Chasing Life 1.10 Sneak Peeks: Dominic Returns from Europe

April thought that withholding news of her diagnosis would be the best thing for her relationship with Dominic. After he offhandedly mentioned that he wouldn’t want to take care of someone sick, she made it her mission to hide her diagnosis from him, further motivated by the opportunity he got to follow Daft Punk around Europe. April didn’t want to be the one to get in between Dominic and his dreams, not when she was already dealing with something standing in the way of her dreams, yet once everyone at the paper found out about her illness from Beth, she had no choice but to come clean to him before anybody else could get to him. Was that the right thing to do, though – telling him through print rather than calling?

On the summer finale of Chasing Life, Dominic returns from Europe and finds April in a much different place than she was when he left. The two are finally at a place of true honesty in their relationship, yet there’s a chance that her refusal to let him in about the diagnosis could breed some sort of resentment in him, to the point where he might not want to stick around to help her through the other side of the chemo. Dominic might be understanding about why April decided to keep the truth from him, as they weren’t together long and she wanted him to be able to live his dream, but even if he does decide to help April through her hellacious month of chemo, will he be able to shake off the fact that she withheld something so huge from him? Or will that mistrust come back to bite them sometime in the future?

The summer finale of Chasing Life airs Tuesday at 9:00 on ABC Family.

Chasing Life Summer Finale Spoilers: April Makes a Surprising Outreach

It’s taken a lot for internal, perfectionist April to reach out to those she loves in her time of need. For years, April’s always done the right thing, said the right thing, and never caused a hint of trouble; she made everything look easy and became the type of low-maintenance friend, daughter, sister, and lover that she thought everyone in her life wanted. However, no one wants her to spend this vulnerable, emotionally draining time by herself and she’s had to re-learn that with every member of her inner circle. It’s okay to be sick and it’s okay to ask for help, but in April’s most trying time, who will she reach out for and how will that impact the other people in her life?

Listed below are the dates, titles, and descriptions of the final two episodes of Chasing Life this summer.

Tuesday, August 5th – “What to Expect When You’re Expecting Chemo”
With only a few days left before April has to check herself into the hospital for aggressive chemotherapy, April is determined to live as normal a life as ever. But as she has to deal with Leo drama, Beth falling apart, and trying to live under the hovering eye of Sarah, April quickly learns that nothing will ever be “normal” for her. Meanwhile, Brenna tries to juggle time with Kieran and Greer.

Tuesday, August 12th – “Finding Chemo”
April begins her battle and month-long hospital stay with mixed emotions. Her resolve to fight starts to wane as her treatments take a toll. Not sure she can be cooped up in the hospital for much longer, April begins to panic. With her family by her side, April makes a surprising outreach to someone who may be the only person who can help her. Meanwhile, Dominic returns to a much different April then when he left.

Chasing Life airs Tuesdays at 9:00 on ABC Family. The series will return for a Christmas episode during ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas holiday event before beginning the second half of its first season this coming January.

Chasing Life 1.09 Sneak Peeks: Greer Meets Brenna’s Family

Though Brenna has slowly began to embrace her feelings for Greer, going as far as telling Kieran about her and joining the ecology club to spend time with her, she’s still not as comfortable with the idea of being official. It’s less to do with Greer being female and more to do with Brenna not having any experience in that area and with people she can bring home to her family. Thus far, Brenna’s dating life is more about upsetting Sara and finding any way that she can to “rebel,” but what happens when she decides to go another way and try to take things a little more seriously?

On the next episode of Chasing Life, Greer meets Sara and George at a Carver family dinner, where she regales them with stories of traveling abroad. The one person she doesn’t impress? Ford, who takes every opportunity she can to knock Greer down a peg. While Brenna can still find herself caught in the same mindset, that anyone who isn’t like her is “wrong” and deserves to be mocked, she’s grown out of that quite a bit while spending time with Greer, so she doesn’t particularly share Ford’s opinion about travel. Ford’s nastiness toward Greer might stem from a deep-seeded insecurity and fear of rejection, possibly as a result of an early-childhood trauma that lingers in her psyche, but she’s going to have to find a way to support her best friend if she wants to continue having one for the foreseeable future.

Elsewhere on Chasing Life, April has a full plate in her final pre-chemo days, as she’s forced to deal with drama from Leo, a breakdown from Beth, and her mother’s overprotectiveness going into overdrive.

Chasing Life 1.08 Sneak Peeks: April Blows Off an Assignment

April has been living her life as normally as possible since she received her diagnosis. Despite the fact that she’s looking into fertility doctors and edging her way toward chemotherapy, she’s still getting up every morning, going to work, and trying to maintain some type of routine in a life that could take a left turn at any minute. It might not be an ideal way to live, this laser-like focus on the professional with no room for anything spontaneous, but it’s something that has helped her thus far and something that she doesn’t feel comfortable in backing away from.

On tonight’s episode of Chasing Life, April gets a wake up call when a friend from her cancer support group takes a turn for the worse. Her focus had been so heavily on keeping the normalcy in her life that she’s not fully accepted the fact that she’s living on borrowed time, that all this worrying and planning could be for naught if the chemo doesn’t work. April has always been a forward thinker, someone whose primary goal is to make the future better even if it means suffering a little in the present, yet she cannot afford to give away much more time, not when she doesn’t know if she’ll emerge from chemo the same person. As such, she decides to do something completely out of character and blow off a particularly nightmare-ish assignment at work in order to spend time with Beth, though will this day of fun end up helping her mental state? Or will it only remind her of what she could be giving up thanks to her diagnosis?

Elsewhere on Chasing Life, April finds out something endearing about Leo, while Brenna travels to Miami on a school trip and uses the opportunity to seek out Natalie Ortiz.

Chasing Life Spoilers: Brenna Heads to Miami

Before she learned about April’s diagnosis, Brenna didn’t care about anything. Everything was stupid and beneath her, with her family being annoying, smothering, and the ultimate style cramper, but once she realized that there was a chance she could lose her sister, she knew that she had been wasting her time being closed off to everything and everyone. Not only has she found a new friend in Greer, someone she would have never gotten close to this time last year, she’s been as supportive of April as she can be, considering how she’s yet to process her own fear and anxiety regarding the vulnerable state of her sister. But when she heads to Miami on a school trip, Brenna finds a way to help April that could simultaneously blow her family apart.

Tuesday, July 22nd – “Unplanned Parenthood”
April sees a fertility doctor to learn about her options prior to starting chemotherapy and looks to her cancer support group for advice on how to tell Dominic about her leukemia. She gets Leo’s blessing to write a piece that paints Bruce Hendrie in an unflattering light and wins some hard-earned recognition at work. Meanwhile, George makes an effort to help Sara cope with her emotions and the pressure of caring for April, and Dominic gets a surprising offer which could change everything.

Tuesday, July 29th – “Death Becomes Her”
When a friend and fellow member of her support group faces a worsening prognosis, April begins to think more about death and her own mortality. She blows off a nightmare assignment to play hooky from work with Beth and other members of the support group and learns something surprisingly endearing about Leo. Meanwhile, Brenna travels to Miami on a school trip and uses the opportunity to meet Natalie with Greer’s help.

Chasing Life 1.07 Sneak Peeks: April Makes Professional Strides

April’s entire life has been geared toward professional success. She’s toed the line perfectly with hope that her determination and ambition will get her to where she wants to go in her career. Thus far, she’s done quite well for herself, getting a dream position at a prestigious paper and working her way onto several assignments, but April still isn’t where she’d like to be, not when she can hear the clock ticking down on her time as a healthy, energetic young woman. Before she can go into chemo, April is going to want one big article to go out on.

On the next episode of Chasing Life, April gets Leo’s blessing to write a negative article about Bruce Hendrie focusing on how his past actions go against the present public image he’s crafted. It’s a risky decision, going after someone that could give her articles to write for the duration of his campaign, but it’s a decision that April had to make, lest she find herself stuck writing inconsequential articles for the rest of her life. Now more than ever, April wants to make a difference and if that means making waves with Bruce Hendrie, she’s more than okay with that.

Elsewhere on Chasing Life, George makes an effort to help Sara deal with her anxiety regarding April’s diagnosis, while Dominic gets an offer to follow Daft Punk on tour for the next four months and April sees a fertility doctor in lieu of starting her chemo treatments.

Chasing Life 1.06 Sneak Peeks: April Takes Control of Her Future

April’s been working toward her future ever since she can remember. Every decision was geared toward making her dream scenario something of a reality and she was willing to make the type of personal sacrifices necessary to ensure that her life as a star reporter still had a chance. Ever since she was diagnosed with cancer, though, those thoughts toward the future, and the actions that have accompanied them, have been less about forward movement and more about preserving the status quo; April doesn’t want to let go of the progress she’s made and the only way she’s been able to be honest about her diagnosis, thereby risking everything she’s worked so hard for, has been listening to her fear.

On tonight’s episode of Chasing Life, Leo challenges April to take control of her future, citing the fact that she feels more micromanaged since she filled her family in on what she’s been going through recently. She’s not used to letting go of the reins, possibly for fear that someone will guide her to a place she doesn’t want to be, and for April to have the positive frame of mind necessary to overcome her illness, she’s going to have to keep things from spiraling out of control and her mother from playing too active a role in her treatment. There’s also the matter of fun missing from her life; with her diminishing time frame, April cannot afford to spend hours, days, and weeks fretting about her family, her job, her relationship, and everything that she’s missing while undergoing treatment. She has to get out there and experience things for herself and use what’s left of her life to the best of her ability.

Chasing Life Spoilers: Leo Challenges April to Take Control

April is someone who’s lived their life conservatively, never stepping out of bounds and always keeping her mind on the future. If something wasn’t helping her to get where she wanted to go, she couldn’t have it in her life, so rather than having the typical bumps and bruises that comes with transitioning to adulthood, April’s move from college to the working world has been fairly smooth, all things considered. But she’s had to keep quite a bit in with the death of her father and her recent diagnosis, so much so that she needs a moment to let go and to do things that she normally wouldn’t. Could Leo be the one to force her out of her comfort zone and give her a break from always having to be the strong one?

Meanwhile, April receives an official diagnosis from George and Sara’s mounting concern for April’s health leads to a confrontation.

April gets a surprising invite to shadow Bruce Hendrie at his campaign ad shoot for the paper. While there, Leo senses her apprehension of her diagnosis and challenges April to take control of her future. Not one to back down from a challenge, April accepts and gets a taste of Leo’s reckless and carefree life. But when things go too far, she learns the severity of Leo’s illness. Meanwhile, Brenna is unsure of her future with Kiernan, even more so when the relationship causes tension with her new friend Greer.

Chasing Life 1.05 Sneak Peeks: April Struggles to Be Honest with Dominic

April made a brave step when she confessed to Brenna that she had been diagnosed with cancer. Granted, that was less voluntary and more about the heat of the moment, but she still learned what it felt like to tell a family member that she was dying. While it helped that Brenna is the member of her inner circle that she’s least worried about going forward, she still has people in her life that she’s terrified of letting into her new reality for fear of inconveniencing them or driving them away.

On the next episode of Chasing Life, April struggles to be honest with Dominic about her diagnosis, even after inadvertently coming clean to Brenna. It’s one thing for your family member or life-long best friend to know about something as sensitive as a cancer diagnosis; it’s a whole other animal for a potential love interest, especially someone with whom you’ve only been acquainted a short time, to see you that vulnerable, especially if you’re someone like April who detests feeling weak. But it’s something that April is going to have to confront sooner rather than later, that idea of letting Dominic see her completely as she is and not as she wishes she were. He’s going to learn that she has cancer sometime in the near future and rather than focusing her energy on keeping her secret, perhaps April should be figuring out how to tell him and what it would mean for them going forward.

Chasing Life 1.03 Sneak Peeks: Is Dominic a Playboy?

One of the primary stressors in April’s life right now is her relationship with Dominic, but it’s not in the way you would think. Things with him are so promising and so comfortable for her that she’s psyched herself out, worrying about getting too close to him and when to reveal that she was diagnosed with cancer. Dominic represents the life that April could’ve had and while she wants to cling to him for dear life, she knows that eventually, she’s going to have to be honest with him about her diagnosis and that there’s a real possibility that he could leave her. Not that she would blame him, since they’re only getting to know one another and a cancer diagnosis is a lot for anyone to handle, but she wants the good part of their relationship to last as long as possible before she has to break her own heart.

On the next episode of Chasing Life, April learns from a co-worker that Dominic has a bit of a reputation for being a playboy, which might be a blessing in disguise. April had been torturing herself about whether and when she should be honest with this man, but if she’s not beholden to him and if something gets in the way of their connection, she won’t have the guilt of being the one responsible for their relationship’s downfall. That’s one less person she has to open up to about her diagnosis and that’s one less person that she’ll have to worry about as things get worse for her, but would April be willing to believe anything to absolve herself of the guilt from her dishonesty?
