Its first cancellation is Deception, the midseason mystery that starred Meagan Good (Californication) as an undercover cop investigating the death of her childhood friend. The show, reportedly well-liked by the NBC brass, had a modest January premiere behind The Biggest Loser before quickly trending down and finding itself hovering around a 1.0 in the 18-49 demographic.

The only conceivable way that a weak performer like Deception could have snagged an unexpected renewal was if NBC was unhappy with their drama development. By the halfway point of its run, it had lost nearly all of the (soft) buzz it had upon its debut and was pulling in numbers lower than that of Friday staple Grimm, so its cancellation has been pretty certain for quite some time. Still, it’s hard not to be a tiny bit disappointed, seeing as how while the identity of Vivian Bowers’ killer was revealed in the series finale, their motive was still obscure. There are certain reasons that one could think of as to why they did what they did, but given how the show found itself creatively by the end of its run, it would have been much more pleasurable to see those played out on screen.

In addition to Good, Deception starred Tate Donovan (Damages), Victor Garber (Alias), Wes Brown (Hart of Dixie), Ella Rae Peck (Young Adult), and Laz Alonso (Avatar).

Deception wrapped its run on March 18th. You can check out a recap of the series finale here.

Do you think that NBC made the right decision in cancelling Deception? Was there any way that the show could have been a success? Why do you think Vivian’s killer did what they did?

The Vivian Bowers case seemed to be over once Audrey Cruz became the scapegoat for the murder of the infamous socialite. It fit into a nice, pre-packaged narrative that left Bowers Pharmaceutical standing and significantly weakened Kirschner-Sims, particularly in the PR department. Will was going to get a dinner in his honor and all the glory that comes from solving a high profile case like this, while Joanna had a plane ready to take her back to California first thing Monday morning. Crunched for time, she decided to give herself two more days to solve the murder of her best friend and follow the lead she had pinning Haverstock as the culprit.

When she goes to see if Will would listen to her and reopen the case, seeing as how Audrey needed Vivian alive for her plan to work and Bowers Pharmaceuticals to be brought down, he rebuffs her, obviously still ticked off over finding out that she slept with Julian. Without anyone to help, Joanna goes to Senator Haverstock by herself where he reveals that he knew that she was a cop and denies having anything to do with Vivian’s death. He explains that Vivian always came back every time she went off with another man, so Ben Preswick was no threat to him, and he was at a White House dinner the night of the murder, anyway.

Meanwhile, Sofia and Mia are grocery shopping when Wyatt confronts the former; she offers him a bribe to leave her alone for good, but he wants to dismantle every part of her life to pay her back for sending him to prison. When he makes a remark questioning whether or not Robert knew about her turning tricks in the past, she lashes out, throwing items around the store, screaming, and causing a fight to erupt. Sofia and Wyatt land themselves in FBI custody where they’re interrogated by Will. Wyatt tells him about Sofia being the reason he was in prison and questions the death of her father, while Sofia mostly stonewalls him before threatening to call her lawyers.

The witness list that could help put the focus on Sofia is decidedly fallow – mentally disturbed, hookers, crackheads. Joanna spots the man who gave Mia heroin earlier in the season and goes to his home, where she finds out that he’s a father and a husband, in addition to having a job. Through her conversation with him, she deduces that Vivian didn’t die in the motel, meaning that she likely died in the Bowers residence and was placed in the hotel to make it look like a seedy overdose.

Will calls Haverstock in and finds out that Vivian did know about Sofia’s past with Wyatt, which could give the Bowers matriarch the motive to kill her daughter. Outside the party in his honor, Will runs all this by Joanna and the two head into the bar, where Julian gives her a gift – the bracelet that Vivian was wearing the night of her death, the same one found on the cellar floor. Along with Will and Detective Denton, Joanna brainstorms a possible way for someone to move Vivian’s body from the Bowers home to the place her body was found – luggage. It turns out they can use one of the witnesses/contacts after all: the dumpster diver whose apartment Joanna was in earlier this season looking for her ferret.

A fancy rolling suitcase does turn up at his place and looks like something that Sofia could very feasibly be seen carrying without drawing attention to herself.

Saying Goodbye
After being shot at the end of last week’s episode, Sam is on life support and brain dead, meaning that Edward has to pull the plug, according to her wishes. However, he’s pretty much shut down and doesn’t want to listen to any members of his family. He does get an inkling of peace when Will informs him that they’ve caught a member of the Russian mob that matches the description of the man they think shot Sam; once he gets a look at the two-person lineup that includes that man that followed him during a recent episode, he tells Will that he doesn’t recognize either.

That’s because Edward wants to take care of business his way, through going to Naser Krendi and offering to pay $200,000 for one of his men to catch the guy who shot Sam. Later, at the hospital, he has a conversation with Mia where she tells him that he can’t stay on pause forever, not when he has two children depending on him. Although he may be scared of what life will be like without Sam, he can’t life in suspended animation due to fear of the unknown and an unwillingness to move on. Those words sink in quite deep for the Bowers brother, as he says his goodbyes to his wife and then authorizes the hospital to remove her from life support; she passes shortly after.

Edward’s not out of the woods yet, though, since Krendi’s men have found the man responsible for the death of his wife. He goes to their headquarters and tells them to remove the shooter’s hands, leaving his fate up to them. Finally alone and without the burden of the shooter being free, Edward decides to take his children and return to Robert’s home for the time being, until he gets his wits about him and figures out how to be a single parent.

So Who Killed Vivian?
The bag is to head to forensics where it’d be dusted for prints and the like, but Denton keeps it in the trunk of his car and confronts Robert about how the FBI thinks the killer was Sofia. But he doesn’t feel that way and is confirmed to be correct when Mia makes an offhand remark about the night that Vivian died; after having a fight, Sofia turned into a drunken mess that Mia had to put to bed, while Robert grabbed a suitcase and headed out, presumably to stay somewhere else for the night to cool down. Rather than actively seeking vengeance against Audrey Cruz for killing Vivian, he hired Denton to protect his own ass. Robert then tries to convince Denton to make the evidence disappear with promises of career advancement, which Denton agrees to.

The trio of him, Joanna, and Will gets a fourth when Haverstock meets the four of them to confess that he’s going to be named the Attorney General after his bone marrow surgery. As he’s going to be Will’s boss soon, he’s taken on a special interest in the Bowers case and pledges that only the four of them can know that the case has been reopened. Joanna is to move back into the Bowers home.

Additional thoughts and observations:
-“You’re in your 30s. Pick up on some patterns.”
-“I’m the bad guy and you’re whoever you think you are.”
-“Paranoia is underrated in business, I think.”
-Other stuff that happened: Mia gets kidnapped by Wyatt, Beverly outs Robert for killing Catherine to Julian, Sofia (probably) killed her abusive father, and Kyle and Mia made up
-Stuff that didn’t happen: A reasoning provided for why Robert killed Vivian.
-Will may act like he’s super detective around Joanna, but his bitterness about her falling for Julian was really unprofessional. He’s not totally wrong for feeling hurt; it’s just the wrong time to express/harbor it with the investigation still going on. Either let it go or recuse yourself.
-You guys, how great is John Larroquette? It was nice to see him again anyway and he became one of the highlights of the season for me, turning Haverstock from Creepy Creeperson into, arguably, one of the more rootable characters. How great was the whole “If I find out you had anything to do with Vivian’s death, I will grind you into dust”?
-I like how Sofia tried to bribe Will with a country ham. Personally, she could have offered me some stuffing and a little corn and I’d let her walk.
-I know Julian’s super dreamy and all that, but giving your sorta-boo the bracelet your sister wore when she died?
-In the final scene with Kyle and Mia on the phone, I liked how they made it seem like something was going to happen to Kyle (one shot made me think he was going to end up Ben Preswick-ed) and it turns out that Mia became the victim.
-This was the second putting-people-in-luggage plot I’ve seen in the last few days, oddly. The other? FX’s Legit.
-Denton’s kind of stupid, right? It was pretty obvious why Robert hired him to kill Audrey, so he gets no sympathy from me for thinking he was doing something noble.
-Overall, I have to say, Deception surprised me with how enjoyable it became. I liked it from the pilot, but it grew a lot during recent weeks and became the type of soapy delight that should have flourished. It probably would have had it been on another network, but alas, I think this’ll end up being the series finale rather than the season finale.

The Vivian Bowers case has taken several twists and turns this season on Deception, with Robert, Edward, Julian, and Senator Haverstock all having been the prime suspect at some point. Joanna’s off the case for the time being after confessing to sleeping with Julian, but she’s the most knowledgeable person about the Bowers family, especially after spending as much time undercover as she has, and Will will have to swallow his pride to get her back on the job. When she officially returns to duty, just how close will Joanna be to solving the case and figuring out who killed Vivian and brought her back into the destructive Bowers orbit?

On the season finale of Deception, the Bowers case has been reopened and the killer is revealed shortly after. The previous episode pointed at Haverstock being the killer, since he and Vivian were still in contact at the time of her death and he knew about Ben Preswick. Of course, Audrey confessed to taking out Preswick, but she could’ve been lying or working along with Haverstock, who has the motivation to join forces with Kirchner-Sims to take out Robert Bowers. This being a murder mystery, though, there could always (and will likely) be a last-minute surprise that exonerates Haverstock and puts the heat on someone no one’s expecting. Is there a chance that someone like Sofia could have been responsible for the death of Vivian?

Elsewhere on Deception, Edward decides what to do regarding his wife’s condition and vows to seek revenge on those responsible for what happened to her. Ever since he found out about the botched test results and the falsified murder weapon, he’s been wanting to do right and make up for the bad that Robert’s done in the world, so if Robert had something to do with the murder of Sam, Edward will have that much more motivation for revenge.

The season finale of Deception airs tonight at 10:00 on NBC.

Who do you think killed Vivian? How will Joanna react to finding out the identity of the person responsible for killing her (former) best friend? What will Edward decide to do regarding his wife?

It might not have been the smartest decision, but it was one that the two needed to make; Joanna’s been trapped in a life that’s not hers and become extremely lonely as a result, while Julian finds his former flame to be one of the few people he can be himself around. But what happened will have consequences, so would their time together still be worth it the following day?

On the penultimate episode of Deception, Joanna pays the price for giving in to her attraction to Julian when Will boots her off the case. He claims that her testimony is compromised and her objectivity is gone before reminding her that she still has to tell him about who she really is and why she came back to town. All that Joanna has wanted since she came back to her hometown is to find justice for Vivian and after putting herself in harm’s way for months on end, she might not get a chance to do that and to have that victory. It especially hurts that they’re so close to catching the person/people who murdered Vivian and that Joanna won’t get a chance to close the deal.

While it was inappropriate and unethical for her to sleep with Julian during the investigation, Will’s hurt feelings and jealousy toward Julian make it hard to fully rail against what she did. Joanna may have been wrong, but Will’s no angel in this situation, taking his best asset and the one link to the Bowers family off the case over something that happened in their personal life.

Elsewhere on Deception, Julian agrees to work with the FBI and wears a wire to gain evidence against Audrey, while Edward turns himself in for the murder of Kimberly Yaeger, Wyatt is released from prison, and Mia donates her bone marrow to Haverstock.

Deception airs Mondays at 10:00 on NBC.

What do you think the tapes of Vivian’s therapy sessions will reveal? Does Joanna deserve to be fired for sleeping with Julian? How much evidence will Julian be able to gather against Audrey?

Old memories and festering resentments have been dragged out during this season of Deception, making the New York elite face up to the role they played in the death of Vivian. So much has been left unresolved regarding their relationships with one another, but coming up on Deception, the person/people responsible for Vivian’s murder will be revealed, hopefully giving the family the peace needed to finally move on.

Listed below are the dates, titles, and descriptions of the final three episodes of Deception.

Monday, March 4th – “Good Luck with Your Death”
Robert begins to suspect Joanna’s true motives for coming back into their lives and flies her mother, Beverly, to New York, to help uncover the truth. Meanwhile, Joanna investigates Julian’s girlfriend who works for a rival drug company and finds some suspicious information. Mia offers to save Haverstock by donating her bone marrow but then discovers his true motivation. Sofia pays a visit to a dark character from her past in prison.

Monday, March 11th – “You’re the Bad Guy”
After Will fires Joanna for sleeping with Julian, she uncovers video tapes of Vivian’s therapy sessions. Working with the FBI, Julian wears a wire to gain evidence against Audrey. Edward turns himself in for the murder of Kimberly Yaeger. With Haverstock’s help, Wyatt is released from prison and confronts Sofia. Mia takes Joanna’s advice and donates her bone marrow to her birth father.

Monday, March 18th – “I’ll Start with the Hillbilly” (Finale)
Edward makes a tough decision regarding his wife’s condition and seeks revenge. Vivian’s murder case is reopened as new information comes out, and the identity of her murderer is revealed.

Deception airs Mondays at 10:00 on NBC.

What will Joanna find out about Julian’s girlfriend? Why did Edward turn himself in for the murder? Who do you think killed Vivian Bowers?

Until he found out about the test results last week on Deception, Robert assumed that Joanna was merely a lost woman in need of a new start in a safe environment; though part of the reason for his open heart toward her had to do with Joanna representing who Vivian used to be, Robert always defended the undercover cop and seemed to want to do well by her. However, all the guilt in the world over what happened with Vivian won’t get him to back down from looking into Joanna’s background.

On tonight’ s episode of Deception, Robert has flown Joanna’s mother into town, which could potentially blow her cover and put her in danger. The Bowers patriarch has shown that he has no problem with threatening people who cross him and with the acquisition of the golf club that Edward used to kill Kimberly Yaeger, he’s just as likely to manipulate family as he is anyone else; doing something to silence Joanna and protect the Bowers family name (and fortune) wouldn’t be much of a problem, then. If her mother can keep any incriminating information close to the vest, Joanna may be able to finish this investigation out after all and bring the person/people responsible for Vivian’s death to justice. However, if her identity becomes breached, she might have to abort the mission for her own safety and find redemption for Vivian in another way.

Can Joanna hold off Robert long enough to find the answers that those who loved Vivian need? Or will his power, influence, and cold-blooded nature prove to be too much for her to overcome?

Elsewhere on Deception, Joanna investigates Julian’s girlfriend and finds some suspicious information, while Mia discovers Haverstock’s true motivation in seeking her bone marrow and Sofia pays a prison visit to Wyatt.

Deception airs tonight at 10:00 on NBC.

What will Joanna’s mother reveal to Robert? Should Joanna have come back to the Bowers home? Why did Haverstock really ask Mia for the transplant?

He can never truly make up for what he did with the golf club that fateful night, but he thinks that by changing his actions and disposition, he can convince others (and himself, really) that he’s not the man he was then. But what cause will the Deception anti-hero choose to rail against?

On the next episode of Deception, Edward has called a press conference to announce the real trial results for Lyritrol. The only information that has been revealed about the cancer drug is that it had perfect trials and could potentially eliminate the need for chemotherapy, so if Edward wanted to blow its chances of getting onto market in the next couple of weeks, broadcasting the 27 deaths and subsequent family payoffs from Bowers Industries is a good way to start. In doing so, he gets to stick it to Robert and Julian while distancing himself from the Bowers brand and revamping his image beyond “that guy who murdered someone and got away with it.” Had he went out without concrete information, the public might not have taken any notice given his poor reputation, but since Edward has a copy of the trial results, maybe he’ll find an audience that will demand Lyritrol not make it onto shelves.

Elsewhere on Deception, Haverstock again reaches out to Mia, only this time his motives are less than pure, while Joanna tries to escape a hit man during a botched delivery.

Deception airs tonight at 10:00 on NBC.

Why do you think Haverstock has sought out Mia this time? Is Edward right in exposing the Lyritrol trial results? Did Robert have Vivian killed for knowing too much and potentially ruining the chances of Lyritrol making it on the market?

Whether it be out of perceived need to do “what Vivian would have wanted” or a desire to make their spacious mansion a little less empty, they invited her to live with them, only for the detective to get too close to the family secrets. Sofia may have kicked Joanna out of the house at the end of last week’s episode of Deception, but there’s still a way for her to continue the investigation into Vivian’s death through her connection with Julian. But what would happen if he found out the real reason she came back to town?

On tonight’s episode of Deception, Joanna follows a lead that ends in a gunfight at a local convenience store. Nobody gets injured, but her cover is potentially punctured when the clerk and a journalist both peg her as being a cop. With Vivian’s murder far from being solved, Joanna can’t afford to have her cover story blown, not when she’ll be staying with the two members of the Bowers family she’s closest to. There’s a chance that she could make some real headway into closing the case and finding the justice that has thus far eluded her best friend. That is, if she can keep everyone who knows of her as a cop quiet long enough for more Bowers secrets to come spilling from Julian’s mouth.

Elsewhere on Deception, Edward finds out disturbing news on Lyritrol, Haverstock reveals his true identity to Mia, and there’s a physical fight at a PR event for Bowers Pharmaceutical that results in a big career move for one family member.

Deception airs tonight at 10:00 on NBC. You can check out spoilers for the next two episodes here.

Will Joanna be able to keep her true identity hidden from the Bowers family? How will Mia react to finding out that Haverstock is her birth father? Is Lyritrol going to make it onto shelves?

When last we saw Mia, she had fled her cotillion upon finding out that her life had hit the tabloids, opting to leave the festivities on the back of Kyle’s motorcycle. Once away from the pomp and circumstance of her “entry into adulthood”, Mia and Kyle end up taking exile in an empty vacation home that belongs to one of his friends until the storm blows over. Mia also has the motivation of not wanting to be around her family at this time, particularly Robert and Sofia, who she feels betrayed by for not telling her about her mother before it hit the internet.

While Mia’s away, the subject of her father comes up, causing Joanna, Robert, and Sofia to get into an argument at the dining room table. If her father was merely a one night stand or an old boyfriend, it wouldn’t have garnered that reaction; what we see in the preview suggests that Mia’s father was someone who shouldn’t have been involved with Vivian in the first place, someone who Robert let around his daughter and who took advantage of the young girl. Is the Bowers family about to get even more dysfunctional and damaged once the truth comes out?

Elsewhere on Deception, Will goes to Edward and digs for answers regarding Vivian’s murder. Will he be able to find anything out from the elusive Bowers brother, particularly if Edward’s as motivated to become proactive in the investigation as the preview suggests? Or is Edward Bowers a stone wall that Will won’t be able to get through, regardless of approach or number of times attempted?

Deception airs tonight at 10:00 on NBC.

Who do you think fathered Vivian Bowers? Given Joanna’s reaction in the preview, could the father’s identity be even more sinister than she imagined? What will it take for Will to get answers from Edward?

He didn’t get out in front of the tabloid story enough to shield her from the truth, which led to her ditching out on her cotillion and speeding off on the back of Kyle’s motorcycle. While Mia will ultimately come back into the Bowers family fold, there’s a question lingering in the air: who was her father? Lost in all the trauma, hurt feelings, and confusion that came from the very public reveal, information that spread like wildfire, is that we still don’t know who fathered Mia Bowers. He’s not been mentioned or hinted at, so could he just be a one night stand of Vivian’s? An old boyfriend? Or something more sinister?

Listed below are the dates, titles, and descriptions for the next three episodes of Deception.

Monday, February 11th – “Don’t Be a Dummy”

Monday, February 18th – “Tell Me”
As Bowers Pharmaceutical is preparing to have Lyritrol on shelves in 3 weeks, Edward finds out some disturbing news about the new drug. Joanna pursues a lead that ends in a gunfight. Meanwhile, Senator Haverstock (special guest John Laroquette) reveals his true identity to Mia, and Edward and Julian get into a physical fight at a PR event for Bowers Parmaceutical, resulting in a big career move for Edward.

Monday, February 25th – “Stay with Me”
Edward makes a confession during a press conference that sends his family and their business reeling. Meanwhile, Mia’s biological father reaches out to her with ulterior motives, and Joanna struggles to escape a hit man during a delivery gone awry.

Do you think we’ve already met Mia’s biological father? What will Edward confess at the press conference? Who is Senator Haverstock?
