The Client List Cancelled by Lifetime

Deadline is reporting that Lifetime has officially cancelled Jennifer Love Hewitt-starring drama The Client List after two seasons. However, the reason for the show’s conclusion has nothing to do with ratings, though those did decline a bit during the second season. The decision came after Love Hewitt, an executive producer on the program that was adapted from the Lifetime movie she headlined, and the network were at odds over the direction of the third season. After becoming pregnant, she wanted Brian Hallisay, who plays Kyle on the show and who is the father of her baby in real life, to be the father of her character Riley’s third child; however, Lifetime and Sony TV wants Colin Egglesfield, who plays Kyle’s brother Evan, to be the father.

Though the drama first erupted in June, the decision comes after the network managed to launch two new hits in Devious Maids, already renewed for a second season, and Witches of East End, whose ratings went up this past Sunday. The network has already given Drop Dead Diva a sixth season after bringing the show back from cancellation and has several new projects in the pipeline, including HR starring Alicia Silverstone, so the two sides simply ran out of scheduling space and time to reach a decision. Had either side relented in the standoff as late as the past couple of months, a third season of The Client List would have been guaranteed, but once Witches of East End had a solid launch and the network held up during the extremely competitive fall period, there was no reason to keep the show around and deal with the headache of the creative differences.

The Client List 2.08 Preview: Riley is Racked with Guilt

Riley made a decision last week on The Client List that will stick with her for a time to come. When faced with an offer to sleep with handsome single dad Dylan for $50,000, she initially found herself morally opposed to the idea, considering that it was a line that she didn’t want to cross and turn herself into something she didn’t want to be. However, financial pressures ultimately got the best of her and she ended up going through with the act, which will end up paying for electrical repairs at The Rub, Linette’s rehab, and testing for Travis’ learning disability, among other things. But now that the incident is over and Dylan is in Hong Kong for at least the next six months, has Riley absolved herself of the guilt from going through with it?

On the next episode of The Client List, Riley is wracked with guilt from her time with Dylan, both for the moral aspect of it and the fact that technically, she cheated on Kyle. No one in her life would bat an eyelash at the idea of Riley moving on and finding someone new after everything Kyle put her through, but we’ve seen from how she dealt with the Evan situation that Riley is holding on tightly to her wedding vows and doesn’t want to do anything that would hurt her husband or her kids. To absolve herself of the internal guilt, she goes to church with Lacey and Georgia, but will she find it within herself to confess what she did? If so, how would Lacey and Georgia react to the news?

Elsewhere on The Client List, Evan goes on his first date with Shelby, while Kyle prepares the testify with some guidance from his lawyer and Selena warns Derek about Lisa, inadvertently revealing something about herself in the process.

The Client List airs Sundays at 10:00 on Lifetime.

The Client List 2.07 Preview: Will Riley Cross the Line?

Thus far in her time at The Rub, Riley has been very conscious of how far she was willing to go with a client. While she never judged other girls for what they did in the privacy of their rooms, Riley wasn’t one to entertain the idea of going farther for more money, seeing as how she can easily rationalize what she does now as massages with something extra for a select few men. She doesn’t get naked, the list is exclusive (and secret) enough to where she feels safe, and a lot of her time in the room is spent helping the guys she sees through their problems rather than performing favors. But considering her financial situation at home, with Kyle in prison and Linette laid up, would she put aside her previous boundaries in the name of paying the bills and supporting the ones she loves?

On the next episode of The Client List, Riley has received an offer from a handsome, wealthy single dad of $50,000 to sleep with her. It’d be quite a boost for her household to have that kind of money, taking a lot of pressure off of her and giving her room to breathe for the first time in a while. However, Riley has to make peace with the morality of what she’s doing and confront whether or not she’d be okay with herself for accepting the offer, financial help or not; if she doesn’t think she’d be able to live with herself in the aftermath or that doing this once would be opening up a Pandora’s Box that she doesn’t want to deal with, it might be best for her to politely decline and continue on her current path.

Elsewhere on The Client List, Kyle loses inmate privileges following a fight with another prisoner, while The Rub experiences a blackout and Georgia teams with Lacey to throw a baby shower for Dale’s sister.

The Client List airs Sunday at 10:00 on Lifetime.

The Client List 2.06 Preview: Is Riley Pondering a Career Change?

In the whirlwind life of Riley Parks, there’s very little down time and even less pleasure for pleasure’s sake. She may get to sneak in an indulgence here and a run by herself there, but most of the time, she’s running from one responsibility to the next, always having something to worry about and another thing to have to fix. Even if she wanted to carve out time for herself or explore one of her passions, when would she be able to do it?

On tonight’s episode of The Client List, Riley finds herself with an opportunity for something she had long since given up. One of her clients has a connection to a big time music agent, thus getting her to reconsider her dream of singing professionally. Having gotten pregnant at a young age, there’s not been much on Riley’s mind in recent years but providing a stable environment for her family; it’s the entire reason she decided to take on more at The Rub, or even work there in the first place, so now that she’s righted the ship following Kyle’s disappearance, it should be interesting to see how much credence she gives this notion of performing. A part of her will always love being out on stage and feeling the spotlight hit her, as we saw last week during her performance with Katie, but is this something she’s going to want to pursue on a regular basis? Or now that she has a full plate and a family to think about, is this dream arriving a little too late to be feasible?

Elsewhere on The Client List, Lacey is suspicious that Dale’s been living a secret life, while Kyle encounters trouble from a fellow inmate, Evan gets closer to Shelby, and Selena teases Derek about the frequency of massages booked by his client Lisa.

The Client List 2.05 Preview: Riley’s Secret is Out

Riley Parks has been carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders and eventually, it was bound to cause her to stumble. In addition to managing The Rub, including hiring new employees, handling a police probe, and expanding its client base, she’s had to parent two children, console her best friend through fertility difficulties, take care of an injured mother, and try to keep her husband from going to jail after being involved in a Mexican drug cartel. Not to mention the fact that she’s currently keeping secrets from everyone in her life and has to hear about the inner workings of her clients, who themselves are hiding things from the ones they love. Riley may be a strong woman who has proven to have more guile than even she expected, but what happens when one of her many secrets accidentally comes out – to her children?

On tonight’s episode of The Client List, Katie saw Riley and Evan kissing and she informs pretty much everyone in the extended Parks family sans Kyle. Granted, Lacey and Linette both knew that Riley had a thing for Evan and that the two were in that weird gray area between being officially together and being more than friends, but Riley wanted to keep her dating life out of her childrens’ minds, especially since Kyle is still locked away. The last thing she’d want for them to feel is that she was replacing their father and that they’d never get to see him again, so this might lead to a brief pause in the development of her relationship with Evan. However, considering that he became quite friendly with Shelby during his police academy training, Riley might want to think about making a move before someone else stakes their claim on Evan Parks first.

Elsewhere on The Client List, a co-ed locker room makes for awkward encounters between Derek and Selena, while Riley has a 18-year-old virgin on her table, Travis begins acting up in school, and Lacey visits a fertility specialist with Dale.

The Client List 2.04 Preview: Will the New Hires Endanger The Rub?

Riley took a huge risk in hiring new people to work at The Rub without Georgia’s input. It’s one thing to manage to day-to-day activities and keep the appointment schedule, but it’s a whole other beast to entrust the security of the business to those you haven’t met and vetted out before. At least Georgia had been in the game long enough to trust her instincts and be able to sniff out an untrustworthy applicant; Riley’s gut has been clouded by an increasingly complicated personal life and financial pressure to keep The Rub open, so is there a chance that either Derek or Nikki will turn out to be poor hires? Could The Rub be in trouble due to Riley’s decision-making?

On tonight’s episode of The Client List, both Derek and Nikki are under the microscope for two very different reasons. Selena, no longer the big dog at The Rub, has had it out for Nikki since Riley hired her and uses the young girl’s checkered past against her when she accuses her of stealing. Having someone younger working alongside her is ultimately bad for Selena’s business, which boomed following the loss of Kendra, Dee Ann, and Jolene, and she’ll do anything necessary to push Nikki out of the picture for good. Of course, Selena is also the only member of the staff to be performing other favors for members on the client list, so unless Nikki begins turning tricks in her room, too, the longest tenured member of The Rub won’t have much to worry about regarding her customer base.

Meanwhile, Derek is said to be holding onto a secret that could bring The Rub down, potentially for good. While there are a number of things that it could be (a law enforcement past/connection, for example), Riley will have to decide if it’s bad enough to warrant a dismissal. Considering the shallow pool of masseurs that she had to choose from, it would have to be something pretty extreme for her to fire Derek, but above all else, Riley has to protect herself and the business that Georgia is trusting her with.

Elsewhere on The Client List, Riley receives an unusual request from a football player client who likes to push boundaries.

The Client List 2.03 Preview: Riley Hires a Male Masseuse

This season on The Client List, Riley Parks is discovering that, try as she might, she can’t do everything herself. Her intentions in wanting to parent her children, manage the Rub, help Kyle get a better lawyer, and be fully invested in a relationship with Evan are noble; Riley’s a good person and wants to do what she can to help other people be happy. But she’s not Superwoman and the longer that she neglects herself, the harder it’ll be to continue at the pace she’s on. It’s okay to ask for help and it’s okay for her to take a breath every now and then, given how much she’s responsible for nowadays. Will Riley ever learn to embrace the idea of doling out tasks and leaning on another person?

On tonight’s episode of The Client List, Riley has hired a male masseuse to reach a different clientele and relieve some of the pressure from herself, Selena, and Nikki. There’s additional motivation for stocking up the Rub since Linette is still recovering from her car accident; currently, she’s living at home with Riley and out of action at the salon, meaning that Riley is now providing for three dependents rather than just the two. More masseurs leads to more clients and more clients leads to more money for the Rub, which can only help Riley’s financial difficulties. But considering everything that’s gone on recently, can she handle a setback like this? Or has Riley’s skin grown thicker ever since taking control of her family and facing her problems head-on?

Elsewhere on The Client List, a veteran client needs more than Riley can handle, while Evan takes on a dangerous job to help Riley pay the bills and Kyle’s mistakes continue to haunt the Parks household.

The Client List Promo: Watch Jennifer Love Hewitt’s New Music Video

The Client List will pick up its second season with Riley in between a rock and a hard place. Much of the first season found the mother of two figuring out how to balance her chaotic home life with a flourishing professional life down at The Rub and despite a few hiccups along the way, she managed to get the hang of her new life. It’s not exactly the life that she envisioned herself having, but it’s the one she has with Kyle gone and she’s grown more comfortable in her role as family provider. But what happens when everything she’s come to know as normal post-Kyle gets shaken up?

Kyle coming home has wrecked any sense of stability she might have built up during the course of the first season. He’s still a volatile character who Riley has to tip toe around in order to get anything done and he’s managed to put a pin in any chance she had of exploring her feelings for Evan, the man who stepped up when Kyle left and helped Riley get on her feet. Riley overcame a lot during the first season and found a strength that she didn’t know she had, a strength that she’ll need come season two. With Kyle home and The Rub giving her more responsibility, her life is about to get even more difficult, although something tells me that with her support system (Evan, Lacey, Georgia, Linette), she’ll be able to pull through and then some.

The Client List returns for its 15-episode second season on Sunday, March 10th at 10:00 on Lifetime. It’ll follow the seventh season premiere of Army Wives, which has had notable cast turnover during its most recent off-season.
