Defiance Season 2 Preview: Nolan Searches for Irisa

Syfy has released an extended preview for the second season of western/science fiction hybrid Defiance. In it, we see Nolan traversing the country looking for Irisa after her disappearance, a journey that takes him to New Chicago and Angel Arc Los Angeles. The world being the way it is, though, he only runs into trouble once he crosses into cities that aren’t his and soon he’s in as much danger of not making it back to Defiance as he was of not finding Irisa.

However, it’s not as if Defiance is in such great shape, not after the E-Rep takeover that has taken the freedom that the town formerly known as St. Louis once enjoyed. With the appointment of calculating, ambitious mayor Niles Pottinger, Earth Republic has the perfect face for their cause leading the way for Defiance, a man who will toe the company line while being strong and savvy enough to handle any potential coup that comes his way. Part of the appeal of Defiance is that anyone and everyone can come to try and make a life for themselves, but in order to get the town back from E-Rep, the citizens of Defiance are going to have to forget the (sometimes) vast difference between them and band together in support of a common cause.

The second season of Defiance premieres tonight at 8:00 on Syfy.

Defiance: William Atherton and Anna Hopkins Join Season 2

Syfy has announced additional casting for the second season of Defiance in William Atherton (Life) and Anna Hopkins (Killer Wave).

The former is set to play ruthless Earth Republic official Viceroy Mercado, whose prickly air and constant stream of old Earth cultural references make him an authority figure that no one, not even the new Mayor, wants to cross. However, he may have a weakness that a worthy foe can exploit, a secret that would shock anyone who has had contact with him and knows the type of person that he can be. Meanwhile, the latter will portray Jessica “Berlin” Rai, an E-Rep soldier who creates the propaganda material that gets distributed to the citizens of Defiance, the focus of the material being the good that E-Rep is doing for the town. Described as being sexy and confident, Berlin believes that the government is an unfortunate necessity in the lives of citizens, having experienced the Pale Wars as a young girl, and will reportedly be involved in a love triangle sometime during season two.

In addition to his role on the NBC crime drama, Atherton has appeared on the likes of Desperate Housewives, Workaholics, and The Practice, while Hopkins has guested on episodes of Nikita, Law & Order, and Killer Wave. They join James Murray (Primeval) in signing on to the post-invasion drama, with Murray set to play the provisional Mayor of Defiance, having been appointed to the position by E-Rep.

The second season of Defiance, which averaged 1.5 million viewers 18-49 and 3.2 million total viewers in its first season, is set to premiere in June 2014 on Syfy. Production is currently underway on the 13-episode second season in Toronto.

Defiance Season Finale Preview: Who Will Be the One to Die?

When you put seven Votan races together in one town and throw in some humans for good measure, there’s bound to be conflicts, especially since Defiance is self-sufficient enough to where its leader doesn’t have to answer to anyone. That may be a net-positive of the arrangement, that they have the ability to fix things themselves should something go wrong, but it makes the political jostling in the town all the more tense, as what’s on the line is more than a mayoral position. It’s control of a booming boom-town and it’s the opportunity to potentially change the face of Defiance through the decisions that you make; while the latter may pack a lot of pressure on its own, the election results are made even more meaningful by the presence of the E-Rep and the chance that the town falls apart under a Datak Tarr administration.

On the next episode of Defiance, Amanda and Datak are locked in a fierce power struggle as the citizens of Defiance cast their votes for mayor. The future of the town depends on the choice its residents make and they certainly have a lot to weigh while in the voting booths – Amanda’s association with Nolan, Datak’s time in The Hollows, the role the E-Rep could play in either victory, whether a human emerging victorious could inflame the Votans, etc. Unsurprisingly, Datak is pulling out every last trick in his vast bag of ideas to sandbag Amanda and pull out the victory, but would he resort to murder to attain the office he so desperately seeks? If so, which citizen of Defiance will be in the most danger of being taken out by the Castithan?

Elsewhere on Defiance, Nolan has a violent confrontation with his military past, while Irisa has to decide whether or not to accept her destiny as the chosen one.

The season finale of Defiance airs Monday at 9:00 on Syfy.

Defiance 1.11 Preview: The Election Campaign Heats Up

Control of Defiance is up for grabs and with it, the destiny of the boom-town built on St. Louis. Amanda thought that she wouldn’t have any opponents in the upcoming mayoral election and that she’d have the time to learn how to lead, but Datak’s sudden entry into the race has thrown her political future into doubt, especially with the good PR he got from the plague. Thus far in her turn as mayor, Amanda has only been seen as filler for the next “real” leader to displace in the next election, never able to get out of Nicky’s shadow no matter what she did, and unless she finds a way to prove that she’s the right person for the town, she could be out of office before she knows it.

On the next episode of Defiance, it’s not Amanda’s lack of credentials that have the town up in arms on the eve of election. It’s their lawman Nolan, as his involvement in an accident has cast doubts on whether he’s the right man for the job and whether Amanda’s association with him has been troubling for the town. Nolan’s shoot-first-ask-questions-later way of doing his job has finally reached a breaking point, in that the town is tired of dealing with the constant threat of violence and the misunderstanding of Votan ways, so in this time of change, they might decide to get rid of both him and Amanda and start over with two new town leaders. Can he convince the citizens of Defiance that he’s the right man to protect them, even with the accident and the incidents that have defined his time as lawman?

Defiance airs Mondays at 9:00 on Syfy. The season finale is set for July 8th.

Will Nolan ultimately cost Amanda the election? Is it wise for Kenya to threaten to expose Stahma to her husband? What would Defiance look like if Datak were to win the election and run the town?

Defiance 1.10 Preview: Nolan and Tommy Discover a Body at the NeedWant

Founded on instability, violence, and fear, a town like Defiance is bound to be filled with secrets, both on-going and long thought dead. Many things have gone either unspoken in the Midwestern boom-town or, at the very least, spoken only to those who need to know and thus, there’s been tension building throughout the first season of Defiance. However, as much mystery and intrigue as there is behind Quentin’s search for the truth about his mother, Doc Yewll’s recently unveiled connection to Nicky, and the ever-complicating mayoral race, something unexpected will hit Nolan and the residents of Defiance hard enough to where some secrets might just become public knowledge.

On the next episode of Defiance, Nolan and Tommy find the body of a businessman in the walls of the NeedWant: Hunter Bell, Kenya’s former husband. However, Datak is the one who ends up arrested for the murder, throwing a major wrench in the impending nuptials between Alak and Christie. After going on a quest to find out who was responsible for levying the allegations against him, Datak seems to think that it was Rafe’s doing and the uneasy peace the two had gets destroyed in the process. Datak needs to be careful because not only is he putting himself and his family in danger by testing Rafe, he’s throwing away the opportunity to run the mines and expand his reach in Defiance. Granted, with the election looming, he might be adding more capital to his already impressive empire, but combining the mines with the political title could really give him a stranglehold on the town.

Defiance 1.09 Preview: Earth Republic Quarantines Defiance

Part of the problem with how the Defiance world is post-invasion is that with travel options restricted, it takes much longer to get anywhere than it did pre-invasion. That can be a plus in some ways, as they would have plenty of time to prepare should another town decide to try and take over, but if anyone gets sick or needs aid that cannot be provided by Defiance, they’d have to hang on until the journey can be made. Having to rely on themselves built Defiance into the town that it is, but sometimes, despite the self-sufficient nature of the alien melting pot, they need to have help in sustaining their current way of life. And with the plague hitting harder than expected, they’re decidedly on their own – for now.

On the next episode of Defiance, the plague has went from an isolated case to killing six Defiance residents and leaving 21 in critical condition, including Amanda. Understandably, without a leader to guide them through what could be a devastating outbreak, the town struggles, with Datak assuming the role of acting-mayor and likely laying the groundwork to oust Amanda from the position once election time rolls around. If the people of Defiance see him as one of the main reasons for saving them from the plague, they might not look at Amanda as much of an authority figure, even though she couldn’t help becoming infected herself. They already didn’t have much faith in her after taking over for Nicky and something like this could tip the scales even further and make her reelection trickier than she expected/hopes it to be. Could the balance of power in Defiance be shifting before our very eyes?

Defiance 1.08 Preview: Nolan Discovers an Astronaut

As was mentioned previously on Defiance, the reason the citizens of the boom-town are still so fragmented is due to the desire to preserve customs from their home planets. With the Votan invasion happening decades ago, the amount of Defiance residents who have firsthand knowledge of the way life was before the Earth becoming terraformed is growing smaller each day; to keep that information alive, each alien race, as well as what humans remain, has embraced their identities that much more and with that, the mores and unique traditions that make them who they are. But what happens when Defiance is confronted by someone who knew how things were back in 2013?

On the next episode of Defiance, Nolan and Tommy discover an American astronaut who had been in hypersleep for decades. The man is both a potential boon of knowledge and danger to the citizens of Defiance, as he’s one of the few with experience in a pre-Votan world yet an unknown enough variable to where he might not take to the way the world is now. It’s a lot to have to take in, that you’ve been asleep for decades and nearly everything and everybody you know and love is gone, and there’s no guarantees he reacts to the immense changes in a way that permits him to stay in Defiance. However, should he come to peace with what’s transpired since he was last conscious, he could become quit a resource for Defiance and someone who contributes a lot to the year 2046.

Will the astronaut bring the citizens of Defiance any type of knowledge or understanding about the way the world once was? Is he going to be able to survive on a planet that looks drastically different than what he’s used to? How will his discovery impact the rest of the town and the way they view their current way of life?

Defiance 1.07 Preview: A Razor Rain Storm is Coming

In the world of 2046, cities are a lot more insular than they are now. Whereas 2013 is marked by how quickly information is transmitted and how easy travel has become, places like Defiance have had to rely on its citizens rather than the outside world in order to survive. This may make them better as individuals, sharpening their skill sets and allowing them to grow closer to their community, but it makes any disaster that much more nerve-wracking. Is now the time when they’d actually need some important backup? Would they be able to survive using only their wits, the resources around town, and little else?

On the next episode of Defiance, the citizens of Defiance have been forced indoors by a deadly Razor Rain storm, thereby putting them in close quarters with one another until it passes. While this likely won’t be much of a problem for most, as long as they have proper food, shelter, and weaponry available, it will force certain relationships to develop perhaps before they’re ready. In turn, truths will be prematurely sussed out, threatening several preexisting connections in town and potentially changing the way things have been for quite some time. Defiance is a town that operates best when things are calm and the status quo is unchallenged, as tradition and normalcy have been in limited quantity since the Votan invasion; however, there are times when change can’t be avoided and it looks like they’ll have to adjust accordingly once the last of the Razor Rain subsides. But just how different will things be after the rain?

Elsewhere on Defiance, Irisa is led back to the Spirit Riders, including an obviously affected Sukar, thanks to visions she’s been having.

Defiance returns with new episodes Monday, June 3rd at 9:00 on Syfy.

Defiance Marathon to Air Saturday, May 25th on Syfy

As there’s no new episode on May 27th due to Memorial Day weekend, Syfy will be airing a Defiance catch-up marathon on Saturday, May 25th, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The series, taking place on a terraformed Earth in a boomtown named Defiance (located where St. Louis currently stands), has been a big hit for the network, debuting as Syfy’s most watched scripted series premiere in nearly a decade. Among those featured are Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Mia Kirshner, Jaime Murray, and Tony Curran.

Listed below are the dates, times, titles, and descriptions for each of the first six episodes of Defiance, which will be played from the beginning again at 11:00 p.m. the same night.

Saturday, May 25th, 4:00 p.m. – “Pilot”
The arrival of the mysterious Nolan and his charge Irisa to the town of Defiance marks a threat to the fragile peace that exists between the residents in the premiere of this futuristic drama, which is set in the year 2046, more than 30 years following a war between humans and aliens that left Earth forever changed.

Saturday, May 25th, 6:00 p.m. – “Down in the Ground Where the Dead Men Go”
A killer is pursued; at the same time, Nolan and Datak come to blows over an ancient ritual.

An old war buddy catches up with Nolan at the same time a Castithan criminal with a history of violence enters the picture.

Defiance returns with new episodes Monday, June 3rd at 9:00 on Syfy. The show has already been renewed for a second season, which will premiere in 2014.

Defiance Renewed for Season 2 by Syfy

Syfy has officially renewed Defiance for a 13-episode second season, which is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2014. The show will resume production in Toronto this August.

“Bringing the rich world of Defiance to life has been in incredible team effort. We couldn’t ask for better partners than Kevin Murphy, his amazing cast and crew, and Trion Worlds,” said Mark Stern, President of Original Content for Syfy and Co-Head of Original Content for UCP. “We can’t wait to see where they take us in the second season.”

Taking place on a terra formed Earth decades into the future, Defiance centers on the town of Defiance, which sits atop what was once St. Louis. The boomtown, featuring a cross-section of the seven alien races that invaded Earth all those years ago, is also home to a a human drifter and his adopted daughter, who put down roots and try to build a stable life for themselves. However, things aren’t as stable as they would be in town, with its new Mayor, cultural clashes, and constant violence, so as much as they make like having a new home, it’s going to take some time for them to feel safe. Considering how long they spent in the Badlands, though, the drifter-turned-lawman and his daughter are as well-prepared as they can be for the carnage to come.

The audience for its April 15 premiere was the second largest series premiere in the network’s history among adults 18-49, making it the biggest in nearly nine years in that coveted demographic, based on Live +7 Data. The premiere also delivered almost 4 million viewers (3,834,000) and has quickly become Syfy’s highest-rated original series this year in adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and total viewers.

Airing Mondays at 9:00 on Syfy, Defiance stars Grant Bowler, Julie Benz, Mia Kirshner, Tony Curran, Jaime Murray, Stephanie Leonidas, and Graham Greene.
