Being Mary Jane: Salli Richardson-Whitfield to Recur

Deadline is reporting that Eureka alum Salli Richardson-Whitfield has signed on for a recurring role on BET romantic drama Being Mary Jane. She’s set to appear in at least five season two episodes as a long-time friend of Mary Jane’s. No other information has been released about who Richardson-Whitfield will be playing or how her friendship with Mary Jane will look.

Regardless of who Richardson-Whitfield is playing, though, her character should provide a sense of comfort for Mary Jane, who is coming off an emotionally draining time in her life that could cause her to slip into a bout of depression if she’s not careful. Mary Jane went through a lot with David and Andre and now that neither are in her life, she has to surround herself with loved ones and further throw herself into her work if she hopes to make it through the fraught post-breakup period. There’s also the matter of doing the work necessary to understand how things got as complicated as they did and how she can better prepare herself for the next big romance in her life, something that Richardson-Whitfield’s character could help with.

In addition to her role as Dr. Allison Blake on the Syfy dramedy, Richardson-Whitfield has appeared on the likes of The Newsroom, Criminal Minds, and House of Lies. She’s one of a few changes the series has made in its hiatus, as Mike Epps (The Hangover) will also recur and Stephen Bishop (Moneyball) was promoted from recurring to series regular.

The second season of Being Mary Jane premieres early next year on BET.

Being Mary Jane Season Finale Preview: Should Mary Jane Go After David?

Even though Mary Jane wanted to make things work with Andre, the differences between them and how complicated their situation was proved to be too much for her to handle and she broke things accordingly. They might have a strong connection between them and similar ideas of where they want to be in life, but timing was not on their side from the beginning, as Andre was still drowning in marital issues and Mary Jane grew tired of playing second fiddle in her own relationship. As emotionally draining as the past few months have been for her, Mary Jane is going to have to take a breath following her latest round of relationship drama and try to find a sense of peace that will help her heal from the wounds she recently suffered.

On the season finale of Being Mary Jane, there’s the little matter of David hanging over Mary Jane’s head. Arguably, their conversation at the gala was the leading facilitator in her breakup with Andre, despite David also revealing that he was seeing someone, and they have unfinished business between them that has to be resolved before Mary Jane can truly move on. While the majority of her time has been spent with Andre, David was a big part of the complication in Mary Jane’s love life and without a button being put on their time together, there are going to be questions that linger whenever she thinks about or sees him. Was she wrong for letting him go when she did? Is he in the right emotional/mental place to pursue a serious relationship? Could she handle coming between another man and his significant other?

Elsewhere on Being Mary Jane, Lisa’s friendship with Mary Jane is put to the test over Niecy, while Talk Back is suspended and Mary Jane struggles to put the pieces back together after breaking things off with Andre.

The two-hour season finale of Being Mary Jane airs Tuesday at 9:00 on BET.

Being Mary Jane 1.06 Preview: Will a Picture Ruin Mary Jane’s Relationship?

Mary Jane and Andre have had every opportunity to cease their relationship and go on about their respective lives. The secrecy that comes with being together should have been too much for them to handle, as neither one of them is able to live fully in the light, but the two feel strongly enough about one another to where they’re willing to put up with the hard times for the promise of the joy and openness to come. However, Mary Jane got a taste of what she was missing when she was at the gala with David and realized that she can’t go on living her life in the shadows, not when having to keep it all in is killing her inside.

On tonight’s episode of Being Mary Jane, Andre sees a picture of Mary Jane and David from the night of the gala and begins questioning whether she’s in this for the long haul or not. He argues that he’s already flipped his life upside down for her, but until his divorce is finalized, he doesn’t have a leg to stand on as far as issues of fidelity and commitment, especially when Mary Jane has sacrificed quite a bit herself to stick by him. If Andre is feeling insecure about their relationship, it’s a reflection of his own guilt for cheating on Avery and his own insecurities that caused him to stray in the first place; he’s worried that he’s going to get some type of karmic payback for being with Mary Jane and is looking for a reason to cut bait before becoming even more invested, but should he be giving up before he and Mary Jane have a chance at happiness?

Elsewhere on Being Mary Jane, Patrick decides to move out of the house and Niecy wants to move ahead with a risky medical procedure.

Being Mary Jane 1.05 Preview: Mary Jane Attends the Gala

One of the major drawbacks of being with Andre before the divorce from Avery gets finalized is that Mary Jane cannot be seen in public with the man she loves. With how prominent a media figure she is in Atlanta and how she hasn’t told her family about the relationship, there’s no way that the two can be seen arm-in-arm at one of the city’s premiere event, let alone something as simple as a lunch date or an afternoon movie. As much as Mary Jane may love Andre and be willing to stick by his side through the divorce, things are going to get worse before they get better.

On the next episode of Being Mary Jane, Mary Jane attends the gala and runs into David in the process. Had this type of meeting occurred in the not-so-distant past, her reaction might have been something positive, provided he atone for sleeping with other women on the side, but now that she has Andre waiting in the wings, Mary Jane doesn’t need David in her life. Though she may be lonely, she doesn’t want to be with someone who unapologetically sleeps with someone on the side and makes her look like a fool, meaning that her time at the event is going to be less celebratory and more awkward and tense. But will Mary Jane reconsider her position on David if he comes to her with promises of love, commitment, and togetherness? Or is she going to remain faithful to Andre as he gets his affairs in order?

Being Mary Jane 1.04 Preview: Andre Sends Mary Jane Mixed Messages

Mary Jane has risked quite a bit in having an affair with Andre, as her conservative family likely wouldn’t have anything else to do with her if they found out and she would be branded as an adulteress in the eyes of TV executives and viewers, spelling the end of her promising career if word got out that she was seeing a married man. But she’s put all this on the line due to the feelings she has for Andre; although she might not be ready to walk down the aisle just yet, she knows that he’s the one man who gets her and that the electricity that exists between the two isn’t there for no reason. However, one thing she hasn’t yet thought about is what Andre’s doing for her, what he’s sacrificing in order to be with her – and only her.

On the next episode of Being Mary Jane, Andre has continued to say all the right things to Mary Jane before going right back home to Avery, even bringing funny anecdotes that the two of them create back to Mary Jane when he needs a break from a life of domesticity. While she knows that he might not be able to leave Avery right now, it’s a whole other beast for Andre to flit back and forth between the two women without a care in the world, telling Mary Jane that she’s the only one for him while always choosing Avery over her. Mary Jane, meanwhile, has seemingly always put Andre above all else in her life, making his choice of repayment, actively boxing her in as his second choice and his fallback plan for when he’s horny or things get bad with Avery, all the more cutting. But is Mary Jane going to call him out on just how low he makes her feel?

Being Mary Jane 1.03 Preview: Mary Jane Gives Andre an Answer

When Mary Jane was a young girl and imagined what it would be like to be proposed to, she thought of rose petals, music, and sincere professions of love from a man who was all hers and always going to be hers. She would then start to cry, barely choke out a yes, and then embrace the man she was going to spend the rest of her life with, the next important journey of her life about to begin. But that’s not how things ultimately turned out, as her proposal came in a hotel room from a married man who hadn’t begun the proceedings to leave his wife, seemingly more of a gesture of his commitment to her than any real intention of getting her down the aisle. But despite the moral and legal complications an engagement with Andre would bring, will Mary Jane say yes?

On the next episode of Being Mary Jane, Mary Jane weighs everything she has to consider when it comes to accepting the proposal from Andre. On one hand, she truly does believe that he loves her, the two have the type of sexual chemistry that she hasn’t had with a man in a long time, and with the sound of her biological clock becoming much more apparent, her loneliness might caught her to seek the type of companionship she needs while she has the chance. However, on the other hand, she’ll always know the true origin of their relationship, she would have to lie to both her friends and her father about her past with Andre, and she couldn’t guarantee that he wouldn’t do the same thing to her that he did to Avery. As much as she might love Andre and want to be with someone in a long-term relationship, would Mary Jane be able to deal with the ghosts of their past lingering long after things with Avery are done?
