Set in Islamabad and Kabul, the fourth season of Homeland finds Carrie putting as much physical distance as she can between herself and Washington, as she goes out in the field for the first time since the whole Brody situation began. In order to feel normal again, Carrie has to embrace what she likes about herself and what makes her feel the most at ease, which turns out to be who she is when she’s working and the job of CIA agent as a whole. Carrie is good at what she does and to keep from wallowing in the pain from losing Brody and the uncertainty that comes with being a new mother, she has to get back into the field and prove to both her doubters and herself that she’s still a worthwhile agent. But will Carrie be able to fully escape her past or is what happened with Brody so engrained in her that she won’t be able to shake it off and do her job?

Joining Homeland this season are Laila Robins (Bored to Death) as United States ambassador Martha Boyd; Corey Stoll (House of Cards) as CIA Station Chief Sandy Bachman; Nimrat Kaur (The Lunchbox) as Tasleem Qureshi, a member of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence; and Suraj Sharma (Life of Pi) as Pakistani medical student Aayan Ibrahim.

The fourth season of Homeland is set to premiere Sunday, October 5th at 9:00.

Will you be watching the fourth season of Homeland? How do you think the show will acclimate itself to a life without Nicholas Brody? Are you excited to see Carrie out in the field vs. staying in and around Washington?

Stiehm inked a deal that brings her back to Homeland for its upcoming fourth season, as well as a yet-to-be ordered fifth season, reportedly due to a contentious working relationship with co-showrunner Elwood Reid. Reid, a novelist without experience in television, will serve as the lone showrunner for the second season of The Bridge.

Homeland showrunner Alex Gansa has already enlisted Stiehm to pen the finale for the polarizing third season, set to air next month. Stiehm was responsible for some of the show’s most acclaimed episodes for it the first two seasons of its run, including “The Weekend” (Brody and Carrie go to the cabin), “The Vest” (which won Claire Danes her Emmy for season one), and “The Choice” (the second season finale). Stiehm previously wrote for the likes of ER, NYPD Blue, and Cold Case, the latter of which she created.

This could wind up being a wise move for all parties involved. Homeland welcomes back one of its most revered writers following a season that has seen the show fall out of critical favor, while The Bridge, which sometimes had trouble with figuring out what it wanted to be, gets more stable leadership and a clearer creative voice. There’s no guarantee that Homeland rediscovers itself during season four or that The Bridge decides which road it wants to travel down, or that it even picks the right one to go down, but for the moment, both shows are better off than they were before this move was made.

The Bridge returns for its second season next July on FX, while Homeland currently airs Sundays at 9:00 on Showtime.

Does the move make you more optimistic for Homeland‘s future? How do you think that The Bridge will deal with the departure of Stiehm? Is the possibility of creative in-fighting the reason we don’t see many co-showrunners?

The third season of Homeland picks up nearly three months after the Langley attack and finds the likes of Carrie, Saul, Jessica, and Dana struggling to come to terms with what happened that fateful day and everything that’s built up since the last time we saw them. Both Carrie and Saul are filled with regret at the fact that they didn’t pick up on the attack, with the former going off her meds to retain the sharpness she once had and the latter drowning as the acting director of the CIA. Saul may be a hell of an agent himself, but he takes the reins during arguably the most difficult time the CIA has faced in a generation, having lost several of its own and come under fire from a Senate investigation into what they knew about a one Nicholas Brody.

Elsewhere, Dana and Jessica are having to adjust to not only a life without their father and husband, which they had gotten used to before he came home again, but a life as the objects of scorn for many people, since they’ve become outcasts in their community following the outing of Brody as a terrorist. Is there some way, any possible way, that they can reclaim a sense of normalcy in their completely unstable household and find the peace that Brody seemingly snatched from him when he made the tape before putting on the suicide vest?

Homeland airs Sundays at 9:00 on Showtime. You can check out a preview of the second episode, as well as a look at the rest of season three, below.

Do you think that Homeland can rebound from what many considered to be an off season? Should the series dial back the action and explosive plot twists in favor of something more methodical, contemplative, and slower in pace? How long do you think a series like this can conceivably run?

Showtime has released the official key art for the third season of Homeland, showing Carrie stuck in between her mentor Saul and her (former) lover Brody, who has become one of the most wanted men in the world following the D.C. bombing that killed several members of the United States government.

Could this be a sign of things to come? Carrie has always had the most faith out of anybody in Brody and the goodness that still resides in him, so there’s a chance that she could take up his cause and try to convince anyone who will listen that he didn’t have anything to do with the bombing. In some way, she might feel responsible for where he’s ended up, as nobody from the CIA picked up on what was going to happen that fateful day; had she heard something and followed yet another lead, read through her documents just one more time, or poked a hole in the intelligence she had already received, she might have been able to stop the bombing and kept Brody from having to run for his life and end up at the undisclosed location he’s beginning the third season. Is it possible that Carrie turns her back on her professional obligations/reputation and puts herself on the line for Brody? Or will she protect herself and side with Saul, who will likely be leading the mission to bring down the former Congressman?

The third season of Homeland is set to premiere Sunday, September 29th at 9:00 on Showtime. You can watch the official trailer for this season, a decidedly sad montage of haunting images meant to show the impact of Brody’s actions and choices since the beginning of the series, here.

Do you think there’s any conceivable way that Carrie chooses to believe (and side with) Brody this season? What will be the result of the investigation into the bombing and the way the CIA handled their intelligence? Will Brody make it through the entirety of season three and live to see a fourth season?

Once she let him go, he was on his own to either change his identity and attempt to live in as small of a North American town as he could find or come up with a way to make it overseas and into a country that had no clue what a Nicholas Brody even was. Unfortunately for him, his disappearance not only crushes his family’s hopes of ever being normal again, it ignites a global manhunt for the man suspected in the bombing that took out several key figures in the United States government.

Said bombing has left Carrie and Saul to deal with a resulting media firestorm, including a Senatorial investigation and hearings that could make or break the professional reputations they’ve been crafting for years. Carrie has the added bonus of having to be a part of a mission to apprehend the man she loves, the man she helped escape the country and evade apprehension from her colleagues. However, there’s no time for letting her personal feelings get in the way of her professional obligations, not when a successful capture and trial of Brody could get the heat off the CIA and allow Saul some breathing room as acting head of the department. Will Carrie be able to go through with the mission and keep her wits about her as she goes after Brody?

The third season of Homeland is set to premiere Sunday, September 29th at 9:00 on Showtime. You can check out the trailer for Homeland’s lead-out, period drama Masters of Sex, here.

Where do you think Brody is when we first check in with him this season? Should the show kill him off sometime during season three? Will Carrie and Saul be able to escape the media firestorm without much damage to their professional reputations?

The season will pick up during the aftermath of the horrific terror attack that decimated the U.S. intelligence apparatus, and prompted a global manhunt for the world’s most wanted terrorist – Nicholas Brody. While Saul is trying to keep the CIA from imploding around him as he assumes the role of acting director, Carrie gets swept up in the political and media firestorm surrounding the terror attack and the subsequent search for Brody’s whereabouts. F. Murray Abraham and Sarita Choudhury have already been bumped up to series regular status for the coming season.

Guests will include Joanna Merlin (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) as Grandma Lois, Jessica Brody’s mother; Nazanin Boniadi (How I Met Your Mother) as Fara, a capable analyst despite her young appearance; Amy Morton (Boss) as Carrie Mathison’s CIA appointed attorney Erin Kimball; Gary Wilmes (Louie) as Dr. Richardson, a psychiatrist helping Dana Brody cope with recent events; Sam Underwood (The Last Keepers) as Leo, a new friend of Dana’s with a troubled past; Tracy Letts (Prison Break) as Senator Andrew Lockhart, the powerful, authoritative and commanding Committee Chairman; Lawrence Clayton (Dreamgirls, The Big C) as Admiral Jim Pennington, the President’s National Security Advisor; and Pedro Pascal (Graceland) as Majority Counsel David Portillo, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

The Homeland season 2 finale seemed to project a pretty good idea of what season 3 would be about, right? Carrie (Claire Danes) fighting to clear Brody’s name so that they could be together. At the same time it projected a definite sense of distance between these characters, with Brody riding Carrie’s underground railroad to freedom and anonymity, while Carrie returns to Saul and his promise of not only a renewed position within the CIA, but a position higher in rank. Things never looked so fragile between the two. In a recent conference call, Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa revealed some shocking details on their plan for Homeland’s third season that really blew anything we might be thinking out of the water.

Number One – Brody Might Not Even Return

Brody’s status will be a shadow looming large over season 3 of Homeland. The Executive Producers admitted that if things had gone as they planned, Brody would have died towards the end of the season. In the back of Quinn’s limo, I would presume. “It would’ve [alleviated] the possibility of having Brody come back at a later time, which I think is a nice idea hanging over the next season,” Gansa said. “Where is Brody? What’s he doing? [He could come] back later in a new incarnation or in a new way.”

Number Two – Crazy Carrie Makes a Comeback?

Speaking of shadows, Carrie’s bi-polar was far less of an issue this season than last and strangely enough it might have been more obvious in her failures than her successes. Remember it was in her mania that Carrie did her best work, organizing that cacophony of information that ultimately held a logic that yielded important clues. The showrunners suggested that Carrie’s failure to see Nazir’s larger plan might have been caused by the dulling effect of her Bi-Polar meds, suggesting that Carrie herself might reach this conclusion.

Number Three – Brody Guilty?

While not stated definitely, it is suggestions that Carrie’s view of Brody’s guilt may shift throughout the third season. Is this the result of paranoia as she goes off her meds, or will new information emerge to suggest Brody really was involved.

Number Four – No More Terrorism?

Unlike season 1 and 2, season 3 will not deal with a terrorist bent on attacking the United States. The showrunners said they are seek and new “Propulsive Thriller Trope” to use as the basis of season 3.

Number Five – More Quinn

Quinn will absolutely be a part of season 3. Will he be a regular? no word on that.

So what do you think? Is a season 3 of Homeland without the Brody and Carrie dynamic? Could a Carrie/Quinn romance fill the void? Expect the unexpected.

Taking out the infamous terrorist leader has “freed” Brody from the sense of obligation that he felt, particularly after the two killed Walden, and with the war hero ending things with his wife, he and Carrie can be together. For good, for real, in public. Brilliant as she may be, Carrie’s an extremely lonely soul who simultaneously relishes her career and hates herself for letting it define her as a person, so finding a kindred spirit will make her jump at the opportunity to form a real human bond away from the pressure of her job. On the season finale of Homeland, she’ll be faced with the choice that will define the rest of her life either way she leans.

In a sneak peek from the Homeland finale, Saul confronts Carrie over this very topic, as she’s waffling on what means more to her: Brody or her career. She can’t be in a relationship with a man who wore a suicide vest in a bunker with top governmental officials (and had a role in the death of the former Vice President) and be a CIA Agent at the same time, but the choice between the two isn’t coming easily, which rubs Saul the wrong way. Carrie’s afraid of being alone and turning out like Saul, though her willingness to throw away all that she worked for for a man whose allegiance is still in question says more about how vulnerable her mental state is than anything. She had seemed to put it together a little more during the second season, having gotten back on her medication and been placed under a more watchful eye; however, the amount of time she’s spent with Brody and the intimacy that they’ve achieved in the name of keeping him focused on the mission only exacerbated the yearning Carrie has for human contact.

If she chooses to be with Brody, she burns some major bridges, both professionally and personally, and may end up being under the watch of the men with whom she worked closely with for years. Brody won’t exactly slip away from the CIA radar and anyone in his life will garner their attention as well. If she chooses to stay with the CIA, she’ll have to turn on the one person who “gets” her and the one person she’s been able to open up to, keeping herself alone but doing her job in the process.

What choice will she make?

Elsewhere on Homeland, Brody meets with Faber to talk about the future of the family, Saul undertakes a secret assignment, and Quinn has an important decision to make that could send shockwaves through the agency.

The second season finale of Homeland airs Sunday at 10:00 on Showtime. The show, which has already been renewed for a third season, recently picked up a slew of award nominations, including three from the Screen Actors Guild, four from the Golden Globes, and two from the Writers Guild of America. Additionally, Homeland landed on the AFI Top 10 TV Programs list for a second consecutive year.

What do you think will happen on the season finale of Homeland? Whose body is being dumped in the episode preview? Where will the show head in its third year?
