It’s as yet unclear how the show will deal with the loss of arguably its central character, be it through writing Savi out or recasting the character. Also to be determined is whether Milano will be open and able to appear at all during the third season and beyond, even if it’s to provide some sense of closure for her character.

Though understandable due to logistics, Milano’s exit is quite surprising considering that the show spent season two building to a third season centered around the clash between Savi and Joss over what happened with Harry. Even disregarding the issues of rhythm the show will have to deal with now that they’re down to three leads, the third season will likely have an entirely different structure, with Savi’s abrupt exit putting more weight on other storylines and leaving the show without the conduit that led to this group becoming friends. What will likely be employed now is a time jump, with Savi’s absence being exposited and likely becoming the driving force behind the season, particularly regarding Joss’s guilt and the amorphous blob that the group will turn into without her around.

The third season of Mistresses is slated to premiere next summer on ABC.

This is the second consecutive year that a renewal for Mistresses has come down to the wire, as ABC executives had until today to make a decision on whether to continue with the K.J. Steinberg-produced adaptation of the 2008 BBC series. Though the show averaged a shade under what it did during season one, the show produced the most buzz of any ABC summer original this year and still drew around 3.7 million total viewers, making for a fairly compatible lead-out for The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise.

Starring Alyssa Milano (Charmed), Yunjin Kim (Lost), Rochelle Aytes (Madea’s Family Reunion), and Jes Macallan (The Mentor), Mistresses follows a group of friends as they deal with personal and professional difficulties. Season two of the series, the only ABC original scripted series on the network’s summer lineup, focused on Joss (Macallan) attempting to become an event planner; Savi (Milano) dealing with the emotional difficulties that resulted from a brutal car crash; April (Aytes) beginning a relationship with a sexy stranger; and Karen (Yunjin Kim) learning how to let go of the pain she’s experienced in her past relationships.

The series also stars Jason George (Hit the Floor) and Brett Tucker (Neighbors).

On the season finale of Mistresses, Scott surprises Joss with an insta-wedding – he has the wardrobe, the music, the venue, and the preacher downstairs. Rather than subjecting her to the bloated, impersonal wedding of his mother’s dreams, he wants to have a private, romantic ceremony for just the two of them, a way for them to really connect and remind themselves of the love they have for the other. But Joss doesn’t like feeling forced into anything, nor does she like to conform under anyone’s terms but her own, and even if Scott had the best of intentions in putting this together, it could easily come off as him forcing her to marry him his way – his shoes, his dress, his preacher. She has a job that she loves and she doesn’t want to become complacent, giving up every bit of ambition she has in order to become the perfect doctor’s wife that she’s afraid he wants her to be. On the next episode of Mistresses, Savi and Dom’s relationship receives a major blow when his infidelity with Toni comes to light. It’s hard to blame Dom for feeling frustrated with the course of his relationship, considering that he put himself on the line by publicly “coming out” with her, but his cheating is no better than the litany of things she’s done wrong since the accident, especially since it was with someone Savi knows, doesn’t like, and doesn’t trust. While Savi might have been emotionally closed off following the accident, causing her to clumsily search for ways to better her relationship that ended up only making things worse, she never did anything to act out against Dom and the resentment that she feels about what he did is sure to negatively impact their relationship. But will it be enough to cause things to end between the two, even after all that they’ve been through?
