The decision isn’t much of a surprise, considering that it took four months for the network to come to a decision about the show’s fate. ABC Family had a similar delay for Bunheads and The Lying Game last summer, a delay they said was to due to wanting to see how their new summer shows did, with the same result – both veterans were cancelled while then-newcomers Twisted and The Fosters received episode extensions.

Twisted was also hamstrung by the fact that Ravenswood failed to take off in the fall. Rather than get to air the second half of its season with its fellow mystery series, the series had its season 1B debut delayed one month and had to air episodes without an original lead-in, leading its ratings to plummet. With the delay likely pushing any new episodes of Twisted into 2015, Avan Jogia taking the lead role in an upcoming Spike TV miniseries, and three promising pilots in development, ABC Family opted to take the ratings weakness they saw as gospel and end the series without a concrete finale.

Created by Adam Milch, Twisted followed 16-year-old Danny Desai (Jogia), a boy sent to juvenile hall for five years following the death of his aunt, which he was blamed for. Once he returns to his hometown, he doesn’t exactly receive a welcoming reception, though he ultimately wins back his two best friends and looks to live the life that was taken away from him. In addition to Jogia, Twisted starred Maddie Hasson, Kylie Bunbury, Ashton Moio, and Denise Richards.

The final episode of Twisted aired this past April.

Kyle’s investigation culminates with a series of shocking and contradictory confessions and potentially deadly consequences. And Rico makes a major faux pas in his first meeting with Andie’s parents.

On the season finale of Twisted, Kyle brings Charlie out to the crime scene and asks him about the night Vikram’s body was found. Charlie tells him about being in the woods out of concern for Danny and witnessing Vikram being knocked off the cliff, but his demeanor isn’t doing him any favors, as he can barely open his eyes and his speech slurs a bit more than it should. Whether that be the result of his self-inflicted injury or some other factor that drives him to become almost a totally different person, it’s perhaps the worst timing Charlie could have asked for; he thought that he was charming Jo into believing every word out of his mouth, but now that she told the truth and he’s in the cross-hairs of the Green Grove Police, he has to be at 100% if he has any hope of continuing to fool them into believing his innocence. Since he’s not, though, it’s only a matter of time before Kyle comes across the truth about the accident scene on his own.

Elsewhere on Twisted, Whitney’s mother shows up in Green Grove with the intention of bringing her daughter home, while Rico makes a faux pas during his first meeting with Andie’s parents and a critical piece of evidence could spell trouble for Tess and the Masterson family.

On the next episode of Twisted, Lacey struggles with how exactly the approach the situation with Whitney. Though she wants to be a good friend to the new girl in Green Grove, she doesn’t want her to get the wrong idea or to let her on into thinking that there’s a chance of something romantic happening between them. There’s also the fact that Whitney has shown herself to be quite manipulative and that her gestures toward Lacey might be less genuine expressions of how she feels and more calculated moves to get what she wants. Of course, Lacey doesn’t know about this side of Whitney, but she needs to be careful about trusting anyone in Green Grove right now, not when she finds secrets and ulterior motives around every corner she turns.

On the next episode of Twisted, Danny confronts Charlie about Jo knowing of his wishes to kill his father, a story that hasn’t been completely told and likely won’t be able to be told since Jo is now refusing to associate with Danny. But while Danny is upset at Jo shutting him out, he’s more upset about Charlie being the source of the tension between the two, as he feels like his old roommate is deliberately manipulating his (former?) best friend and driving a wedge between them for his own selfish gain. Charlie knows that Jo is insecure and vulnerable, so rather than pray on Lacey like he was seemingly planning to earlier this season, he decided to go for her and try to mess up Danny’s limited social circle as best he could. Granted, Danny’s at fault for not being more honest with Jo to begin with and Jo’s at fault for not thinking critically enough about what Charlie told her (e.g. was Danny just blowing off steam or speaking figuratively?), but Charlie is the source of much of the trouble in Green Grove and with Danny and Jo on the outs, he might have already achieved his ultimate goal in coming to town.

Elsewhere on Twisted, Whitney’s wild side begins rubbing off on Lacey, while Karen gives Danny advice on moving on with his life and Kyle turns his suspicions toward Jack.

On the next episode of Twisted, fallout from Danny’s confession to Karen begins, but it’s not Karen who comes down hardest on him. While she reveals that she had nothing to do with the body being moved and the accident being staged, instead pointing the finger at Jack, it’s Jo who delivers the strongest blow against Danny when she reveals that she wants to try living her life without him. She’s getting closer to Charlie and putting herself out there by doing things like Homecoming committee and she doesn’t want to be around for any other Danny drama to develop, especially not when she knows that he and Lacey are trying to make things work romantically. Jo  was roped back into Danny’s life after everything that happened with Vikram, but now that that’s over, it seems that Danny has not only lost a father out in those woods, he lost a friend, too.

On the next episode of Twisted, Jo runs into Charlie at the diner the morning after the Homecoming dance. As much as she might view him as a welcome distraction from the chaos that her life has become recently, there’s the fact that he has a huge secret that Danny is keeping and that he seems to have targeted both her and Lacey upon his arrival in Green Grove. Him approaching her at the dance and working hard to make her smile was less about a budding attraction or finding somebody to spend time with and more about an ulterior motive, possibly revenge against Danny for something that happened while they were behind bars. Jo may need some type of comfort and refuge at a time when the walls are closing in on her, but in getting closer to Charlie, she’ll only make things more difficult for herself and put herself in more danger.

On the next episode of Twisted, it’s revealed that Danny and Charlie know each other from the past, as the two bunked together in juvenile hall. Since Danny would go on about his former life, including his friends, Charlie thought that when he was released, Green Grove deserved to be checked out, even though Danny isn’t exactly welcoming him with open arms. In fact, Danny wants nothing more to do with that aspect of his life, not after what happened with Vik in the woods, but he’s going to have a tough time moving on when a living, breathing embodiment of the five years he wasted in juvenile hall is parading around town. Danny’s already having enough trouble dealing with his father’s death, but could Charlie be more actively threatening than a simple reminder of a time he would like to forget?

Due to Danny saving her on the cliff, Jo wants to return the favor by getting him out of Green Grove as quickly as possible. He knows that no one is going to believe their story about what actually happened, not when the police are already after him for another murder, and that the only chance he has of starting his life over would be to leave the town. Even if he went and turned himself into Kyle the second after Vik fell, there would be no way anyone in town would believe him, since they know Jo has a reason to protect him and Regina’s murder still hasn’t been solved. Should Danny choose to hide out until the true killer of Regina has been found, or at least until Marilyn’s credibility has been destroyed by Kyle, there’s a chance that he could one day be able to walk through the streets of Green Grove without garnering the type of gawking that he’s had to deal with thus far. Until then, though, he’ll need to lay low and hope that the justice system can give him the break that he’s due.

Elsewhere on Twisted, Lacey becomes convinced of a link between Gloria and Vikram, while Karen questions the wisdom of allowing Jack back into her life and Mayor Rollins becomes the latest name connected to Regina’s murder.
