When we last left Wilfred, Ryan followed the address on the envelope he found in his father’s office to an unknown location that had a Wilfred statue carved in the ground. The entire series of Wilfred has focused in on one question (who (or what) is Wilfred?) and there’s yet to be a definitive stance taken by the show, as Wilfred’s penchant for giving Ryan guff has been used to head fake the audience multiple times. Just when you think some type of answer has been discovered, it’s all revealed to be Wilfred doing his best to mess with Ryan’s already vulnerable disposition, something that has set back the latter’s journey toward answers about his childhood and the origin of Wilfred multiple times.

While the death of his father was a crushing blow for Ryan, especially since his opinion of the old man had lightened after doing some soul searching and undergoing therapy, it could end up being the catalyst for his final push for answers due to the existence of the letter. This is Ryan’s biggest lead yet and it’s something that Wilfred doesn’t know about yet, so if he’s able to keep the information to himself, he might have a chance at actually finding some resolution and the inner peace that comes from solving a problem that has been lingering for quite some time. But will he be prepared for whatever he finds out about Wilfred’s origins and his family’s connection to his four-legged friend?

The fourth and final season of Wilfred premieres Wednesday, June 25th at 10:00 on FXX.

A renewal was looking less and less likely for Wilfred as its third season went on, with ratings down close to half from its season two numbers. The show was essentially by itself for the first time after former companion Louie took 2013 off and ran into several high profile events (NBA finals game 7, 4th of July, NFL preseason) that ate into its audience, never allowing it to find its footing this season. However, with the show’s positive critical notices and the introduction of FXX, this is a way for FX to keep both the creative and critical communities happy, as well as continue building FXX with known properties that skew rather young and send a message to fans that the network won’t yank the rug from under their feet.

Had FXX not been in existence yet, there might not have been a fourth season of Wilfred, but FX is in need of programming and can afford to give the series, based on the Australian comedy of the same name, a send-off. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The League have already moved to the network, garnering impressive season premieres considering the channel’s availability, while the first FXX original to launch will be animated comedy Chozen. The network, which caters to the 18-34 demographic, is a part of FX’s plan to grow from 13 original series to 25 over the next couple of years.

The final season of Wilfred is set to premiere sometime in 2014.

With the slightly altered way of airing this season of Wilfred, it looks as if the show will eventually be paired with a new 10-episode comedy that debuts following the hiatus. There had been some uncertainty as to how FX would handle the delay of critically acclaimed Louie, which aired with Wilfred last season; would they slot in something new? Throw Anger Management into the hour? Move Wilfred to 11:00 following summer drama The Bridge? Now that the show is staying on Thursdays and Anger Management hasn’t shown the type of ratings power that would facilitate such a move, it’s only a matter of which comedy it will be paired with and how compatible the two will be.

Wilfred stars Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings), Jason Gann (The Wedge), Fiona Gubelmann (Blades of Glory), and Dorian Brown (Home Run). This season will find Fringe alum Lance Reddick guest starring as Ryan’s therapist.

In the string of teasers, there are no plot points for the upcoming season revealed; we don’t get to see anything about Wilfred’s role in Ryan’s life before the suicide attempt or any hints about whether Jenna would still be around. However, we do get to see Wilfred engage in some dog-like activity – only in his way. While playing a game, Ryan shows him a catalog full of things Wilfred said he’d hump; Ryan puts medication in string cheese, which Wilfred knows about yet still devours; the two encounter a police dog that Wilfred calls a narc; Ryan steps out onto his porch to get the paper and Wilfred destroys a pillow, for fear that Ryan would be gone forever.

Joining Wilfred stars Elijah Wood and Jason Gann this season is Fringe alum Lance Reddick, who, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is set to guest star as Ryan’s calm, no-nonsense therapist.

The third season of Wilfred premieres this June on FX. The network recently announced that it would be splitting in two beginning this fall, with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The League, and Legit among the shows that would move to comedy-focused FXX. The fate of Wilfred, should it be renewed for a fourth season, was left unmentioned.
