From director Cynthia Hill (A Chef’s Life), Private Violence emphasizes the stigma that domestic violence still carries by following the journeys of two women: Deanna Walters, who survived a brutal Halloween attack at the hands of her husband; and Kit Gruelle, a domestic violence survivor who advocates for battered women.

Presented during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Private Violence spotlights the aftermath of Deanna’s attack, the circumstances that trap domestic violence victims in abusive relationships, and the legal roadblocks that keep victims from pressing charges against their abusers. In Deanna’s case, the attack occurred across state lines and where she didn’t have broken bones or internal injuries, the most her husband could be charged with was misdemeanor assault against a female, punishable by 150 days in jail. The documentary shows Gruelle trying to find a way to get Deanna the legal justice that she deserves, as well as working with other women in similar situations, including a woman in jail for killing the man who blinded her in one eye,

In addition to its initial run, Private Violence will air October 20th (4:40 a.m.), October 23rd (11:00 a.m., 5:45 p.m.), October 26th (2:00 p.m.), October 29th (12:30 p.m., 12:40 a.m.), and November 1st (12:45 p.m.) on HBO, as well as October 28th (6:00 p.m.), October 30th (10:00 p.m.), November 10th (12:45 a.m.), and November 22nd (11:10 a.m.) on HBO 2.

You can check out a preview of Private Violence below.

Will you be watching Private Violence? What do you think can be done to fix the domestic violence problem in this country? Would you like to see a domestic violence documentary that focuses on other subsets of victims, e.g. LGBT victims, male victims, etc.?

Directed by Oscar winner Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street) and David Tedeschi (The Shield), the documentary focuses on The New York Review of Books, including founding editor Robert Silvers and longtime partner Barbara Epstein, who passed away in 2006. The duo had worked together for 43 years when Epstein succumbed to lung cancer at the age of 77.

The 50 Year Argument is said to weave together archival material, original verite footage, contributor interviews, and portraits by photographer Brigitte Lancombe in order to illustrate the depth and scope of the paper. The documentary will feature interviews with the likes of Noah Chomsky, Jennifer Homans, and Yasmine El Rashidi, with the history of the establishment of the paper, how its writers approached the larger issues they covered, and the debate that its most memorable articles inspired being highlighted throughout.

In addition to its initial airing, The 50 Year Argument will run September 29th (3:45 a.m.), October 2nd (8:00 a.m., 3:15 p.m.), October 5th (1:45 p.m.), October 8th (4:00 p.m., 12:35 a.m.), and October 11th (9:45 a.m.) on HBO, as well as October 1st (8:15 p.m.), October 9th (2:00 p.m.), October 14th (11:00 p.m.), and October 19th (10:50 a.m.) on HBO2.

You can check out a preview for The 50 Year Argument below. The film, which is Scorsese’s third HBO documentary following Public Speaking and George Harrison: Living in a Material World, was recently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Will you be watching The 50 Year Argument? Do you think we’ll learn anything unexpected about The New York Review of Books thanks to the film? What other subjects would you like to see HBO Documentaries cover?

Narrated by Emmy nominee Matt Bomer (The Normal Heart), the documentary takes a look at a recent anti-gay amendment to a Russian propaganda law that”s triggered a rise in the number of assaults committed against gays in Russia.

Only 1% of the LGBT population in Russia lives their lives openly for fear of losing their jobs or being targeted by vigilantes if word gets out about their sexuality. Gay rights groups don”t have the power to protest the lack of legal ramifications suffered by the attacks due to a number of ordinances preventing the mention of homosexuality in picket signs, while even straight allies have found themselves targeted by those who wish to do away with homosexuality in Russia entirely. Hunted features footage of homophobic Russians who casino have made it their mission to torment the country”s gay population, and those they suspect of being gay, with the reasoning behind the attacks being the supposed link between homosexuality and pedophilia.

In addition to its initial airing, Hunted will air October 6th (3:30 a.m.), October 9th (2:50 a.m.), and October 14th (12:20 a.m.) on HBO, as well as October 12th (1:15 p.m., 2:45 a.m.), October 16th (8:00 p.m., 1:30 a.m.), and October 22nd (1:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m.) on HBO2.

You can check out a preview for Hunted: The War Against Gays in Russia below.

Will you be watching Hunted: The War Against Gays in Russia? Are you surprised that this issue isn”t getting more media coverage in the United States? Will Russia ever be a safe place for gay men and women to live openly?

“After such a triumphant collaboration with The Normal Heart, everyone felt that Open was not the right next step for all involved. However, we fully expect to work together again in the near future,” said HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo.

Described as a provocative exploration of human sexuality and relationships, Open centered on the romantic and personal lives of five thirtysomethings as they dealt with issues of intimacy, infidelity, and identity. The cast for the series included Michelle Monaghan (True Detective), Wes Bentley (American Horror Story), Scott Speedman (Last Resort), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Revenge), and Anna Torv (Fringe).

Even with all the drama turnover at HBO, including the planned final seasons of Treme, Boardwalk Empire, The Newsroom, and True Blood, the network has only ordered one drama to series in recent months – that being Utopia, an adaptation of the acclaimed British genre drama. Currently, HBO has two dramas with pilots ordered (Martin Scorsese-produced History of Music, which stars Bobby Cannavale and Olivia Wilde, and Westworld, based on the 1973 Michael Crichton movie), though there’s no word on when a decision will be made about either’s status.

Are you disappointed that Open wasn’t picked up to series? Do you think that a show focused specifically on sexuality and intimacy but without the historical prestige of a Masters of Sex could work on television? What type of dramas would you like to see HBO pursue in their next development cycle?

At 9:00 will be the six-episode final season of The Newsroom, which ended its second season with the team from ACN staying and Will getting engaged to Mac on Election Night. There’s no word yet on what events from recent news cycles will be included in the third season of The Newsroom or whether the show will lean as heavily on that device, seeing as how they have a shorter episode order.

Following at 10:00 is the eight-episode second season of The Comeback, which takes place about a decade after the events of the show’s first and only previous season. Former TV it girl Valerie Cherish thinks that she’s figured everything out, but in reality, she’s as clueless about fame, celebrity, and the entertainment industry as she ever was. The acclaimed comedy, which gave Lisa Kudrow an Emmy nomination in 2006, will be returning much of its principal cast.

Closing the night at 10:30 is critically praised medical comedy Getting On, which stars Alex Borstein (MADtv), Niecy Nash (The Soul Man), and Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne) as workers in the geriatric wing of a Long Beach Hospital. The show premiered this past November and built an audience mostly by word-of-mouth, as it aired with a one-off Chris Lilley comedy and had one of HBO’s lowest rated dramas as the night’s lead-in. With the high profile return of The Comeback and the final season of a divisive drama acting as its lead-in, the show now has a better chance at being sampled.

You can check out teasers for The Newsroom, The Comeback, and Getting On below.

Are you disappointed that The Newsroom is getting such a short final season? Where do you think Valerie Cherish is after all these years? Will airing with some support allow Getting On to get sampled?

It’s no surprise that the two will be premiering in late fall, considering that the former made its debut last November and that Boardwalk Empire and The Newsroom will be completed by November, though a concrete premiere date will be released later this year.

Getting On, from creators Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer (Big Love), follows the goings on at Billy Barnes Extended Care Unit, a wing in a Long Beach hospital dedicated to taking care of older patients. Starring Laurie Metcalf (Roseanne), Alex Borstein (Family Guy), and Niecy Nash (The Soul Man), season two of the series will find Jenna on a research binge, Didi desperate for a raise, and Dawn continuing to try and land Patsy, though the latter is more concerned with his new lean, green program for the wing.

Created by Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City) and Lisa Kudrow (Friends), The Comeback debuted in 2005 to critical acclaim and low ratings, the latter of which caused its cancellation after just one season. The story of former it girl Valerie Cherish (Kudrow) attempting to recapture the fame that has eluded her for years, The Comeback was brought back due to strong HBO Go numbers and the show’s reputation as a daring, inventive comedy that predated the unstructured reality craze. Season two finds Valerie thinking that she has it all figured out when, in actuality, she’s just as lost as ever.

Will you be watching the second season of Getting On? Do you think The Comeback can recapture the magic of its first season? What kind of year do you think HBO is having creatively?

The Black Swan director is reportedly working on MaddAddam, based on three Margaret Atwood novels – Oryx and Crake, Year of the Flood, and MaddAddam. The series, like the books, takes place in the mid-21st century – a dystopian setting – where corporations hold the power governments once boasted, and genetic modification is the norm. The action takes place both before and after a cataclysmic event that decimates the world’s population.

Aronofsky is slated to executive-produce the drama through his own Protozoa Pictures alongside Brandi-Ann Milbrat and Ari Handel. He may also direct.

Have you read the books? Are you excited for a series?

Adapted for television by Damon Lindelof, The Leftovers is based on the novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, who also serves as executive producer on the series. and tells the story of a Rapturous event occurring and those who were left behind in a suburban community.
True Blood’s conclusion is the first of three planned series finales for HBO in 2014. After the Emmy-nominated horror series takes its final bite this coming fall, both Prohibition drama Boardwalk Empire and Aaron Sorkin vehicle The Newsroom will end their five and three season runs, respectively. HBO has already made the first steps toward replacing their considerable roster by picking comedies The Brink and Ballers and drama Utopia up to series for bows in 2015.

You can check out the first teaser for True Blood‘s seventh season below.

How do you think True Blood will end? Will The Leftovers be a solid match for the expiring vampire series? Should The Leftovers stick more closely with the events of the novel or should it forge its own path after a while?
