After spending its first five seasons paired with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the series will now be the lead-in for Ali G Rezurection, repackaged episodes of Da Ali G Show with new introductions by creator Sacha Baron Cohen.

Most interesting about the next season of The League is how the show does without its former lead-in and with the added attention FXX will receive from its acquisition of The Simpsons. While The League could drop a bit now that it’s standing on its own for the first time, there’s a strong likelihood that any decline could be curbed or even avoided by the addition of The Simpsons, something that might have the power to take FXX to the next level. Thus far in its run, FXX has been the home of wayward FX comedies, with Legit getting cancelled after one season on the network and the final season of Wilfred going out with a whimper and since there won’t be any FXX original scripted series until 2015, it’s up to The Simpsons to give the network the type of momentum in the last quarter of the year that it hasn’t generated on its own thus far.

Following a group of friends who compete in a fantasy football league every year, The League stars Stephen Rannazzisi (Paul Blart: Mall Cop), Katie Aselton (Black Rock), Mark Duplass (Tammy), Nick Kroll (Kroll Show), Paul Scheer (NTSF: SD: SUV::), and Jon Lajoie (Let’s Be Cops).

Will you be watching the sixth season of The League? Do you think the show can survive without It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia? What kind of impact do you think The Simpsons will have on the FXX lineup?

“Simon Rich has delivered a wholly original, hilarious and fantastical view of single life that features an incredible performance from Jay Baruchel,” said Nick Grad, President of Original Programming, FX Networks and FX Productions.. “We feel this is the perfect fit for FXX and are thrilled to pick up the show.”

Based on Simon Rich’s short story collection The Last Girlfriend on Earth, Man Seeking Woman follows Josh (Baruchel), a naïve romantic on a quest for love. Rich wrote the pilot and will serve as showrunner on the project, while the likes of Eric Andre (Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23), Britt Lower (Unforgettable), and Maya Erksine (Betas) will co-star.

Man Seeking Woman will be the first original comedy to premiere on FXX, a network that has previously only housed wayward FX comedies. While It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League have held their own with the network change, FXX needs to show that it’s more than encore programming, movies, and transplanted series, especially after projects previously earmarked for the network (e.g. Chozen) found their way to FX instead. FXX must find some type of network identity to set itself apart from FX and the rest of the television industry as a whole, something that Man Seeking Woman could provide in terms of tone, humor, and ambition; it helps that the network has a fairly full development slate with comedies from Zach Galifianakis, Charlie Kaufman, and Seth Rogen currently in the works, but still, it should be interesting to see what FXX deems worthy enough to be their opening shot in the war for scripted television audience.

Man Seeking Woman is set to premiere sometime next year on FXX.

Will you be watching Man Seeking Woman? Could this be the project that puts FXX on the map and helps the network establish an identity away from FX imports? What type of comedies would you like to see FXX pursue in the future?

When we last left Wilfred, Ryan followed the address on the envelope he found in his father’s office to an unknown location that had a Wilfred statue carved in the ground. The entire series of Wilfred has focused in on one question (who (or what) is Wilfred?) and there’s yet to be a definitive stance taken by the show, as Wilfred’s penchant for giving Ryan guff has been used to head fake the audience multiple times. Just when you think some type of answer has been discovered, it’s all revealed to be Wilfred doing his best to mess with Ryan’s already vulnerable disposition, something that has set back the latter’s journey toward answers about his childhood and the origin of Wilfred multiple times.

While the death of his father was a crushing blow for Ryan, especially since his opinion of the old man had lightened after doing some soul searching and undergoing therapy, it could end up being the catalyst for his final push for answers due to the existence of the letter. This is Ryan’s biggest lead yet and it’s something that Wilfred doesn’t know about yet, so if he’s able to keep the information to himself, he might have a chance at actually finding some resolution and the inner peace that comes from solving a problem that has been lingering for quite some time. But will he be prepared for whatever he finds out about Wilfred’s origins and his family’s connection to his four-legged friend?

The fourth and final season of Wilfred premieres Wednesday, June 25th at 10:00 on FXX.

Will you be watching Wilfred? How definitive of an answer regarding what Wilfred is do you think we’ll receive? Is Wilfred real or has Ryan been hallucinating his existence this entire time?

FX will be premiering two new dramas this coming summer in Tyrant and The Strain. The former, to bow Tuesday, June 24th at 10:00, comes from Howard Gordon (24) and Gideon Raff (Homeland) and tells the story of Bassam “Barry” Al Fayeed (Adam Rayner), the younger son of the dictator of a war-torn nation. He decides to end a self-imposed 20-year exile from his home country and returns, this time with his wife and children, only to find that the culture clash his family experiences threatens to swallow them whole. The latter, set to become FX’s first Sunday drama with a July 13th premiere, is based on the best-selling trilogy of the same name and follows Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. When his team gets called in to investigate a viral outbreak with the hallmarks of vampirism, nothing will ever be the same.

In addition to Rayner, Tyrant stars Jennifer Finnigan (Monday Mornings), Justin Kirk (Weeds), Jordana Spiro (My Boys), Moran Atias (The Next Three Days), and Ashraf Barhom (The Kingdom). The Strain, which was created by Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) and will be ran by Carlton Cuse (Lost), stars David Bradley (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban), Kevin Durand (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Mia Maestro (Frida), Regina King (Southland), and Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers).

Additionally, FX will be returning one drama this summer in the form of The Bridge, which underwent some upheaval behind the scenes with the departure of co-creator Meredith Stiehm. To debut Wednesday, July 9th at 10:00, the second season of The Bridge finds Marco reeling from the death of his son, Sonya encountering a mysterious man who threatens to come between her and Hank, and Daniel and Adriana continuing to follow the Millie Quintana Money House.

FX will also be debuting three comedies during the summer months, starting with Andrew Gurland’s Married on Thursday, July 17th at 10:00. Starring Nat Faxon (Ben & Kate) and Judy Greer (Archer), the series follows a married couple drowning in kids, debt, and suburbia, who are sometimes reminded of just how deep a connection they share. Following the premiere of Married is You’re the Worst, which debuts Thursday, July 17th at 10:30. From Stephen Falk (Weeds), the comedy tells the story of two self-destructive people (Aya Cash, Chris Geere) who fall in love despite themselves and attempt the impossible—a relationship. Finally, the network will be debuting its next 10/90 comedy, Partners, on Monday, August 4th at 9:00. Airing its first 10 episodes in 5 weeks, the series stars Martin Lawrence (Martin) and Kelsey Grammer (Frasier) as two Chicago lawyers from vastly different backgrounds who unexpectedly meet in court as they each face a personal crisis.

Meanwhile, at FXX, the final season of Wilfred is set to premiere Wednesday, June 25th at 10:00 with back-to-back episodes. The series, which barely managed to scrape a fourth season renewal after a third season collapse, will have 10 episodes in its final season and will serve as FXX’s lone summer scripted entry.

The series will now be the longest-running live-action cable comedy of all time and tied with My Three Sons for the second-longest-running live-action comedy of all time, with next season set to premiere in January 2015.

“We’ve had a wonderful partnership with Rob, Charlie and Glenn and over the past 10 years. They are fantastic and prolific producers, writers and actors, and it’s great to continue to support their talents for many years to come,” said FX Networks president of original programming Eric Schrier.

Though it’s as yet unclear what the network will pair The League with this coming fall, they’ve picked up a comedy from Tracy Morgan with the intention of pairing it with It’s Always Sunny next year. There’s been no information released about the series, created by Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton and It’s Always Sunny writer Luvh Rakhe, though it’s been confirmed as a different project than Morgan’s FX pilot Do or Die. As a result of the FXX pickup, that series is no longer in play.

The Morgan project will likely be the first FXX original series, assuming the network allows The League to air on its own in the fall. Thus far, FXX has been a refuge for wayward FX comedies, as It’s Always Sunny, The League, Wilfred, and Legit have all aired or will eventually air on the FX offshoot. What was to be FXX’s maiden voyage into original scripted content, animated comedy Chozen, wound up on FX, where it recently completed its first season.

What do you hope It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia does with their next two seasons? Will the Morgan project be the first FXX series to breakout? Can The League survive without its It’s Always Sunny lead-in?

The pair will be the next originals aired by the fledgling network, following in the footsteps of the most recent seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League, which put up numbers similar to what they were doing on FX in their respective FXX debuts. Animated comedy Chozen, which recently debuted on FX, was originally slated to be the first FXX series shown in 2014, as well as the first original FXX production, until a last minute decision by FX executives.

The second season of Legit finds Jim wondering about the state of his romantic life, namely why he hasn’t had a relationship last longer than six months and whether he’s a sex addict, as well as dealing with Steve’s descent into alcoholism following the loss of custody of his daughter, now living with his ex-wife. At the same time, Billy is adjusting to an earth-shattering loss, new muscular dystrophy medication, and an unusual romantic entanglement that will have to withstand the judgments of Jim and Steve. Star Wars’ Carrie Fisher will guest star during season two as a television executive.

Ali G: Rezurection will consist of repurposed episodes of Da Ali G Show, complete with original introductions from creator/star Sacha Baron Cohen and episodes that never made it to American shores for the show’s run on HBO. The satirical series features Cohen playing a series of characters, including an ignorant British b-boy, an anti-Semitic Kazakhstani television reporter, and an Austrian fashionista, who interview unsuspecting Americans, political pundits, and celebrities.

You can check out a clip of Da Ali G Show below.

Will you be watching Legit this season? Are you happy that Ali G will get even more exposure to American audiences? What type of original comedies would you like to see FXX go after in the future?

Season three showrunners Reed Agnew and Eli Jorne will be joined by former showrunner David Zuckerman for the final season, said to offer the type of closure and answers that would have been denied fans of the show had FX axed the show.

A renewal was looking less and less likely for Wilfred as its third season went on, with ratings down close to half from its season two numbers. The show was essentially by itself for the first time after former companion Louie took 2013 off and ran into several high profile events (NBA finals game 7, 4th of July, NFL preseason) that ate into its audience, never allowing it to find its footing this season. However, with the show’s positive critical notices and the introduction of FXX, this is a way for FX to keep both the creative and critical communities happy, as well as continue building FXX with known properties that skew rather young and send a message to fans that the network won’t yank the rug from under their feet.

Had FXX not been in existence yet, there might not have been a fourth season of Wilfred, but FX is in need of programming and can afford to give the series, based on the Australian comedy of the same name, a send-off. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League have already moved to the network, garnering impressive season premieres considering the channel’s availability, while the first FXX original to launch will be animated comedy Chozen. The network, which caters to the 18-34 demographic, is a part of FX’s plan to grow from 13 original series to 25 over the next couple of years.

The final season of Wilfred is set to premiere sometime in 2014.

How do you feel about Wilfred getting a definite end date? Do you want to find out what exactly Wilfred is or do you prefer the air of mystery around his existence? Will Ryan ever find happiness as long as he’s around Wilfred?

The comedies officially launched FXX on Wednesday night (September 4th), and retained most of their audience, despite the fact that the new channel is in 26 million fewer home than their former home, FX.

Though the shows have loyal followings, there was no guarantee that audiences would make the jump for the shows on a new night, let alone on a new network. Viewers had to do the work on their own to find FXX, which is replacing Fox Soccer on most major cable plans, and then, of course, remember that the shows now air on Wednesday rather than Thursdays.

According to Nielsen estimates, the season nine premiere of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia averaged 648,000 adults 18-49 – down from 809,000 with it’s premiere last October, though the show bested its viewership with men 18-34 (396,000 to 366,000 last year).

The League also showed promise, building from its Sunny lead-in, with 687,000 adults 18-49, down from 732,000 a year ago. The overall audience remained within 13% of last year’s viewership.

While FXX made one smart decision avoiding putting such male-skewing comedies opposite NFL programming on Thursdays, the scheduling shift now pits the comedies against first-run FX dramas The Bridge, now, and American Horror Story, next month. However, FX has said that one reason for differentiating the original network and the new comedy-centric FXX is to hopefully bring a younger skew to the latter – which was the case on Wednesday night’s opener, where comedies on FXX ranked best among men 18-34, and FX dramas performed best with men 25-54.

It will certainly be interesting to see how the numbers play out for FX/FXX dramas and comedies as the season continues. Hopefully with a bit more promotion, and the addition of FXX in homes, the network will more concretely prove itself.

In addition to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League, FXX original comedies Legit and Chozen (an animated series) will be joining the lineup.
