On the next episode of Family Tree, Tom gets thrown a farewell party by Al and Kitty and while all the prerequisites for this type of affair are present, it’s also the site where dark secrets about the Chadwick family will be exposed and his relationship with Ally will reach a turning point. This brings up the question of whether or not Tom will even return to England, considering that the secrets he learns may inspire him to continue searching for his family history. Things with Ally have also been going well enough to where staying in California for an extra while could give them a chance to take things slower and get to know one another better, something they haven’t been able to do in the compressed time frame he’s currently working under. But would he consider delaying his return to England for someone he doesn’t know well?

Elsewhere on Family Tree, Pete and Bea’s final day in California doesn’t go as they expected when Monk goes missing at the beach. Will Bea have to say goodbye to her longtime friend?

Thus far this season on Family Tree, Tom has participated in a pantomime horse race, attended a Civil War reenactment, and made the trek to the United States, but will his time at the reservation be the thing that grants him the epiphany he’s so desperately after?

Elsewhere on Family Tree, Tom rents a convertible and meets Ally for lunch, while Mr. Pfister calls with a new lead for Tom to follow regarding his roots and the quest to unlock the secrets of the Chadwick family.

Right now, that may be what he needs most, time to figure out who his family members are and how he can best relate to them; Tom came to America looking for another perspective on the Chadwick family name and he’s found a good start in Al, Kitty, and Rick. But in order to get the most out of his time abroad, he has to get to know them better.

There’s a chance that they could already have a certain amount of knowledge themselves and be able to give Tom the boost he needs in order to complete the family tree; even if they can only provide a few pieces of information, though, that could be enough to send him in a direction he wouldn’t have thought of had he kept up the search on his own. Helping things is the fact that, in addition to Al and Kitty, Rick and North Carolina Chadwick Dave are also in town, meaning that he has four very credible sources of information in which to draw from. Will that be enough to give Tom a major breakthrough in his search for genealogical knowledge and a new sense of perspective?

After finding out about family in Maryland last week, Tom has been informed of the existence of cousins in both Derbyshire and California, leading him to bring Pete, Keith, Luba, and Bea along with him to visit the former. Once at the Chadwick farm, complete with alpacas, family truths are revealed and Tom deliberately tries to uncover a family secret while exploring life in the countryside, which he’s never experienced before. The experience of searching for information about who his family is, where they are, and what decisions have been made that got him to this point has gotten Tom to think about ways he can change his life and extend the limits he puts on himself. Even though he’s not likely to move to the family farm and begin raising lifestock after years in the city, just exposing himself to something so different should be good for Tom and help him continue the pattern of growth that he’s exhibited since his journey began.

On the next episode of Family Tree, Tom digs further into the life of his grandfather, a participant in the 1948 Austerity Games. Eventually, following a visit with William’s old friend Mildred and a chat with Mr. Pfister, he and Pete end up at the gym that William used to train at and begin questioning the patrons who actually knew him. Tom may be in the very beginning stages of rifling through the chest and piecing together his family history, but continued direct contact with people who knew his relatives is one of the surest ways for the puzzle pieces to come together quickly. While he doesn’t have a whole lot to go on right now aside from a few items and a sudden thirst for knowledge, in addition to a lack of direction that makes this an important quest to complete, Tom is continuing to clarify the picture of the Chadwick family and once completed, he might have the type of self-awareness that he never expected to find in a chest of curios.

A car accident leads Tom to meet Ally Keele (Amy Seimetz), a beautiful aspiring writer, and the attraction appears to be mutual. Tom gamely participates in the Civil War reenactment with Rick, Julie and Harvey, but war isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. During the battle, he gets a phone call with news from England. Afterwards, Harvey gives him even more interesting news about his great-great-grandfather, which explains a lot of things.

With the help of Mr. Pfister (Jim Piddock), his avuncular neighbor, and Pete (Tom Bennett), an old school friend, Tom tracks down Neville St. Aubrey (Christopher Fairbank), a strange expert in the field of antique photos, who discovers intriguing and revealing information about Tom’s ancestor. Meanwhile, Pete tries to get Tom’s love life back on track by setting him up with a “model pretty” date. He’s just not sure what kind of model.

Their investigation takes them to a regional theatre, where he and Pete learn more than they ever wanted to know about Harry’s life and loves from Rex (Hugh Sachs) and Mitch (Guy Siner), the two friendly gentlemen who run the theatre. It also inspires Tom and Pete to engage in a unique competition, but not before Pete has set Tom up on another extraordinary date.

The family-tree plot thickens as he also hears from his American cousin, Al (Ed Begley, Jr.), on the trip. Pete’s life-affirming mission at the zoo proves to be a no less sticky venture.

Through his time traveling to lands he’s never been and subjecting himself to activities he’s never tries, Tom hopes to find the piece of himself that seems to be missing and come to a better understanding about the man he is and the man he wants to be. But in his digging, will he stumble upon something that he might not want to know?
