VH1 has announced that they’ve acquired all 57 episodes of Happy Endings and will begin airing them Tuesday, December 31st at 8:00 in a series-long marathon. The critically acclaimed comedy, which was canceled this past May after three seasons, will then settle into a new home of Wednesdays 7:00-9:00 beginning January 8th. Episodes of the series will also be available on the network’s TV Everywhere platforms and the VH1 app.

“Happy Endings is one of our favorite network series, and we consider ourselves lucky to be able to add it to the VH1 line-up. The show’s authentic voice, memorable characters, and smart humor really stands out, and we’re really pleased to be able to provide new platforms for viewers to enjoy it over and over. Lots of times,” stated Ben Zurier, Executive Vice President, Programming, VH1.

It’s an unexpected development for the cult comedy, both in terms of finding a network for syndication and that network being VH1. The show dropped so precipitously in the ratings during its third season and ended up with few enough episodes to where syndication didn’t look as likely, but with VH1 in the market for scripted content and looking to expand beyond the nighttime soaps they’ve created, it seems like a fairly decent fit; VH1 has a decidedly female-skewing audience that could take to the rhythms, pop culture knowledge, and humor of Happy Endings and the show gets to be exposed to an audience who might not have watched it while it was on ABC. VH1 gets to dip its toe in the comedy arena without making the huge investment of developing something scripted on its own and if Happy Endings does well enough, the network could even build a comedy mini-bloc out of the show.

Do you think that Happy Endings will flourish in syndication? Are you surprised that the show got a syndication deal more than six months after being cancelled and far short of the traditional 88-episode benchmark? Would the show doing well for VH1 influence the network to pursue more scripted content?

ABC has scheduled the two episodes of Happy Endings that were displaced, one where Penny moves on from Pete with another guy and another where Max tries to get his life together with Jane’s help, for this coming Friday, April 26th. As a result of the bump, the Happy Endings third season finale is now set for Friday, May 3rd at 8:00 and 8:30.

-Mario Lopez will be returning for the third season of The X Factor, slated to premiere this fall. His season two co-host Khloe Kardashian-Odom, meanwhile, has gone the way of Steve Jones and won’t be returning.

-History’s Bonnie & Clyde miniseries has started production in Baton Rouge. Starring Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) and Holliday Grainger (The Borgias), the event tells the story of intuitive criminal Clyde Barrow, fame hungry Bonnie Parker and the rest of the notorious Barrow Gang as they swept through the Central United States committing small-time robberies and daring bank heists and will be simulcast on History and Lifetime later this year.

-Comedy Central has officially canceled Futurama ahead of its June 19th summer premiere date. The series finale is set for September 4th and will cap off a summer season with guest stars ranging from Larry Bird and Burt Ward to Sarah Silverman and George Takei. Producers are reportedly exploring other options to keep the series alive.

-Ahead of Lost Girl‘s third season finale tonight, Syfy has launched Lost Girl: The Game, a free mobile gaming app available for download on iOS and Android devices. The game, written by the show’s writers, allows players to create a customized Fae character that they can use to venture through the world of Lost Girl, including creating their own avatars, embarking on missions and uncovering hidden objects, in order to score points and unlock levels.

-USA has ordered five additional Psych scripts, which would bring the eighth season total to 13. However, script orders don’t always translate to episode orders, though the sleuth dramedy has been performing very well since its winter premiere.

-At their upfront presentation today, E! unveiled an extensive programming slate of both scripted and unscripted content. Set to premiere this year are The Wanted Life, a docuseries about British boy band The Wanted (June 2nd); Total Divas, following a group of WWE divas outside the ring (July 28th); Pop Innovators, an interview show that celebrates the most influential names in pop culture – in their own words; The Soup Investigates, a spinoff of The Soup that finds Joel McHale and a series of reporters delving into various pop culture mysteries; Hello Ross, an interactive talk show led by Ross Mathews; and The Trend, featuring a team of experts talking all things design, fashion, and beauty.

Among the subjects for unscripted programming are wine families of Sonoma; female poker players; real estate agents; and paparazzi. Scripted development includes Laurel Canyon, a drama from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage that centers on a young woman returning to her dysfunctional family in Laurel Canyon with her son after hearing her rock-star legend father has passed away; Songbyrd, about a young songwriter with an unsatisfactory love life and featuring the songs and experience of prolific songwriter Diane Warren; Expectations, a soap about a morally corrupt family in the diamond business; Dirty/Pretty, a dark comedy about a blue collar guy from south Boston who gets scouted to be a model in Miami; and Fortunate Son, following a society golden boy turned criminal informant.

Previously only mentioned in passing, Brooke Kerkovich is the missing piece of the family, whose dynamic was explored earlier this season. Judging by the season three finale episode description, though, the reason she’s not involved in the lives of Alex and Jane is less about animosity toward her sisters and more about Jane not being able to handle someone even more of a perfectionist than she is. Will Brooke’s visit with her equally perfect fiance Eliot, who Brad can’t deal with, help or hurt her relationship with her sisters? Are the Kerkovich sisters bound for a reunion, provided Jane can get it together?

Listed below are the dates, times, titles, and descriptions for the final six episodes of this season of Happy Endings.

Friday, April 12th – “She Got Game Night” (8:00)
Brad and Jane host a couples game night with Penny, Pete, Max and Scotty and the competitiveness gets a little out of hand, prompting Penny to make an unexpected move. Meanwhile Dave has a big decision to make on the career front, and Alex tries to help but they end up at a psychic instead.

Friday, April 12th – “The Storm Before the Calm” (8:30)
Penny insists that she’s fine after her breakup with Pete, but the gang begin to wonder when she writes a play entitled “Black Plague: A Love Story” and asks Derrick (guest star Stephen Guarino) and his theater group to stage it. They brace for “drama” in more ways than one. Meanwhile a marketing group asks Alex and Max to be tastemakers, but is it a scam?

Friday, April 19th – “The Ballad of Lon Sarofsky” (8:00)
The gang is shocked when Penny rebounds from her breakup with Pete by having a torrid affair with the last man on earth they’d pick for her — the Car Czar (Rob Corddry). To make matters worse, she’s temporarily living with Brad and Jane, who end up acting like disapproving parents. Meanwhile the friends pressure Max to get a job so he’ll stop sponging off them. He decides to enter the “Mr. Gay Gay Chicago” pageant, with Alex and Dave as his coaches.

Friday, April 19th – “Un-sabotagable” (8:30)
Chase (guest star Mark-Paul Gosselaar), the ex-roommate whose life Max ruined, says he’d like to take revenge and do the same thing to Max, but Max’s life is so pathetic it’s “un-sabotagable.” Max vows to prove him wrong and asks Jane to help him get his act together. Meanwhile, Alex asks the rest of the gang for help when Dave challenges her to finally use her stockpile of Groupons.

Friday, April 26th – “Deuce Babylove 2: Electric Babydeuce” (8:00)
Penny’s mom, Dana, and Dave’s dad, Big Dave, are in town visiting, and these two lovebirds are not only going strong, they’ve decided to adopt a baby together, prompting Penny and Dave to react the only way they know how – irrationally. Meanwhile, Brad and Jane want some time just to themselves and decide to try to join an exclusive tennis club, but unfortunately Max is on the scent and they can’t shake him or Alex.

Friday, April 26th – “Brothas & Sisters” (8:30 – season finale)
The third Kerkovich sister, Brooke (guest star Stephanie March), is the alpha sister of the group, and Jane has the daunting task of planning a wedding for her more perfect and exquisite older sibling. Meanwhile, Brad is having a tough time himself dealing with Brooke’s equally more perfect African American fiance, Elliot (guest star James Lesure), and Alex and Dave have a big secret they’re hiding.

Happy Endings airs Fridays at 8:00 and 8:30 on ABC.

The two balance one another out, with Pete keeping her grounded and Penny bringing him out of his shell, and barring the odd sleep text or random quirk, things are going well. However, once Happy Endings returns, Penny decides to reach out to her estranged father in hopes of rekindling their relationship and getting him to walk her down the aisle. Is she only setting herself up for disappointment or will Penny Hartz finally be able to depend on the first man in her life?

Listed below are the dates, titles, and descriptions of the next four episodes of Happy Endings, the first since January.

Friday, March 29th – “In the Heat of the Noche” (8:00)
Brad uses his skills, plus help from the gang, to prop up Chuckles and Huggs after the gym’s loopy owner, Terry (guest star David Alan Grier), tells him it may be closing. Meanwhile, Penny and Max try to break the habit of texting the men in their lives (Pete/the new guy Max is dating). They turn to NocheTussin, a black market cough medicine, to help them sleep when they’d normally be texting.

Friday, March 29th – “The Straight Dope” (8:30)
Max meets a cute girl who is a season tickets holder for the Bulls, leaving him no choice but to pretend to be straight, of course! Meanwhile, Alex is tired of everyone dismissing her as the dimwitted blonde, so she becomes well read to prove them wrong. However her newfound knowledge completely throws the whole group dynamic off and no one likes it.

Friday, April 5th – “The Incident” (8:00)
When Max tries out Jane and Alex’s long-time hairdresser, Krisjahn (guest star RuPaul), he gets some good salon gossip on the girls, but his loose lips may cause World War III between the Kerkovitch sisters. Meanwhile, the Steak Me Home truck is stolen and Dave and Penny try to figure out whodunit — but are perplexed by what they find when they finally locate the thief.

Friday, April 5th – “Bros Before Bros” (8:30)
With the wedding coming up, Penny decides to reach out to her estranged dad Roy (guest star Andy Richter). The reunion is sufficiently awkward but Alex encourages Penny to be optimistic, while Jane is more skeptical. Meanwhile, Dave enlists Brad and Max’s help in sabotaging “The Brazilian” food truck, a.k.a. Dave’s #1 nemesis, but Max accidentally falls for the enemy’s son and has to choose between his best friend or boyfriend.

Happy Endings returns from its two-month hiatus Friday, March 29th at 8:00 on ABC.

Or, for that matter, the Year of Happy Endings.

ABC announced that it will be moving Happy Endings to Friday nights for the remainder of the season. The show, which last aired an original episode January 29th, assumes the time slots vacated by Last Man Standing and Malibu Country on March 29th, as both will have aired their season finales by that point. There are 10 episodes remaining in the third season of the critically loved, little watched ensemble comedy, meaning there will be five weeks of doubled-up new episodes that culminate in a season (series?) finale on April 26th.

Replacing Happy Endings on Tuesday nights will be Celebrity Wife Swap; featuring two celebrities swapping lives to see how the other lives, the show will premiere Tuesday, February 26th at 8:00, bumping The Taste to 9:00. Body of Proof will remain in the 10:00 slot for its 13-episode third season, which will get a boost once Dancing with the Stars returns in March.

The third season of Happy Endings has seen a series of obstacles that have come between it and ratings success. Not having premiered until late October, the show ran into a logjam of like-minded niche comedies fighting for the same audience, resulting in none of them doing particularly well. An experimental airing on Sundays was purported to be about helping the comedy get sampled, but when ratings didn’t improve, it was cut and kept strictly on Tuesdays. The cancellation of nightmate Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23 allowed Happy Endings to double up on new episodes, but thanks to big numbers for The Bachelor on Tuesdays and the State of the Union address, it only got the chance to do this one time before being yanked.

And now it’s on Friday nights and will have to deal with a two-month hiatus. While the show will get to air all 23 episodes in its current season order, the slim chances for survival have been diminished by the move. You could argue that cult shows have managed to keep afloat on Fridays, but those tend to be genre shows (i.e. Fringe) and not comedies. The only things that could potentially help Happy Endings reach a fourth season, then, are syndication (which it’ll be about 30 episodes away from by May) and poor comedy development from ABC.

Will you be following Happy Endings to Friday nights? Do you think that the show will be able to survive on Fridays or will its already small audience collapse as a result?

ABC is offering up a double dose of Happy Endings each week this winter with new episodes on both Sundays and Tuesdays, making tonight’s episode the second one this week (you’ll have to catch Sunday’s “Foul Play/Date” on the ABC app). This means, it’s time to rush back to your DVR and reprogram it…stat!

On tonight’s Happy Endings, a popular young pop star makes a stop at Alex’s store and buys one of her dresses. Penny convinces here that she needs to seize the opportunity to gain some publicity; however, it turns out that the old adage that “All press is good press” may not exactly be true.

Jane and Derrick decide to take Max, who is in the middle of an identity crisis, on a tour of Chicago’s themed gay bars. Dave and Brad make the decision to be more “manly” and go on a hunt to fix things around the house.

Can’t wait to watch tonight’s episode of Happy Endings? Get a sneak peek at “Ordinary Extraordinary Love” below.

Happy Endings airs Sundays 10/9c and Tuesdays 9/8c on ABC.

That’s right, the bird who spends his time in Alex’s store has flown the coop, but which of the six friends is responsible for the death of parrot racism?

On the next episode of Happy Endings, Brad and Penny accidentally break one of Alex’s favorite childhood mementos and have to rush to put it back together before she returns home from a trip. They do manage to fix what they destroyed, only the glue fumes from their project proved to be too much for Tyler and killed Alex’s pet. As expected, the two immediately panic and attempt to come up with a plausible reason why Tyler would have died. They seem to settle on the bird, whose wings are clipped, attempting to fly out the window and then falling to his death, but can that really work? Will they be able to keep their cool long enough to pull this cover-up off?

Elsewhere on Happy Endings, Jane and Dave try to find the perfect match for Max, who has been feeling a little lonely and left out recently. Things ending with Grant might have ended cordially, but Max really took the break-up to heart, so much so that this will be his first time dating again since Grant. Even though Jane and Dave aren’t the best matchmakers, the act of getting back out there could be the best thing for him and make him more comfortable and confident with the idea of being with someone for the long-term.

Happy Endings returns from winter hiatus Sunday, January 6th at 10:00 on ABC, with another new episode airing in its regular Tuesday time slot. In place of new episodes of 666 Park Avenue, which was cancelled in November, ABC has opted to air original episodes of Happy Endings and Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 on Sundays for three weeks this month.

Can Brad and Penny cover up what they (inadvertently) did to Tyler? Should they have immediately confessed rather than coming up with an elaborate reason why Tyler died? Will Jane and Dave find a guy for Max?

The two shows have been struggling in the ratings this season due to an incongruous lead-in (Dancing with the Stars) and a cluster of sitcoms in the 9:00 hour on Tuesdays (Go On, The New Normal, New Girl, The Mindy Project), so this could be the chance for them to prove their worth with a strong, young-skewing lead-in (Revenge) and no comedy competition in the hour. Networks have been hesitant to go with comedies at 10:00, minus recent brief experiments from ABC and NBC, but good results here might lead them to be more open to it in the future.

Currently, Happy Endings and Don’t Trust the B— are scheduled to leave the ABC line-up in March to make way for another cycle of Dancing with the Stars, with Red Widow taking the Sunday at 10:00 slot earlier in the month. By giving the comedies the Sunday slot for the time being, they’ll either finish airing their entire episode order or come very close, as they’ll also be continuing their run on Tuesday nights beginning on January 8th.

Additionally, the remaining four episodes of 666 Park Avenue are scheduled to air this summer, though no exact premiere date has been announced.

Listed below are the episodes of each that will be airing January 6th, Happy Endings airing at 10:00 and Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23 following at 10:30.

Sunday, January 6th – Happy Endings, “Fowl Play/Date”
After Brad and Penny accidentally break Alex’s beloved childhood memento, they try to glue it back together. But they go from just being clumsy to “birderers” after Tyler, Alex’s racist parrot, keels over and dies from the glue fumes. Can they cover up the crime before Alex returns from her Rom-Com Com? Meanwhile, Jane and Dave try a little too hard to find a match for Max.

Sunday, January 6th – Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, “Paris…”
June is nervous and excited about starting at Harken Financial. Things go surprisingly well, and she even meets an incredibly nice co-worker, Fox Paris. Chloe warns June, though, that she shouldn’t be so trusting and that Fox is probably just keeping her enemies close. Meanwhile, Mark looks to James for help in expressing his newfound feelings for June.

Do you think that ABC is making the right move in giving the comedies a shot behind Revenge? Is this a fair opportunity to help make up for their poor fall performance or is this a burn-off? How have you been enjoying Happy Endings and Don’t Trust the B this season?
