In 1884, a young Nucky deals with the death of his sister, Susan (Onata Aprile), while his father (Ian Hart) has a standoff with the Commodore.

“We’re thrilled to get the go-ahead for a fifth season of Boardwalk Empire,” said series creator Terence Winter. “After much discussion with my creative team and HBO, we’ve decided to wrap up the series after such a great run and look forward to bringing it to a powerful and exciting conclusion.”

Although there had been talk of a six-season plan for the series, the most important thing about a show ending, especially one that has a firmly established viewing audience and place on its network like Boardwalk does, is that it goes out on its own terms. As much as fans of the show would like to be immersed in the world of Atlantic City kingpin Nucky Thompson, former federal agent Nelson Van Alden, and increasingly ambitious Chicago mobster Al Capone for season upon season, year upon year, if the creative team behind the show feels as if they’ve reached the end of the line, it’s better to end the show than to run on fumes due to the show’s critical and commercial success.

Last season, Boardwalk Empire averaged 7.5 million cumulative viewers per week, keeping it as one of the network’s most-watched original programs. The series earned five Emmy awards this past September, the most of any series on television, including an award for Bobby Cannavale’s performance as Gyp Rosetti, season three’s primary villain. Additionally, season four received strong critical notices for the increased emphasis on Michael Kenneth Williams’ Chalky White and the addition of acclaimed Jeffrey Wright as Dr. Valentin Narcisse, a character based on New York mobster Casper Holstein.

Though it’s become less of a live hit this season than in years past, thus taking it out of the pop culture conversation for the most part, Boardwalk Empire is having yet another very strong season thus far and, judging by its past three seasons, will only get stronger once the story threads finally connect. Season four has found Nucky still reeling from his clashes with Gyp and searching for allies that he can trust, while Richard spent time in Wisconsin taking care of some unfinished business, Van Alden became even more involved in the dispute over Chicago with O’Banion and the newly transplanted Capone brothers, and Dr. Valentin Narcisse has gotten into the heroin game, throwing his hat into the ring to become the next King of Atlantic City. Can Nucky hang on to the throne he fought so hard to retain last season?

Boardwalk Empire airs Sundays at 9:00 on HBO. The show will be joined this Sunday by the final season premiere of Danny McBride’s Eastbound & Down and the series premiere of Stephen Merchant comedy Hello Ladies.

Season four of Boardwalk Empire looks to split the action between Atlantic City, where Nucky has assumed his role of kingpin once again following the fall of Gyp Rosetti and the retreat of Joe Masseria; Harlem, home to Dr. Valentin Narcisse, who could challenge Mr. Thompson’s recently reacquired authority in the city; Chicago, as Van Alden is torn between the newly arrived Capone brothers and Dean O’Banion in terms of who he’ll pledge his allegiance to; and New York City, home to Lansky, Luciano, and Rothstein, the latter arguably the most dangerous man in Nucky’s orbit.

While Thompson’s triumph over Rosetti could have sent the message that he’s a much tougher gangster than what people give him credit for, subsequently scaring off anyone trying to come for his title, it seems as if it only made people hungrier to take him out, to prove that they’re even tougher for bringing down the revitalized kingpin. There’s also the matter that he’s still in charge of several extremely lucrative businesses that would be up for grabs should he ever lose his life, so combine that with the overall value of Atlantic City in terms of water access and relative lack of competition and Nucky will still have to be on the balls of his feet in order to keep up with those who wish to see him fall.

Agent Knox fills Hoover in on the Thompson operation, vowing to exploit Nucky’s weakest link. Chalky is intrigued by Daughter Maitland’s presence. Dunn Purnsley goes to Harlem, and is courted by Valentin Narcisse. Willie and his college roommate, Clayton (Owen Campbell), carry a practical joke too far.

Best known for her role as Allison Dubois on Medium with her ability to talk to the dead and raise a family of similarly suited daughters while maintaining a realistic and loving marriage for the duration of the series, Patricia comes from a family of talented actors. Two of her siblings, brother David Arquette and sister Rosanna Arquette are successful actors and producers in their own right and both made guest appearances on Medium.

Boardwalk Empire marks Ms. Arquette’s first major appearance in a television series since Medium ended in 2011.

Boardwalk Empire follows the story of  Enoch “Nucky” Thompson (based on the historical Enoch L. Johnson) a political figure who rose to prominence and controlled Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition period of the 1920s and 1930s. It seems to me that having another contact the likes of Ms. Wheet will be beneficial to Nucky, as he’ll need all the help he can get going into Season 4. At the end of Season 3, we saw the gang holed up in Atlantic City during a major gang war on that was relying on the strength of Nucky’s negotiation strength by telephone.

Since so many cast members are being added, we know at lest Nucky gets out alive, but how the Feds and everyone else will fare after the outburst will be fun to watch as we delve into Season 4. I’m still wondering what kind of ulterior motives a Prohibition agent could have. Can’t wait to find out!

Boardwalk Empire has also added two recurring players to its ever-crowded universe of crooks, thugs, and collateral damage. Domenick Lombardozzi will be playing Ralph Capone, Al Capone’s older brother, while Brian Geraghty is set to portray Loren Knox, a prohibition agent with ulterior motives newly assigned to Atlantic City. We don’t know yet how Ralph will be in comparison to Al, though with little brother’s tentative alliance with Nucky, he could quickly become a key figure on the boardwalk. If, of course, Nucky can continue to outsmart (or find the right price for) the feds, including Knox. But something tells me that the agent has more on his mind than making a quick buck.

Ron Livingston might be best known to TV audiences as Jack Berger, one of Carrie Bradshaw’s boyfriends on Sex and the City, but he’s appeared on the likes of Defying Gravity, The Practice, and Band of Brothers. Lombardozzi and Geraghty are also HBO alumni, with the former having portrayed Herc on The Wire and the latter completing a three-episode arc on True Blood last season.

The fourth season of Boardwalk Empire premieres this fall on HBO. Production is already underway.

However, last week, Nucky gained more strength than he’s had in quite a while, with Eli coming through on getting Capone involved in the conflict. Combine the Chicago crime lord with a motivated Chalky White, who will get his club after all if Nucky retains control of the city, and an ever-scheming Rothstein and Rosetti’s victory isn’t completely assured. Nucky might not have as much of a stranglehold on the conflict as he had earlier in the season, but he has the alliance needed to vanquish Gyp from Atlantic City, especially if he can figure out who was responsible for leaking the impending attack on Masseria that led to Owen getting killed.

Elsewhere on Boardwalk Empire, Harrow returns to the brothel after being thrown out by Gillian, Luciano is strong-armed into taking on another partner following his arrest, Chalky and Capone put aside their differences to take on Masseria’s men together, and Margaret makes a decision that could change her life permanently.

The third season finale of Boardwalk Empire airs tonight at 9:00 on HBO. The show was renewed for a fourth season this past October and will be returning in the fall of 2013.
