Although, you must know that by the look of this promo, Sam (Jared Padalecki) seems pretty bad or may be even dying. And, obviously his big brother Dean, played by the actor, Jensen Ackles is perturbed about this and makes up his mind to miss the closing of the Hell Gates, in order to save Dean’s life. The promo also covers the come-back of the fans’ most favored character, Bobby, played by Jim Weaver and gives a sneak peek of a fallen angel on the show, Ezekiel, portrayed by Tahmoh Penikett. As Jeremy Carver, the Executive Producer of Supernatural puts it that this guest character is “a dignified warrior angel injured in the Fall.”

Dean: I’ve had that hangover. Jager, man. Whew.

Castiel: The final test, do you know what it is?
Sam: I have to cure a demon.
Castiel: Of what?

Dean: Soups on! And, here we go. I think this is, uh…yeah. It’s still good.
Sam: A half drunk beer, some jerky and three peanut butter cups?

Dean: That’s not gonna cut it. Not this time. You can take your little apology and cram it up your ass.
Castiel: Dean, I thought I was doing the right thing.
Dean: Yeah, you always do.

San: So, we have a dungeon.
Dean: Finally.

Dean: Well, that was weird, with three exclamation points.
Sam: That wasn’t a normal exorcism. They changed the words.

Castiel: Sam is more damaged than I am.
Dean: Yeah, well, even all banged up, Sammy comes through.

Metatron: Put the virgin down Castiel. We need to talk.

Cas: You’re Metatron? The Metatron?
Metatron: In public it’s Marv.

Marv: Kevin Tran told me about you.
Cas: He did?
Marv: Yeah. According to him, you and I have a lot in common. We’re both free thinkers and we’re both on heaven’s most wanted list. I thought we could socialize, maybe grab a bite.

Marv: Look, the angels are like a big dysfunctional family. We need to lock them all in a room until they work things out. All the factions. You, me…
Cas: You mean like a big family meeting?
Marv: Exactly. Which is why we need to shut down heaven.

Waitress: Cool coat.
Cas: No, it’s actually quite warm.
Waitress: Cute and funny. Okay.
Marv: Should’ve picked a better looking vessel.

Crowley: First things first, what are you wearing?

Crowley: What the hell. I’m sexting you an address. Check it out, and we’ll talk.

Dean: What the hell are you doing Crowley?

Dean: Want me to do the whole airplane thing, with the spoon? When’s the last time you ate?

Sam: Well, I’m not good. And I’m not going to be good until we can start moving again, until I can start the third trial.
Dean: Trial? I wouldn’t let you start a moped.

Sam: This isn’t a cold or a fever or whatever it is you’re supposed to feed. This is part of it all. Those first two trials they’re not just things I did. They’re doing something to me. They’re changing me, Dean.

Kevin: I’m dead you bastards! So screw you, screw God and screw everybody in between!

Sam: How about the other prophets in line? I mean, if Kevin is dead, then won’t one of them be activated?
Dean: Nothing. Not a peep. Here we are. No lead, no tablet. Squat.

Naomi: Very well. You’re saying that he can’t be caught? Then we will simply have to make him stop.

Dean: They taught word of God at Stanford?

Dean: And you say that this Medatron is hiding out in the mountains with a bunch of Indians.
Sam: Yeah, yeah I do. You’re not really supposed to say Indians. We should go.

Castiel: We were supposed to be their shepherds, not their murders.

Castiel: How many times have you torn into my head and washed it clean?
Naomi: Frankly, too damn many.

Crowley: Of course, if I wasn’t running everything, I could have played Dean myself.

Sam: Do you remember when Dad took us to the bottom of the Grand Canyon on that pack mule ride…
Dean: The what
Sam: And your, uh, mule kept farting, just letting go, like gale force?
Dean: Dude, you were only four years old. I barely remember that.
Sam: You rode a farty donkey.

Crowley: Just wanted to take a moment away from the main action to chat with my old business partner. I assume you won’t die just yet. It takes a painful long time to bleed out from the gun.

Castiel: The tablets weren’t meant for the angels, and they weren’t meant for you.
Crowley: She’s got a lot on her plate, so you can’t fault her for missing it. So I thought to myself, self, if Cas got away from her by touching the tablet, why would he ever stop touching the tablet? Then I said to myself, self, he hasn’t stopped touching the tablet now, has he?
(Holy crap! Who saw that one coming??? Cas was hiding the tablet inside himself??)

Sam: And I remember thinking, I could never go on a quest like that, because I’m not clean.
(This harkens to the rumors floating around that the trials are purifying Sam of the demon blood, and then he went AND SAID IT. How freaking awesome.)

Sam: You really haven’t heard of us? What kind of angel are you? We’re the freakin Winchesters!

Crowley: You little prat. You having fun yet?
Kevin: Screw you.
Crowley: Am I seeing this? How’d you figure it out?
Kevin: It started when they forgot the secret knock. Really, it was the way they acted. I don’t think on their best day Sam and Dean would go into town and get me a barbecue dinner; not when there are leftover burritos in the fridge.
Crowley: So, my demons were too polite.
Kevin: Yeah.
Crowley: I’ll be a son of a whore.

Metatron: I’m not one of them. I’m not an arch angel. I’m really run of the mill. I worked in the secretarial pool before God chose me to take down the word. Anyway, he seemed very worried about his work, what would happen when he left, so he had me write down instructions. He was gone.

Metatron: But really, really, it was your storytelling. That is the true flower of free will. At least, as you’ve mastered it so far. When you create stories, you become Gods. Of tiny, intricate dimensions into themselves. So many worlds. I have read as much as it’s possible for an angel to read and I haven’t caught up.

Dean: You want a story? Try Kevin Tran’s story. He was just a kid. He was a good, straight A kid and then he got sucked into all of this, this angel crap and then he became a prophet of the word of God. Your prophet! Now you should have been lookin’ out for him, but no, instead you’re here holed up reading books.

Metatron: You really intend on closing the doors of hell?
Dean: Seems like the thing to do, don’t it?
Metatron: It’s your choice. That’s what this has all been about. The choices your kind make. But you’re gonna have to weigh that choice. What will it take to do this and what will the world be like after it’s done.

That’s something I never thought about. If the doors of hell are closed, are they closed to those that need to go in as well as those that can get out? What Metatron said to consider seemed awfully ominous. We now know the third trial is to cure a demon. Who will they cure? Is Sam demon enough to cure? Only two episodes left, and I’ll be here to quote our way through it!

Sam nixed that idea, taking the one way trip  himself and leaving Dean behind. Is this a trial?? Sam gets his first glimpse of purgatory. So cute he went in holding hands with Ajay the taxi driver.

Sam:  What do you mean this is purgatory? This isn’t what I paid for – I booked the hell tour!
Ajay: Woah, woah, Winchester, detach. This is hell adjacent. I’ve been down this highway many times before.

Seriously? Who knew purgatory was hell-adjacent? I thought it was neither heaven or hell. Learn something new on Supernatural every week, don’t we?

Kevin: I’m gonna be in my room. Let me know when there’s a good day.
Dean: That’s my pie.

Crowley: As you might recall, patience isn’t one of my virtues. Well, I don’t have any virtues, but if I did, I’m sure patience wouldn’t be one of them.

Crowley: You’re trying my non-patience.

I’m thinking Sam taking the detour to hell through Purgatory will give him a bit more compassion when it comes to dealing with Dean and all he went through during his time spent in the place. Wonder if I’m right.

Hellbound Girl: You came. I knew you would. I’ve been praying for it. Forever.

BOBBY!!!!! I can’t believe Sam actually found Bobby in hell!!

Bobby: Get the hell out of here you black eyed son of a bitch.
Sam: What? Bobby, it’s Sam!

Holy Naomi! She just showed herself to Dean! No good quotes coming from it, but that she’s showing herself means she’s got something big under her sleeve. Especially right after Kevin hid the tablet. Thank God Kevin hid that tablet and didn’t tell Dean.

Naomi: Oh, I know you’ve been doing business with Ajay. He did mention, didn’t he, that his way into hell is through purgatory? I knew you’d want to know. See? We can be of help to each other.

Sam: You knew, somehow, right?
Bobby: I took a chance? 5050.

Bobby: What the hell is this?
Sam: Don’t get all pissed off. Purgatory.
Bobby: Balls!

Awww…the trial ends with Bobby’s spirit entering heaven. I hate that. I really do.

Dean: If you want nothin to do with this, I completely understand.
Benny: When Dean Winchester asks for a favor, he’s not screwing around.
Dean: Benny, sending you back there is the last thing I ever wanted to do.
Benny: I know, I know.
Dean: By my little brother is stuck down there.
Benny: This be the little brother who wants to kill me right?
Dean: You got access.
Benny: By access you mean getting beheaded?
Dean: Yeah, you’re right. It’s too much. I haven’t exactly been there for you lately.
Benny: Oh come on Dean,you know I love a challenge.

Wow – talk about a special friendship and a teary eyed moment. I’ve always loved Benny and I spend too much time watching Ty Olsson walk off of my favorite programs with a heart of gold. Sam better damn well appreciate what the man he questioned did for him when this is over!

Yikes, Bobby was pretty shocked to learn Sam didn’t look for Dan while he was gone.

Bobby: A good buddy? Well you two really went off the rails when I was gone, didn’t ya?

Bobby: I already said goodbye to ya once, Sam, it didn’t seem to take. No reason to think I won’t see you again. But, if they give me a rocking chair up there, I’m raising hell.

It seemed like Sam came to a little understanding with Benny before Benny let Sam go on without him. Will it be the last we see of Benny? I hope not, but I’m guessing yes.

Sam: Dean, look, Benny, uh, he got us out. A bunch of vamps showed and he used himself as bait.I get the feeling that even if that didn’t happen, he didn’t want to come back, you know? I’m sorry.

Crowley: Bobby Singer. I’d recognize you anywhere.
Dean: Let him go Crowley. He doesn’t belong in hell.
Crowley: He does if I say he does!

Naomi: Let me see if I’ve interpreted the situation correctly. The Winchesters have freed an innocent from hell, from which you are wrongfully are trying to return him.
Crowley: Siding with them, Naomi? You don’t know those two, Naomi. Before they’re done, we’ll both be locked away.
Naomi: I’m just hoping they lock you away, dear. The rest, I’ll figure out.
Crowley: Bureaucrat! You’re fighting outside your weight class.
Naomi: Don’t call me a bureaucrat.

Naomi: I told you you could trust me.

Oh if ever more untrue words were spoken! By an angel no less!! The second trial is finished. What will this do to Sam now? How close will they let Naomi before they realize she’s not the good angel she’s portraying herself to be and that she’s who Castiel was running from?  Kevin is with Crowley. Victor: These kids are the cream of the crop. They are The Beatles. They are the dream team. And once they get their revenge, they’ll be better hunters than any of us ever dreamed of.

Dean: Why don’t you stay here and look after The Brady Bunch.

Dean: Yeah, I never trust a guy who wears a sweater.

Krissy: Why are you with the vampire that killed my dad?
Dean: You’re barkin’ up the wrong tree. She didn’t kill your pops.

Aidan: So you killed our families?
Victor: I know the deaths are tragic, but think of the future lives that will now be saved because you are together.

Dean: So what you’re saying is you like that boy over there and you want to stay.

Krissy: You’re alright for an old guy.
Dean: I’m really not that old.
Krissy: You keep telling yourself that.

Dean: Listen, there’s something I want to tell you about Krissy.
Aidan: Yeah, you’ll kill me if I ever hurt her, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Dean: No. She’ll kill you.

Dean: Maybe if we shut that hellhole once and for all those three can have a real life.
Sam: Maybe they won’t be the only ones.

I know I didn’t promise any extracurricular activity at the end of the post, but this Supernatural was outstanding, wasn’t it? It was such a great look at how the life of hunting and doing so at such a young age turned Sam and Dean into the men they are today. They’re worried about what might happen to Krissy, Josephine and Aidan going forward, but with the network of good hunters looking in on them, much as they did Sam and Dean as their own father was gone, I think they’ll turn out just fine. Listening to the advice from the lips of the brothers during the episode showed how much they have grown and how incredible it would be see the, some day, with families of their own. That inevitable series finale can shoot us through the remaining years of their lives and what becomes of them and I won’t be unhappy!

Instead of getting put into the traditional system, a man named Victor (guest star Adrian Hough) takes in the orphans, gives them a home and continues their education in hunting. Not a traditional life, to be sure, but he reasons, in the clip below, that as good as the hunters are now as demons get more aggressive it can’t hurt to start the training earlier, and make it a more well-rounded approach.

According to the preview information, Sam will think the idea isn’t all that bad, but Dean will become very suspicious of Victor. After all, he and Krissy developed quite a friendship when they last met, and he had high hopes for her future. They even did a fist bump for goodness sakes!

Personally, I don’t think Victor gives Sam and Dean nearly enough credit for their intelligence and skill and calling our dearly departed Bobby a borderline alcoholic is pushing the envelope, but credit where it’s due – I did giggle when he said “and somebody obviously dropped Garth on his head when he was a baby…”

What are your thoughts? Given the world they live in should the citizens on Supernatural start up a line of a Hogwarts type of Hunting Schools to get kids prepared to take on demons and monsters with as little fanfare and mess as possible? Now that I think of it, it could make for a fun spinoff series should Supernatural ever (curse my name right now!) want to hang up it’s hat.

Castiel: I don’t know. I’m hoping the strange haired demon in the kitchen is more helpful than the others I interrogated.

Dean: He puts the ass in Cas, huh?
Sam: He’s definitely off.
Dean: Off? He hasn’t been right since he got back from purgatory and we still don’t know how he got out of there.

Castiel: You know, I can hear you both. I am a celestial being.

Meg: Aren’t you a little short for a storm trooper?

Dean: So, um, I gotta ask. What’s up with the hair? What?
Meg: Thanks for noticing Dean, but this wasn’t my idea, it was Crowley’s and it’s just another reason I want to stab him in the face.

Meg: Any of you dummies got a map?
Sam: What’s there now?
Meg: Do I look like Google to you?

Castiel: These wounds have festered.
Meg: You really do know how to make a girl’s nethers quiver, don’t you?
Castiel: I am aware of how to do that. Although, it doesn’t usually involve cleaning wounds.

Meg: Really, you remember everything?
Cas: If you’re referring to the pizza man, then yes, I remember everything. And it’s a good memory.

Meg: I’m kinda good, which sucks. You’re kinda bad…which is actually all manner of hot.

Crowley: What’s that old expression? If you want something done right…. blah, blah, blah, blah.

Sam: I’m fine.
Cas: Sam, no you’re not. You’re damaged in ways even I can’t heal.

Dean: Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Castiel: I can reason with Dean. He’s a good man.
Naomi: Kill him.

Castiel: There has to be another way.
Naomi: You have done this a thousand times, Castiel. You’re ready. Kill him and take the tablet and bring it home where it belongs.

Meg: Wait. Hold on. There’s one thing I don’t understand. You hit a dog and stopped. Why?
Sam: That whole story and that’s your takeaway?

Naomi: What have I done to you? Do you have any idea what it’s like out there? There is blood everywhere. And it’s on your hands, after everything you did, to us, to Heaven. I fixed you, Castiel. I FIXED YOU.

Dean: Cas, Cas, I know you’re in there. I know you can hear me. It’s me. We’re family. I need you. I need you.

Crowley: Castiel? So that’s who’s been poking my boys, and not in a sexy way.

Crowley: I have a bone to pick with you, Moose, over what you did to my poor dog.
Meg: Are you going to talk us to death or get down to it already?
Crowley: There’s my whore. I’m not here for my dearly departed though. I’m here for the stone with the funny scribbles on it.
Sam: That’s not going to happen.
Crowley: I love it when you get all tough. It touches me right where my bathing suit goes.

Crowley: If you remember our time in Mesopotamia like I do, then you remember I’m a lover, not a fighter.
Naomi: What do you want you cockroach?

Sam: So what happened? Cas touched the tablet and it reset him to his factory settings or something?

Dean: Listen, Sam, I may not be able to carry the burden that comes along with these trials, but I can carry you.
Sam: You realize that you kind of just quoted “Lord of the Rings,” right?
Dean: But come on, it’s the Rudy Hobbit, and the Rudy Hobbit always gets a pass. Shut up.

Castiel still isn’t playing it straight with Sam and Dean, at first lying to them about what the demons are after these days – Lucifer’s crypts. That could do a number on Sam’s head if he were still in the wrong frame of mind. Nonetheless, interrogating demons never goes as expected and that’s how they discover what Meg has been up to.

In this “cryptic” clip, Cas is playing bad angel hunter again, Meg gets rescued and Crowley is doing what he does best – providing plenty of snark, demon style.

The bigger picture becomes much clearer after viewing this next clip, where Cas is lying to the Winchester Brothers, at the command of Naomi, to keep them from knowing what they need to adequately prepare to search for Lucifer’s crypts. I’m still eager for the day we learn who in the hell (and she must might be from Hell) Naomi really is. Until then, Cas is her puppet.

If the entire episode is as full of good quotes as can be found in the two clips shown here, my promise is a dedicated “Goodbye Stranger” quote post because, well, it’s deserving.

I completely get why Sam is regretting the loss of Amelia. Even though they didn’t spend a lot of time together, their connection was very deep. In a way, he blames Dean’s return for his split with Amelia. Even if Amelia’s man had come home, if Dean hadn’t Sam might have stayed around and fought for the woman he loved. Instead he picked back up with the life he hated when the series started.

Sam was still pissed Dean pulled the “Amelia’s in trouble” trick to get him to figure things out, and on top of that there’s the Benny intrusion into their lives. Dean trusts Benny and wants Sam to trust his faith in Benny. Sam laid it out for Dean pretty simply – Benny or me.

Considering everything Sam went through in the past with his demon blood – being a demon, sucking on demons, loving demons, killing  and enjoying it – you’d think he’d have a bit more understanding of where Dean was coming from having come out of purgatory. Sometimes you just need to have someone there to who’s a part of it, but isn’t so intimately involved, to just listen and support you. Once Benny called Dean while he was clearly eyeing some youngsters for their warm blood, I realized Sam and Benny are like each other’s sponsors in Purgatory Anonymous. They went through something so heavy and intimate together and they created their own deep bond. Much like the one Sam was creating with Amelia.

Thankfully, no matter how far apart the brothers are, with each passing season they become sexier and better looking. Focus on the positive!

Castiel found a way to bring Sam and Dean together when he tried to safe Samandriel (Alphie). Sam left Amelia with the notion that if they both showed up at their motel room the next day, they would be together forever. But if either of them didn’t, then they could never go back. Dean told Benny he would be there to help him as soon their case was over. Then everything went wrong.

I’ve known there was something wrong with Naomi since we met her. Since Castiel has been back, he hasn’t seen Heaven, only the office of Naomi, which I assume is all she wants him to see. I still don’t know whether or not she is even in Heaven. When she told Cas to go and save Samandriel, I thought, okay, she’s a good guy. Then he was compromised by Crowley’s horrific torture methods and it was discovered Hell isn’t the only place with a sacred tablet. As Samandriel was telling the secret to Crowley, Castiel was reliving some sort of torture Naomi did to him and he was flying back and forth between earth and her office.

Once Samandriel was freed, Naomi demanded Castiel kill him. She was like an abusive partner, talking Castiel out of what Samandriel tried to tell him about Naomi, that something wasn’t right, that she was using the angels for something. When Cas was talking to Samandriel, he didn’t even know who Naomi was. The whole thing is just very freaky and Naomi cannot possibly be a benevolent angel trying to save Heaven the wrath of Crowley and his minions by offing other angels with mind-controls brothers.

The only good thing that came of the horrid situation was Sam and Dean found a reason to stick together. When Cas is in trouble, they can’t go their separate ways and leave it up to fate. Putting everything else aside, Sam and Dean decided they would continue on with their work and save happiness for another day. Dean said goodbye to Benny (and we lost Ty Olsson!) and Sam didn’t show up to the motel, leaving Amelia heartbroken once again.

There was a resignation as the Winchester brothers sat down on the couch, popped open a couple of beers and watched TV. They may never get their happy ending, but they’ll continue to fight so that others do. While the world will continue to be in love with Sam and Dean and Supernatural, we will also hope they fall in love with each other again, as brothers and friends. As they try to save the world, it would be nice if they could at least have each other to lean upon.

You could tell someone let Martin out prematurely the way he was darting around the room like he was on crack. I wanted to smack him, or tie him to a chair. He was being completely irrational and disrespectful to boot. However he was when John Winchester worked with him, surely there was little of that man left dealing with Sam and Dean.

Still, Dean was being courteous and reasonable. Not knowing what Benny had been up to, and realizing he was what he was and vampires do what the do, he went along for the ride. The last thing he needed on his conscience was someone he released from purgatory taking innocent lives. That will never be what Dean stands for and he’s smart enough to ensure work it through. Giving Benny the benefit of the doubt and calling him was also very like Dean, after all, Benny had never let him down and he wasn’t about to be the first to do it in their friendship.

It was a nice touch, showing just how much Benny had changed, that he had settled in the Bayou working alongside his great granddaughter, albeit without telling her who he was. How could he pull that off without telling her he was a vampire? He loved her enough to just be by her side, get to know her and save her the drama of what became of his life. I thought it was rather admirable.

Once Benny was cleared of wrong doing, he and Dean said their goodbyes. Unfortunately, with someone ruthless trying to hurt him and those around him, he couldn’t take the chance of staying with his own blood and it was time to move on. Honestly, I was feeling pretty sad that we were saying goodbye to Benny and Ty Olsson, so the ironic twist that Martin was the one with a true lust for blood appeased me for a bit. More on that in a moment.

Once Dean thought he had cleaned up the Benny situation, he wanted to see something else tidied up – whatever the hell was going on between Sam and Amelia. We learned through more blurry flashbacks that Sam chose to leave her, to give her a shot with Don. I think her heart was pretty solidly in the Sam camp, but leaving left the door wide open for change. Dean had rigged a phone to make it seem Amelia needed Sam in a hurry, and of course he went. What he found was the two of them on the couch, drinking some beer and watching television; living the life that should have been his. The life that would have been his if he had only he had stayed and fought for it.

He left, but she found him. Just after he angrily rang Dean. Then he learned Benny killed Martin he was out for blood. He didn’t even bother to listen to why taking his life was necessary, because his vengeance wasn’t about Benny, it was about the loss of his own life. But he turned around, ready to leave, guns blazing, if you will, to see Amelia.

Of course, I missed the previews, so I have no idea what’s up next. I highly doubt Sam will push past Amelia in a rush to avenge Martin. Even he had to have figured out what a loose cannon he let into the wild with that one. He’ll have to face Amelia and in some respect The Brothers Winchester will still be at odds. Unless Amelia can break through Sam’s damaged heart. It is nearing Christmas, after all, and there’s some story somewhere about a grinch and his heart growing in size…

For me, I’m happy Benny made it out alive and didn’t go underground just yet. I like the idea we’ve finally found a supernatural being the Winchesters can trust. It brings a new aspect to a show in its eighth season, proving again Supernatural doesn’t have to fight very hard for relevancy, because it just comes naturally.
