Bentley joins a cast that includes Bates, Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Frances Conroy, with Michael Chiklis being the other big addition for the season that’ll be known as Freak Show. More details should be released about the season, including what should be a flurry of new additions and the first of a series of cryptic teasers, in the coming weeks.

In addition to his role in the Oscar-winning Sam Mendes film, Bentley has appeared in The Hunger Games, The Four Feathers, and Ghost Rider. His stint on American Horror Story will be the first television credits in his 19-year career, though he’s currently attached to Ryan Murphy drama Open, still in contention for a slot on HBO’s schedule.

The fourth season of American Horror Story is set to premiere this fall on FX.

Season three of American Horror Story, which wrapped earlier this year, was a decided step down from American Horror Story: Asylum and proof that a fantastic concept doesn’t automatically mean a season will have coherency, forward narrative momentum, or dramatic tension. With its cast bursting at the seams and soon becoming too large to competently service, Coven proved to be muddled, aimless mess that wrote itself into a corner by not clearly defining its universe and opted to treat death as nothing more than a minor obstacle rather than an end, one of the greatest sins a horror series can make. If Freak Show is to be the bounce back season that the show needs, the season to keep it as the pop culture watercooler show that it’s been for three seasons, it has to learn from the mistakes of Coven and balance its love of horror tropes and campy one-liners with the fundamentals of running a television show. If it doesn’t find its footing, though, American Horror Story might face the scariest thing of all – cancellation.

What he, co-creator Brad Falchuk and their producers Dante Di Loreto, Tim Minear, Jennifer Salt, James Wong, Brad Buecker, Jessica Sharzer, Douglas Petrie, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, Alexis Martin Woodall, and the entire production team and cast responsible for the American Horror Story franchise have done is nothing short of extraordinary.”

What wasn’t revealed in the renewal announcement, though, was the creative direction of the fourth season, as American Horror Story reinvents itself every season in terms of story, setting, and character while keeping its cast mostly the same. Creator Ryan Murphy has indicated that the focus of the next season could be revealed in one of the final episodes of Coven, possibly in a similar way to how Asylum and Coven were revealed in their prior seasons, respectively. In response to lower ratings for Asylum, the auspices behind American Horror Story decided to make Coven lighter and more comedic in tone, but since the show tries to look and feel completely different from one season to the next, there’s a strong likelihood that we see American Horror Story edge back toward the darkness it thought it escaped.
