‘The Following’ Casts ‘Almost Human’s Michael Ealy as New Villain

FOX certainly didn’t earn itself any fans in the sci-fi community when it opted to cancel Almost Human earlier this year, despite its average ratings being higher than many other renewed shows on the network. Sadly, that injustice still has yet to be rectified, but Almost Human fans can at least take solace in the fact that co-lead Michael Ealy is moving on to bigger, if not necessarily better things.

With murderous cult leader Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) now presumably back in FBI custody, The Following’s tortured hero Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) now finds himself in need of a new nemesis. That’s where Ealy will come in. The former sympathetic android has been cast as a brilliant, chameleon-like serial killer, one that soon attracts the attention of Ryan. This represents a noted departure for Ealy, who usually plays characters operating on the good side of the law.

What exactly this development means for Joe Carroll’s future as a character on The Following is anyone’s guess, as producers have yet to offer any comment on just how involved James Purefoy will be with the horror/drama’s third season, which marks the end of series creator Kevin Williamson’s tenure as showrunner. Purefoy is indeed signed up to return, but he could very well find himself playing the imprisoned Hannibal Lecter to Ryan’s Will Graham, instead of The Following’s main antagonist.

The focus being taken off of Joe Carroll and his cult may actually end up being a blessing in disguise for The Following, as many fans felt that season two was too similar to season one, and often pushed the limits of credulity when it came to Joe’s seemingly worldwide influence.

Fox Pulls Tuesday Utopia, Moves MasterChef Junior

According to The Hollywood Reporter, FOX has pulled the Tuesday edition of reality series Utopia effective immediately. The series, which brings together 15 people of different backgrounds and forces them to build their own functioning society, will be replaced by animated encores and FOX’s coverage of the World Series until reality-competition MasterChef Junior premieres in November. The cooking competition was a surprise hit last season on Fridays, thereby earning itself a renewal, while Utopia will now air exclusively on Fridays.

The move doesn’t come as a surprise considering the negative buzz and poor ratings for Utopia. After posting mediocre numbers in a special Sunday preview, the series has floundered on both Tuesdays and Fridays, putting FOX in fourth place in the time slot and possibly harming comedies New Girl and The Mindy Project. This way, the show can concentrate its audience and FOX doesn’t have to worry about falling to fifth place this coming Tuesday when The CW’s likely potent Flash/Supernatural lineup premieres.

The first new fall series to premiere this season, Utopia becomes the first new fall show to be pulled, though it might be able to avoid becoming the first outright cancellation if it can post some decent Friday numbers. The show recently instituted a voting-out process designed to rid itself of some of the characters that drew negative buzz upon the show’s initial airings.

Empire: Naomi Campbell to Recur

According to The Hollywood Reporter, model/actress Naomi Campbell is set to recur on upcoming FOX hip-hop drama Empire. She’ll be playing alluring Camilla, who begins a relationship with much younger Hakeem and begins exerting considerable influence over him.

Created by Lee Daniels (Precious), Empire follows music CEO Lucious Lyons (Terrence Howard) as he grapples with a devastating medical diagnosis. Told he has only three years before being fully incapacitated, Lyons must decide which of his three sons will take over the company he built from the ground up – Andre (Trai Byers), who lacks the charisma necessary to take the company to the next level; Jamal (Jussie Smollett), a sensitive musician who shies away from the spotlight; and Hakeem (Bryshere Gray), a spoiled playboy who doesn’t have the maturity or the work ethic to follow in his father’s footsteps. Putting pressure on Lucious is the fact that ex-wife Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) just got out of prison after doing nearly two decades and she’s not exactly happy to see him, not after feeling as if he snaked the company away from her and forced her to do the bid that had his name all over it.

This will be Campbell’s first series television credit since a 2003 episode of action drama Fastlane. Her most extensive television role was a six-episode stint on New York Undercover, where she played Simone Jeffers, underling of drug kingpin Danny Cort.

Empire is slated to premiere sometime in 2015 on FOX.

Sleepy Hollow 2.02 Photos and Sneak Peeks: Crane and Abbie Plot an Escape Route

Ichabod and Abbie managed to reunite after being incapacitated by Jeremy, with the former using his knowledge of science to free himself from the coffin and the latter getting some necessary advice from Brooks on how to handle purgatory. However, just because the two are now mobile in the outside world doesn’t mean that they’re in an overly advantageous position against the Horseman, not when two members of their team are still up against the wall. As Irving’s legal position might not be easily amended, their focus has now shifted to the more high priority target: Katrina, who is still trapped in a carriage house overseen by Abraham.

On the next episode of Sleepy Hollow, Abbie and Ichabod come up with a way to free Katrina from her confinement, as they resurrect a Frankenstein-like creation of Ben Franklin in order to fight the Horseman. It’s quick a risky gambit, seeing as how they don’t have a back-up plan should the creature lose, but they have to think outside the box if they have any hope of freeing Katrina and getting a much needed victory against both Jeremy and the Horseman. Not only would securing Katrina give both Abbie and Ichabod the moral victory that they need to keep going, her powers would become quite the weapon in the fight against the Horseman, allowing the team the type of latitude they didn’t have while she was in purgatory.

Elsewhere on Sleepy Hollow, Irving reveals what really happened during his encounter with the demon, thereby causing himself even more problems, while Jenny finds herself at odds with the new sheriff of Sleepy Hollow.

Sleepy Hollow airs Mondays at 9:00 on FOX.

Empire: Gladys Knight to Recur

Deadline is reporting that recording star Gladys Knight has signed on for a role on upcoming FOX drama Empire. She’ll potentially recur as herself on the music industry drama, which will give her the opportunity to sing.

Created by Oscar winner Lee Daniels (Precious), Empire tells the story of music CEO Lucious Lyon (Oscar nominee Terrence Howard), as he learns that he has a disease that will leave him crippled and incapacitated within the next three years. Desperate to continue his reign in the music industry, he must now decide which member of his inner circle will be given the reigns to Empire Entertainment, the company he guided to greatness – eldest son Andre (Trai Byers), the CFO of Empire who lacks the charisma Lucious deems necessary for the position; middle son Jamal (Jussie Smollett), who shies away from the spotlight and whose sexuality confounds his father; youngest son Hakeem(Bryshere Gray), a spoiled playboy with not much in the way of work ethic; and ex-wife Cookie (Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson), who demands a share of the company she helped co-found when she reemerges following a prison sentence.

Knight’s acting career has included a stint on syndicated comedy The First Family, a role in Tyler Perry film I Can Do Bad All By Myself, and a guest appearance on 30 Rock, where she played herself, as well.

Empire is slated to premiere midseason on FOX, with a concrete premiere date expected to be announced either late this year or early next. You can check out the trailer for the series below.

Sleepy Hollow 2.01 Sneak Peeks: Who Does Abbie Meet in Purgatory?

Rather than force Katrina to go back into the hellish purgatory that she just escaped, Abbie opted to go in her place, both as a gesture to her friendship with Ichabod and a realization that Katrina’s magic would be better used out in the open. However, Abbie now has to find her way out of purgatory without falling victim to the demon that first visited her as a child and she unknowingly has to do this without the aide of Crane. But could someone Abbie runs into while trying to get her wits about her provide the key to getting her out of the prison she willingly locked herself in?

On tonight’s season premiere of Sleepy Hollow, Abbie runs into Brooks while in purgatory and though she’s initially hesitant to trust him, given everything he’s done since aligning with Moloch, she knows that there’s not much in the way of options where she is. Andy was once a friend and he gives her enough information (this time about Moloch’s planned demon army invading Sleepy Hollow) that she can’t afford to take for granted. While a quick escape for Abbie might not be in the cards right now, considering Moloch’s increasing strength and the amount of time it takes to free someone from purgatory, Brooks can get messages to the outside world and round up the troops to retrieve his former friend from her terrifying tomb. But after Abbie gets out of purgatory, will she trust Andy, assuming he helps her return to the outside world? Or has he done too much for her to be able to put her faith in?

Elsewhere on Sleepy Hollow, Katrina tries to trick the Horseman in order to free herself, while Crane remains trapped in Jeremy’s coffin and Irving looks for ways to get himself out of jail for a crime he didn’t commit.

Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Spoilers: Ichabod and Abbie Attempt to Save Katrina

At the end of the first season of Sleepy Hollow, the fate of the world looked to be quite bleak, with Ichabod trapped in a coffin, Abbie isolated in purgatory, Jenny on the edge of death after being in a car crash, Katrina kidnapped by the Headless Horseman, and Frank in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. All the work that Ichabod and Abbie did in order to protect the town, as well as the world at large, seemed like it was for naught, with the two having been tricked by the man they knew as Henry Parrish, Sin Eater. However, Ichabod and Abbie are nothing if not resilient, so just because they’re in what looks to be an impossible situation doesn’t mean that the apocalypse is an inevitability; they just have a few more steps to go to get back to where they were and beat back the coming threat that could swallow Sleepy Hollow whole.

Listed below are the dates, titles, and descriptions of the first three episodes of Sleepy Hollow‘s second season.

Monday, September 22nd – “This Is War” (Season Premiere)
Picking up immediately after the spellbinding events of the Season One finale, Ichabod finds himself buried alive in a coffin; Abbie is trapped in purgatory; Ichabod’s wife, Katrina, has been kidnapped by the Headless Horseman; Capt. Frank Irving is behind bars for a murder he did not commit; and Abbie’s sister, Jenny, is among the wreckage of a horrific car crash. These events were due, in large part, to the shocking revelation that Henry Parish, the trusted friend of Ichabod and Abbie, is actually Ichabod and Katrina’s son and the Second Horseman of the Apocalypse. Now, with Henry’s emergence as the Horseman of War, alongside the Headless Horseman, Sleepy Hollow has never been so close to destruction.

Monday, September 29th – “The Kindred”
Ichabod Crane and Lt. Abbie Mills concoct a daring plan to try to rescue Ichabod’s wife, Katrina, from the Headless Horseman by resurrecting a Frankenstein-like monster created by Benjamin Franklin. Meanwhile, Frank Irving faces new trouble after revealing the true details of his encounter with a demon, and Jenny Mills finds herself at odds with the new sheriff in town.

Monday, October 6th – “Root of All Evil”
After a bank robbery turns violent, Abbie and Ichabod embark on a hunt for a mysterious silver coin that has more power than meets the eye. Meanwhile, Captain Frank Irving is put in a position where he must choose between his family and the greater good and the Mills’ sisterly bond is put to the utmost test.

Red Band Society Series Premiere Sneak Peeks: We Band of Brothers

Though your teenage years are said to be the best of your life, a time when you get to explore who you are without having any of the responsibilities of adulthood, they’re more often defined by fraught emotions, identity crises, peer pressure, and the struggle to find your identity while conforming enough to the norm so as to avoid being ridiculed. Being a teenager is inherently tough and any outside circumstances can only make things more difficult.

On the series premiere of Red Band Society, a group of teenagers live together in a hospital pediatric wing and try to find some sense of normalcy. Their setting might be different than the average person their age, but the kids living in Ocean Park Hospital all experience much of what they would had they not gotten sick – they find love, they try to figure out who they are, they question everything from mortality to their futures should they come out on top against their respective ailments. While there are pivotal events they’re missing out on by being where they are, the hospital environment might not be the obstacle to social growth and self-actualization that it might seem to be at first glance.

The series premiere of Red Band Society is set to premiere Wednesday, September 17th at 9:00 on FOX.

Sleepy Hollow Season 2 Premiere Photos: The Town Edges Toward Destruction

Ever since Ichabod and Abbie began working together, they’ve made quite the progress toward understanding their true mission, finding the type of common ground necessary to help their working relationship, and saving the world from the threats that seek to destroy it. However, as quickly as they were learning about what was expected of them as guardians, neither of them were able to pick up on the fact that the Sin Eater was Ichabod’s son Jeremy – the Second of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. That lack of awareness threatens to undo all of the good that Ichabod and Abbie have done since they first teamed up, but will either Ichabod or Abbie escape their precarious positions in order to stop War from enveloping Sleepy Hollow?

On the season premiere of Sleepy Hollow, the town edges toward destruction now that Jeremy has free reign. While Ichabod is trapped in a coffin similar to the one that his son was for two centuries, he’s unable to help Abbie escape purgatory, free Katrina from the grasp of the Horseman, or pull Jenny from the car crash that she was involved in. If Ichabod doesn’t find a way to escape the coffin, his resurrection will have been for naught, as there would be no one standing between the Horsemen and the beginning of the apocalypse; whether he likes it or not, Ichabod will be one of the defenders of the world for the next several years, giving him a sense of purpose that outweighs how lost he feels in this new world that he’s been brought up in. In order to continue living in, exploring, and protecting this world, he’s got to free himself and find ways to rescue those he loves the most from the fates that his son played a part in facilitating.

The second season of Sleepy Hollow premieres Monday, September 22nd at 9:00 on FOX.

Red Band Society: Mandy Moore to Recur

According to The Hollywood Reporter, actress/singer Mandy Moore (Grey’s Anatomy) is slated to recur on upcoming FOX dramedy Red Band Society. She’s set to play Erin Grace, the chief of staff at the hospital the series is set at. Her character will also serve as Dr. McAndrew’s (Dave Annable) ex.

Created by Margaret Nagle (Boardwalk Empire), Red Band Society tells the story of a group of teenagers living in the pediatric wing of a hospital. Though they might not be able to have exactly the same experiences as their peers, they’re still exposed to the same trials and tribulations that go along with being a teenager. The series stars Oscar winner Octavia Spencer (The Help), Charlie Rowe (The Golden Compass), Griffin Gluck (Back in the Game), Nolan Sotillo (Prom), and Ciara Bravo (Big Time Rush).

In addition to her memorable role on the ABC soap, Moore has appeared on the likes of Entourage and Scrubs while lending her voice to High School USA!, The Simpsons, and Sheriff Callie’s Wild West. She has also been a part of CBS pilots for the past two development seasons, though neither were picked up to series.
