It’s both a time of energy and of peace, where the city gets the shot in the arm it needs to make it through the remaining weeks of winter and where whatever woes they’re facing get drowned out by second lines and magnanimous camaraderie. Full of color, music, and merriment, Mardi Gras has also been the time where Treme weaves its many disparate threads into one tapestry, a way to bring characters who wouldn’t otherwise be around one another into the same universe.

On the series finale of Treme, the darker side of Mardi Gras comes out when shots are fired during a celebration. While the event makes for dramatically interesting character combinations and has been a commonality shared by everyone in the city, even if they don’t go to anything related to the event itself, it can sometimes get the mix wrong and result in unexpected threats to people who just want to have the excuse to smile and let go. Not everyone thinks of Mardi Gras as a time for dancing and culture, spirit and tradition; some view it as a time where their misdeeds can be masked by the crowds clogging up the city, a time to settle the scores they’ve been wanting to settle for the last year. But is there a chance that someone we’ve come to know and love won’t make it out of Mardi Gras alive?

Elsewhere on Treme, Terry is offered a transfer from NOPD, while guardians send Albert home, Antoine goes to a Dr. John gig with his sons, and Davis takes care of his pothole.

The series finale of Treme airs Sunday at 9:00 on HBO.

What do you think will happen at Mardi Gras on Treme? Will Terry be happier now that he’s out of the department? Is going to the Dr. John gig going to inspire Antoine’s sons to get even more into music?

For the past three seasons, the DJ/record label executive/front man has poured himself in the city’s music scene both because of his love for the creativity that thrives in the Big Easy and his desire for respect for his own craft. However, the type of success that Davis has been chasing hasn’t made its prevalent during the run of Treme, with his job at the radio station being on-off, Aunt Mimi taking the reigns with Mercury Monterrey, and his bands breaking up due to internal politics, lack of interest, and a shrinking New Orleans music scene. Even though Davis has put quite a bit of leg work into New Orleans, has it been enough for him to be remembered?

On the next episode of Treme, it’s Davis’ 40th birthday and as such, he’s waxing philosophical about his place in New Orleans and how he’s not where he wanted to be when he hit this age. He does have an idea on how to leave his mark, though – running a music club, seeing as how several establishments have been shut down recently and his own band was denied their final show due to the club they regularly played being locked up. While this is impressively ambitious, as is the fact that he wants to place himself among the New Orleans greats when it’s all said and done, running a place like that isn’t as easy as drinking, listening to music, and closing up every night. It’s finances, networking, noise codes; it’s the stuff that Davis either doesn’t want to or hasn’t considered. Getting a club off the ground for someone with an established history in that aspect of the music industry is hard enough, so a man like Davis who hasn’t owned a club and doesn’t have the greatest business background/experience anyway is going to be next to impossible.

Elsewhere on Treme, Toni gets a break in her case, while Annie makes a decision about the fate of her band, Delmond receives an offer that he doesn’t think he can refuse, and L.P. returns to New Orleans.

Treme airs Sundays at 9:00 on HBO. You can check out a preview of the episode here.

Would opening a music club give Davis the type of legacy in New Orleans that he craves? Do you think that Annie will get rid of her band in search of solo stardom? Why would L.P. return to New Orleans after getting his article published?

It’s part of the foundation for who he is as a man, a father, and a friend, his assuming the position informing every decision, every heartbreak, and every triumph that came afterward. Apart from his family, it’s perhaps the most important thing in his life and something that he takes quite a bit of pride in, both in terms of what the public sees and the private meetings he has with the rest of his people. While he won’t yet take advantage of that sense of community now that he’s sick, Albert has some thinking and planning to do regarding his duties as Big Chief, just in case he might not be able to lead the tribe at Mardi Gras this year.

On the next episode of Treme, Albert has extended the offer to Delmond to assume his duties as Big Chief should the cancer take too much of a toll on his well-being and knock him out of what could be his final Mardi Gras. Though Delmond is likely to be immensely honored and moved by his father entrusting something so precious with him, having to take on the responsibilities of Big Chief could have a negative impact on his playing career and force the ceiling on what he’s able to do as a trumpeter to drop down much lower than it had been previously. Delmond has put the halt on things for the most part since his father was handed his diagnosis, so a part of him, even subconsciously, would have felt a sense of relief when Albert passed; he could throw himself into his playing and embrace the comfort that music has brought him for so many years in a time when he needed it the most. But if his father is directly coming to him about becoming the new Big Chief, will he be able to turn that down and still live with himself?

Elsewhere on Treme, Davis turns 40, Toni gets a break in her case, Annie makes a decision about her music career, and L.P. returns to New Orleans.

Treme airs Sundays at 9:00 on HBO.

Do you think that Delmond would be able to admirably perform the duties of Big Chief? How will turning 40 impact Davis’ relationship with Janette? Should Annie dump her band and attempt to go national?

Rather than live for additional years while being in pain/not himself, he wants to make the most of the time he has remaining and try to live a life that means something to him, a life as the man he’s been and the man he knows. He may not want to leave, but if Albert is forced to, he wants to leave on his own terms and in his own way. But it’s one thing to enjoy the finer things in life while you’re here and it’s another to do things that worsen your condition, which might happen when he begins working on the costume for what could be his final Mardi Gras.

On the next episode of Treme, Albert’s costume making isn’t doing his health any favors, yet for the time being, LaDonna is trying to comfort him and respect his Indian heritage.. While she knows how important his Indian heritage is to him, he might as well have continued the chemo at this rate, since making the costume has left him even more physically exhausted than usual. It was already a process that had been wearing on him in recent years, given the fact that he’s not as young as he once was, but with his weakened state, he’s gotten more tired more quickly and seems to be driving himself into the ground over something that could leave him unable to enjoy anything else in his remaining time on Earth. LaDonna doesn’t want him to look back on the final months of his life and regret not spending it with his family and loved ones, so even if he doesn’t look quite as pretty as he could on Mardi Gras, she’s going to do her damndest to make him look up and realize just how much against the clock he’s working right now.

Elsewhere on Treme, Janette and Davis spend New Year’s Eve together, while Antoine picks up another job and NOPD retaliates when Terry gets called to testify.

Treme airs Sundays at 9:00 on HBO.

Will Albert’s health allow him to complete his costume? Are Janette and Davis going to make things official and define their relationship status soon? How will Terry handle being on the bad side of NOPD?

It’s not always been easy for her and she’s had to make sacrifices to get where she’s gotten, but in the end, the music is what sustains her, the moment she hits the stage validating all the trouble that came before it. However, thus far, she’s been able to do things her way and on her terms; while that may be admirable on some level, it has a lower ceiling on how far she can go and how much impact she can make on the music industry. Is now the time for Annie to cut her band loose and try to take herself to the next level?

On tonight’s episode of Treme, Annie wins a song of the year award for “This City” and Marvin again broaches the topic of her working with the Nashville studio musicians that he previously suggested. That’s not the way that she wanted to move to the next level of her career, not after her band has been as loyal to her as they have, but if she wants to make real noise in the industry, it’s something she might have to seriously consider. While she could make a pretty decent living as a touring act in Louisiana, she’s already seemed to reach the apex of what she can do there and in order to keep growing as a musician, a move outside of the state might be her only option at this point. But will Annie sacrifice fulfilling her potential in order to avoid having to be the one to end her relationship with the band?

Elsewhere on Treme, Albert gets bad news about his cancer, while Delmond plays with Terence Blanchard in New York and violence hits one of Antoine’s students.

Treme airs tonight at 9:00 on HBO.

Should Annie agree to work with the studio musicians in Nashville? How will Antoine respond to this latest incident? Is this the moment when Albert gives up and accepts his fate?

Corruption at NOPD still remains as prevalent as ever; the hit that the city’s tourism industry took with the storm has yet to fully heal, crippling the once vibrant economy; and safety for the city’s residents is not a guaranteed thing with the rate of violent incidents and general criminality above what anyone is comfortable with. However, for all the trials and tribulations that the citizens of New Orleans have faced over the past 38 months, the one thing that has kept them sane has been the culture that they themselves have a hand in both creating and shaping. Through music, art, and food, New Orleans may not be as strong as she once was, but she’s still got quite a bit of fight left in her.

Season four of the New Orleans-set drama will have five episodes, half of the usual 10-episode order.

The late start is due to True Blood‘s reduced episode order booting the start of Boardwalk Empire up by two weeks and the decision to air Eastbound & Down and new comedy Hello Ladies following the Prohibition drama. As such, Boardwalk will wrap its fourth season on November 24th, with Eastbound & Down and Hello Ladies doing so a week prior, pointing to HBO doubling up on Treme episodes for two weeks. The final episode of the Emmy-nominated series, which stars the likes of Melissa Leo, Clarke Peters, and Khandi Alexander, will likely bow on Sunday, December 15th.

Of course, there’s always a chance that the network will run the episodes on a weekly basis and into the following month, though considering how viewership declines in the United States in late December, it would make more sense to double up. There’s also no word on whether the series finale of Treme will be extended beyond the normal hour timeframe; the series has exceeded the bounds of pay cable dramatic time limits on more than one occasion.

Had HBO decided not to bring Treme back this year, it could have slid into the January drama spot that was vacated by Luck in 2011. The network opted not to bring a drama into their first quarter last year in replacement of the canceled horse racing drama and used buzz-y comedies Girls and Enlightened instead. With Enlightened canceled and the ratings for Girls down, it seems like HBO will bring detective drama True Detective into the mix in 2014, possibly sandwiching Girls in between it and a new comedy.

Will you be watching Treme this season? What do you think will happen during the fourth season? How should the show come to an end?

EDIT: According to The AV Club, Treme will be airing on a weekly basis, meaning that the series finale is scheduled for December 29th. Apparently HBO’s apathy toward the show outweighs any concerns they might have about poor late December ratings.

Although she has had quite a bit of experience running her own restaurant and working with some of the greats of the business, Janette isn’t concerned with becoming the next big thing in cooking anytime soon. She wants to be able to run her kitchen the way that she deems fit, serve a variety of food to a small unit of loyal customers, and be proud of the work that she did at the end of the day.

However, she decided to open up a fairly big restaurant with a backer that she had never met before; at first, it wasn’t much of a problem, as Tim made sure to roll the red carpet out for her. But in recent weeks, Janette’s initial joy at her new situation began to dissipate, as Tim didn’t have the business savvy that she thought and would rather spend his time interviewing pretty, inexperienced women wanting to be waitresses.

But tonight on Treme, it all comes to a head when Janette volunteers to throw a benefit for Gigi’s, which sets him off. Janette hasn’t been happy in a while at the restaurant, so will this be a way for her to go back to a more humble establishment?

Elsewhere on Treme, LaDonna begins putting the pieces back together after the fire at Gigi’s, Toni and L.P. may have found a way to get the Abreu case prosecuted, Davis quits the music industry entirely with the help of Cheeky Blakk, and Annie’s album comes out.

The 75-minute third season finale of Treme airs tonight at 10:00 on HBO. The show has already been renewed for a fourth and final season, currently in production and scheduled to feature five episodes.

What have you thought about the third season of Treme? Do you think that Davis can quit the music industry for good and continue to live in the city? Will the Abreu case end up being prosecuted, rewarding Toni and L.P.’s collected effort?

NOPD may, by and large, hate her guts, but they’ve never taken it to a personal level of coming after her family or making their presence felt in any part of her personal life. Until she started digging around about Officer Wilson this season on Treme, that is.

On tonight’s episode of Treme, Toni is reeling from having to send her daughter to live with relatives and is backing away from the case as a result. She only has five (corroborated) complaints against Officer Wilson gathered and in the stopped up bureaucracy of New Orleans, that might not be enough to get him convicted. It’s one thing for the officers to talk about her behind her back or to avoid associating with her out in public, but for them to target her daughter takes the case to another level, one that, without hard evidence, Toni’s not comfortable being on. However, Bernard might have an eye witness to one of the shootings, which will be the perfect weapon to use against Wilson and something that will make each report that much strong. But can he find the witness before it’s too late?

Elsewhere on Treme, LaDonna learns who’s been threatening her, Janette finds herself a victim of her success, and Terry asks for a transfer from the department, which has grown increasingly hostile and distrustful of him.

Treme airs tonight at 10:00 on HBO. The show was renewed for a fourth and final season in September, which will consist of five episodes total. Production began earlier this month, though no premiere date has been hinted at yet.

Will whatever information Bernard has for Toni be enough to put Officer Wilson away? If anyone from NOPD gets wind of a potential witness that can put the gun in Wilson’s hand, is anyone in Toni’s life safe? How long will Sofia have to stay away from home?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the R&B legend (and one half of the iconic Neville Brothers) will be appearing on tonight’s episode of the HBO drama. Neville will, of course, be playing himself, as the Brothers are performing at a D.C. Mardi Gras Ball. Playing at the same event is Annie, with Nelson also in attendance, likely trying to schmooze his way into a more prolific, higher paying job than the one he has now.

The Ball is another step in the right direction for Annie, who has truly come into her own this season. Once too shy to play in front of many other people or to sing in front of anybody, Annie now has a manager, a record deal, and a career that has been growing in both scope and hype over the course of the season. With her venturing outside of her comfort zone and playing away from the southwest, it’s only a matter of time before she gets out of NOLA for good and sets up camp in another major city. But with new found career opportunities come tough choices and Annie will have to decide if New Orleans (and Davis) are enough for her anymore.

Neville’s acting experience is rather limited, having only appeared in a handful of movies in the early-to-mid 90’s. (His last role came as “Angry Neighbor” in the 2001 TV movie Boycott, which starred Jeffrey Wright and CCH Pounder.) However, he’ll will be joining a tremendous list of musician cameos this season on Treme, including Fats Domino, “Frogman” Henry, and Kidd Jordan.

Treme airs tonight at 10:00 on HBO. The David Simon/Eric Overmeyer creation was recently renewed for a fourth and final season of five episodes, the production of which will begin on Monday.

Are you looking forward to seeing the Neville Brothers pop up on Treme? What other musicians, NOLA-based or otherwise, would you like to cameo on the upcoming final season? Will the event the Brothers play be the boost that Annie’s career needs to go to the next level?
