The series, from Criminal Minds‘ Chris Mundy, starred Mark Strong and Lennie James as Detroit detectives Frank Agnew and Joe Geddes dealing with the loss of one of their own – at the hands of Joe.

It’s not exactly a surprise that Low Winter Sun was dealt a cancellation blow, as the drama bled quite a bit of audience from the final season of Breaking Bad and was decisively ignored by the critic community that helped buoy the latter until audiences caught on. Whatever tiny shred of possibility that the show would receive a surprise renewal, if only as schedule filler, was dismissed when the network not only renewed western drama Hell on Wheels, it gave the Anson Mount vehicle three extra episodes for its next season.

It’s a time of great upheaval at AMC. While Hell was renewed for a fourth season and The Walking Dead continued to break ratings records in its own fourth season, Breaking Bad concluded its acclaimed run this past September and The Killing was cancelled for a second time, only to be resurrected for a final season on Netflix. With Mad Men on its last legs, heading for the start of its final season this coming spring, AMC has ordered two new dramas to series – Halt & Catch Fire, a period drama that centers on the technology industry and stars Lee Pace; and Turn, based on Alexander Rose’s novel Washington’s Spies. Both are set to make their debuts sometime in 2014.

Do you think that AMC made the right decision in cancelling Low Winter Sun? Was the show’s series finale conclusive enough for you or would you have liked at least one additional season? Will you be watching either of AMC’s upcoming new dramas?

However, while Frank has done his best to become the type of officer that people think of as “one of the good ones,” always toeing the line and being as fair and personable as he can, Joe is wilder, more of a cop who does things his own way without any regard for what the book says. He also has a powerful way with words and the ability to talk people into doing things that they otherwise wouldn’t have considered. Case in point: his case to Frank about how they should kill one of their colleagues.

Based on the British miniseries of the same name, Low Winter Sun finds the two detectives taking a corrupt co-worker, who Joe knows murdered someone, and drowning him in the back of a restaurant. It should be the perfect crime – they know their department’s strengths and weaknesses, in addition to how they investigate crimes of this nature and what the best way to cover their tracks would be. It might even be the perfect crime if Frank can keep the guilt of what happened under wraps, especially since he had to be inebriated and receive a last second reminder of why his colleague deserved to die in the eyes of Joe. Frank has built a career on being the prototypical “good cop”, so will he be able to stop himself from incriminating himself and Joe for what they did? Is there a chance that the two get away with this after all?

In addition to Strong and James, Low Winter Sun stars Ruben Santiago-Hudson (American Gangster), Athena Karkanis (Saw IV), David Costabile (Lincoln), James Ransone (Inside Man), Erika Alexander (Living Single), and Sprague Grayden (Paranormal Activity 2).

The series premiere of Low Winter Sun is set to air Sunday, August 11th at 10:00 on AMC. You can check out a trailer for the series here, as well as a behind the scenes featurette here.

Will you be watching Low Winter Sun? Based strictly on the sneak peek, do Frank and Joe have reason enough to kill their colleague? How long will it be before the guilt of what he did starts to hit Frank?

He’s the cop that, after you’re done dealing with him, makes you think he’s not so bad after all, someone who makes his department look better with his very presence. But things change very quickly for the man when a colleague and fellow detective Joe (Lennie James) convinces him to do the unthinkable on AMC’s Low Winter Sun, based on the 2006 British miniseries of the same name.

Once the most standup guy in the pool of Detroit homicide detectives, Frank has now killed one of his own and his entire life beyond this point will be different. His priorities at work will no longer be acquiring justice and being an effective servant of the public; the focus has turned to keeping himself and his colleague from being on the wrong side of the law and making sure that they both keep the freedom that they currently enjoy. But how long can Frank feasibly keep up this front, especially if he and Joe begin turning on one another? Joe has the complete opposite reputation from Frank – plays by his own rule, surly, self-interested – and that’s fine for when they only have to work together briefly, but when they’re forever intertwined like this, something is bound to implode.

In addition to James and Strong, Low Winter Sun stars Ruben Santiago-Hudson (American Gangster) as ambitious Lt. George Torrance, Athena Karkanis (Saw IV) as Frank’s partner Dani Khalil, and David Costabile (Lincoln) as Internal Affairs agent David Westwood. The cast also includes James Ransone (Inside Man), Erika Alexander (Living Single), and Sprague Grayden (Paranormal Activity 2).

The series premiere of Low Winter Sun airs Sunday, August 11th at 10:00 on AMC. You can check out a trailer for the show here.

Will you be watching Low Winter Sun? If you’ve seen the original series, how do you think the adaptation will pan out? Do you think that this show will be a good match for the final eight episodes of Breaking Bad?

Everyone from low level criminals to the most lauded of criminologists have been trying to figure out what constitutes the perfect crime for years, if such a thing even exists. Even plans that seem to be quite foolproof are capable of having holes poked in them, but with technology continuing to advance and crime blanketing the evening news, those who commit (or aspiring to commit) actions against their fellow man are getting smarter. On AMC’s upcoming crime drama Low Winter Sun, someone thinks they’ve planned out the perfect crime, but did they really cover their bases that well?

Starring Lennie James (The Walking Dead) and Mark Strong (Zero Dark Thirty), Low Winter Sun features a Detroit detective murdering a fellow cop, thinking that his rank and shield of fellow detectives will protect him from ever being convicted, should he even be arrested or tried for the crime. However, his actions will set off a chain of events that will forever change the direction of both the Detroit PD and his life, pulling him into the heart of the Detroit underworld and making him face the darkness that lies within. He might have thought he would get away with doing away with his colleague and not have to face any complications or consequences as a result, but even the most decorated of detectives learn that even they can’t fool the criminal justice system.

In addition to James and Strong, Low Winter Sun stars Athena Karkanis (Saw IV), Erika Alexander (Living Single), David Costabile (Lincoln), James Ransone (Inside Man), Ruben Santiago-Hudson (American Gangster), and Sprauge Grayden (Paranormal Activity 2).

Low Winter Sun premieres this summer on AMC. The show, described as “a contemporary story of murder, deception, revenge and corruption,” is based on an award-winning 2006 BBC mini-series of the same name.

Will you be watching Low Winter Sun? Did the trailer make you more excited for the show to premiere? What are you expecting from the first season?
