the schedule by March, a similar decision to ABC’s shortening Last Man Standing and Malibu Country to 18 episodes before using Fridays for Happy Endings burn-off. While that’s a distinct possibility, ABC seems too invested in Cristela to do something like that, not when Behind the Tank could be used to plug other holes on the schedule (e.g. Tuesdays at 8:00). With Shark Tank still around a 2.0 in the demo, Cristela is looking similar to The Neighbors in that it’s not performing that well but it’s not harming the night as a whole, so ABC could easily let it play out the string and see how it holds up come spring.

The McCarthys (CBS)
Premiered: Thursday, October 30th
Episodes Aired: 2
Production Studios: CBS Television Studios and Sony Pictures Television
Previous Time Slot Occupants: Two and a Half Men (fall), The Crazy Ones (winter/spring), Bad Teacher (spring)
Will It Get More Episodes?: No. The McCarthys came in as CBS’ lowest fall comedy premiere of all time and slipped in its second week, so it would have to greatly improve in the next couple of weeks in order to make it all season. And even then, CBS has projects to replace The McCarthys, which was picked up as a result of weak comedy development (a’la Partners from 2012), with, including Matthew Perry-starring The Odd Couple and the 22-episode fifth season of recently syndicated Mike & Molly. With Elementary at dangerously low levels, fellow comedy basement dweller The Millers owned by CBS, and Scorpion becoming the network’s biggest fall hit, thereby keeping the return of the Monday comedy bloc off the table for this season, there’s simply no room on the schedule for The McCarthys. At this point, if the show manages to air a double digit number of episodes, it would be a pretty tremendous victory.

Red Band Society (FOX)
Premiered: Wednesday, September 17th
Episodes Aired: 6
Production Studios: ABC Studios, Amblin Television, and Filmax International
Previous Time Slot Occupants: The X Factor (fall), American Idol (winter/spring)
Will It Get More Episodes?: Maybe. A Red Band Society extension depends on two things: 1) how much FOX values (and can monetize) DVR ratings and 2) what FOX wants to do with Fridays. Red Band Society has made itself competitive for a back order thanks to strong Live + 3 and Live + 7 numbers, which offset pretty dire Live + Same Day ratings, but where those numbers have been harder for the networks to monetize, they might not be enough for Red Band to see past its thirteenth episode. What could help the show’s case, though, is what FOX decides to do with Fridays; back order or no back order, Red Band Society will have to move from its Wednesday slot to accommodate American Idol, so its best hope for an extension is that FOX keeps it around to fill out Fridays this spring. If FOX believes in it enough, it might be able to shift to Tuesdays with female-friendly comedies New Girl and The Mindy Project, where the three would have to feed off of one another, but the most likely fate for Red Band, should it get a back order, is Fridays with the final season of Glee.

State of Affairs (NBC)
Premiered: Monday, November 17th
Episodes Aired: 0
Production Studio: NBCUniversal Television
Previous Time Slot Occupant: The Blacklist
Will It Get More Episodes?: Yes. It’s not as emphatic a yes as one would expect given the factors working for the show (Katherine Heigl’s return to television, a spot behind The Voice, Blacklist-y ad campaign), but that’s moreso due to the strange scheduling than anything about the show itself. NBC will be airing three episodes of State of Affairs behind a weakening The Voice before (presumably) bringing it back in January as a lead-out to Celebrity Apprentice; had State of Affairs started out behind The Voice, thereby getting that show’s highest ratings as a lead-in and airing in a similar pattern, it would’ve been a shoe-in for a back order. However, the on-off scheduling and the weaker lead-in will be a major test for State of Affairs, one that, if it can hang on to February/March and the return of The Voice, could lead to an extension that will take it through the remainder of the season and help it make it a decent push for season two.

One would think that with an assortment of time-shifting data, demographic breakdowns, and intricate budget reports that renewals and cancellations, even for the most bubble-y of bubble series, would be decided by the end of a show’s season. However, renewals are often based on factors outside of numbers, with studio affiliation, scheduling room, development strength, and executive changes playing as big a role as Live + 7 numbers and audience skew. As such, weighing out every factor and trying to parse through the cases for and against a bubble show can often take time, much to the chagrin of dedicated fan bases.

But Lifetime supernatural drama Witches of East End seemed to have a stronger case going for it than against it, which makes its November 4th cancellation all the more perplexing and, frankly, frustrating. Though the show ended its second season without a renewal decision, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that it would return for a third season, given that fellow Lifetime veteran Devious Maids also suffered a sharp ratings drop in a move to another time of year. Granted, Maids was always the higher rated of the two, but the fact that it took several months for the Marc Cherry soap to get renewed seemed to point toward a similar fight (and similar result) for Witches. Yet Lifetime ended up cancelling Witches of East End after two seasons, something that could come back to bite them.

As evidenced by their recent series pickups, Lifetime is looking to expand the definition of what it means to be a scripted show on their network. Coming up in the near future are Un-Real, a behind the scenes look at a reality dating series that focuses on a staff member tasked with manipulating relationships; The Clan of the Cave Bear, which takes place 25,000 years ago; and Damien, a sequel series to iconic film series The Omen which would concentrate on an adult Damien Thorn. Though it might be understandable that the network wants to change its perception, Witches of East End walked the line between the two Lifetimes that have developed thanks to these series orders – it’s very much a genre show, so it doesn’t necessarily fall in line with the network’s history of soaps, but it’s a genre show that’s overwhelmingly female, a tweak on the old “Television for Women” adage that throws a group of strong women into an unusual situation. Keeping Witches around would not only keep the network from reinventing itself too quickly, thus risking alienating those who’ve remained loyal over the years, it would allow that network a piece of flexible genre entertainment that explores issues (femininity, female empowerment, female sexuality) that might not be addressed in their other projects. For as much as Lifetime needs to keep up with the Joneses and all these new networks throwing their hat into the scripted ring, they’re risking losing what makes them distinct by cancelling Witches of East End and thereby diluting their brand as a network built for stories about women embracing their power and making their way in a sometimes unkind world.

What’s most interesting about the Witches of East End cancellation was that it left Lifetime with a whopping one veteran series in 2015. Part of the reason that I was as assured as I was that Witches would be returning was that it seemed impossible that a network would order as many new shows as Lifetime did and then ask them all to self-start. Placing two new shows together on a schedule, even if you’re a cable network, is pretty suicidal, in that one almost always dies – it’s too much to ask a new show to launch something wholly on its back, while the lead-out never receives the same amount of sampling and is often at the mercy of its DVR performance. Even if Witches of East End was down over the course of its second season, having it around to help bolster the new shows and give Lifetime a steadier utility player (once it got its sea legs this summer, Witches ended up being pretty consistent) to fill out its schedule sounds better than asking the 2015 premieres to go it alone. Lifetime might be as confident as ever in Un-Real and Damien, but that doesn’t mean that they’re not going to need help or that confidence is going to translate into a strong launch. With Army Wives concluded, The Client List cancelled, and Drop Dead Diva dead for a second time, Lifetime lost several power players over the last couple of years; however, that doesn’t mean that wiping the slate clean is the answer, not when Witches of East End was still putting up renewable numbers in a worse situation than it had in season one. Renewing the show for a third season would’ve allowed it to act as a bridge between Lifetime identities, keeping the network’s female-focused feet in the past while being compatible enough with the new projects to act as a lead-in without feeling out of place.

Most pressingly, the cancellation of Witches of East End is a sign that shows about women are an endangered species. Lifetime is the latest network to back away from focusing on female audiences, as we TV dropped “Women’s Entertainment” from its name, Style was rebranded as male-focused Esquire, and The CW doing away with soaps in favor of comic-based and science-fiction programming. There are networks still invested in telling female stories, with Bravo and E! entering the scripted fold with Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce and The Royals, respectively, but for the most part, female audiences are being ignored in favor of male audiences, the most elusive demographic in all of television. Not only is it harder to get men to watch live television, meaning that advertisers will pay more for those who do tune in, male-centric programming tends to generate more critical and social media buzz, which can often be as valuable as advertising dollars to a network looking to make a splash. In trying to broaden its demographic, Lifetime has put itself in the unenviable position of having to reverse a reputation built through years of catering to female audiences; it’s going to take quite a bit of groundwork for men to even find the network and if this latest wave of scripted series doesn’t pan out, there’s a distinct chance that their core audience might not be as quick to return as they might have thought. Lifetime might not be the scripted powerhouse that it seems to want to be, but there are worse positions to be in than having one hit show and one moderately-rated show with a vocal, passionate online presence.

Thus, the cancellation of Witches of East End was short-sighted: it’s too much change too quickly for Lifetime, something that could turn off a sizeable segment of its fan base; it leaves Devious Maids as the only returning show in 2015 and puts even more pressure on the new shows to perform, given that they don’t have a lead-in; and it inadvertently continued the marginalization of female-focused programming that Lifetime, formerly known as “Television for Women,” should be one of the leaders in fighting against.

Much of the ABC fall premieres are concentrated in the traditional premiere week, which the broadcast nets have been moving away from in recent years, with Dancing with the Stars the lone early launch. Procedural Forever will get a look behind the venerable reality competition before moving to Tuesdays the following day, while the entire Wednesday and Thursday lineups will premiere together. Friday sees a one-hour Last Man Standing season premiere, a two-hour Shark Tank premiere, and a delayed launch for new comedy Cristela; Sundays, meanwhile, will have a delayed premiere for America’s Funniest Home Videos.

The series will then bow in its regular time periods on Tuesday, September 9th and Friday, September 12th. Notably, the first episode of Gotham will be premiering Monday, September 22nd, where it will go against The Big Bang Theory, The Voice, and Monday Night Football; it was thought that the network would give their greatest fall hope an early start to increase sampling.

Scripted content doesn’t return until September 21st with the premieres of Madam Secretary and The Good Wife, with the main takeaway from CBS’s scheduling being that they desperately want tech drama Scorpion to succeed. Having broken up their Monday night comedy lineup for the first time in three decades, CBS will surround Scorpion with an hour of The Big Bang Theory and the second season finale of ratings juggernaut Under the Dome. Similarly, CBS will give the first season finale of summer drama Extant a boost with a Survivor lead-in.

Among the series that will have delayed premieres are 2 Broke Girls, Elementary, and Two and a Half Men, all due to the introduction of Thursday Night Football. You can check out a full list of CBS fall 2014 premiere dates below, as well as the CBS fall schedule here and trailers for new CBS series here.

As has become tradition in recent years, the network will stagger out its premieres rather than concentrate them during Premiere Week – the third week in September when the broadcast networks would typically debut all of their new product.

Most notably, NBC has held their Tuesday comedies until October, with two-hour episodes of The Voice leading into Chicago Fire, while Grimm will get a late October premiere for the third time in four seasons. This time, the supernatural procedural will be helping to launch DC Comic adaptation Constantine, which stars Matt Ryan and Harold Perrineau. NBC will also be holding Katherine Heigl political drama State of Affairs until November 17th, debuting it in the middle of sweeps and right as the seventh season of The Voice begins winding down; The Blacklist will go on hiatus as of November 10th before returning with a post-Super Bowl episode in February 2015.

You can check out a full list of NBC’s fall premiere dates below, as well as their 2014 schedule here and trailers for their new fall shows here.
