“Marvel’s brand of entertainment is a thrill ride for audiences, and we’re excited to be adding their next five blockbusters to TNT’s arsenal of high-quality genre fare,” said Deborah K. Bradley, senior vice president, head of program acquisitions, content strategy and licensing for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. “These movies will play a key role in TNT’s long-term success, especially among key adult demos.”

The move comes as TNT looks to rebrand itself into a home for male-skewing dramas. With the addition of Legends and The Last Ship, as well as the Titans adaptation that was recently put into production, the network is actively steering itself away from the type of older procedural that it’s known for. The network is still entrenched in the world of crime drama, but they’ve started trying to tweak the format (e.g. Murder In the First, which followed one case over the course of its first season) and better differentiate their dramas from one another.

Marvel has been embracing television much more readily in the past couple of years, as it has Agents of Shield already on the air, Agent Carter set to premiere come midseason, and five Netflix dramas that will be debuting over the course of the next few years. Along with DC, which has Gotham, The Flash, and Constantine premiering this fall, the company has helped bring the spectacle of comic movies to television and it looks as if there’s still quite the demand for a good hero, regardless of how many comic dramas there are already on television.

Goddard has left the job with fellow Buffy the Vampire Slayer scribe Steven S. DeKnight.

In addition to serving as showrunner and executive producer, Goddard was supposed to write and direct the series’ first episode, which is set to premiere on the streaming site next year.  Goddard will now serve as a consultant for a series, but most of his focus will be set on writing and directing Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man villain-focused spinoff, Sinister Six.

DeKnight has previously served as shorunner of Starz’s Spartacus, and has worked with Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.  He is also credited as a co-executive producer and writer on The CW’s Smallville.

Aside from the Daredevil series, the deal between Netflix and Marvel also includes adaptations of three other comic book series: Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage.

Disney and Netflix announced today that they have joined forces to develop a live-action “four series epic,” featuring the afrorementioned heros, plus a “miniseries event.”  Each hero will star in their own thirteen-episode series on the streaming platform, and their storylines will converge in the miniseries finale, currently titled The Defenders, said to “reimagine a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.”

A similar technique used in The Avengers which draws storylines from five previous films and several Marvel heroes’ stories.

The epic will begin in 2015 with the first serial, spotlighting Daredevil, blind New York City crusader last seen onscreen in a less-than-thrilling 2003 film, played by Ben Affleck.  Daredevil will be followed by series about Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage.

The announcement is the latest news after Netflix inked a deal with Disney for subscription TV rights to all live-action and animated films beginning in 2016.  Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. can currently be seen on ABC on Tuesdays at 8PM.
