From Mike O’Malley (Shameless), Survivor’s Remorse follows basketball phenom Cam Calloway as he realizes his dream of playing in the pros. However, the excitement that Cam feels about living the life he always wanted and being able to help the community that always supported him is tempered by the greedy family members and calculating groupies that he suddenly finds himself surrounded by. Along with his cousin Reggie, Cam must navigate a world he thought he knew and realize that the life of a professional basketball player is a lot different than he expected.

Executive produced by four-time NBA MVP LeBron James, Survivor’s Remorse stars Jessie T. Usher (When the Game Stands Tall), RonReaco Lee (Sister, Sister), Erica Ash (Scary Movie 5), Tichina Arnold (Everybody Hates Chris), and Mike Epps (Being Mary Jane).

Survivor’s Remorse is set to premiere Saturday, October 4th at 9:00 on Starz. In addition to being available on Youtube (below), the first two episodes of the basketball comedy are on select cable, satellite and telco affiliates in the U.S., as well as the Survivor’s Remorse Faceboo/Twitter/official site, the Starz Play app, and Starz.com.

The project, which will allow the directors complete creative leeway (rewrites, casting, hiring of crew members), will be the first original unscripted series for Starz.

The network also revealed that comedy Survivor’s Remorse, their first attempt at original scripted comedy since Gravity in 2010, will premiere Saturday, October 4th at 9:00. The six-episode series tells the story of Cam Calloway, a talented basketball player who makes it to the pros. However, instead of being able to bask in the glow of a dream fulfilled, Calloway is forced to deal with the negatives that go along with being a professional athlete, including opportunistic friends. Executive produced by the likes of LeBron James, Maverick Carter, and showrunner Mike O’Malley, Survivor’s Remorse stars Jessie T. Usher (Level Up), Ronreaco Lee (Let’s Stay Together), Erica Ash (MADtv), Tichina Arnold (Martin), and Mike Epps (Being Mary Jane).

Finally, Starz released the first trailer for upcoming drama The Missing, which doesn’t have a concrete premiere date as of yet. A co-production between Starz and BBC, The Missing stars James Nesbitt (The Hobbit) as Tony, a man devastated by the abduction of his young son. He soon becomes obsessed with the boy’s disappearance, with his marriage suffering and his life threatening to cave in on itself. Written by Harry and Jack Williams (Honest) and directed by Tom Shankland (Ripper Street), The Missing stars Frances O’Connor (Mr. Selfridge), Jason Flemyng (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Arsher Ali (Four Lions), Tcheky Karyo (The Patriot), and Ken Stott (Rebus).

“Mike has infused the world of Survivor’s Remorse with humor and heart,” said Chris Albrecht, Starz CEO.  “Along with LeBron, Maverick, Tom and Paul, we feel we really have an all-star team to capture the complexity and comedy inherent to this series.”

For the past several years, Starz has stayed mostly in the world of original scripted dramas, with the likes of Black Sails, Spartacus, and Magic City having been developed and aired. The last original comedies that aired on the network were Party Down and Gravity, both of whom were cancelled in June 2010. Aside from Survivor’s Remorse, Starz has several new series on tap for the remainder of 2014, including the television adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novel series and 50 Cent-produced crime drama Power.

Titled Survivor’s Remorse, the show will be set in North Philadelphia and explore the lives of two men from the inner-city streets who have attained fame – one an NBA star, the other, not – and how they deal with friends and families.

King James will not star in the sitcom, though he will be one of the executive producers.  He is developing the show alongside his longtime friend and business partner Maverick Carter, Tom Werner, producer behind The Cosby Show and Roseanne, Paul Wachter, and actor Mike O’Malley, who will executive produce as well as write.

In an interview with CBS, Carter made it a point that the show is not autobiographical about James, that it’s fiction, and added with a laugh that LeBron is “too famous” for the show to be about him.  Likely a reason why the show will not be set in James’ home town of Akron, Ohio.

LeBron himself described the show as “making it out of a place where you’re not supposed to…being one of the few to make it out and everyone looking at you to be the savior.”

Werner likened Survivor’s Remorse to shows like Roseanne that dealt with tough situations yet used humor as well – “It’s light-hearted, but it’s real-life stories.”

Werner, James and Carter have worked together since 2011 as part of Fenway Sports Group, an organization that combines sports, media and entertainment.  Werner expressed his delight to bring the show to Starz, though the show is just in development and has no set timetable.

James also added that though it’s been years since his career launched, survivor’s remorse still weighs on him.

“I live with that, knowing that I have to hold a huge burden and responsibility that a lot of people cannot even think about.”
