SHARK TANK – “Episode 525” – Self-professed wine connoisseur Kevin O’Leary gives advice to a lady from Solano Beach, CA on her lighter, healthier alternative to a full-bodied wine. Likewise, Robert Herjavec has some suggestions for a former merchant marine from Anacortes, WA on his innovative, deep-sea treasure hunting business. Three men from San Francisco, CA hope to paddle their way into a deal with a collapsible kayak that folds up like the traditional Japanese art of origami, and a couple from Pleasant Hill, CA reveal to the Sharks the surprising twist they put into their decadent cinnamon rolls. The network hopes that by reairing the pilot, they can get the show sampled even more than it already was and stave off the drop that comes with every new show’s second episode. If ABC is able to keep Resurrection at an acceptable ratings level through its eight-episode first season, there’s a chance that the show could be brought back this fall for a 22-episode second season, likely with Once Upon a Time and Revenge on either side. It’d allow ABC to focus its attention on other nights and strengthen its drama roster, but is the concept, outlined below in the pilot description, flexible enough to handle the strain of a 22-episode season?

“The Returned”
An 8-year-old American boy (Landon Gimenez) wakes up alone in a rice paddy in a rural Chinese province with no idea how he got there. Details start to emerge when the boy, who calls himself Jacob, recalls that his hometown is Arcadia, and an Immigration agent, J. Martin Bellamy (Omar Epps), takes him there. The home he claims as his own is occupied by a 60-year-old couple, Henry (Kurtwood Smith) and Lucille Langston (Frances Fisher), who lost their son, Jacob, more than 30 years ago.

While they look different, young Jacob recognizes them as his parents. Lucille is overjoyed at the seeming miracle of her son’s reappearance. Henry is reluctant to accept that Jacob is back. Those closest to the family want answers, including Sheriff Fred Langston (Matt Craven), whose wife Barbara drowned 30 years ago while trying to save Jacob, and Fred’s daughter, Maggie (Devin Kelley), a local doctor. Pastor Tom Hale (Mark Hildreth) seeks a spiritual reason for what’s happening in his community. When things take an even more shocking turn, Maggie’s life-long friend, Elaine Richards (Samaire Armstrong), finds herself drawn into Arcadia’s growing mystery.

Resurrection airs Sundays at 9:00 on ABC. You can check out a preview of the second episode below.

What’s it about: Three friends living and loving in San Francisco.

The Red Road (February, Sundance)
Who’s in it: Martin Henderson, Julianne Nicholson, Jason Momoa, Allie Gonino, and Tom Sizemore
What’s it about: A sheriff finds himself partnering with a local Indian tribe as a way of covering up a crime committed by his wife.
Why?: Sundance went on an impressive hot streak with its 2013 scripted programming that The Red Road, with its unusual premise and intimate setting, looks to continue.

Thursday, January 2nd sees the second season of cooking competition The Taste take over for The Quest, which was booted to summer, at 8:00 and limited series The Assets assume Scandal‘s 10:00 slot for eight episodes. The Assets is based on the book Circle of Treason: A CIA Account of Traitor Aldrich Ames and the Men He Betrayed by retired CIA officers Sandra Grimes and Jeanne Vertefeuille. While the next season of The Bachelor premieres Monday, January 6th at 8:00, Killer Women has been slated to debut Tuesday, January 7th at 10:00, taking over a slot that saw Lucky 7 become the first cancellation of the season last month. The series stars Tricia Helfer as a divorced former beauty queen who rises to the top of the Texas Rangers.

Third season comedy Suburgatory returns to Wednesdays on January 15th, when it will take over Back in the Game‘s 8:30 slot. The series is said to have 13 episodes this season following two seasons of being one of the more promising comedies on the network. The ABC Wednesday lineup will also see the debut of Mixology on February 26th at 9:30 when it assumes the post-Modern Family time slot from Super Fun Night. Starring the likes of Vanessa Lengies, Sarah Bolger, and Blake Lee, Mixology takes course over the span of one night at a Manhattan bar. Kyle Killen drama Mind Games, which stars Christian Slater and Steve Zahn, is set to be the final premiere of ABC’s season, picking up the Tuesdays at 10:00 slot from Killer Women beginning March 11th.

The only midseason series that wasn’t scheduled was The Black Box and it seems like that could end up moving to summer unless one of the midseason dramas stumbles or the network wants to replace something like Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. Plans for what will replace Nashville during the country music drama’s planned hiatus have yet to be revealed, but with Black Box having 13 episodes, it doesn’t fit there. Also yet to be released is how ABC plans to handle Sundays between January and the beginning of March with Revenge and Once Upon a Time heading for hiatus soon.

The network revealed earlier this year plans to have each of its serialized dramas operate on a split-schedule, airing in two distinct chunks of episodes with little to no repeats. Today, they unveiled when the second chunks of each series will begin, though we don’t know what will be filling in the gaps during the time off. Nashville is the first to return on February 26th, with Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal beginning the second halves of their respective seasons the following day and Once Upon a Time and Revenge following on March 9th. The only fall drama without a split coming this season is Castle, but it has enough procedural elements and a loyal enough audience to where it might not need this type of scheduling.
