“Stitchers is new ground for us and I’m excited to bring procedurals to the network,” said Tom Ascheim, President, ABC Family. “We think our fans will love the intricate mysteries that Stitchers will solve week to week as much as they love our relationship-driven dramas. We are also going back for seconds of our new comedy, Young & Hungry. Good food, good laughs – of course we want more.”

From Jeffrey A. Schechter (Overruled!), Stitchers tells the story of a young woman recruited by the government to be “stitched” into the minds of the recently deceased. She’ll use the memories of each person she finds herself in to help investigate their murders and decipher mysteries that wouldn’t have had a chance to be solved. Executive produced by Jonathan Baruch and Rob Wolken, Stitchers stars Diane Farr (Numb3rs), Emma Ishta (I Smile Back), Felix Gomez (Un lugar en el mundo), Kyle Harris (The Carrie Diaries), and Minni Jo Mazzola (Parks and Recreation).

Over the course of its 10-episode first season, which concluded late last month, Young & Hungry ranked as basic cable’s #1 telecast in its time period in Adults 18-34, and Women 18-34, as well as other key demos. From David Holden (The War at Home), the series follows the impact of a young entrepreneur (Jonathan Sadowski) hiring a feisty personal chef (Emily Osment). The series also stars the likes of Rex Lee (Suburgatory), Kym Whitley (I Love You, Man), and Aimee Carrero (The Americans), though there’s no word on when the second season would actually premiere.

Per Deadline, ABC Family has also formally cancelled Young & Hungry‘s lead-out Mystery Girls, confirming reports surfacing that the Tori Spelling comedy wouldn’t continue following its own 10-episode first season. A decision on fellow newbie Chasing Life, however, should be made sometime in early 2015, as the show will continue its first season this coming January.

It’s as yet unclear why Callie seeks the help of the drop-in facility. The most likely scenario is that it has to do with her delayed adoption and the complicated emotions she’s experiencing from her relationship with Brandon; being an unbiased third party, Rafael could give her the type of advice and perspective she needs to hear regarding Brandon and point her in the direction that she needs to go if she wants the adoption to be feasible in the future. Even though she has a right to be absolutely crushed by the stunt the Quinns pulled on her, Callie can’t afford to go into self-destruct mode and she might need someone without any ties to the situation to pull her back from the abyss before she goes over for good.

In addition to his role on the TNT procedural, De Diego has appeared on the likes of The Nine Lives of Chloe King, Awkward Universe, and Stone Jones vs. The Recession.

The second half of The Fosters‘ second season will premiere January 2015. A concrete premiere date should be released later this fall.

On the summer finale of The Fosters, Callie calls in a favor with Robert and gets him to host a fundraiser for Girls United. If they raise enough money, there’s the possibility that every girl from Girls United will get to leave juvie and come back together, but the chances of that get diminished when, as she’s putting together the fundraiser, Callie finds herself betrayed by someone she trusted. Not only will it impact the fundraiser and the lives of those the fundraiser stands to benefit, but it could negatively impact Callie’s relationship with Robert just when the two were getting closer. Will Callie be able to salvage the fundraiser, as well as her relationship with Robert, or is everything she worked for about to crumble around her?

Elsewhere on The Fosters, Lena makes a life-changing decision when she learns the extent of the pressure facing Connor, while Someone’s Little Sister is pushed to the brink by tensions between Brandon and Lou and Jesus is forced to evaluate his relationship with Hayley when he receives a visitor from his past.

The decision isn’t much of a surprise, considering that it took four months for the network to come to a decision about the show’s fate. ABC Family had a similar delay for Bunheads and The Lying Game last summer, a delay they said was to due to wanting to see how their new summer shows did, with the same result – both veterans were cancelled while then-newcomers Twisted and The Fosters received episode extensions.

Twisted was also hamstrung by the fact that Ravenswood failed to take off in the fall. Rather than get to air the second half of its season with its fellow mystery series, the series had its season 1B debut delayed one month and had to air episodes without an original lead-in, leading its ratings to plummet. With the delay likely pushing any new episodes of Twisted into 2015, Avan Jogia taking the lead role in an upcoming Spike TV miniseries, and three promising pilots in development, ABC Family opted to take the ratings weakness they saw as gospel and end the series without a concrete finale.

Created by Adam Milch, Twisted followed 16-year-old Danny Desai (Jogia), a boy sent to juvenile hall for five years following the death of his aunt, which he was blamed for. Once he returns to his hometown, he doesn’t exactly receive a welcoming reception, though he ultimately wins back his two best friends and looks to live the life that was taken away from him. In addition to Jogia, Twisted starred Maddie Hasson, Kylie Bunbury, Ashton Moio, and Denise Richards.

The final episode of Twisted aired this past April.

Switched at Birth is the first renewal decision ABC Family has made this month. While The Fosters and Chasing Life likely won’t have their fates determined until 2015, as they have the second halves of their second and first seasons, respectively, still to air, the fates of Twisted, Young & Hungry, and Mystery Girls are still up in the air. The former finished its first season this past April, while the latter two will culminate their first seasons later this month. There’s also the matter of the network’s three drama pilots, which include a brother-sister tennis story and the journey of an addict, with the shows going to series likely to be announced this month, as well.

On the summer finale of Chasing Life, Dominic returns from Europe and finds April in a much different place than she was when he left. The two are finally at a place of true honesty in their relationship, yet there’s a chance that her refusal to let him in about the diagnosis could breed some sort of resentment in him, to the point where he might not want to stick around to help her through the other side of the chemo. Dominic might be understanding about why April decided to keep the truth from him, as they weren’t together long and she wanted him to be able to live his dream, but even if he does decide to help April through her hellacious month of chemo, will he be able to shake off the fact that she withheld something so huge from him? Or will that mistrust come back to bite them sometime in the future?

The summer finale of Chasing Life airs Tuesday at 9:00 on ABC Family.

Or at least she thinks she’s figured out her issues, as an encounter with someone from her past strips away the work that she’s been doing and then some, leaving Callie feeling like she was before Lena and Stef took her in. Scared, angry, and looking to shut herself off from the world, this is when Callie can show that she’s a success story; if she can somehow deal with the negative emotions this encounter brings up and emerge on the other side without having to run away, she’ll show that Rita and the rest of Girls United were right about how far she’s come and about how much she’s learned in the past six months. Is Callie ready to tackle problems that would have sent her scurrying in the other direction even one year ago?

Not sure she can be cooped up in the hospital for much longer, April begins to panic. With her family by her side, April makes a surprising outreach to someone who may be the only person who can help her. Meanwhile, Dominic returns to a much different April then when he left.

Chasing Life airs Tuesdays at 9:00 on ABC Family. The series will return for a Christmas episode during ABC Family’s 25 Days of Christmas holiday event before beginning the second half of its first season this coming January.

On the next episode of The Fosters, Mariana and Hayley decide to make dinner for their double-date with Mat and Jesus. It’s a wonder that Mariana even accepted a date from Mat, seeing as how he’s antagonized her every time he’s been around her, yet she might be the one who messes things up if the dinner turns out poorly or if Jesus won’t let the two get to know one another. Mariana’s lack of cooking experience combined with her lack of experience in the dating world make this double-date all the more nerve-wracking, as she has to create a delicious meal and get over her anxiety around boys in order for the night to be somewhat worthwhile. If things turn out well, though, and Mat is on his best behavior, she might have found someone to spend time with if her position on the dance team grows more uncertain.

Elsewhere on The Fosters, Callie pays a visit to her friends at Girls United, while Stef receives a concerning letter from Ana and Brandon considers the possibility of therapy after what happened with Dani.
