Helix Season 2 Teaser: Playing God

Syfy has released the first teaser for the upcoming second season of Helix, its outbreak drama that premiered earlier this year.

The second season takes the series away from Arctic Biosystems, which was destroyed in the first season finale, and places the focus on an outbreak aboard a Windjammer cruise ship. Once the ship crashes following a struggle, the surviving CDC team discovers an island cult that believes they can create a utopian society. The team must then find ways to protect itself from the dangers of the island and from falling into the traps set by the cult, who want nothing more than to recruit new members that they deem worth of their idealized society.

Joining the cast of Helix this season are Steven Weber (Chasing Life) as charismatic cult leader Brother Michael and Matt Long (Lucky 7) as world-class toxicologist Dr. Kyle Sommer. More casting should be announced in the coming months.

The second season of Helix is slated to premiere January 2015. A concrete premiere date will be revealed later this year.

Helix Season 2: Steven Weber Joins the Cast

Deadline is reporting that Steven Weber (Chasing Life) has joined the cast of Syfy drama Helix. He’s set to recur as Brother Michael, a charismatic cult leader and a first-class geneticist. The second season of Helix will reportedly center on the CDC investigating an outbreak on a Windjammer cruise ship, which leads them to discover an island inhabited by Brother Michael’s cult, a cult that believes they can create a Utopian society.

Created by Cameron Porsandeh and executive produced by Ronald D. Moore (Outlander), the first season of Helix followed a CDC investigation into an outbreak at an arctic research base. The series stars the likes of Billy Campbell (The Killing), Kyra Zagorsky (Soldiers of the Apocalypse), and Neil Napier (Bullet in the Face).

In addition to his time on the ABC Family drama, Weber has appeared on the likes of Wings, Parenthood, and Murder in the First. He’s the second new addition to Helix this season following the inclusion of Matt Long (Lucky 7) as Dr. Kyle Sommer, a world-class toxicologist and the newest member of the CDC team.

The second season of Helix premieres in early 2015.

Helix Renewed for Season 2 by Syfy

Syfy has announced that Helix has been renewed for a second season, which will begin production later this year for a winter 2015 premiere. The show is currently averaging 2.1 million total viewers, 1.1 million Adults 25-54, and 1 million Adults 18-49.

“Helix has built one of our most loyal and consistent audiences in its first season on Syfy. The incredibly talented writing and producing team have crafted a thriller that consistently delivered suspense, twists and high quality drama. We look forward to growing this passionate audience in what promises to be an even more memorable second season,” said Bill McGoldrick, EVP, Original Content, Syfy.

Helix tells the story of a CDC team called into an Arctic research facility under the guise of a suspect viral outbreak. What they find, though, is more than any of them could have imagined. The show, which is the second renewal decision the network made about its winter 2014 scripted series following the cancellation of Being Human, features Billy Campbell (The Killing), Kyra Zagorsky (Supernatural), Hiroyuki Sanada (Extant), and Jordan Hayes (House at the End of the Street).

Helix Season Finale Sneak Peek: How Will It All End?

For 11 days, the CDC team has fought a mostly losing battle against the NARVIK virus. Their losing streak included the deaths of Doreen, Miksa, and nearly every other scientist working in the base, but they’ve managed to figure out a cure for the virus and have the power over The Scythe and the rest of the Ilaria Corporation. The Scythe might be dangerous and deadly, a centuries-old assassin who has perfected the methodology it takes to inflict maximum pain on someone before killing them, but he’s the one chasing what the CDC team has and if Alan and company can find a way to trap him, they might be able to escape the Arctic with their lives.

On the season finale of Helix, Julia learns from Hatake the reason he agreed to make NARVIK in the first place – his guilt over allowing the corporation to take Jaye and his desire to keep her safe. As long as Ilaria felt like they had Hatake under their thumb, they wouldn’t harm Jaye, so he strung them along for years and didn’t give them the cure since he knew how expendable he would be without that as leverage. Knowing the reasoning behind the virus might not give the CDC and the remaining Arctic Biosystems scientists a significant upper hand when it comes to their battle with The Scythe, but it’s something that will ease Julia’s mind and could bring her closer together with her father, assuming the two make it out of the upcoming conflict.

The season finale of Helix airs Friday at 10:00 on Syfy.

Helix 1.12 Sneak Peek: The Scythe Receives New Orders

Though the base tried to prepare against the impending invasion of Ilaria mercenaries, they were unable to safely get the newly uninfected scientists into the Montana bunker before The Scythe, Ilaria’s premiere assassin, was able to corner them in the elevator and slaughter every last straggler. Alan and Hatake looked to be able to save dozens of scientists and, if their plan to defeat Ilaria worked, make it out of the Arctic with some semblance of their sanity still in tact. However, with the walls closing in on them and The Scythe becoming more of a threat, there’s going to have to be one last battle for the virus, the cure, and the base itself.

On tonight’s episode of Helix, The Scythe receives new orders from Ilaria. Rather than stealing the virus and the formula, only to wipe the base and all who inhabit it completely off the map, he is to now terminate everyone bar Hatake, who is to be brought back alive. Since Ilaria doesn’t have any vested interest in keeping Hatake alive, it seems as if they have a special kind of punishment in mind for home due to what happened to Constance and him giving them the runaround regarding the status of the virus and the inability to exact a cure. We’ve already seen that members of The 500 can indeed be killed and Ilaria certainly doesn’t seem like the forgiving type of multi-national corporation, so they want Hatake’s last thoughts and feelings to be about the type of pain he’s being put through before they end his life for good and exact revenge for Constance.

Helix 1.11 Sneak Peek: Will Ilaria Return to Arctic Biosystems?

Constance’s death may have ultimately been beneficial to the CDC and all those still alive in Arctic Biosystems, but it was only a matter of time before her disappearance would catch the eye of the other Ilaria executives and prompt a search of the base. And this time, the corporation wouldn’t be sending another warning shot like Constance, whose presence was less threatening than Hatake and the CDC imagined it to be; instead, Ilaria would send in the big guns with instructions to leave as many dead as they could and to do whatever necessary to find and capture the NARVIK samples and the subsequent cure.

On the next episode of Helix, Hatake learns that Ilaria will be sending mercenaries to the base in the next six hours, meaning that the CDC will have to formulate a cure while under a massive time crunch and prepare to either escape the base or use Arctic Biosystems as a way of fighting back against those who seek to do them harm. But all hope isn’t lost, as Hatake plants explosives throughout the base, all likely timed to go off when the Ilaria goons come inside the base, and Alan and Julia are seeing progress with Sarah’s tumor after injecting her with a sample from Julia. All that matters now is that they see work quickly enough to get the cure, which could be helped if they see enough progress in Sarah, and come up with a plan on how they’ll leave the base and what they’ll do when they’re free from the Arctic. Ilaria won’t exactly let them escape without repercussion, so even if Alan and Julia make it to the outside world again, they’ll have to deal with the corporation for a long time.

Elsewhere on Helix, Peter leads the vectors in one last ditch effort to spread the virus.

Helix 1.10 Sneak Peek: Sarah Gets an Update on Her Condition

All Dr. Sarah Jordan wanted to do was make a difference in her field and leave a lasting mark as something of a reward to herself for her hard work. However, before she could accomplish any of the goals she set for herself and witness the evolution of the medical field, she received her cancer diagnosis, which has effectively cut her life span short and stifled her ability to perform even the most rudimentary of medical tasks. It might be understandable that she decided to withhold said information out of a desire to be seen as just another doctor, yet it’s only hurt her and those around her in the end, as she’s likely too far gone to do anything about her diagnosis now and she hasn’t been up to par when the rest of the CDC team needed her to perform.

On the next episode of Helix, Sarah undergoes a scan now that Alan knows about her condition. Thanks to her breakdown in front of Hatake, who saw the scar down her back that Alan somehow missed, she’s now become the patient that she never wanted to be in front of her colleagues. However, she has bigger concerns than her professional reputation when she experiences vivid, horrifying hallucinations while undergoing the scan and learns afterwards that the cancer is likely working its way from her spinal cord up to her brain. Sarah knew that she didn’t have a whole lot of time left, but she thought she had more than this, more opportunities to prove her validity as a researcher and value as a member of the CDC team. Now, though, she’s staring at her own mortality and the possibility of becoming a burden on Alan and Julia rather than an important cog in their journey toward answers and an eventual escape from Arctic Biosystems.

Elsewhere on Helix, Alan and Julia travel to an abandoned satellite station with the hopes of calling for help, while the truth about Hatake’s plan and Julia’s condition is revealed.

Helix 1.09 Sneak Peek: What Resides on Level X?

Alan was led to believe that Level R was the bottom of the research facility, that the vectors were being held in as tight a captivity as Arctic Biosystems would allow. It brought peace of mind in that all those infected posed less of a threat with one way of getting out into the rest of the base and made Alan feel as if he knew what was going on in the facility, top to bottom. However, Hatake has been less than truthful since the CDC has arrived at Arctic Biosystems and that deception, as much as it’s been about self-preservation and maintaining some semblance of order, comes back to haunt the team on tonight’s episode of Helix.

That’s because there’s another level in the base that the CDC weren’t made aware of – Level X, which contains the original samples of both strands of the NARVIK virus that Hatake created. He claims that being responsible for the creation of the virus was ultimately a decision that was beneficial for the world at large, seeing as how he didn’t provide Ilaria with both the virus and the cure, before warning what remains of the team that the corporation isn’t going to stop until they get what they want. As intimidating as she might have been, Constance was merely a harbinger of things to come, the first shot in an impending war over rights to the virus and the future of the human race. If Alan, Julia, and Sarah are able to destroy the remaining traces for the virus or, at the very least, use Julia’s blood as basis for an antidote, there’s a chance that NARVIK can be contained or eradicated entirely, but will they have enough to do what they need to do? And how will they find the time to work up a cure while preparing themselves for an impending invasion of Ilaria hired guns?

Helix 1.08 Sneak Peek: The Vectors Attack Level B

For as long as the vectors were quarantined in Level R, the CDC had the opportunity to focus on creating a cure that would spare the lives of the ill and keep the base from imploding. However, Alan and Sarah effectively ran out of time when he decided to retrieve Julia, opening the door to Level R and allowing several vectors to bust loose and run free throughout the facility. The group who were thought to be infected were isolated for several days in the level and as such, were waiting for the opportunity to exact revenge upon those who forced them into exile, especially since not everyone who was put into Level R in the first place was infected. Now, though, the virus has spread and evolved just in time for the vectors to make it to Level B.

On tonight’s episode of Helix, the vectors arrive back on Level B after days away and instead of merely trying to attack/maim/kill anyone in their path, they lead the base’s security team into the food storage room as a way of starving out all those who remain looking for the cure. While it’s a remarkably intelligent move considering the shape that the vectors are in and the primal state of their minds, less clear are the motives for retrieving Peter’s body from the lab. Could it be that the vectors somehow know that he was one of the first infected and hold him up as something of a hero? Or are the current vectors planning on using his body as a bargaining chip to extract information or goods from the base authorities?

Elsewhere on Helix, Sutton holds Walker prisoner in the base, while Sarah learns about the side effects of Walker’s treatment.

Helix 1.07 Sneak Peek: The Ilaria Corporate Executives Arrive at the Base

Although those at Arctic Biosystems should be thrilled that the cavalry has been called and that they might be getting out of the base sooner rather than later, there are two questions lingering about the arrival of Ilaria COO Constance Sutton – 1) who was the one who reached out for help and 2) is Constance actually going to be help or will she be the next big obstacle between them and freedom. There’s no use in getting their hopes up for a rescue or extra time in formulating a cure for the virus if she’s been called there for nefarious means or if she has something else on her mind aside from saving the CDC team and all those infected that she can.

On the next episode of Helix, Alan meets with Constance, who seems to be in his corner regarding the threat of the current situation and the need to evacuate Julia from Level R. However, since her helicopter is two days away from returning to the base, she doesn’t have the resources necessary to fix the communication system, meaning that the CDC team is now trapped with a stranger who has a vested interest in the base and what happens within its walls. She might not want word of the virus to leak out into the public sphere and could be willing to do anything she has to in order to silence Alan and Sarah from speaking out about the ordeals they’ve had in the Arctic. Will those in the base who pose a threat to Ilaria’s bottomline be able to survive the two days that Constance and company will be roaming the halls?
