Normally, the network waits until a few weeks after their new dramas premiere in order to make decisions like this, but The CW is said to be very happy with the completed episodes they’ve seen of each series. While a script order doesn’t always translate to an episode order, this is a positive sign for both The Flash and Jane the Virgin, both of whom are generating especially strong reviews for The CW.

From Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg, and Geoff Johns (Arrow), The Flash follows brilliant forensic scientist Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) as he becomes obsessed with his tragic past and alienates himself from those around him. While trying to uncover the truth about his mother’s murder, he gets struck by lightning and emerges from a nine-month coma with the ability to move at superhuman speeds. Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, The Flash stars Candice Patton (The Guest), Danielle Panabaker (Friday the 13th), Carlos Valdes (Arrow), Tom Cavanagh (Ed), and Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order).

Adapted from Venezuelan telenovela Juana la virgin by Jennie Snyder Urman (Reign), Jane the Virgin tells the story of hard-working 20-something Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez), whose plans for the future are seemingly decimated when a doctor inseminates her by mistake during what was to be a routine checkup. The biological father? A married cancer survivor who’s also Jane’s boss and former teenage crush. Jane the Virgin stars Justin Baldoni (The Forgotten Ones), Brett Dier (Ravenswood), Andrea Navedo (How to Make It in America), Yael Grobglas (Reign), and Ivonne Coll (Teen Wolf).

The Flash is set to premiere Tuesday, October 7th at 8:00 on The CW, with Jane the Virgin debuting Monday, October 13th at 9:00. You can check out trailers for each below.

Will you be watching either, neither, or both of The Flash and Jane the Virgin? Do you think The CW will order a full season of each new drama? Is Jane the Virgin going to be able to fit into a lineup that’s skewing very heavily toward genre dramas?

The series, which was revived last summer to record ratings, will add another 24 episodes to the 24 it produced this past season, though a premiere date and time for the new cycle will be announced at a later date.

The network has used Whose Line as a way to shore up sort spots in their schedule and hold up their comedic programming in wake of genre dramas taking over the rest of the schedule. This past season, the series was paired with Hart of Dixie, the lightest drama on the network and the most incongruous with the rest of their schedule, while this summer, it’s been tasked with helping Beauty and the Beast, Seed, and Backpackers. Rather than giving Whose Line a break, since the show has been airing a heavy mix of reruns and originals for much of the last year, The CW is hoping that Aisha Tyler and company can improve their Friday schedule, as Whose Line is paired with fellow unscripted series America’s Next Top Model.

It’s a risky strategy, leaning this heavily on something that’s not a ratings giant. Whose Line might be the most cost-effective series on The CW when its ratings are looked at against its budget, but it’s not a juggernaut and doesn’t have that far to fall before it’s less an asset and more a liability. Should the show be towering over the rest of The CW programming similar to how The Voice dominated NBC for seasons, playing it as much as they have would be understandable; what The CW is risking, though, is dulling the impact of a valuable piece of programming and not using it to its greatest potential, particularly when it comes to their lackadaisical fall schedule.

Whose Line is it Anyway? currently airs Mondays at 8:30 on The CW. You can check out a preview of the next episode, set to feature Big Bang Theory star Kunal Nayyar, below.

Will you be watching Whose Line is it Anyway? next season? Do you think The CW is on the verge of overplaying the show and dulling its ratings effectiveness? Who else would you like to see guest star on Whose Line?

Two nights will be exactly the same from as they were in spring, with The 100 sticking with Arrow and Reign with The Vampire Diaries, while Whose Line will bleed into fall with America’s Next Top Model. The change is reserved for Mondays and Tuesdays, where The Originals is moved and paired with freshman dramedy Jane the Virgin and spin-off The Flash gets a chance to air along with Supernatural. The latter was expected to move, given its elasticity as a series and how loyal a fan base it has, but with FOX using Gotham on Mondays and ABC moving SHIELD to Tuesdays at 9:00, this was one of the few arrangements that made sense of The CW.

New shows are capitalized, with final seasons noted as such. Trailers should be released later today.

MONDAY
8:00 The Originals
9:00 JANE THE VIRGIN

TUESDAY
8:00 THE FLASH

WEDNESDAY
For their part, The CW commenced with some blood-letting today, canceling two freshman dramas and one sophomore dramedy.

First to meet the blade is The Carrie Diaries, a prequel of sorts to the HBO series Sex and the City. Season one averaged a meager 0.5 rating, so it was widely seen as a bit of a shock that Diaries even squeaked out a season two renewal at all. Things went nowhere but down the second time out, with Diaries’ average rating falling to a 0.3.

Next up on the chopping block is sci-fi romance Star-Crossed, which has seemed destined for cancellation almost since the beginning. Star-Crossed premiered to decidedly mixed reviews and an 0.5 rating, and quickly bottomed out at a 0.3, where it has remained ever since. The CW was likely hoping Star-Crossed would be their Roswell, but alas, it was not to be.

Finally, the award for most surprising cancellation of the day goes to The Tomorrow People. A modern-day remake of a 1970s British series, Tomorrow follows a group of young adults that find themselves persecuted due to their naturally evolved psychic powers.

Starring Robbie Amell (brother of Arrow star Stephen Amell), Tomorrow picked up a passionate fanbase, and its ratings for the first half of its run really weren’t too bad. Unfortunately, things eventually started to crater, and an ill-fated move to Mondays after Star-Crossed did the show no favors. Sadly, these particular people won’t live to see tomorrow.

Did The CW make the right call? Or should one or more of The Carrie Diaries, Star-Crossed, and The Tomorrow People have gotten picked up for another season? Let us know in the comments.

Also returning June 2nd is Beauty and the Beast, with the final episodes of its second season premiering at 9:00.

The new series premiering this summer on The CW are Famous in 12, where a family moves to Los Angeles with the goal of getting famous; Backpackers, a comedy that originated on CW Seed, the network’s digital portal; Seed, a Canadian import abut an underachieving sperm donor; Penn & Teller: Fool Us, where aspiring magicians try and fool world-famous Penn & Teller using their best tricks; and Masters of Illusion, a showcase of magic and illusion hosted by Dean Cain.

Not receiving a premiere date at this time are Barber Battle, a reality-competition series hosted by Cedric the Entertainer, and America’s Next Top Model, whose 21st cycle will feature the return of original mentor Miss J. Top Model didn’t have a premiere date for its last cycle announced until June, so it might be a while before we know when to expect more of Tyra and company.

Not returning from last summer are Capture, Perfect Score, and Oh Sit!.

What will you be watching on The CW this summer? Would you like to see Top Model back as a fall show? Should The CW be moving Whose Line around as much as they are?

“Since launching last year, one of our missions for CW Seed was for it to serve as an incubator for new talent and new ideas,” said Rick Haskins, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Digital Programs, The CW. “We’re very excited to see Backpackers turn from a short-form digital series into a full-length broadcast television show, and we are continuing to look at CW Seed for other possibilities to transform content and for creative new ways of doing business.”

Starring Noah Reid (Titanic) and Dillon Casey (Nikita), Backpackers follows best friends Ryan and Brandon as they search for the former’s missing fiancée and deal with the questions facing all twenty-somethings – what they want out of their lives, who they want to be, etc. In the process of trying to find his bride-to-be, aspiring writer Ryan’s journal ends up being posted online, putting him as close as he’s ever been to his dream of being a published author. Now all he has to do is track down the person who stole the journal in the first place, but along the way, he parties with Brandon and Brandon’s slacker brother Andrew (Giacomo Giannioti) all the way from Thailand to Canada. Will Ryan ever be able to find the journal if he’s not entirely focused on getting it back?

You can get a look at CW Seed, the network’s hub for original online content, here. A sample of Backpackers, which joins a growing summer slate for The CW that includes Famous in 12 and Masters of Illusion, is below.

Do you think Backpackers will be able to find an audience on-air? Could we see more web series make the leap from digital to on-air if Backpackers does well? Is this the show to put The CW on the road to a comedy bloc in a future season?

The following week, fellow freshman drama Star-Crossed will close out its season, this time at 8:00.

The Tuesday dramas will also be concluding their 2013-2014 runs a week apart, with The Originals drawing to a close on May 13th at 8:00 and Supernatural‘s ninth season going out with a bang on May 20th at 9:00. Arrow will conclude its third season on Wednesday, May 14th at 8:00, with midseason drama The 100 stretching its way into June with a first season finale on June 11th at 9:00. The Thursday dramas will be the only CW pairing that ends on the same night, as The Vampire Diaries and Reign will have their respective season finales on Thursday, May 15th. The lone remaining series, Hart of Dixie, will end its third season on Friday, May 16th at 9:00.

No date has been set for the resumption of Beauty and the Beast‘s second season, though The CW has announced that two-part miniseries Labyrinth will air Thursday, May 22nd and Friday, May 23rd. The project, which stars the likes of Katie McGrath and Tom Felton, chronicles the journeys of two women separated by centuries as they hunt for The Holy Grail.

Season finale dates for ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX should all be released in the coming weeks, likely around the time we get summer schedules for each network.

Which CW finale are you most looking forward to? Of the currently unrenewed shows (Hart of Dixie, Beauty and the Beast, The Carrie Diaries, Star-Crossed, The 100, and The Tomorrow People), which do you think make it to another season? Are you surprised that talk of the end of the season has already begun?

“This season we’ve had great success with our new hit series The Originals paired with Supernatural, giving us our best Tuesday nights in years,” said CW president Mark Pedowitz in a statement. “The Vampire Diaries is No. 2 in its time period in the young adult demos, and with Arrow continuing to gain among young men, and Reign growing its time period, we now have strong nights on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I’m very pleased to announce early pickups for all five series, and let our fans know they’ll have more great drama to look forward to next season.”

Thus far this season, The CW is up 14% in the 18-49 demo vs. last season, as well as 3% in total viewers, thanks to a strong rookie class that includes The Originals and Reign. Without an early renewal are Hart of Dixie, The Carrie Diaries, The Tomorrow People, and Beauty and the Beast, though Hart and Tomorrow will likely have their fates decided after moving to their new nights later in the season. Carrie and Beauty are in more precarious positions, the former due to already concluding its second season and the latter due to a hiatus that begins next month and extends into May.

The CW will be unveiling its 2014-2015 schedule Friday, May 16th. It’s possible that additional early renewals will be granted, but it’s more likely that the fates of the shows mentioned will be revealed closer to the upfront presentation.

Which of Hart of Dixie, The Carrie Diaries, The Tomorrow People, and Beauty and the Beast will be renewed for next season? What type of shows would you like The CW to develop for 2014-2015? Are you surprised at how strongly The Originals and Reign have performed this season?
