Any worries he might have had about serving entitled rich kids with no respect for authority get put to bed quickly, though, when he arrives at the house to find it covered in toilet paper and its members bearing nicknames like Pud, Turd, and Hefty Jeff. There’s an upside down soda specifically for forts and the Betas, whose house is decidedly not fancy, say they haze with hugs. Meanwhile, Linda has been tasked with helping Gretchen with her “lady goods” parties, but she didn’t quite understand what that meant until Gretchen brought out the first vibrator and used it on her face in front of Louise, Gene, and Tina. Linda forces them out of the room, just as Bob is getting a tour of the Beta house, including the fellowship room (specifically for drinking and drinking games) and the Slowhand Crooner Corner, set up by an older Beta alum who won’t leave the younger brothers be.

Linda is forced to help Gretchen out during a particularly silent sales pitch, vouching for the solar powered vibrator that she was trying to hock by mentioning how it saved her marriage once Bob’s disorder turned him “sex bad.” It actually ends up working, though, and the woman they were targeting ends up ordering another model. At the frat house, Bob agrees to drive the boys to the library, only to be told to stop in front of the Alpha house so they can drop a fish in the air conditioning. He manages to get the campus cops off their back by pretending to be a driving professor and gets to drink beer from Beta, the stuffed house lizard, once they get back to the house as a thank you for helping them out.

The following day, Bob brings the kids to the frat house and finds out that Dr. Yap is the infamous Slowhand. Yap gives the kids a tour of the house, ending with the Room of Secrets that he won’t let anyone that’s not a brother inside, though Louise tries to pick the lock with a credit card to no avail. They return from the tour to find that the pictures from last night of Bob drinking from Beta and singing karaoke with the brothers are on the wall, upsetting Yap since Bob’s not a brother and he wasn’t called when the prank was happening. Elsewhere, Linda gets named a pleasurologist by Gretchen and given the white lab coat needed to hook Susan, a woman whose friends threw her a “lady goods” party to help her get her mind off a break up. Linda succeeds in introducing Susan to a model called Sneaky Pete, just as Bob arrives at the house to find Yap on the floor, his head shaved and Dork written on his chest. He claims it was the Alphas who broke in, did that to him, and took Beta.

After receiving threatening photos of Beta, Bob and the guys head off to the Alpha house, where they write “wiener” in the grass and throw water balloons at the door. The frat receives a letter from Dean Dixon that puts them on probation for the property damage they’ve caused and other such violations, but Yap has a plan for the Alphas he calls Operation Spit Take. While the Betas are busy planning their revenge, Gene, Tina, and Louise make it into the Room of Secrets through the laundry chute and find porn magazines, photos, and Beta, who was behind a photo of Dr. Yap’s pledge class. He stole it in order to initiate a prank war and get his brothers to retaliate against the Alphas, which they’re planning on doing that night at a banquet meant to honor the President of the Alphas for his work in raising money to fight cancer. The kids tell Bob and they all head to the banquet, which Yap is working as a waiter. His plan? He saved six months worth of patient saliva and put it into a pony keg. The other Betas, waiting under the stage, will break it and have it spray the Alpha president when he begins his speech. Rather than let that happen, Bob makes a scene by calling the Alpha president his twin brother and not-so-subtly signals the Betas to hold off on breaking the keg. The Betas come out from under the stage, just as Yap comes running in with a wrench and breaks the keg, soaking Bob instead of the Alpha president.

Bob and the kids make it to the restaurant where they run into Linda and Gretchen having a “lady goods” party with cougars, who hit on the frat guys that Bob brought with him.

Additional thoughts and observations:
-“You say that like we’re not rich.”
-“I want a magic vibrating club just like any other boy!”
-“You’re a sick old man.” “Is that a good thing?”
-“I can’t not step on cold pizza.”
-“This is the biggest mancave ever and Tina’s going spelunking.”
-“I have a cat under my bed.”
-“Oh, Beta’s starting his own fashion line.”
-I like how a comedy plot about a nerdy frat wasn’t about how they wanted to be cool or how Bob wanted to make them cool enough for him to hang out with. Say anything you want about Bob’s Burgers, but the show’s ethos of accepting oneself is pretty touching, especially since it extends beyond the Belcher family.
-However, the ending with the spit soaking Bob was very gross and I’m somebody who thought the anus episode was brilliant. It seemed a bit beneath the show for climax of the episode to be something like that.
-Tina wore the briefs she found in the laundry room for the rest of the episode. Amazing.
-Also amazing: Linda voicing Sneaky Pete and convincing Susan to buy him. I kind of wish that the size of the plots had been reversed and we spent more time with her at the sex parties than Bob at the frat house.
-Bob’s karaoke song is Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know”. Mine is Jane Child’s “Don’t Wanna Fall In Love“.
–Bob’s Burgers is on hiatus next week, but when the show returns in two weeks, the Belcher Thanksgiving gets sabotaged when somebody dumps Bob’s turkey in the toilet.

In her opinion, their date nights have grown stale since they go to the same place and order the same place every time; she wants the type of adventure from their time together that Bob doesn’t, as he looks forward to the security that comes with their nights alone. The following day, Linda comes into the restaurant with a flyer for flying lessons that she picked up at the market, which she’s already signed them up for. However, Bob hates flying, so he decides not to go for the lessons, upsetting Linda in the process.

Linda arrives for the lesson with her instructor Kurt, who introduces her to Shoshana, the 45-year-old seaplane that she’ll be flying that day. Once on the water, it doesn’t take long for the vehicle to get up in the air and for Linda to become giddy from the adrenaline of doing something so out of her comfort zone. Back at the restaurant, Mr. Fischoeder comes in to use his cell phone and lets Bob know that the instructor who runs the lessons Linda’s taking is nicknamed Upskirt Kurt due to his ability to bed the bored housewives under his tutelage. And he even have the same routine every time – he fakes a plane problem (losing altitude, dead radio); he guides the plane to uninhabited Quippiquisset Island, nicknamed Quickie-Kiss-It; and he uses the adrenaline from the near death experiences to get the women to check on their husbands.

He does the first two steps with Linda and the two find themselves “stranded” on Quippiquisset, where she vomits three times after he successfully lands the plane on the water and scoots over to safety. For his part, Bob gets nervous about the possibility of Linda cheating on him and brings the kids to the docks; the family try to find a boat to take out to the island, with Mr. Fischoeder claiming that nobody in the area has a private boat for them to use. Once Linda calms down and gargles some mouthwash, she and Kurt get off the plane, picnic basket and Prosecco in tow. He claims that the basket was for a picnic with his mother while she downs the wine and eats the cheese before the two move to a shady spot on a nearby meadow. He starts taking off his shirt talking about the heat between them and telling her that she should take advantage of the adrenaline flowing through her veins, but she headbutts him for making a pass at her and elbows him when she finds out that the emergency was faked. However, they have bigger problems once Shoshana gets washed out due to the tide.

Bob and the kids eventually hitch a ride with a mail man at the King’s Head Island Post Office, though he never goes to Quippiquisset due to there being no mailboxes or houses on the island. As Linda spells out “HELP” in wine bottles, she divides the island into two parts to keep Kurt away from her, only to try and comfort him when he cries over there being nobody out there for him. But this isn’t a sudden moment of clarity; it’s him trying to get sympathy sex and when he tries to kiss her, she hits him in the throat. The kids find a rowboat once they hit the island next to Quippiquisset and an exhausted Bob rows them until they find Linda and Kurt. Just then, Mr. Fischoeder roars by in his speedboat, Shoshana attached to the back. The Belchers crowd in to the seaplane while Kurt rides along with Fischoeder up front and the two men decide to put the pedal to the medal to see just how many of those 1000 horses could be summoned at once. Unfortunately, this gets the seaplane enough moment to begin lifting off and a bridge is approaching in the distance.

Bob finds a wine opener in the plane’s tool box and climbs out onto the wine to cut the towrope, freeing the plane and allowing them the opportunity to fly over the bridge. As he does so, the door breaks and he tries to have a conversation with Linda where he apologizes for not doing anything about how uninspired their date nights were. Bob eventually cuts the rope and Linda flies the plane over the bridge before using the technique she saw from Kurt to land just before hitting the boardwalk.

Additional thoughts and observations:
-“Breadsticks. Breadsticks. Breadsticks. Breadsticks!”
-“Oh, my! She just rhyme-burned you.”
-“You’re not not on the rocks.”
-“Look at Castaway. Tom Hanks falls in love with a volleyball.”
-“And you should work in my coal mine.”
-“This guy thinks everywhere’s Key West.”
-“My endorphins think we should take turns kissing each other’s faces.”
-“Good day for neckin’.”
-The business beside the restaurant was Don’t Go There – Cautionary Signs.
-Gene thinks that Bob is just being really mean to seaplanes when in reality, he actually likes seaplanes. No hair pulling this episode, though.
-I would like a Bob’s Burgers spinoff where Teddy talks about movies. Or one with Gene as Daiquiri Zachary, mystery solver.
-I was a tiny bit disappointed that Tina’s Quippiquisset fantasy, which was already pretty delightful, didn’t include any zombies or horses. Or Jimmy Jr.
-Overall, I wasn’t a huge fan of this one. I do like it when a comedy will tweak its structure, but aside from potentially adding a new peripheral character to an already colorful world in Upskirt Kurt and reaffirming Bob and Linda’s love/appreciation for one another, it felt very slight due to not having a subplot featuring the kids to balance things out. I like Bob/Linda stories; I just think they’re best served when either prominently featuring one of the kids or when they have a bigger/broader/more energetic plot with the kids to bounce off of.
-Next week on Bob’s Burgers: Bob takes a part-time job as a fraternity house cook and participates in a prank.

Louise receives an offer from Millie, a girl in her grade, to go out together as “Dust Bunnies,” with Louise dressing as dust and Millie as a pink bunny. Exasperated, Louise wonders aloud when she would be dust in that arrangement. Bob and Linda are busy putting the finishing touches on the dragon costume by manually gluing sequins to represent the creature’s scales. Only it’s taking much longer than they anticipated and they’re forced to play a CD of Halloween sounds that Teddy bought them, though they try and get him and Mort to help with the remainder of the costume.

The dragon’s eyes are being held in the kids’ fort, where Gene spray painted them himself (before taking a nap). Louise, Tina, and Gene give Darryl, Andy, and Ollie a tour of the “two-story” abode, including Gene’s odor-filled room, Tina’s room of insecurity and horses, and Louise’s room with chalk drawings on the walls. They all managed to avoid Millie when she nearly got in and go over the plan for trick-or-treating that night; Darryl has come up with a system where the houses that give away good candy are starred on a map and the ones where the treats are pencils, apples, and/or hand sanitizer are X’ed out, meaning that they’ll be avoiding them at all costs. This is Tina’s last year as a trick-or-treater and she wants to make it count, but before she can get out to have her one last hurrah, the garbage man (dressed as Carmen Miranda) backs into the alley where the fort is and unknowingly pins the kids inside. They hear him mention on the phone that he’ll be leaving the truck there overnight, yet when the kids scream from horror, Bob and Linda think its coming from the CD that they’re still playing.

The kids panic and begin looking for weak spots in the fort; they find that they’re surrounded by truck, concrete, and metal, so their next option is Millie, who hears them yelling and walks over to the fort. However, Louise ends up insulting her and telling the girl that she doesn’t like her, causing Millie to dump the bag of dust she had and merrily tell them to enjoy Halloween in the fort before leaving. She comes back, though, and taunts them from outside about being in friend jail before releasing a horde of spiders into the fort. The kids run to the next room and Andy gets trapped by himself with the creatures; he and Ollie share a moment until Louise notices that he’s not being attacked and determines that the spiders are fake. Meanwhile, the costume alterations aren’t going so good, as Teddy spent the time allotted for 20 scales on one scale and Mort made an extra tail after Bob ended up making the actual tail for the creature. As they’re out of sequins, Bob heads to the art supply store where he has to forcibly give the owner his money and run back toward the restaurant, only for the jar to break in the middle of the street and spill sequins everywhere.

Back in the fort, the kids try to occupy themselves by having their own trick-or-treat where Tina gives out batteries and coffee filters. Just as they’re losing hope, they notice that the garbage next to the outside of the fort had softened the cardboard enough for one of them to escape and attempt to get help. Ollie gets volunteered to save the day and makes it to daylight; once there, Millie is waiting and she shuts the lid of the dumpster on his head, further trapping them in the fort. The kids turn on each other and begun searching for who was the rat that leaked to Millie their plan of escape. Louise accuses Tina who accuses Gene, only for it to be Darryl who was the mole, writing letters to Millie about how he needs candy and to use the bathroom. Louise’s plan of torturing him goes awry and the group has to deal with Millie outside the fort eating the candy that she had just gotten from trick-or-treating. The girl then overhears Bob and Linda leaving the restaurant after having to use an unpainted napkin box as the dragon’s head. She informs them that Gene, Louise, and Tina were off trick-or-treating and gets them to follow her, while Gene eats cardboard and Darryl come up with an idea to use a coat hanger to hit a nearby button on the truck that will (hopefully) lift the lid and allow them to escape.

As Bob and Linda are off using the costume they worked so hard on for their own trick-or-treating, where Bob gets recognized almost immediately, the kids attempt to execute their plan, only for Darryl to hit the wrong button and the roof of the fort to begin closing down on them. They do manage to keep it propped open by stacking paint cans and a concrete block, long enough for the door to be ripped open by the truck and allow them to escape, minus a shoe from each of Andy and Ollie. Unfortunately, trick-or-treating in their town is over, as the lights all begin flickering off when they begin planning which house they’ll go to first, greatly upsetting Darryl. While the kids return home to find their parents gorging on candy, candy that they try to get themselves, Millie finds the shoes and thinks that she inadvertently killed them. She gets spooked by the kids acting like ghosts (and hearing their voices without seeing their bodies) and leaves her candy before running away.

-“This is Tina’s room. You can really feel the insecurity.”
-“Sayonara, raisins. Old grapes aren’t candy.”
-“I felt you die.”
-“I’m not Bob Fosse!”
-“I’m handing out batteries in a box full of Gene’s farts.”
-“Butts get wet, Tina. It’s what they do.”
-“I ate a flower!”
-“China would be furious about this dragon.”
-“I can’t watch. Mostly because I can’t see.”
-“Oh my God, my last meal was cardboard.”
-“Congratulations, you’re a robot.”
-“Happy Halloween. Thanks for killing us. Heaven’s nice.”
-The business in the opening credits? Johnny Razor’s Totally Normal Candy Store. The truck? Fugetta Bat It Exterminators.
-Molly Shannon was amazing as Millie. The (horrifically creepy) laugh, the smile (pictured above), the Shining-ish way she looked into the fort, the skipping, the weird manic energy that felt vaguely “budding serial killer” – all delightfully off-kilter. Her line about sleeping in bunk beds and living in the forest? Wonderful.
-I like how Teddy bought a CD not of Halloween songs but of just shrieking.
-Bob’s been in the fort, but Linda hasn’t. I’m guessing Louise let him in?
-Funniest visual of the night: Gene’s “spray paint nap.” It was very quick, but it caught me off guard in the best way.
-Very sweet ending, with the kids crawling into the costume to get the candy. The show may seem strange and all, but I’d argue it’s the most genuinely emotional family comedy on television.
–Bob’s Burgers will be on hiatus until November 3rd due to upcoming playoff baseball coverage. Happy Halloween!

However, both Louise and Linda are dreading their time outdoors; Gene and, especially, Bob, though, look forward to the adventure, with the latter having purchased the Nature Master, a Swiss army knife of sorts that functions as nearly every tool one would need on an expedition like this.

While there are no 13-smile hikes or consensual bird watching sessions to speak of, there are also no park rangers, as the (literal) lone ranger high-tailed it when the Belchers came. In terms of supplies, Bob only brought the bare necessities, thinking that his family would live off the land during their trip and use the (elevated) river as their one-stop shop for food and water. After calling attention to the phallic-shaped rock named for William Archibald Wang, Linda and the kids say hello to the couple living next to them in an RV, who happen to have a large supply of food around. The two, a pair of doomsday preppers, allow the family to take what they need, including some chili for their dinner. Bob’s dinner, though? A single, tiny, undercooked trout that he caught with the Nature Master.

That night, after he and Linda put the kids to bed, Bob invites her to go skinny dipping with him at the warm spring a friend told him about. She agrees and the two end up taking a dip in the lukewarm water, only for Bob to get sick from the fish he ate. He tries to get up and go behind a bush, but Linda won’t let him leave and the two end up floating down river when Bob falls back into the spring, breaking one of the sides of the small pool as a result. While the kids talk in their tent about the strange noises coming from outside, Bob and Linda fight the current (and each other) before landing on shore. After Bob uses the bathroom (twice), finds a walking stick for them to use, and crafts a skirt made of twigs and leaves, they set off trying to find their way back to camp before the kids wake up. They wouldn’t want Gene to be raised by wolves and be denied the love of other kids now, would they?

But the kids wake up before Bob and Linda come back. As Gene exclaims that they’ve melted, Tina thinks that they should wait for an authority figure to come, per her handbook, and Louise wants to go tubing and find them herself. They sneak back to the RV and grab some supplies before heading down river on three inner tubes, hitting rapids along the way. Meanwhile, Bob and Linda are planning on how to get back; she wants to retrace their path, but he thinks they should head straight across, as it would be quicker. However, they end up even more lost than they were before and Linda resorts to eating ants and worms to keep herself going. That comes in handy when Bob collapses as his second wind fails to catch sail and the two spend their second straight night in the woods.

Elsewhere, Gene, Tina, and Louise are changing their plans after stealing the RV couple’s book about ways to survive an apocalypse. It gets them a shelter built and a series of weapons built, as well as tips on how to weaponize insects, while also allowing Louise to get inside Tina’s head with talk of how organizations (like the Thundergirls) are the enemy for awarding empty trinkets. Along with the issue of chanting/brainwashing, Tina begins to reconsider her position in the scouts just as they hear a noise coming from the nearby bushes. It turns out to be Thundergirls Troop 39, but the kids won’t accept any help from them. Tina goes on a rant about how they’re all cogs in a cookie-moving machine and renounces her membership, throwing her handbook in the fire as Gene takes cookies from the scouts.

Bob is still sick the following morning, with both diarrhea and vomit still coming out of him. Citing their turn as a disgusting Hansel and Gretel, in addition to her wilderness hairbrush, Linda tries to take charge, only for Bob to reject the idea and the two to end up separated. While Tina is busy having an identity (and fashion) crisis about who she is if she isn’t a Thundergirl, Bob finds an acorn and, eventually, several handfuls of acorns that had been stored by a squirrel. Before he can eat them, though, every squirrel from every surrounding tree comes over to him to protect their food for the winter. They don’t attack him like he expects and get shooed away by Linda, who he apologizes to for his actions and calls a Nature Master. They end up making it back to camp and discover that the kids are gone; they inquire to the RV couple about where they went and the couple mentions how they stole (among other things) fudge, their survivalist book, a backgammon game, and three inner tubes.

Having been out in the woods for 40 months, they take the book nabbing as evidence that the Belchers want to join them and invite Bob and Linda inside for a Ritual of Trust, complete with lotion and a latin jazz cover of “Everybody Dance Now”. Before the “very sexual” ceremony can begin, Linda gets an idea and excuses herself and Bob to the bathroom, where she tries to climb out the window. However, it’s too small; she does see the kids, though, and tells them to get help. Tina uses her satin sash to grab the bee’s nest hanging above their camp and throws it into the RV, running all four adults out. While Bob and Linda hurry the kids to the car, leaving everything but the Nature Master behind, the RV couple accidentally mace each other and remain alone.

Additional thoughts and observations:
-“I’ve got a note around here somewhere.”
-“Could it kill an eagle?”
-“Nature boner. Boing!”
-“Wine helps me drink.”
-“Safe, safe, goner. Good night.”
-“Yeah, let’s get our tubes tied!”
–Hurray season 5!
-The shop in the opening credits: Tandemonium, a place for all your tandem bike needs.
-Bob did not tell Linda he had a saw in his pocket when he met her. At least I don’t think.
-The line about tube tying made me laugh til I cried. I saw it coming and yet, it didn’t disappoint whatsoever. Props.
-I would go camping, too, if I could make my own macaroni and cheese, Gene.
-Linda’s glasses stayed on while tumbling into a river and going 30 MPH downstream in rapids. Magic.
-New addition to the Bob’s Burgers song catalog: lyrics on screen!
-The description of Gene as a wolf is exactly why I love this show so much. And love it I do, as it was the broadcast network show I was most looking forward to coming back.
-That cover of “Everybody Dance Now” was amazing in the worst way possible. Or something.
-I have the feeling that Louise would thrive being a survivalist and conspiracy theorist. Perhaps she’ll have a conspiracy board a’la Homeland later this season?
-The underwear Gene wore (sometimes on his head) the entire episode, thinking they’re Bob’s? They’re not Bob’s. Ah well, more for him.
-Next week on Bob’s Burgers: The Belchers build a fort after going trick-or-treating and get held hostage by one of Linda’s friends.

The series, which recently earned its second consecutive Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program, reportedly ranked in the top 10 of comedies among Men 18-49, Men 18-34, and Male Teens last season.

“Bob’s Burgers is one of those rare finds that just continues to outdo itself, creatively,” said FOX Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly. “The show has become a key member of our Sunday Animation Domination family, and we’re looking forward to attracting new fans with another season.”

What will also help Bob’s Burgers is that it’s been in syndication on Adult Swim since earlier this summer and has been garnering solid ratings for the cable network. Though it might not necessary show immediately, the exposure can only help the series as the season goes on and Adult Swim plays out the entirety of the first three seasons, allowing people to catch up and jump aboard; any potential spring ratings drops will thereby be softened and the show will be in an even better position than it is entering season four. For what it’s worth, Bob’s Burgers was already one of only two series on network television to gain in the ratings last season, growing about 10% year-to-year, so it has the momentum to really make a step forward this season and solidify itself as the next Animation Domination mainstay.

The fourth season premiere of Bob’s Burgers, where the Belcher family goes on a camping trip and Bob gets sick, is set to air Sunday at 8:30 on FOX. You can check out a recap of the third season finale here.

Do you think that Bob’s Burgers will eventually inherit the Simpsons‘ mantle and its 8:00 time slot? What do you hope to see from this coming season of Bob’s Burgers? Should this be a lesson to networks that allowing shows, especially young comedies, to grow creatively and commercially can be advantageous in the long term?

At his first game, Gene’s busy playing his stomach like a bongo and using the eye black to draw on half his face; however, his coach is forced to play him, since there’s a rule within the league that every team has to play every player. Gene’s terrified of being hit by the ball and doesn’t take to either batting (where he tries swinging three times in a row to strike himself out rather than face another pitch) or fielding (where he uses his cup to protect his head from a fly ball).

As a result of the experience, Gene vows to never set foot on a baseball field again. Linda begins asking Bob about giving his son extra coaching to get him ready for the next game – Bob never played catch with Gene when he was younger, so they’re going to have to work extra hard to catch up to the other boys on the team. Their first practice, though, ends up with Gene throwing the ball in Bob’s face and the two getting into a garbage fight, complete with flung dirty diapers. Frustrated, Linda digs into the world of Google and finds a day camp that Gene could go to, which is ran by The Deuce of Diamonds, formerly known as The Prince of Persuasion. In the slickly edited video, the Deuce makes it seem as if anyone who goes to his camp will end up hitting home runs – for $495. Bob immediately says no, not even after being guilt tripped by Linda, who goes to the pawn shop to try and unload some of her porcelain figures to no avail.

There’s a new piece of machinery at the restaurant in the form of an espresso machine. Bob’s immensely proud of having the expensive, (in his mind) high class coffee machine and tries to get Teddy to try a cup of espresso in celebration. However, Teddy hates the tiny cups, as they make it look like he has giant hands, and rejects Bob’s offer. Tina gets the cup and, while at first remarking how terrible it is, immediately becomes addicted to the caffeine. She hallucinates rows a boat made of an espresso cup in a river of coffee before diving into another cup of coffee and doing the backstroke, a hallucination filled with both unicorns and Teddy.

Tina’s addiction becomes severe quite quickly, her speech quickening, her confidence growing (she asks Jimmy Jr. out on a date while he’s out riding his bike), and her mood swings becoming much more pronounced. Just as she’s in the middle of being a caffeine addict, Linda and Louise decide to sell the espresso machine to pay for Gene’s camp – Bob hasn’t sold a cup yet and neither think he will and therefore won’t notice that it’s gone.

Gene makes it to camp, where the Deuce gets all attendants to view themselves as the boss of their glove and refuses to use a ball, as baseball is all in the mind. Meanwhile, Tina is going through caffeine withdrawals thanks to Bob cutting her off from the espresso, causing her to snap at Teddy and Jimmy Jr. and desperately ask for a bite of the bean. It’s then that Teddy decides to give espresso a try, even though Linda tells him it could shrink his penis. Bob’s, of course, upset that they took the machine without telling him, replacing it with a pack of toilet paper, and that Linda sent Gene to the camp that he didn’t want him to go to.

At the camp, while Andy and Ollie decide to become umpires rather than players, the Deuce is having problems with the manager of the hotel he’s staying at. He’s $1,100 in debt with no way to pay and thus decides to take the kids from camp with him while he paid off as much as he could. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have enough money to pay his debt in full and orders the kids to begin hitting the manager’s soda machine in a bid to get him to lower the price.

Meanwhile, Bob and Linda arrive at the camp where they find a gym bag and no kids. They see the hotel towels and drive over to find their son hitting the soda machine; Linda encourages his swing, while Bob demands his money back, seeing as how the Deuce is a fraud. He challenges the Deuce to a pickup game in a nearby vacant lot – if Gene gets a hit, Bob will let him keep the money. If he doesn’t, the Belchers get a full refund. After Tina sings the national anthem, the game gets under way and Gene’s swing is noticeably better, helping him make contact on the first pitch. It’s a very high pop up that Andy and Ollie should have – if they weren’t too busy arguing over who would get it. They decide to share the fly ball, which bounces off their gloves and hits the ground. Gene runs hard to the base and is declared safe, just as the Deuce flees the scene with the money.

Bob’s not too disappointed about losing the money, though. He’s happy that Gene’s happy and that his son got a dose of confidence form his experience at camp. Tina, meanwhile, isn’t over her addiction to coffee and ends the episode chugging the week-old pot from the hotel the Deuce stayed in.

Additional thoughts and observations:
-“I think that’s the electric slide.”
-“What doesn’t break my testicles only makes them stronger.”
-“Yeah, it’s an acquired taste – that I just acquired.”
-“Gene, you’re in.” “What about urine?”
-“Quiet dignity? Have you met us?”
-“Last chance to earn my love, guys.”
-Gene referring to his jersey as a top was adorable and very, very Gene. As was his Toad the Wet Sprocket reference.
-I liked the evil Gene/good Gene dilemma, especially since evil Gene’s facial hair was very blobby and not drawn in correctly.
-Cute gag with Bob not knowing what to call the burger of the day and Tina taking the word gouda and running with it. My favorite was Gouda Gouda Gum Drops.
-Linda has a Spanish copy of 50 Shades of Grey. Because of course. Also, her giggle after Louise said “I told you you’d like crime, mom” was the best, as was her telling Bob that she’s rather waste money on Gene than an espresso machine.
-Linda and Gene go for mani/pedis together. I kind of want this to be a subplot next season, a spa day with the two of them.
-REGULAR-SIZED RUDY. Please let him be a peripheral character like Andy/Ollie, Teddy, and Mort next season.
-Thank you guys for sticking with me and reading my Bob’s Burgers recaps, everybody. I hope you enjoyed this season as much as I have. See you sometime in the fall?

Instead, that honor’s going to Bob, even though he doesn’t have good memories of field trips; the one time he went to the museum, he ditched to smoke cigarettes by the zebras with Warren Fitzgerald. However, Gene’s excited about the Sands from Exotic Lands exhibit and Bob wants to pull through for his children, so as much as he may dislike Mr. Frond, he’ll be the lone parent for the day.

While Frond hurredly changes his pairings to have Andy and Ollie together, lest they throw another tantrum, Gene is going on a boobie bender with Zeek, Louise was put with regular-sized Rudy, and Tina is buddies with Henry, who she considers to be the weirdest kid in school. However, he considers Tina to be the dorkiest kid in school and they both approach the pairing with the intent to increase the other’s cool factor so they’re not an embarrassment to be seen with.

On the bus ride there, Tina tries to talk to Henry about his interests, which include graphic novels, only to become frustrated at his lack of coolness, while Louise takes a liking to Rudy and his cymbals, which she uses to punctuate a joke. Being that there’s a strike of museum workers going on right now, the museum is only working at 1/8 capacity, thereby closing the noted Amazon room and frustrating an already irritated Louise (who hates field trips, any and all) beyond belief. She convinces Rudy to sneak off from the crowd with her and into the exhibit, full of tree, plants, and dirt like that found in the Amazon; he ditches his backpack and the two go looking for a way to climb the ropes and touch everything.

At head count, Bob notices that Louise is missing and heads into the Amazon room himself where he finds Louise and Rudy hiding in the plants. She gets him to let them look around a little more, all the while Tina is extolling the virtues of horses to Henry and Zeek is breaking out the boobie checklist from his cousin, which includes a linear list of the boobs they’d be encountering at the museum. Back in the Amazon room, Bob lets Louise and Rudy go on a stilted hut and lets himself be talked into climbing to the top of the room by Louise, who calls him soft and brings up his own field trip rebellion as evidence that he should let them do what they want.

He pushes over one of the display trees and gets the kids to climb up it, which aggravates Rudy’s asthma. Bob reaches the top with Louise and she lets it slip that her future includes running the restaurant while he’s in a nursing home, surprising him and making him needle her about being her hero and looking up to him. However, they have to turn their attention to Rudy, especially once a security guard moves the tree back to where it belonged. There’s no way for them to get down and Rudy has to have an inhaler, which he kept in his backpack, every two hours or he’ll die. Bob uses his neon yellow volunteer vest to slide down a nearby rope, landing on the ground below. He moves the tree back and gets Louise and Rudy down, drawing the attention of the security guards and making them have to run for the bus.

While this is going on, Tina and Henry are having a dork-off and going around to see who their classmates consider to be dorkier. Unfortunately, they end up tied and acknowledge that maybe they’re both dorks and that’s okay. Other people in the final room admit to what they’re dorks for (including dancing, sand, boobs, their siblings, and cheap chardonnay) and the class heads to the bus, where Bob sits with Louise. Rudy may be hungry for more life after tasting quite the adventure that day, but Louise might have been the one to put herself out there more, as she takes the name “Louise’s Burgers” into consideration for when she runs the restaurant and calls Bob “Daddy” like she used to do.

Chanting for Dummies
Linda might have thought that she’d enjoy the time off from being a volunteer, but it only makes her feel unneeded by her kids. Teddy talks her into going down to the museum anyway and closing the restaurant for the day, which she agrees with; before she can go into the museum, though, she runs into the picketers, a sad bunch of workers who aren’t exactly selling their rage, anguish, and demands for change. When they mention that they need her, she tries to help them revamp their chanting with talk of burning artifacts and pooping on fossils, only to get way too involved in the chanting and make it all about her.

Soon, the chants go from rousing museum-related demands and sayings to gibberish and talk of dropping pants, causing the workers to band together and kick her out of their picketing. She runs into Bob, Louise, and Rudy bolting for the bus before heading back home to wait for her family.

Additional thoughts and observations:
-“With great vest comes great responsibility.”
-“I can only blow it if you hold it!”
-“You remind me of my mom. She hates fun, too.”
-“I’ve never heard of anyone having a boob fetish.”
-“Your skin should be its own exhibit.”
-“We’re finally done with boobs!”
-“Oh, I hate you. But I love air.”
-Among the boobs that Zeek wanted to see were Viking and Eskimo. He also sees boobs in camel humps, mountains, and speed bumps, in addition to ruining Gene’s sand by pointing out that he unknowingly made boobs with his hands.
-Tina’s awkwardness will never not be great to me. I also kind of wanted her and Henry to fall in love over their dorkiness? I don’t know.
-Tina’s idea the title of her new erotic fan fiction: Ro-butts.
-Rudy was oddly sweet to me, for some reason. I’m glad that he got to chase a thrill for the afternoon, even though it nearly killed him in the process.
-Next week on Bob’s Burgers: On the third season finale, Gene is off to baseball camp, while Tina becomes a caffeine addict.

Beginning this summer, the comedy will have its first three seasons replayed, joining The Cleveland Show, American Dad, Family Guy, and King of the Hill as FOX animated shows airing on Adult Swim. Futurama, another FOX animated show with history on the network, moved to Comedy Central upon being resurrected from cancellation.

The move could help Bob’s Burgers improve its ratings performance from this season and prepare it to potentially assume the 8:00 slot when The Simpsons goes off the air. The show has already garnered a fair amount of critical love, earning its first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Series this past year, so with the added attention that will come from a high profile debut on Adult Swim, it could be solidify itself as a show that will run on the network for years to come. Although syndication has lost some of its luster due to DVRs, streaming services, and endless viewing options, it has provided some shows with life-extending boosts; fellow animated comedies Family Guy and Futurama were put back into production due to strong repeat numbers and DVD sales, while the likes of The Big Bang Theory, NCIS, House, and Law & Order: SVU have all greatly benefited from stripped syndication.

Featuring the voices of H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Eugene Mirman, Kristen Schaal, and Dan Mintz, Bob’s Burgers follows the Belcher family as they run their burger restaurant. The show has already been renewed for a fourth production cycle.

Bob’s Burgers airs Sundays at 8:30 on FOX. You can check out a recap of the most recent episode here.

Will having repeats airing during the summer help Bob’s Burgers come this fall? When The Simpsons goes off the air, is Bob’s in line to assume the 8:00 slot? How have you liked season three of the show as compared to the first two?

However, even though Tina has been practicing her concert scream, she won’t be getting to use it, due to an emergency involving Gayle’s cat that will keep their aunt from being able to drive her to the venue. While Tina’s distraught about not getting to see her favorite group, Louise doesn’t see the big deal about boy bands and is creeped out by the idea of 42-year-old women being superfans of teenage boys. Tina’s down mood doesn’t do anything for Louise, as she wasn’t the cause, so she decides to get her sister to the concert the best way she knows how: her bike.

On the way there, they run into Zeek and his cousin Leslie (who loves rhymes and pasta from a can), who are going to the concert to sell bootleg t-shirts and hot dogs. Louise offers to pay them gas money if they let her and Tina hitch a ride, which they do. On the way, Tina tries to educate Louise on the members of the group: black-haired Griffin is the hot one, Allen is the cute, shy one whose fanbase is known as the Allen-caholics, Matt is the moody older one with a mustache, and Boo Boo is the youngest, a crazy dancer with a good voice. Again, though, Louise is very apathetic.

At the concert venue, Tina gets faint and Louise has to help her to her seat; the youngest Belcher promises to leave as soon as she gets Tina all the way there. But before she can go back to Zeek and Leslie, the concert starts with the boys riding in on wire harnesses while “riding” various things: a surfboard, a scooter, roller blades, and a unicycle. During the entire entrance, Louise makes fun of the group, but it’s when Boo Boo does his intro that she notices something different. She has her very first crush.

Louise then runs into the bathroom to dump cold water in her face and try to get herself not to like Boo Boo. It doesn’t work, though, as she’s surrounded by merchandise with his face and fans talking about how cute his is, so she decides to indulge herself and pester Tina for information about him. Tina figures out that Louise has a crush and tries to tell her that it’s okay that she does, going over a list of things her sister likes about the young boy (who has yet to hit puberty), including his hair that she wants to hang under like an umbrella and his hideous, beautiful face that she wants to slap.

Once the concert is over, the two see girls lined up to go backstage and Louise wants to do that, going as far as imitating Kyra Sedgwick’s Brenda Lee Johnson from The Closer and claiming to be sick to get exclusive access. Unfortunately, they’re not allowed back, although they get an idea: the tour bus. Tina and Louise sneak on and hide in the hamper, thinking that they’ll get autographs (Tina wants Griffin to sign her eyelids) and other things (Louise still wants to slap Boo Boo) for their trouble. To their surprise the bus begins moving, but they’re found out once Boo Boo is put in his booster seat. While Louise does get her slap in, Tina walks away with a couple of clothing souvenirs for her troubles, plus a ride home from Aunt Gayle. During the ride, Louise expresses admiration for Tina not going crazy over having so many crushes and tells her sister that this is the last time she’ll be having a crush.

Table Scaping 4 Dummies
Gene has made it to the regional finals in table scaping, the only non-athletic extracurricular activity his school offers. Table scaping combines table setting with themes and costumes, which Gene defeated Andy and Ollie in by creating a “Dump Up the Volume” dinner, complete with dump truck bus boy. While Linda hits the mini-croissant bar, Gene and Bob scope out the competition, including Oscar, whose Marilyn Monroe scene looks quite intimidating. Fortunately, Gene came prepared with a magic-themed table, complete with ice cream shazam-wiches, and makes it to the top four with Oscar. However, he didn’t read far enough in the rules to notice that he had to have a second table ready to prepare.

By this time, Bob and Linda have gone from preparing their son from the let down of losing to thinking that he has a shot, so they scramble to figure out what they can do for the table. Linda dumps her purse out and comes up with a “Lady of the Night” meal that features lipstick, pepper spray, and baby carrots, though it’s ultimately rejected. So what was Gene’s second table?

The Menstruant, a table that consisted of tampons and strawberry jam. It pales in comparison to Oscar’s moon-scape, landing him in fourth place, but that’s not so bad for two reasons. Oscar didn’t win, either, so it’s like the Belchers did win, and none of the kids had every gotten fourth place in anything. Satisfied with how everything went down, Gene is already thinking about next year’s competition. The theme? Baby Jessica, where you search for your meal for two days while the nation watches.

Additional thoughts and observations:
-“I don’t set where I eat.”
-“I’ve never ridden with this many hot dogs before.”
-“Ugh, no wonder no one likes women.”
-“I wanna give him things!”
-“He lives in a shell and he’s cute as hell.”
-“Slapabama, here we come!”
-“Is booster seat code for drugs?”
-“I put my bra on one boob a time like everybody else.”
-I like how this episode brought Louise closer to a realistic pre-teen girl. I’m all for her budding sociopathic tendencies and think that she can be a pretty great character, but she was becoming a bit too broad for an animated show this grounded.
-Gayle pooped her pants at the cell phone store, which I hope they show an actual flashback to someday.
-Great Louise moments in this episode: her trying to do Tina’s signature groan, her Brenda Lee Johnson impression (which almost literally killed me), and the horrified scream when she realizes she likes Boo Boo.
-If you want an encapsulation of what I like about Bob’s Burgers, it’s Tina sleeping with the clothes on her head and Linda not commenting on it. She accepts her kids as they are, weirdness and all, and it’s really refreshing to have a mom like that on TV.
-I didn’t get the full line, but I loved Tina suggesting they hide in the bus’ microwave and Louise telling her that “yeah, maybe if we were six inches tall”. Amazing.
-Leslie and Zeek now have an endangered box turtle. Lord help it.
-Next week on Bob’s Burgers: Bob bonds with Louise during a school field trip, while Gene’s on the hunt for exhibits that feature female anatomy, Tina questions her dorkiness, and Linda chants along with striking museum workers.

However, Bob accidentally cuts his hand during a chaotic day at the restaurant and has to have Linda take him to the hospital, since he immediately becomes woozy and couldn’t drive himself. They tell the kids to go upstairs and wait for them to come back home, closing the restaurant for a few hours in the process, but Louise immediately gets bored, rejects babysitter Tina’s attempts at operating a pretend restaurant, and achieves her goal when the three open up the restaurant. Tina and Gene fight over what they should serve (kale and treadmills vs. chicken) before Louise offers a new perspective – gambling.

The three decide to open up a casino named The Meat Grinder in their basement; Andy and Ollie handle PR, Zeek acts as the bouncer, the Mathletics geeks work as the dealers, Tina is in charge of hospitality (hot towels, drinks, etc.), and Gene entertainment. He’ll be debuting the new girl group that he formed at school known as The Cutie Patooties, made up of Misty Gish, Dottie Minerva, and Girl #3. While they plan how to perform, since they never rehearsed and the girl Gene designated lead singer can’t carry a tune, the casino gets very lively, with Louise having to kick out someone for using hand signals and comfort a boy who lost his allowance playing one of the board games. It’s then that Mr. Fischoeder comes into the basement after stopping by to use the bathroom, only he doesn’t get them in trouble or break anything up. He decides to join in on the action, losing badly before picking up rock, paper, scissors and going on a winning streak that draws Louise’s attention.

Facing the emergence of Girl #3 as their new lead singer, The Cutie Patooties break up, citing the need to focus on glitter sticks, pets, and the art of french braiding. As a result, the casino doesn’t have any entertainment, though Gene thinks he can be a girl group all by himself and immediately puts on a pink sparkly dress and belts out some “Girls Bein’ Girls”. However, all the attention is on Louise and Mr. Fischoeder engaging in a fierce game of Roshambo that the youngest Belcher can’t seem to win. Eventually, she racks up a $5,000 debt, but before Mr. Fischoeder can collect, Bob returns from the hospital. With Fischoeder not backing down on collecting the debt and threatening to raise the rent $1,000 for the next five months, Louise talks him into engaging in a double-or-nothing throw, even with his injured hand.

Bob throws scissors, since Fischoeder wouldn’t be expecting it due to the spot of the injury, and erases his debt when his landlord throws paper. Unfortunately, Bob rips open his stitches and has to go back to the hospital.

Hospital Hell
Since Bob cut himself on his “finger crotch” (the area in between two fingers), he goes to the hospital with Linda, which turns out to be incredibly crowded and full of people much worse off than he was. Everyone has a cough, a broken limb, or some form of communicable disease that makes finding a good seat difficult and nearly causes Linda to throw up. However, they get called back before anything happens and find that Bob’s the first patient ever for young Dr. Igerman, who only recently got to examine patients without an aide to help him. Linda’s quite taken with the doctor and gets Bob to take a picture of them to send to his mother, who texts during the appointment, a lack of focus that results in Bob passing out again and waking up with his whole forearm bandaged. On the way home, he bleeds through his bandages and ends up squirting blood on Linda, leading them to go back to the hospital; they then head home, where the find the kids having their casino and Bob, again, rips his stitches open, leading him to head to the hospital yet again.

Additional thoughts and observations:
-“Yay! Feet week!”
-“I just went pee! This is a disaster!”
-‘The kids are running Bob’s Burgers and this time, it’s personal.”
-“I wanna breast feed that face.”
-“I should gamble against children more often.”
-“Any outcome is possible, Tina. Life is chaos.”
-The business from the opening credits: Nothin’ but Notaries. The burger of the day: Top Butt Burger.
-I wonder if we’ll see Gene’s son Gumhead in any future episodes.
-I kind of wish that the “Gene forms a girl group” subplot would have been the B-story of another episode because it had a lot of possibilities and just kind of petered out. However, what they did give was very funny.
-Linda calls Louise her little Omarosa.
-Should Bob’s Burgers ever do a flash forward episode, here’s hoping they show Louise with a gambling problem. She got very intense this episode, even moreso than normal.
-Next week on Bob’s Burgers: Louise develops a crush on the lead singer of a boy band.
